Karl Rove, who knows something about winning a presidential election, has suggested that Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York is a “fatally flawed’’ candidate.

No one, Rove asserts, has ever had such high unfavorable ratings. Yet, the analysts at the Gallup Poll say, while the negative ratings that Clinton draws in opinion polls are “high, and unusually so for a candidate this far ahead of the election,’’ a look at history suggests that her ratings “do not necessarily spell defeat.’’

“Clinton's current unfavorable ratings are in reality not much different from what other past candidates have had in the year they won the election,’’ Gallup's Frank Newport and colleagues report today. “Second, her image has been more negative than positive several other times during the past 15 years, but often has recovered and could do so again.

And, finally, “despite Clinton's high unfavorables, she remains competitive with the Republican candidates in Gallup's presidential test elections.’’

Rove has made two assertions about Clinton, first with Rush Limbaugh: “I think she's likely to be the nominee, and I think she's fatally flawed.’’

And indeed, no early front-runner in the history of modern polling has ever entered the primary election season with negatives as high as Clinton’s, Gallup reports.

Rove noted as much on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday:

“She enters the general election campaign with the highest negatives of any candidate in the history of the Gallup Poll. …She enters the presidential contest with higher negatives. The only person who comes close is -- she -- hers are at 49 -- the only other candidate to come close was Al Gore with 34, I believe’’
.
Gallup says: “It is impossible to determine what the level of unfavorable ratings were for other presidential candidates who were "entering" the election season, since there is no clear consensus as to when each campaign began.

“But in order to put Clinton's current image in historical perspective, we reviewed Gallup poll data from previous elections and searched for the highest unfavorable ratings given to major candidates in each. The results show that several other presidential candidates were at some points during their campaigns in essentially the same position as Clinton is today, with an unfavorable rating just below 50 percent.

This includes George W. Bush in 2004 and Bill Clinton in 1992.

Clinton's ratings today are 47 percent favorable and 48 percent ufavorable.

The highest unfavorable ratings of the major candidates from the previous four elections are:

Date Favorable Unfavorable

2004 election
George W. Bush Jan 29-Feb 1: 52 47
John Kerry Oct 14-16: 52 45

2000 (including post-election vote count controversy period)

George W. Bush Nov 13-15: 53 43
Al Gore Dec 2-4: 46 52

2000 (excluding post-election vote count controversy period)
George W. Bush Sep 15-17: 51 41

Al Gore Oct 24-26: 53 42

Aug 4-5: 52 42

1996 election

Bill Clinton Jan 12-15: 54 44
Bob Dole Oct 26-29 : 47 47

1992 election
Bill Clinton Apr 20-22: 42 49
George H. W. Bush Oct 7-9: 38 58

The most recent results come from a survey of 1,019 adults conducted Aug. 13-16.

Gallup reports that “a careful review of past data shows that there is no reason to assume Hillary Clinton will maintain these high unfavorable ratings as the election draws closer… A number of candidates have had relatively high unfavorable ratings at some point in the election campaign but most managed to improve them at least somewhat by Election Day.

Positioning her as "fatally flawed" or "unelectable" is Rove's 1st step strategy to destroy her. More will follow. Smart democrats will refute this everytime it comes up, and begin their own similar attacks on republicans. This ain't rocket science -- it's all strategy.

Never seen this before. A Republican trying to create reality despite evidence to the contrary.

Turd Blosson AKA Karl Rove, who cut and ran, is telling us Hillary Clinton is fatally flawed. Clinton has an enemy list a mile long but she also has lots of friends and support and money. If Republicans and conservatives don't like her...too bad. Bush's approval ratings are in the twenties and falling. He will be the very worst President this country has had. And for Rove, can you imagine the foul putrid stench coming out of his former west wing office. Wow, how repulsive. You can credit him for the Nov. 2006 election results and for pretty much ruining the Republican party. What a guy.

Karl Rove knows his people. Just think for a moment. Who was the most flawed presidential candidate in recent memory. You got it. Karl knows that despite his many and varied, and well documented flaws, our great and illustrious Bush became president of these here Yanited States. That's right! So what does that tell you about the fatally flawed Hillary/Bill. You got it. Look for continuity in the White House.

"Karl Rove, who knows something about STEALING a presidential election."

Let get it right. It's been 7 years and everyone know bush* was never elected.

KKKarl Rove may be out of Washington D.C. but don't be fooled: he is still working furiously for the Cheneybush regime. Anything and everything he does is part of some other "secure & undisclosed" plan he and Satancheney are working on. Remember that $8 billion in cash that went missing? Someone won't be missing any paychecks. Count on it.

Even Gallup had to issue a press release saying KKKarl was twisting their data. Of course, since he and Rush Limbaugh agree, though, it is now released to the bottom 26% as kant.(oh, right - Rush Limbaugh. Maybe that's another place to send part of the $8 billion? pills, anyone?)

Of course she IS fatally flawed. She is a nasty, two faced weasel. At least her husband was smooth, all she is is vile.

I lean left (only because the Republican party is worthless unless you are a millionare) but I will NOT vote for Hillary. Unless the Repug's choose Romney to be there canidate I would rather vote Republican than vote for Hillary.

If it comes down to Hillary vs. Mitt I am moving to Canada.

The fatal flaw for conservatives was having Mike Rove in the White House. Seriously, anyone really believe he helped strengthen their cause among mainstream Americans?
Republicans can thank him for erroding them to a minority party nationwide.

The actual Gallup poll (as opposed to the Swamp's "spin" headline of what Gallup said) tends to back up what Rove said.

And since the Swamp has once again ignored the latest Gallup Poll on the GOP race (released Aug. 20), I'll once again do what the Swamp won't do and provide the link:

http://www.galluppoll.com/content/?ci=28447

Bottom line--Giuliani's still in front, Romney gained some after his Iowa win.

Clarence Page had a good column on the subject of Rove's fascination with Hilliary Clinton. Page closed with "Negative campaigns work sometimes. But as Rove should know by now, sooner or later people want to know what you are for."

Rove is trying to change teh subject. Do you think he wants to talk about his legacy now? The last thing he can try to do to save it, in his own squinty eyes, is prevent the GOP from handing over the White House. The fall is not pretty, but then Karl was never close to pretty.

So, looking at the data for the last four pres. elections, I am left with three observations:
First, only one candidate whose negative ratings were higher than positives was elected president.
Second, that person ran against someone whose negative ratings were higher than his.
Third, according to that data, I suppose this means that if Hillary Clinton ran against George W. Bush she would win. But since he's not on the ballot in 2008, it would be helpful to know what the negative ratings for the top GOP contenders are, for the sake of comparison.

Who cares what this (jerk) has to say? Clean the mayo off of your tie Karl!

Rove only wishes she was fatally flawed.

Roman B, it is KARL Rove, not Mike Rove.

And if we want to look at folks who are kings of dirty campaigning, there are no greater examples than Paul Begala and Serpenthead himself, James Carville.

And, sorry, Loons, but Hillary's negatives are around 50 percent, very high for a candidate. She is flawed, whether fatally, we will see.

" Why should we trust the Gallup poll ...When George W.Bush was re-elected a second tern, his approval ratting was less than 50%.
Therefore, I'm standing with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Dems always think Rove is up to something. The guy was asked direct questions on Meet the Press about the Democratic candidates, and he gave his opinion that Hillary appears to be the frontrunner, but she is flawed given her high negative ratings. It is his opinion. You can take it or leave it.

The funny thing is that Dems can't just take his words on their face. Their "white whale" has spoken, and now they need to panic and find out what he really meant. Did Rove say that because he is afraid of Hillary? Or maybe he is afraid of Obama, and is using reverse psychology, hoping that an attack from him would actually garner support for Hillary to Obama's detriment? Rove is laughing somewhere at the bizarre fascination Democrats have with him, and how he can make them all jump by merely opening his mouth.

Retro Paul, it's time to face the fact that Bush IS the President, for as much a disaster that may be. It might have mattered for a bit in 2000 and 2004 to have contested the election, but you need to face the fact that the whole "he's not really the President" boat sailed a long time ago.

Rove has a genuine talent for political savvy, although he's not by any means omniscient (he did, after all, predict that Dems would lose in 2006). He might be correct in assessing Clinton's faults -- but remember also he's got a definite axe to grind on the whole issue, a decided interest in making sure that Clinton is demonized (as he demonized and tried to demonize all Bush's opposition in the past) and a partisan benefit in seeing his party succeed. Rove's not particularly inclined to act in a nonpartisan manner in this or anything else. And there's some rumor going around that he lies or muddies the facts from time to time if he thinks he needs to.

I'd take this all at face value. A brainy but far from impartial guy said something about Clinton. It either is or is not true.

"WHO LIFTING WHO NOW"

ROVE APPEARS TO BE TAKING ON BUSH ROLE AS A "CHEERLEADER."

ROVE CAN'T FIND HIS BLACKBERRY OR ANY EMAILS THROUGH THE RNC PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS COMPUTERS. CAN'T FIND ANY EMAILS PERTAINING TO THE CAGED AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTES.

NOW HE HAS TAKEN ON THE CHEERLEADING MUCKERACKING POLITICAL HACK MACHINE FOR WHATS LEFT OF THE THE GOP AND WHATEVER INTEGRITY AS MEN AND WOMEN THEY MAY HAVE LEFT.

I THINK ROVE CANNOT STOMACH THE FACT THAT A "FEMALE" WILL SIT IN THE HIGHEST CHAIR OF THEM ALL.
MADAME PELOSI MADE HIM SMACK HIS CLOSET BOYFRIEND TOM DELAY OVER AND OVER AND OVER. IT'S ALL YOU AND JACKS FAULT.

CONGRESS SHOULD FILE INHERENT CONTEMPT AND LOCK HIM UP IN THE BASEMENT UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTIONS OR UNTIL HE CAN FIND HIS RECORDS AND EMAILS VIA THE CONSTITUTIONAL LAWS OUTRIGHT BROKEN.

LONG LIVE NANCY PELOSI!

OK Johnny - tell us all the negative campaigning that Begala and Carville did.

Oh, and by the way - Rove did most of his while he was AN EMPLOYEE of the President. Carville NEVER had a WH position.

Once again, Johnny shoots off his mouth without any proof.

Amazing how Rove's propaganda is reported as truth isn't it! he's been doing this for 8 years now that i know of. And the mainstream corporate media reports this propaganda crap and "news" with no accountability. no wonder people are turning off the news". I know I have stopped.

KKKarl Rove attacking Democrats is a good thing this time around.

Turd Blossom Karl has turned out to be a disaster for the GOP, the Republican Party brand name is "crap" these days because of BushCo...i.e Rove.

If I'm Hillary, I'm happy as can be that the hated KKKarl is talking smack about me.

Ta ta ta da daaaah. The Tribune and Gallup charge to the defense of Hillary. Just because a lot of people dislike her doesn't mean they won't vote for her? Clinton doesn't need spin; the media do it for her. By the way, the Gallup poll also shows that the sun will rise in the west tomorrow.

John D,
You continue to disappoint me. I want to be a true believer but youre not helping me. You did not defend Karl, only threw stones at yesterday's news. Could it be that Karl really is a very dark bad guy, one that not even you can justify?

Clinton is "flawed", Kerry was a "flip flopper", Dean was "angry", Gore was an "exaggerator". These lies only work if they get repeated over and over and drilled into the public's mind by the media. All the attention given to the lie Rove told about Clinton just proves it - call the man a liar and move on, don't repeat what he said over and over.

Karl Rove is right Hil is fatally flawed. Her speeches sound like everyman's worst ex-wife even if he didn't have one.Ev eryone remembers her failed socialist health care proposal, her Whitewater problems with Madison Guuaranty a failed Savings and Loan represented by her and Rose Law Firm and how she couldn't find her billing records at Rose even though they were supoenaed by a Court of law until the statute of limitaations expired making the point moot. How about Travelgate when she meanly fired all the travel office aids at the White House to replace them with Clinton cronies and cousins. Or did you prefer her story of how she miraculously made $100,000 off of a $1,000 in cattle futures when she had help from a friend at Tysons but, no he didn't unethically help her. Then, there was Bill's pardons and her brother Hugh's being a lawyer for one of them and she knew nothing about it. It just goes on and on. Bill only one in 1992 by 43 percent of the vote and some 48 percent in the 2nd term because fortunately they were all 3 way races with the Green Party and Ralph Perot helping out.Bill was a minority president in terms of plurality. I feel good for the GOP in 08. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

3rd Party anyone? HOw about the American Veteran Party? Let's see if they can come up with a candidate.

Disullisioned, I have no problem with Karl Rove. He is a political operative. He does what he does. Republicans like him, Democrats hate him. Just like Democrats love James Carville and Paul Begala, and Republicans hate them.

And to Bobin, Carville and Begala both did work for Clinton and in the White House, Begala for a longer period of time than Carville. Another political hack, John Podesta, was even Clinton's chief of staff for awhile.

You want proof? Google it! I can't help those that don't even know RECENT U.S. history.

Jerry, have you seen your doctor lately to have those meds re-upped? You're making even less sense than usual today. Who is Ralph Perot?

I love this red herring: that because Clinton won (not one) a plurality as opposed to a majority, that that would diminish his success. Hello, Jerry White!? Are you aware that your hero President Bush DID NOT EVEN WIN A PLURALITY OF VOTES IN 2000, HE LOST? Yet you carry his water and lick his boots as if he was the second coming of Jeebus.

John D I must say you are at least pretty consistent with your political viewpoint -- the ends justify the means, whatever the means are. I just hope you don't live the rest of life that way, its got to be lonely.

So what is it about KARL Rove & his attack on Hillary? Why can't Karl just help promote a conservative agenda, or is he only going out to be part of the right winged attack machine because they have no great ideas to promote? Why do nothing except attack; the very thing Republicans acuse Democrats of doing nothing but?
And why only attack Hillary? Afraid of going after Obama?
Maybe Karl's got a thing for her.

These polls show time periods of a few days. Hillary's high negatives have staying power. She's been disliked by most of the country for years. Besides, all the polls in the world can't make her likable. Men find her odious.

whatnow?,
People aren't buying the GOP "swiftboat tactics" this time around, pal.
Looks like your side (GOP) is going to actually have to come up with a reason for us to vote for you this time.

Time to go back to the swiftboat drawing board, wingnuts !

RomanB, can you please provide for me three great ideas being promoted by the Democrats this election for the future of this country?

Disillusioned, you can think what you want. I have learned in the past year that whatever thinking does occur by the Loonyh Left is pretty shallow and weak, if even that good.

But I don't think you have a clue as to what ends and what means I like or want or will even accept or not accept.

"Ralph Perot" - ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!.....

Take Two and Call Me in the morning is not areal name. I was busy today I know his name is Ross it's a typo and you-- you are an elistist, leftist jerk.Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Jerry White,

No. THANK YOU!

Karl "Miss Piggy" Rove says that Senator Clinton has a fatal flaw -- that she's female.

This insults 50% of the populace.

Who are, by the way, noticing that.

"Fatally" is a strange word to use for a man who thought that sending boys off to avenge an assasination attempt gave his president the best opportunity to win re-election reasoning: we don't throw out sitting president's in a time of war.

"Boy genius" needs to stay away from words that remind us that his president has sent off tens of thousands of young men off to fight in a war of choice.

Karl Rove is correct. Hillary Clinton is flawed as a presidential candidate. Clinton is a one term senator, who is extremely polarizing. She is extremely leftwing, and while that is what the 20% of the far left want, her pretending to be a moderate is not going to fool the other 80%. The important facets the 60% who comprise conservative liberals, middle moderates, and liberal conservatives look for: is executive experience and how likeable the candidate is. Clinton has no executive experience, and most people know she can be quite nasty and vindictive.
The Dems are going to skip over the more qualified and likeable governor candidates they still have, and probably pick Clinton. By doing to so, they are going down the same path they have the last two elections - run a polarizing individual who the vast majority of people, regardless of political leanings, would not want to work or socialize with.

So Rove thinks that Rudy's "not flawed".

- Not going to EVEN ONE Iraq Study Group meeting because he preferred going out to make over one million dollars giving speeches IS FLAWED.

- Marrying your cousin IS FLAWED.

- Divorcing 2 wives, one so that you can marry your mistress, IS FLAWED.

- Saying that you want the media to "keep your family out of the campaign" after his OWN DAUGHTER says she'll support someone else IS A FLAW in Rudy's character.

Geez, just like shooting fish in a barrel.
