(Here's a little quiz on knowing the Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara.)
by Mark Silva
Jenna Bush, one of the first twins, apparently will become the first to wed, with the White House today announcing an engagement.
.
The president’s daughter became engaged Wednesday to Henry Hager, 29, who has worked around the White House in his own right and is the son of Virginia’s former lieutenant governor.
No wedding date has been set yet, according to the announcement by First Lady Laura Bush. Jenna Bush will turn 26 in November.
This relationship is very much all in the families:
The fiance’s father, former Virginia Lt. Gov. John Hager, has had a long career in Virginia politics. He stepped down as state director of the Office of Commonwealth Preparedness a few years back. And President Bush nominated Hager as assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services at the Department of Education.
Hager, the Republican Party chairman in Virginia, also helped Oliver North campaign for a Senate seat, was appointed to the federal education post in May 2004, confirmed by the Senate in November and served until Aug. 1 of this year.
And son Henry Hager has worked at the White House, helping outgoing political chief Karl Rove on the reelection team.
The younger Bush and Hager have been noted as a dating item for some time, as well, with a Richmond, Va., magazine speculating more than two years ago on a possible engagement.
The two have been dating for several years, and Hager is often seen at Jenna Bush's side at family Bush functions and formal events, such as a White House dinner in November 2005 in honor of Britain's Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
Hager will be returning to school this fall to complete his master's degree in business administration at the University of Virginia. He has an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University.
Jenna Bush, a graduate of the University of Texas, has a book coming out in the fall. "Ana's Story," based on her time working for UNICEF in Central America, tells of a 17-year-old single mother who is HIV positive.

It's refreshing to read about 2 young Republicans who were able to overcome the odds and pick themselves up by the bootstraps and find successful careers.

Right on Jethro - other young folks should look to these two as a model of how to live life.
I'm sure it wasn't easy to get ahead for either of them, but together they prove that the American dream is indeed possible.

Posted by: Rob S | August 16, 2007 5:05 PM
I am bothered by the people who have turned this annoucement into some sort of POLITICAL AGENDA. Let us all remember this is not a drafted service we have here. Men and women are inlisting in our armed services THEY ARE NOT BEING FORCED. They are CHOOSING to serve. Whatever their reasons may be. Bush "hatter" (the word is hater) May I ask what you do? You might want to review your "rants" by checking your grammer and spelling before you post. The absolute IGNORANCE and ARROGANCE in this country astound me! Let's sit back and think a little more. There are far more relivant issues in the world.
Posted by: Srh | August 16, 2007 5:05 PM
Not surprised that the sickest of the sick, the most demented of the demented and basically the worst mankind has to offer, the Loony Left, would be spewing more of their inane spittle on this item. And, of course, it's no surprise that Mark Silva or Frank James would protect thier little deranged minions too.
Posted by: John D | August 16, 2007 5:10 PM
So the fiance is a "sissyhawk" because he isn't in uniform? You liberals give me a case of the galloping trots. Your putdown attempt would have validity if there was a draft and the kid had strings pulled to avoid service. But my ignorant nimrods we have a VOLUNTEER military, however flawed it may be. You don't have to go if you don't want to. And for the record - I served eleven years as an U.S. Army infantry officer 1972 - 1983.
Posted by: Wolfgang | August 16, 2007 5:13 PM
Usually I agree with you on every matter John D, but I just can't bring myself to do it with your posting...You misspelled a word.
Posted by: Bruce | August 16, 2007 5:31 PM
Hey "Srh" think about this - many of the people who are indeed "choosing to serve" do so because there is little alternative to a succcessful live in some places in the country. I know of many enlisted men who have only a high school education or merely received a GED before going into the service.
And I think that's fine - it's good to offer some kind of alternative to working at McDonalds or in a factory to people with only a high school education - but it comes with the price of being killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, on a training mission, etc... etc... It's extremely brave of these people to put their lives on the line to support their families and defend our country.
It's very unlikely Jenna or her fiance would ever have to think about serving in the armed forces - they come from extremely wealthy families and lead a very comfortable life, which is also fine. They don't have to make the sacrifice of military work to be considered successful or prosperous...they're already considered so just because of the family they were born into.
Posted by: EK | August 16, 2007 5:31 PM
Uh, Srh, grammar is spelled with two a's, not an a and and e, so before you start lambasting anyone else about checking their spelling, try checking your own. As far as the happy couple, Congratulations. Enough said.

This is a comment on a couple's personal life. We should hold comments for the divorce in what, 8 years? Enough time to have 2 kids?
Nevertheless, so he didn't serve in the armed forces. Neither did my uncle and he was an EXTREMELY popular mayor of our small town for quite some time.
Political involvement does not mean someone has to serve in the armed forces. We chose to have a volunteer army unlike other countries.

Liberals--you people (and I use that term loosely) are so filled with hate and negativity you can't even spare one of W's daughters from your vitriol and spite. You have to personally attack W and his family seemingly because there is just too much rage and anger for just one person.
I personally never thought I would feel this way but I actually feel badly for you because you can't celebrate anything that isn't somehow about you.
Every one of you who feels the need to make ad hominem attacks on someone who is merely the daughter of another whom you hate (for whatever reason) needs serious psychiatric treatment.
You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

To all of you who have no idea what she does for a living, learn to read (because clearly you didn't read the above story, or any other article on this, before you posted your unenlightened comments)--and some of you also need to learn to write and spell. Hey, since Jenna's degree is in English, perhaps she could help you!
If you want to be outraged by something, be outraged that American fourth graders score twelfth in the world in math skills, after Latvia and Hungary. Our eighth graders are fifteenth, below Malaysia and Slovakia. And by the time they’re fifteen years old, our students have slipped off the map--to twenty-fourth place internationally (according to DR. RUDY CREW’S new book ONLY CONNECT: THE WAY TO SAVE OUR SCHOOLS). Do something to better yourself and your community and stop wasting your time posting ignorant and uninformed comments.

If it has nothing to do with politics, who the hell would care about Jenna Bush to begin with? She's a no one. She has done nothing, which is a lot better than her father. But really, tons of people get engaged everyday, so who cares when two quite insignificant people get engaged and we have that plastered all over the news like it's an important event? This type of news piece deserves these types of comments. When Jenna Bush goes and does something worthy, then come and defend her. As far as I know, all she's done is graduate from college and do nothing after that. It's a political wedding and deserves only political comments. Get over it and stop pretending like these people would care about you or your well-being. They're rich, and that's all they care about!

The Trib pretty much lets any baseless politically-motivated attack into this forum. Especially if it's pointed at a republican. From reading this forum for some time it's obvious that hate-speech against that particular group is a-okay. The "screening" has always been nonexistent.
If it wasn't, just think, John E. would then have nothing to say. It's also obvious from some of the laughable defenses that these people come up with that the leftists don't grasp that Jenna's engagement announcement has next to nothing to do with the war. The way they confuse censorship with common decency is apparent, particularly since no one has been censored on this board.
It's not like we're living in Venezuela where Dictator Hugo Chavez has shut down opposition television and radio outlets.
Incidentally, I'd like to see what Chavez would've done to someone like convicted traitor Jose Padilla.
Anyway have your name-calling fun on this irrelevant dead-tree journalism website. All it does is show how vindicative you all are. I thought it was mean-spirited when "Saturday Night Live" comedians mocked Chelsea Clinton for simply being the daughter of the President and that had nothing to do with her father's politics. It's obvious that some people here are giving Jenna the same treatment. Their parents must be so proud.
Posted by: Hillaryis44 | August 17, 2007 4:44 PM
Bush still has his daughter to walk down the aisle. What about all those young men that are dying in the war they will never be able to walk their daughter down the aisle. I don't care if she's engaged! There are real issues that everyone should be focusing on not on her stupid engagement!
