Holding back tears, Karl Rove explained his departure from the Bush administration today on the South Lawn of the White House before leaving with Bush aboard Marine One for the start of a trip for vacations in Texas, where the two first met three decades ago.
Rove said he had first discussed leaving last summer, but never found the right time.
"Now, it seems the right time,'' said Rove, standing alongside Bush at a podium on the South Lawn, with the presidential helicopter awaiting their departure for Andrews Air Force Base and a flight to Texas.
"Karl Rove is moving on down the road,'' said Bush, explaining that he had been "talking to Karl for a while about his desire to spend more time with (wife) Darby and (son) Andrew.
"This is a family that's made enormous sacrifices not only for our beloved state of Texas but for a country we both love,'' said Bush, who has known Rove since Bush's own first, failing bid for Congress in 1978 and who has credited Rove as the architect of two successful White House campaigns. "We've been friends for a long time and we're still going to be friends. I would call Karl Rove a dear friend. We've known each other as youngsters interested in serving our state.
"And so I thank my friend,'' said Bush, with a nod to his own diminishing time in office. "I'll be on the road behind you here in a little bit. ''
"Mr. President, I’m grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve our nation,'' said Rove, with an emotional, prepared short speech about having "been a witness to history..
"It has been the joy and honor of a lifetime,'' said Rove, praising Bush as "a man… of courage'' who had put the nation on "a war footing'' in the face of terrorism and who had taken an "economy weakened'' by recession and terrorism and turned it around.
"I have seen a reformer,'' said Rove, who is partly responsible for helping craft that very label of Bush during his first campaign for president in 2000 -- when Republican rival John McCain was posing a serious challenge for the Republican nomination. After a brief retreat to Texas after Bush's loss to McCain in the New Hampshire primary that year, Bush emerged for the next round in South Carolina campaigning as "a reformer with results.''
"Mr. President, the world has turned many times since our journey began,'' Rove said, calling it "an exhilirating and an eventful time... Through it all you have remained the same man… inspiring.''
"I've seen a man of far-sighted courage put America on a war footing and protect us against a brutal enemy in a dangerous conflict that will shape this new century,'' Rove said. "I've seen a leader respond to an economy weakened by recession, corporate scandal and terrorist attacks by taking decisive action to strengthen the economy and create jobs.
"I've seen a reformer who challenged his administration, the Congress and the country to make bold changes to important institutions in great need of repair.''
Rove said their friendship of 34 years will continue. and he will "deeply miss'' his work at the White House. And with that, the president and Rove turned and left without answering questions.
Bush is headed for a week of rest at his Texas ranch. Dove has said he plans to go dove hunting and take his wife, Darby, to the beach. It's time, he said, to tend to his family.

Comments
"Rove said the first thing he plans to do after leaving the White House is "go dove hunting in West Texas with family and friends, then drive my wife and the dogs to the beach."

I wonder if he'll do as much damage to his family as he's done to this country.

My, you Lefty Loons really need to get a life.
While I am not a hunter and would never shoot at an animal for hunting purposes, let's not make something out of it that it isn't.
And damage to the country? Please. If you want real damage done to the country, Clinton selling missile and defense technologies to China in exchange for campaign donations, is REAL DAMAGE to this country.

...actually, with the poor aim the Bush Administration has had, the doves are pretty safe...its the rest of us who need to keep our heads down...

This is a disgraceful statement during a time of war. Those that have sent their children, spouses, mothers and fathers to die in war have made enormous sacrifices. What did what Rove do, work a lot of hours and make a ton of cash? I know plenty of people who work 60-70 hours a week and have a lot less to show for it financially. Its called making a living. Is he going back to his family missing a limb? With emotionally crippling nightmares? Some vets come back and find their job gone. Karl I am sure will work as a "consultant" earning lucrative fees. Give me break. He is a mean, ugly person. If I was his son, I'd want him as far away as possible.

Slimeball KKKarl Rove is going to crawl off to one of the Republicans Presidential candidates(Thompson, Giuliani) campaign and do more of his "Swiftboat" crap in the general election hoping that he can fool the American people into voting for a Republican for President again.

Enormous sacrifices is correct! That's exactly what our soldiers have done and are continuing to do as we speak, because of this man. Maybe now he will have more time to really think about the blood on his hands. Enjoy,
your retirement Mr. Rove, and I hope you don't sleep well.

Why doesn't he take his guns and go to Iraq or Afghanistan? The US and the world would benefit if more terrorists were killed, not doves.

With Rove leaving, who's the hate-filled left going to hate now?
Don't worry, the left will continue to display the classic symptoms of Bush Derangement Syndrome. Hate is what fills their rather sad lives. They'll just transfer their bile to another Republican. The only question is: who?

Bruce, Who will the Republicans transfer their hate and loathing to if Hillary Clinton doesn't get the Democratic nomination?
The depth of the Republican hate has been truly impressive, motivating them completely for 7 years after Bill left office. I can't imagine the republican party without the attacks on all things Clinton that have been their mainstay for the past 15 years.
Will the Obama hate take over?

Best wishes to Karl Rove and to President Bush. Both are great Americans that have to listen leftist slimeballs impugn them without end.
Pat Leahy the nutty Senator from Vermont says that Rove has much to answer for to his committee. There is something wrong with the water in Vermont. It has produced Jumpin Jim Jeffords, socialist Bernie Sanders, Howard Dean and ol Pat Leahy--a/k/a Senator Depends for leaking classified information in the 80's.
The Dem Senate and House have used 600 oversight hearings to attack President Bush instead of doing their job in the legislative process. They face real vetoes from W--Go W ! May God Bless you Mr. President and Karl. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

"spend more time with his wife and son"? His son's away at college. LOL.
Why don't they just call it what it is. The subpoenas are flying, the ship is sinking, and off jumps one of the biggest rats of them all.
Posted by: david k | August 13, 2007 2:22 PM
So Karl wants to spend more time with his family? Maybe folks ought to ask whether the family wants to spend time with him. Josh Marshall at Talkinpointsmemo.com correctly notes:
Of course, if there's more to this resignation, it's not necessarily that easy to narrow down the list of possibilities since Rove is connected to pretty much every instance of high-level wrongdoing. And then there's the extra added wrinkle that if anything the White House's ability to keep Rove off the witness stand is decreased, if only marginally, by his leaving the White House. With the recent news of cutbacks on funding of human intelligence in the intel budget, there's the possibility that there were no more CIA agents whose cover could be blown and he decided to move on to greener pastures.
Jack Abramhoff has been telling friends and family in the last few months that Karl Rove was going down because he is implicated in the bribery investigations.
Abramhoff has been talking freely and fully to the FBI about Rove and what he knew and when he knew it. Whether that translates into an indictment remains to be seen.
Then there is the Rove role in outing Valerie Plame. He was not indicted but that was only because he finally found a way to tell something approximating the truth after several appearances before the grand jury. Joe and Val released this statement today:
Karl Rove's resignation signals the final chapter in the Bush administration's betrayal of the identity of a covert CIA officer. When this breach of national security occurred, the President promised the American people that anybody in his administration responsible for the leak would be removed. Rove, identified by the prosecutors as one of the leakers, not only was not summarily dismissed, but has been allowed to leave on his own terms, to praise from the President. This sordid tale of compromising national security to cover-up and distract from the false rationale for the invasion of Iraq will forever remain in history a black mark on the Bush presidency.
Good bye and good riddance Karl. You've helped make America a worse place to live and raise a family. Here's hoping you get the karma you so richly deserve.

A reformer? Really?
My guess is that Rove is leaving because he's found a new subject for his man crush. (Yes, I'm saying that I believe Rove has a gay crush on Bush.)

Actually, Chris, I think the gay love affair is more by those on the Left. You folks have such an unnatural infatuation with the man, I think it's one of those things were hatred becomes a sick sort of demented love, which is about the only type of love you weirdos can conduct. I'll bet most of you have posters of Jeff Dahmer, John Gacy and Charles Manson on your bedroom walls, right?

Is it just me or are the right-wingers beginning to sound like a broken record. Even with all of the evidence against Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, (the list goes on and on) they still have nothing of substance to say. They simply "name-call". Are they truly that blind??? This administration has been one long national nightmare that will require years to overcome and repair the damage they have done. The right calling the left hateful is the pot calling the kettle black. This country needs an enema.
Posted by: Mark | August 13, 2007 2:57 PM
There no longer is any doubt that those on the Left have a severe reading deficiency. We get posters like Mark here, who gets all up arms over the "name-calling" done by those on the Right, but yet practically every post by the those on the Left is one big name-calling attack. Those are OK, I guess.
No wonder some of the most uneducated folks in the history of mankind come from the Left: selective reading abilities do not make an intelligent person.
The inability to read and comprehend does explain a lot of the Loony Left's problems.

I once remember my cousin who worked high up in the FBI once say that once we start investigating a person of intrest in a case we can't really stop the investigation, because it is at the taxpayers expense and the taxpayers expect results. Carl Rove should be looking over his back and as I'm quite sure, don't expect sanctuary now that you are officially leaving the safety of 1600 pennsylvania ave in Washington,D.C. Carl, your a marked man, you can run, but you can't hide, the long arm of the law, will grab you. I expect all the ugly truth to come out at trial and that a somber, sober and appropriate sentence will be handed down in time for your lil' old buddy to give you a presidential pardon. But you will always be known as the man who needlessly sent women and men to become casualties of war, "A NEEDLESS WAR"

You want to talk about gay fascination and name calling? I'll mix it for you right here. Is the GOP not the party of Mark "IM are U?" Foley, special White House adviser Ted "Male Massage and Meth" Haggard, and the recent and spectacular Rob "Restroom" Allen (btw, do stocky black men scare all GOPers, Johnny Boy?)? Give it a rest. Add something relevant or go back to watching Fox News in your Mommy's basement.

Spot the lies in these quotes!
Umm, how's that war footing go, Karl? How about those jobs? How about those reforms?

Little Johnny D... the difference is that the Democrats don't lecture America on the amorality of homosexuality in public and duck sick in private.
It's the hypocracy, not the gayness, dumba$$. (although, to a bigot like you, I'm sure it's teh gayness, not the hypocracy that disgusts you)
I could care less what these guys do with their private sex lives, unless there's children involved or they think it's their place to lecture America from their political position on the very "amoral" behavior they are partaking in themselves.
