The Senate Republican leadership has requested that Sen. Larry Craig step down, temporarily they say, as the senior Republican on several Senate committees.
This comes a day after they requested an ethics investigation of their fellow Republican senator after the revelation he pled guilty of disorderly conduct in Minneapolis after being arrested in a restroom-sex sting by a police officer at the Minneapolis airport.
Here's the statement of the Senate Republican leadership:
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Statement By Republican Leadership On Senator Larry Craig’s Committee Assignments
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is a statement by Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican Whip Trent Lott, Conference Chairman Jon Kyl, Policy Committee Chair Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Senatorial Committee Chair John Ensign on Senator Larry Craig’s Committee Assignments.
“Senator Larry Craig has agreed to comply with Leadership’s request that he temporarily step down as the top Republican on the Veteran Affairs Committee, Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, and Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests. This is not a decision we take lightly but we believe this is in the best interest of the Senate until this situation is resolved by the Ethics Committee.”

The actions taken by the Republican leadership make sense, but don't go far enough. I recommend level 4 containment for the GOP side of the senate chamber. By now, it should be pretty clear to Republicans that this gay stuff isn't a choice...it's a contagious disease. And while some Democratic senators have built up an immunity by attending gay pride parades, meeting with Barney Frank, or watching La Cage Aux Folles on cable, "family values" Republicans are wide open to infection from the slightest exposure. If they don't take proper precautions now, the Log Cabin Republicans will take over the party!

The latest Republican politician to be caught hitting up dudes in the public restrooms, the gay danger lurking within our nation’s toilet stalls — specifically in the airport restrooms, which of course is where Republican Senator Craig was arrested for soliciting gay sex. Any Republican calling for Craig's resignation but not David Vitter's is a hypocrite. Ya think the difference is because Idaho has a Republican governor and Louisiana has a Democratic governor? So the Repubs saying Craig should step down but not Vitter can appear to be 'moral' with no political risk. Typical.

Craig certainly should resign, just as
Ted Kennedy did after leaving a young girl to drown in his car; as Barney Frank did after his "housemate" was discovered in
some funky activities; as Pat Leahy did after leaking confidential information on a TV program; as Senator Byrd did after his
KKK connections were revealed; as Bill Clinton did after his boinking of a teenager in the Oral Office...and so on and so forth. That said, Craig really should resign...and it's not too late for Ted Kennedy.

Loons, was David Vitter charged with a crime and plead guilty to a crime?
Halsted you make great points. We can add Gary Condit to not resigning even though the intern he was boinking ended up murdered; Barney Frank and his escort service; Gerry Studds actually having sex with underage male pages; Harry Reid and his shady land deals; Bob Toricelli of New Jersey; Frank Lautenberg of same state; Bob Menendez of same state; Jon Corzine of same state. Sheesh, this could end up being longer than a flight to Mars.

Posted by: Kenny | August 29, 2007 6:41 PM
You are mistaken in suggesting that Craig admitted his guilt. He plead guilty to the lesser offense of disorderly conduct - which I believe involved no admission of sexual misconduct or attempted sexual misconduct. Thus, Craig’s plea did not resolve the discrepancies between the factual allegations in the police report and his public denials. Craig has publicly denied any wrongdoing, and by further claiming he made a mistake in pleading guilty to even the lesser offense. He has even said he is now going to get an attorney to try to undo that mistake. I hardly call that admitting guilt. Far from it.
I can’t honestly tell you where the truth is in the case against Senator Craig. It is conceivable that he is actually not guilty of any attempted sexual misconduct. His guilty plead didn’t admit any such thing, the undercover officer’s version was never tested in court by confrontation and cross-examination, Craig never testified under oath to his version of the events, and no trier of fact resolved the factual conflict or rendered a verdict. Thus the necessary truth-testing process never occurred. Craig might actually be not guilty of cruising the bathroom for a score. We may yet see these facts resolved in some forum one way or another.
On the other hand, Vitter admitted everything he was good for. He really did come clean. No one has suggested that he didn't admit to all wrongdoing. Vitter's willingness to admit his wrongdoing is certainly some indication that he has a few honest brain cells left. In contrast, if Craig really is guilty, the same could never be said for him. That might be the difference upon which GOP Senators are basing their decision to strip Craig of important committee assignments. If he is not guilty, however, their actions would be rather unfair.

Contrary to John W's parsing, the reason the Repugs are all after Craig to resign and not Vitter is very simple: Vitter's replacement would be nominated by a Democratic governor whereas Craig could be replaced by a Republican. It's that simple.
Additionally, last time I checked prostitution is a crime and that includes the patrons of prostitutes. Any HONEST prosecutor would be seeking an indictment against him right now. Unfortunately, the Justice Dept. is completely corrupted by this misadministration. Vitter is just as bad as Craig.

"was David Vitter charged with a crime and plead guilty to a crime?"
-- Having sex with a New Orleans prostitute for months is not a crime. Having sex with a Washington DC prostitute is not a crime. He's a hypocrite who called for President Clinton to resign for getting BJs from Monica, yet Vitter REFUSED TO RESIGN after being exposed as an adulterer. BTW, doesn't that violate some Commandment? #6 I think. Aren't Republics always saying how "God's laws" supersede Man's laws?
"We can add Gary Condit to not resigning even though the intern he was boinking ended up murdered"
-- And if you have ANY PROOF that he was involved in it, I'm sure the Justice Dept. would love to see it.
"Barney Frank and his escort service"
-- Barney Frank had NO INVOLVEMENT with it; it was run by his live-in companion (who, BTW, was arrested, tried, convicted and jailed for it).
"Gerry Studds actually having sex with underage male pages"
-- Who were of legal age of consent at the time; however, plenty of people then and now called for him to resign. He refused. Nor were the Republicans able to field a candidate that could beat him in the elections following his being censured in Congress.
"Harry Reid and his shady land deals"
-- If you demand that Reid resign over land deals, to avoid being a hypocrite you should call for Hastert's resignation too. Funny, I haven't read you doing so. You still have time to make amends on this.
"Bob Toricelli of New Jersey"
-- What has he been found guilty of in a court of law?
"Frank Lautenberg of same state"
-- Again, what has he been found guilty of in a court of law?
"Bob Menendez of same state"
-- Again, what has he been found guilty of in a court of law?
"Jon Corzine of same state."
