A quick guided tour to some of the morning's most important or interesting (or both) Washington-related stories.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales surprised the nation's capital by announcing the end of his controversial tenure as Justice Department head following disputes with Congress over his role in the war on terror and the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, with President Bush blaming lawmakers and naming Paul Clement, the current solicitor general, to replace Gonzales on an acting basis.

Democrats said congressional investigations into the Bush Administration's firing of nine attorney generals and its warrantless surveillance would continue despite Gonzales's departure.

Federal agencies are investigating the possibility of fraud and kickbacks in the supply of weapons and materiel to both American and Iraq military and security forces , already producing indictments of several Americans.

The U.S. military's demand for small-caliber ammunition because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has led to delays in getting ammunition for local police departments which have adjusted by cutting back on weapons training.

The U.S. Air Force will start using this fall in Afghanistan a pilotless aircraft with the bombing capacity of an F-16.

The Afghan opium trade increased by 34 percent in 2006 with the nation producing 93 percent of the worlds heroin and other opium products, placing it at a level of production that is extraordinary in world history, according to a United Nations report.

The District of Columbia led the nation in the percentage of its children classified as obese at 22.8 percent with Mississippi becoming the first state to top 30 percent of its overall population as obese, according to a report by the Trust for America's Health.

One of the largest sources of campaign contributions to Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential and senate campaigns, $45,000, is linked to an improbable address, a modest northern California bungalow, leading a Federal Election Commission official to say it warrants an investigation.

Reports about declining home sales could get even worse as the ripples from the subprime mortgage market widen to affect sales going forward.

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) pled guilty to disorderly conduct after being arrested in June at a Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport by a police officer investigating reports of lewd conduct in public restrooms.

As is often the case, the Swamp recycles a story from the left-partisan Washington Post which asserts that military demands on ammunition are denying local police of needed ammunition. That is the WaPo headline, which is misleading at best. In reality, the ammo shortage comes from the increased demand by local police, not the military. To quote the text of the article, "What we're seeing is orders for law enforcement ammunition that have increased 40 percent in just the last year," said Brian Grace, a spokesman for Alliant Techsystems, a leading supplier for police departments across the country."

Guess that reality wasn't anti-Bush enough for the WaPo headline writers.

So called liberal media. If Sen. Obama had been caught in the men's room trolling for gay sex the story wouldn't be buried in the Swamp Gas section. This story needs more exposure.

Just two words about the Idaho senator case: Barney Frank.

The GOP...the party of family values....and gay sex in men's rooms.

Funny. You'd think that the news of ANOTHER Repukeliscum pervert, the latest in the long line of GOPper PERVerts, would make the list of "BIG STORIES."

Why is it that ALL the Repukeliscum are perverts?

Come on, Chicago Tribune. Quit "stalling" on the Larry Craig case. Senator Craig, like so many in the Repukeliscum Party, is a pervert.

Mark Foley is a Repukeliscum. He's a pervert.

David Vitter is a Repukeliscum. He's a pervert.

Larry Craig is a Repukeliscum. He's a pervert.

Are all Repukeliscum perverts? Inquiring minds WANT TO KNOW.

Why is it that as people join the Repukeliscum Party, their moral fiber drops to -50.

What is the causal factor in the EPIDEMIC of REPUKELISCUM perverts?

So desiring gay sex makes one a pervert? That doesn't seem like a very liberal position, POed.

Hey, I forgot one group in my list of perverts.

The Repukeliscum preacher perverts.

Ted Haggert is a preacher and a pervert and a Repukeliscum.

Over the years, there have been many Repukeliscum preacher perverts.

Why are conservatives so drawn to perversion and self-degradation? Why are "family values" wacks so perverse?

Sitting in a bathroom feeling up cops in the next stall? Whoa - VERY PERVERSE!!

Cheating on your wife to have sex with a cop in Minneapolis? PERVERT TO THE MAX, especially the Minneapolis part.

If he was just having fun as an unattached uncommitted male, hey - I don't care who he has fun with, provided it isn't a Senate page like that other Repukeliscum pervert, Mark Foley.

Uncommitted adults can do whatever they want. But Larry is married - what's a married guy doing feeling up cops in a Minneapolis airport? BEING A REPUKELISCUM PERVERT, THAT'S WHAT HE'S DOING.

I will remind the Repukeliscum posters that the Repukeliscum Party will be having its convention in Minneapolis. Did Larry Craig choose the location? Is this a Pervert Party in the Great White North?

So desiring gay sex makes one a pervert? That doesn't seem like a very liberal position, POed.

I'd say if you are married to a woman and have children then yes, you are a pervert if you want to have gay sex in public bathrooms.

Why are you Repukeliscum defending this pervert? I guess it's another example of IOKIYAR: It's OK If You're A Repukeliscum.

Another story you can read about everywhere except the Swamp--Another Hillary Clinton fundraising scandal. See the Wall St. Journal article at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118826947048110677.html?mod=hpp_us_whats_news
for the sordid details.

When the Clintons aren't sucking scum from the top of the pond [or getting sucked under the Oval Office desk], they are bottom-feeding the likes of the Hsus. I'm waiting for the MSM deluge of "racism" and "Murdoch hit-job' to surface as it always does from the Soros-cide end of the blog spectrum.

Fair enough, Marko. I'm not defending what Craig did. I'm just curious how a sex act can be perversion when committed by one guy, and yet not be perversion when committed by another. I just want to know where others place the line of demarcation. That's all I'm asking.

Bruce and daveinboca,
Where is/was your outrage when President Bush appointed Ken Lay to have a prominent role in handpicking members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission? After the members were appointed with Mr. Lay's personal review and approval, Enron went on to bilk the electric ratepayers of CA and other states without regulators trying to protect citizens. Of course after Enron collapsed and Ken Lay was exposed as criminal President Bush claimed he didn't know him personally and I'm guessing that you fellas believed him. Am I correct? If you are going to attack the Clinton's, please don't ignore President Bush and his many shady and in many cases criminal dealings

Po'ed Lib (seems like a given)

What do you think of Dem's who are or were caught in "perverted" episodes?

Not care?

You got any examples in the last 10 years? Stubbs and Frank were 20+ years ago, Monicagate 20+, so whatcha got?

How serious is the administration about cracking down on fraud in Iraq? Not at all serious.

They're much more focused on cracking down on the whistleblowers who uncover and report such fraud.

That should have read "Monicagate 10+ years ago"

They pride themselves on the family and family values and good morals and ethical straightness. And then we have this hypocritical sex pervert. Larry Craig (R) Idaho.

Didn't think so JD. Nice red herring.

"Buh buh buh the other party did it so its ok!!!"

Well, actually they didn't, at least in recent memory. Nice try.
