Here are a few Washington events of note for Tuesday, August 28, 2007 as collected by the Associated Press.

President Bush is speaking at the 89th Annual American Legion Convention in Reno, Nev.

The College Board is releasing the 2007 College-Bound Seniors Report. 9:30 a.m.


8 a.m. BREAST CANCER — The Susan Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney hold a discussion on making treatment of cancer a national priority.

10 a.m. CENSUS REPORTS — The Census Bureau holds a news conference to release two reports: Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2006, containing findings from the Current Population Survey; and Income, Earnings, and Poverty Data from the 2006 American Community Survey.
Location: Auditorium, Suitland Federal Center, Census Bureau, 4600 Silver Hill Rd., Suitland.

2 p.m. BLOOMBERG — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, others, speak at the Brookings Center on Children and Families briefing on the Census Poverty Report.

12 p.m. GUN PROTEST — Rainbow PUSH holds a National Day of Protests Against Gun Violence, in support of a reinstatement of the National Assault Weapons Ban.
Location: Realco Guns, Inc., 6108 Marlboro Pike, District Heights, Md.

12 p.m. MISSILE DEFENSE — American Association for the Advancement of Science holds a luncheon on the proposed U.S. missile defense in Europe.
Location: Room 2212, Rayburn.

1 p.m. VETERAN-PROTEST — Iraq War veteran Evan Knappenbergber holds a news conference as he continues a vigil on a six-foot scaffold to protest the Iraq War.
Location: 15th St. and Constitution Ave. NW.

2 p.m. LABOR DAY — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Labor Day press briefing, with vice presidents Martin Regalia aqnd Randel Johnson discussing the economy and the chamber’s priorities.
Location: 1615 H St. NW.

3 p.m. - 4 p.m. LOW-PERFORMIMG SCHOOLS — The Center for American Progress hosts a presentation, “Turning Around Low-Performing Schools: Local Strategies in Action." Panelists: Dr. Jack D. Dale, Superintendent, Fairfax County Public Schools; Michelle Rhee, Chancellor, District of Columbia Public Schools; and Dr. Jerry D. Weast, Superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools. The panel will be moderated by Elena Rocha, Senior Education Analyst, Center for American Progress.

4 p.m. NASA-MOON ROCKET — NASA will host a news conference to announce the selection of a contractor for the upper stage element of the Ares I rocket that will help launch future human missions to the moon. The Ares I will carry to low Earth orbit the Orion crew exploration vehicle, which will succeed the space shuttle as NASA’s primary vehicle for human space exploration.

7:30 p.m. IRAQ WAR — Candlelight vigil, as part of national Take A Stand Day, to honor fallen soldiers and urge Congress to end the war in Iraq.

Hopefully the Tribune's coverage of President Bush's speech before the Legion is more balanced and complete than
Michael Tackett's article last week on Bush's VFW address which spent 80 percent of the space refuting what Bush said and omitted the rousing reception he received. The Democrats have plenty of spinners without the help of the Tribune.


It'll be interesting to see how the Deserter in Chief modifies his "Iraq isn't like Vietnam before it became like Vietnam" speech.

There can be no peace in in the Iraq Civil War without a political reconcilliation and it's not even on the horizon.

It's our troops and their families who are sacrificing their lives while Deluded Dubya fiddles on.
