When the first words from Democratic ranks are positive, the White House has cause for encouragement in its announcement of a new attorney general.
The president's announcement comes at 10:30 am EDT in the Rose Garden.
And the first word on Michael Mukasey, the forrmer federal judge from New York whom President Bush stands ready to nominate as the replacement for Alberto Gonzales, is a rare one indeed in this season of capital conflict.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) issued this statement late last night:
"While he is certainly conservative, Judge Mukasey seems to be the kind of nominee who would put rule of law first and show independence from the White House, our most important criteria.
"For sure we'd want to ascertain his approach on such important and sensitive issues as wiretapping and the appointment of US attorneys, but he's a lot better than some of the other names mentioned and he has the potential to become a consensus nominee. "
Consensus -- there's a word that's been missing from the Washington vocabulary for some time.

Let the "Borking" begin. The libs won't be happy unless President Bush nominated Janet "Burn 'em Alive" Reno.

to Terry: Did you even read the article? Your comments seem to be either very partisan, or just uneducated, considering the tone of the article.

Since Janet Reno was probably the BEST AG we've had in decades, that would be a good choice. Ya think Georgie and Dickie would go for that?

News flash Terry, the Democrats like him. Hard line Republicans are the ones who have a problem with him.

Albert and LP - I'll believe when I see it.

You seem angry Terry. Are you frustrated about the nomination Terry??
I see you have alluded to Robert Bork, huh. Ronald Reagan's AG nominee you wanted to place video camera's in restrooms.

Re: Michael Mukasey for AG-
I am cautiously and blindly hopeful for this nominee after getting past the idea that it was another Bush nomination for AG. I hope this is not an over simplification- apparently his history does show that he believes that even someone who is designated an enemy combatant is entitled to meet with a lawyer. And, I don't mind that, in the early 1990s, he sentenced two men to life terms for their convictions in plots to destroy high-profile Manhatten real estate. I'll have to wait for the confirmation hearing to know more.

I assume, then, when the dems take over the white house Schumer would vote against any nominee who is not independent!

Doug R - Borking is a term for "character asssisnation".
I don't trust Schuber, Little Dick Durbin, Drown 'em Teddy, Leaky Leahy and the rest of the cabal as far as I can throw them.

Janet Reno was a terrible AG. The Clinton administration regretted that one.
Q: Why doesn't Janet Reno drink milk?
A: It turns to butter before it reaches her mouth.
Just a little tasteless humor for all you in The Swamp
