Just when you thought presidential campaigns were all about crass politics, the folks at Obama for America bring a friendly new twist to the idea of getting involved. The Democratic presidential candidate's new "Match" program works less like the average fundraising drive and more like, well, eHarmony.
Here's how it works: First, a donor declares a level of commitment to Obama, by choosing a dollar amount for contribution. Then pops up the name and town of the fellow Obama supporter who has agreed to match that donation.
And after the two are matched, they can start an email correspondence and count the many ways they love Obama.
For those who need a little help conceptualizing, the Obama solicitation comes with little chubby stick figures to help explain.

Sounds suspiciously like what Norman Hsu did for Hillary, the base of a pyramid, hey what?

Obama seems to be campaigning on telling stories about people. So-and-so's son is in Iraq. So-and-so has trouble paying her mortgage because her husband is on disability etc. etc. It's like he is trying to get us to support him based on the fact that other people like us support him. It's really calculated. He thinks if he uses these stories and promises the moon to each of these people, everyone will come flocking to support him.
It contrasts greatly with the campaign style of the man I plan to vote for-Ron Paul, who is coming to speak in Chicago tomorrow at 3pm at the Hyatt downtown. Ron Paul sticks with the issues and his views on them. He doesn't try to obfuscate by campaigning on heartwrenching stories. With Ron Paul we know exactly where he stands and how he will act as president. He has a 20 year consistent voting record in Congress that demonstrates he will actually keep his campaign promises.

Awww... a Pyramid scheme... how CUTE!
!BOGAMA!

Considering the rest of the candidates running on the right Ron Paul does come off like a freaking genius...A little like Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinic on the left. Cute, neat to see those conservatives out there who have brains have found someone to rally behind. However, just like Kucinic and Nader supporters, in the rest of the world just some radical, independent time wasting...Starting tomorrow at 3pm at the downtown Hyatt, ya plugger.

Why are there no swamp postings about campaign gimmicks other than Obama's ponzi scam?
The McCain campaign sent out pre-addressed birthday cards from the senator's wife to send contributions in on McCain's birthday. Hillary's offering (I think) free overnights in the Lincoln bedroom for chinese nationals again should she get elected.
Romney is also using a social networking site. Why only swamp love for the Obama gimmick?

Obama's campaign fund-raising, just like social security, another ponzi scheme.

Terry,
How many retirees have missed their Social Security checks?

Ponzi scheme, pyramid scheme…… maybe people posting to this report should do a little research first. In a Ponzi or Pyramid scheme the “investor” is promised a return on his / her investment. However, Obama is not promising a return on the DONATION to his campaign fund, only to connect with another donor making a similar donation in a different region of the country. Allowing people to ability to share personal information.
Wait maybe we should claim Facebook, My Space, or the myriad of other sites as Ponzi or pyramid schemes as well.

As I read the comments to this Swamp blurb I can't help but laugh at the hopelessness of the average Republican minds here. You sad folks really have nothing going for your party, do you? And I won't even stoop to making a comparison to what should be expected from the party of Lincoln. Good luck in November 2008. Love always...

Wow! Republicans complaining about how someone legally raises money? The irony. Judging from the posts here, I'm sure you'd feel better if Obama got his money the old fashioned way, by theft or kickback. By the way, how's that war thing going for you guys?

I consider it a 401k (company-matching aspect), and a pretty decent investment in America's future. I love this idea.

Well, he could always get more money from Hsu, his big bundling supporter, couldn't he? You "illegal donations" guys ran right into that one.
Please, we're obviously joking about the Ponzi scam stuff. All Obama is offering these people is.. another Obama true-beliver, not money, so it's not a Ponzi scheme. Like "The Bachelor." I never understood the idea behind a game show where all you win is another person. Oh, well, more power to them all.
It still bears asking, though, where were the Swamp posts on the John McCain birthday card donation-generating gimmick or the social networking stuff that both Hillary and Romney have done?
This is nothing new, and no matter what the Tribune would have you believe, Obama and his campaign didn't invent this fundraising gimmick.

Oh dear, Miles, you're so naive. Barack gets plenty of money the old fashioned way -- such as in bundles from lobbies and PACs.
And just because some sensible folks here don't like Obama, it doesn't automatically follow that they're Republicans.

Latest Gallup Poll numbers show a Clinton landslide: Clinton 47%, Obama 25%, Edwards 14%, Richardson 5%.
"How do they love Obama?" Easy answer: Democrats DON'T love him.

The way I see it, republicans have been ruining this country for almost 8 years. Hillary, while leading currently, plays that political game a little too well and doesn't have America's future in mind, just her own. Barack on the other hand, seems to be ideal and has the problems of the nation and how to solve them in mind. If he has created a unique way of fundraising for his campaign, and it's perfectly legal, then what's all the hubub bub?

sounds suspicious alright- hes an ox year born 1061- money mad/like to colect lots of money he knows he cant win- white people dont want to be told and dont want to be underdog with a vblack guy- oabam look like a call boy-money money money always second in the polls.
douyble standard?he s lazy as well.ou

Obama said he will bring change to politics. So far, only changes are in how to get to your wallet. He puts so much attention in the evil of everything--money ---but forgets American people will not vote for him just because he has money. The national polls showed again and again. Only native kids are still delusional about Obama.

"Barack on the other hand, seems to be ideal and has the problems of the nation and how to solve them in mind."
The problem is, he's too ideal and hasn't figured out how to pay for it. I suspect his solutions will either end up in the trash bin or will be payed for on the backs of the middle class. The rich will always figure out how to avoid taxes and pork projects will always be in the budget...

I do not see how this is a innovative campaign fund-raising technique pioneered by Obama. It seems to be an old idea but with a new delivery method. The concept of donor matching came about shortly after donors themselves.
On another point, the media reaction to Hillary's health-care coverage plan demonstrates why Hillary faces a tough battle in the general election from the Repubs. I find this ironic in that both Edwards and Obama propose plans with similarily broad proposals, save for Obama's omission of mandatory coverage.

It was fun! I did it.Someone matched my $$, and it has been an interesting exchange! Try it.

Let's see. For the last twenty years the money has gone to Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush.
I'm happy to donate to Barack Obama instead of another Bush or Clinton.
He's the only candidate I see that can bring unity and real change to this nation.
