Jenna Bush on the war: 'Very complicated subject': The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Jenna Bush’s fiance, Henry Hager, made her hike to the top of a mountain in Maine where the sun is said to first touch the mainland each morning, and that’s where he proposed marriage.

JennaBush

“He’s extremely outdoorsy,’’ Jenna Bush, the president’s daughter, says of her husband-to-be in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer to be aired Friday. “If he could spend every day outside he would. He’s very into the environment, and he was as a child, he hiked a lot. And so, now he’s trying to find a job where he can support the environment and, and be outdoors. And, so he’s a lot of fun.’’

It was in Acadia National Park where he proposed.

“We, we were on a hike,’’ she said. “ We hiked Cadillac Mountain, which is the tallest peak on the northeast. Um, it’s supposedly where the sun first hits the United States…We got up (at) four in the morning…I did not want to go hiking at four in the morning. It was freezing. But we got up, and we hiked in the dark for an hour and a half, and then when we got towards the top, with the sunrise, he asked me.”

The president’s daughter, forthcoming about her marriage plans, is less so about the war in Iraq.

“You know I'm not here to talk about that, but I'm also not a policymaker,’’ she told Sawyer in an interview to be aired by ABC News’ 20/20 . “It’s a really complicated, obviously a very complicated subject. Everybody can agree on that.”

This interview turns quickly from the personal questions to the difficult ones.

Asked about whether she and her twin sister, Barbara, should serve in the military, Jenna Bush said: “Obviously I understand that question and see what the point of that question is for sure. I think there are many ways to serve your country. I think...what’s most appropriate for me to do is to teach or to work in UNICEF and represent our country in Latin America.

“But you know I don't think it’s a practical question,’’ she said. “I think if people really thought about it, they know that we would put many people in danger. But I understand the point of it. I hope that I serve by being a teacher.”

How does she handle all those comedians on TV making fun of her father?

“We don’t watch that much television,’’ she said. “It’s a good way to, to not, to not see it…. There are a lot of supportive people, too. I mean, surprise – you know – you may not see that from the poll numbers. But I guess people that will come up and say stuff to us are people that just say, “We love your dad.” And that, obviously, makes us feel great.”

Asked about her sister, she said: “We’ve gone through every single thing together, you know from, the womb on. Imagine going through this alone. That would have been really difficult. We had each other to say, gosh, so and so said this or did you see this or you know, and we have…we’re each other’s best support system and best friends.”

She also spoke about her book, Ana’s Story, about a 17-year-old mother living with HIV, which stems from her experience working with UNICEF in Central America and the Caribbean.

“Meeting all the kids I worked with, I, I became impassioned,’’ she said. “My job for UNICEF was to document the lives of kids living in exclusion, which means, you know, in extreme poverty, living with HIV/AIDS, living in abusive households, kids that don’t have access to school or medical care.

“This book does not have a tidy ending because it is a work of nonfiction based on a life in progress,’’ she said. “Ana is a seventeen year old girl with a lifetime of choices ahead of her. This book must end, but Ana's story is still being written, this time by her.”

she's a pig like the old man

A Corner Wino,

Your post is a little over the top mate. She's not responsible for what her father does.

OMG, I like totally agree. The Iraq war is like so complicated. I'm not sure I even know how to pronounce Iraq.

Corner,

Zook's right. Since you're devoid of romance (no wonder), here's a travel tip: there's a road for driving up Cadillac Mountain too.

I agree with Doug Zook.

I just can't wait to see all the crap to be dispensed about her by the Loons from the Left. At least Doogie had the decency to be a standup guy.

like, like, like, as IF!

She works for helping people through UNICEF. Maybe she is more like the old lady than the old man. Take a look at what her fiance looks like; imagine what a young George W. must of looked like in college. That is her fiance. She is marrying her dad.

A Corner Wino

Your comment is insulting. But it fits your name. What great things have you contributed to society.

It's a complicated issue and I have no idea what kind of shoes to wear.

Master of Reality,

Sigh.

Got a degree? Or are you practising psychiatry without a license?

Chelsea Clinton works for a financial firm. Why aren't people carping about her not doing good works or going off to war ? Didn't see her old man going to Viet nam either.

The point being here, that blaming the kids for their parents' actions is just off.
I became so turned off by the mean remarks of the Left that I left them.

Alison:

Because Chelsea's mom and dad are both against the war - they have not gone around like Jenna's old man did sending everybody else's kids to Iraq. The main thought is that if there was a draft for this war, and if one of his kid's got drafted, would W. be so gung ho on this disaster??

Hey Alison here's the difference. Geoge W. Bush says that ALL Americans should be making sacrifices for the War on Terror.

Alison, we left you before you left us. You went with the extremist.

As usual, this article is about Bush, not Clinton.

Remember Al, Clinton left office with a 65 % approval rating, highest in modern history.

Alison,

Is the political world any nicer where you've gone to? If so, post directions.

I have found that people who insult others do so to justify the lack of respect they recieve from others.

Alison:

Chelsea's father did not start a war, Jenna's father did. Jenna's father sends other kids to die because it's supposedly an important cause. Except the cause is not important enough for Jenna or her betrothed to fight in.

Unlike you, Ally, Jenna can at least see why this would be an issue.

Good luck on the right, Ally. Seems evident they're more your speed anyway.

Alison,

Rush Limbaugh (called at the time) 13 year-old Chelsea Clinton a dog.

Karl Rove with Dubya's silent blessing okayed the whisper campaign against John McCain in the '00 campaign that he was nuts because he was a POW. It was these same stand up guys who insinuated McCain fathered an out of wedlock black baby when Senator & Mrs. McCain were adopting a baby from Bangladesh.

Feel better?

Asked about serving in Iraq: "But you know I don't think it’s a practical question,’’ she said. “I think if people really thought about it, they know that we would put many people in danger."
Because you're stupid like your old man? Duh . . . that's what basic training is for. I didn't know they had Valley Girls in Texas.

We need a media that knows to leave these children of politicians alone. This is not news!

No matter what she would have said, most of you would have found a way to make it sound bad or stupid.
Just for the record: Hillary Clinton voted to support the war and is the most hawkish among leading democrats, so the same should be said about her daughter.
Clinton did not have high approval ratings as he left office. The last few months brought him down significantly with the attack on the Kohl (sp?) and the scandals related to pardons and white house gifts.
Both sides are nasty at times, but Allison obviously felt the Left were too abusive and personal to a sitting President. I'm all for strong policy debates, but the personal criticisms have no place. I assume she means the leaders, not just the pundits.
Think about it: the majority of Americans elected this guy to a second term. You are just saying America is stupid to berate him personally the way you do. Essentially, you are degrading yourself. He is your representative. For the sake of the office, give some basic respect, even if you attack every policy position aggressively.
Unless you voted in '04 you don't have a right to complain.

Remember Al, Clinton left office with a 65 % approval rating, highest in modern history.

Please stop trotting that statistic out as if it actually proves something. Twinkies are also popular, so what? Try debating ideas.

Loon: "I-de-as... what's that?"

Tim,

"Clinton did not have high approval ratings as he left office."

As they say, you're entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. The fact is President Clinton left office with the highest approval ratings on record, 65%: http://uspolitics.about.com/od/polls/l/bl_historical_approval.htm . You can spin that any way you choose.

"Both sides are nasty at times, but Allison obviously felt the Left were too abusive and personal to a sitting President. I'm all for strong policy debates, but the personal criticisms have no place."

Only someone who was asleep or in a coma through the 1990's could be shocked, SHOCKED!, that after 8 years of incessant personal abuse against a POPULAR and successful sitting President AND HIS FAMILY, that Republicans would be able to act like nothing happened and plea for "civility." There was NO civility when Clinton was in office, and he was never anywhere close to as unpopular as Bush. In fact, at the height of impeachment his approval was still over 60%, which is higher than Bush's approval at any point in his second term.

For 8 years the GOP ignored the electorate and national welfare in their crusade against all things Clinton. They threatened to cut off funds to the Somalia conflict, one that Bush 41 irresponsibly tossed in Clinton's lap, and then painted Clinton, who forced a more orderly withdrawal than Senator McCain had demanded, as the "cut and runner." They fought against even modest anti-terrorism measures tooth and nail. They accused him of wagging the dog TWICE: when retaliating against Al Qaeda for the Embassy Bombings AND for stepping up the Iraqi bombing campaign in 1998 when the inspectors were thrown out.

So let's all stop pretending that politics takes place in a bubble. If it weren't for 9/11, Bush wouldn't have been re-elected, and yet without a hint of irony people still blame Clinton, who according to every impartial source was far more engaged and proactive against Al Qaeda than Bush was, for failing to stop the attacks while they were still in the planning stages, while giving Bush a permanent free pass for doing nothing whatsoever to keep the nation's two most important cities from being attacked.

And then there's Iraq, and it looks like soon enough Iran...

Oh, and if Truman were here you could ask him about approval ratings... so he was a really BAD president, right?

As for Jenna Bush she should be given a certain amount of slack here. She was obviously (and quite understandably) avoiding issues so as to not cause any controversy -- in other words playing dumb... unlike a few regulars here who don't have to pretend.

Per Stidham:

You are just saying America is stupid to berate him [Dear Leader]personally the way you do.

Actually, only about half of the voters voted for him in 2004. They're not all stupid; some pray to the God of money and saw Dear Leader as their savior.

---

I think this Jenna-Barbara-Chelsea issue has another element. They are all adults and not bound to follow their parents in lockstep.

So viewed, the criticism of Chelsea is misplaced unless she supports the war (and refuses to fight).

As for Jenna and Barbara, I don't know that they've ever really been strong supporters of the war either. Certainly nothing in the interview suggests that Jenna's a big war monger.

I'm not criticizing Jen or Bar. I'm criticizing the duplicitous murderer who spawned them.

I agree with Paul. Leave these childrens of the politicians alone. Dang it to heck these blogs on the internets. Why can't people just use the googles to read about my Freedom Initiatives.

Poor, pathetic Jaunie.

Please stop trotting that statistic out as if it actually proves something. Twinkies are also popular, so what? Try debating ideas.

WHO is Juanie?

Last time I checked, Mt. Washington in NH is the highest point in the Northeast - not Cadillac Mountain. Guess if Jenna's going to be a teacher, she should stay away from geography.

What really happened is Princess Jenna and her dashing Prince made one of their servants hike up the mountain at 4:00 in the morning and take pictures and then download them onto thier video IPods so they could enjoy looking at them while they sipped Mimosas and commented to each other how courteous and polite commoners in Maine are.

CCC,

You're right about Mt Washington, but I think there's a word missing in the article. It quotes her as saying Cadillac is the tallest "on the Northeast," when she probably said it's the tallest "on the Northeast COAST" in which case she'd be right as Cadillac is right on the Atlantic.

Her boyfriend's feral?

Hmmm, blinkin says Clinton didn't start any wars. Well I know the Left has no intelligence, so I will point out some history here:
If Bill didn't start a war, then why did we bomb Bosnia for 47 straight days?
Or all the times Clinton bombed Iraq, sometimes for several days in a row, is that not war?
Again, blinkin shows he can do no thinkin!

"If Bill didn't start a war, then why did we bomb Bosnia for 47 straight days?"

What he should have said was, Clinton didn't LOSE any wars.

You're right, John D. I should have said: "Chelsea's father didn't start a war that decimated our military, such that we had to reduce recruiting standards to nothing (no h.s. diploma; felons welcome), offer 5-figure signing bonuses and issue stop loss orders to force troops into quasi-involuntary servitude. Jenna's father did."

I found this quote very interesting. Is she saying that her father's unpopularity is tough on them?

"Imagine going through this alone. That would have been really difficult. We had each other to say, gosh, so and so said this or did you see this or you know, and we have…we’re each other’s best support system and best friends."

Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldnt help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, and if she had to die
Tryin she had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God its so painful
Something thats so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

George Bush is awesome and his daughters are beautiful. It's such ashame how this country is becoming. I'm not going to resort to name calling like everyone else on here, but stop and think about what it means to care about the world. You may not like war, no one does, but at least we have a President with a back bone who is willing to stand up to threats in the world. Oh yeah, I guess we'd be better off with Clinton in the White House again. Ha, I'd feel much safer. Yeah right!! A President Clinton simply tells us what all the polls say we want to hear, that makes us so much safer. Let's hope we don't elect another Clinton, I smell more gathering dangers in the world.

It's unbelievable to see how so many on the left are ignorant to the fact that Hillary voted to invade Iraq and send other peoples children to war yet only Bush is responsible. And Bill did the same thing in Bosnia, yet I don't see people calling him a murderer. And For those who don't seem to realize, millitary service in the US is currently completely voluntary. And Blinkin, the stop loss orders are use of an existing law that was put in place long before Bush, and was intended to be used for just such a purpose as it is being used.

I was extremely impressed with how Jenna conducted herself with the obvious " gotch ya questions". Compare Chelse C with what Jenna is doing. Due to her name she is pulling in a 6 figure income straight out of college. Good for her but, did she earn that position or did it come with a name? I agree with some things said. First with time we forget. Lewinsky--lied to American people on National TV. Clinton 2 voted for the war, and the draft is VOLUNTARY....they know what they are getting into. The ones i know would go back as they believe in the mission. Happy we have a president that is not consumed by poll #'s. That way does no one any good. Lest we forget, we were attacked not only on 9-11 but several times before that with out reprocussion, that was from the president that i guess according to some had the hightest poll #'s. What is missing here?

If Jenna's fiance wishes for work that will keep him in the outdoors, he should try the military. Service members often spend days weeks or months exposed to the elements, hiking and utilizing survival skills, sometimes in absolutely spectacular outdoors environments.

There are many kids Jenna's age dieing in a war her father started. It is a very relavent question. Perhaps if her father had considered her to fight on the front line, he would have pursued diplomacy. Many volunteers are limited in their college resources, therefore must sign up for tuition money. I understand in the "world needs ditch digger" mentality the Bush's often convey, how she would feel it's not very practical.
