With former Judge Michael Mukasey venturing into what for him promises to be most politicized territory of his career, he can count on solid support from one constituency – his former law clerks.
Forty-four of Mukasey’s clerks have signed a letter of support sent to Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate. Mukasey, President Bush’s nominee for attorney general, served as a trial judge in the Southern District of New York for almost 20 years.
“In each of his cases, Judge Mukasey based his decisions – always thoughtful, carefully crafted, and well-reasoned -– on the application of governing laws and legal principles to the facts,” the clerks say in the letter. They go on to say that Mukasey is “kind, caring, loyal, ethical and modest, with a disarming wit and robust sense of humor.”
The letter doesn’t provide much insight into what the Senate really wants to know about Mukasey: his politics. But it does note that the former judge is “deeply patriotic.” And with specific reference to the multiple terrorism trials over which Mukasey presided, the clerks say he “proceeded without complaint or hesitation, seeing it as part of his duty to the country he loves.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee, which will consider Mukasey’s nomination, has yet to schedule his confirmation hearing.

"CALLING ALL REGENTS UNIVERSITY GRADS B STUDENTS OKAY, LAW DEGREES NOT NECESSARY WE WILL TRAIN"
I can see it now! Did you believe George Bush broke the law? Yes, but give the job and I will say no.
Do you think the President broke the Presidential Records Act thus should be censored or impeached? Well, both, but if you give me the job I WON'T RECALL. RECALL WHAT, THE CONSTITUTION STUPID.
Do you think the President lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Yes, but if you give me the job, I will blame the General on the Ground.
Do you think Dick Cheney, disclosed the name of a Valerie Plame. Yes, but I will lie and say Scooter Libby did it all on his own.
DAMN YOU A HIRED, Now we just got go tell Jon Kyl he on the Judiciary Committe and he's my main man.
If MUKASEY DOES NOT TELL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE GEORGE BUSH BROKE THE LAW, AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY IN THE CONSTITUTION then is lied in his OATH as well.
SO IS THIS WHY BUSH IS ASKING CONGRESS TO RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY FIRST!
AMERICA SHOULD NOT GIVE IT TO HIM. FILLIBUSTER IT UNTIL MUKASEY SAYS YES, HE BROKE ALL THOSE LAWS.
PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS ACT!
IMPEACHMENT, IMPEACHMENT, IMPEACHMENT, IMPEACHMENT.
