President Bush isn't the only one fencing with Congress this week over the pros and cons of the "troop surge" in Iraq -- Democrats in Congress are debating the merits themselves, and on public television no less.
Tune in tonight at 6 p.m. Central on Chicago's WTTW-TV, to the PBS program "News Hour," to watch Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Rep. Brian Baird (D-Wash.) join in a panel debate on Iraq and the surge. Both Schakowsky and Baird voted against the war in 2003, and both recently visited Iraq -- but they came back with very different views of the surge's effects.
Schakowsky ripped the surge and the Bush war stratey in this week's Democratic radio address. Baird came home touting progress on the ground -- read all about it in this excellent report from The Oregonian -- and drew jeers from constituents opposed to the war.
Expect the two to highlight those contrasts on the show tonight.

Countdown for wingnuts to attack Schakowsky for having an opinion.

Oh, those fun-loving Democrats, alway scrapping among themselves. No wonder
they just can't vote to bring the troops home.

GOP Rep. John Doolittle’s two top aides have been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury investigating ties between Doolittle, his wife and jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
The grand jury subpoenas from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia were issued to Chief of Staff Ron Rogers and Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Blankenburg. They were announced on the House floor as Congress returned from its August recess Tuesday after the aides informed the House speaker about the subpoenas, as required under House rules.
Doolittle, R-Calif., said in a statement that the aides would testify before the grand jury this week “with hopes of putting the matter to an end.”[..]
Doolittle has numerous ties to Abramoff, including accepting campaign cash from the lobbyist and intervening on behalf of Abramoff’s Indian tribe clients. Doolittle considered Abramoff a good friend.
Abramoff’s lobbying firm also paid Julie Doolittle’s Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions Inc., a near-monthly $5,000 retainer from September 2002 to February 2004, mostly to work on a fundraiser that was canceled in March 2003. Sierra Dominion’s records were subpoenaed by the Abramoff grand jury in 2004.

Donny Bag of Doughnuts,
Schakowshy says that the Republican led SURGE is a failure, are you afraid to debate her on that?
Posted by: John E | September 4, 2007 9:50 PM
The Surge isn't the problem. The problem is that we cannot possibly MAINTAIN a SURGE. Indeed, by its very DEFINITION a SURGE is a TEMPORARY strategy.
The good news is that the Democrats are debating this honestly. The Republicans, on the other hand, have a small-minded tent. Everyone is afraid to step away from the president.
Eventually, though, the truth will win out. It might take until NEXT September, but eventually ALL of America will realize that IRAQIS have to determine their own future.
At that point, Bush will either invade Iran OR put MORE troops into Iraq in SURGE II, the sequel. Unfortunately for Monkey Boy, this one will go straight to video, alongside "Gigli."

Schakowsky couldn't detect the "surge" of check-kiting that was going on in her own home. Now she pontificates on the war.
Swamp scribbler Jim Tankersley, whose intellect is perhaps best shown by his misspelling of the word "strategy" ("stratey", no less!) in the above article, seems content to ignore how Schakowsky pleaded ignorance at her husband's trial. To me, her avowal of ignorance sounds believable.

John E., most Democrats who have been to Iraq including Carl Levin say the surge is working. In fact, most of those who have been to Iraq say the surge is working, except for the Communist-wannabe and Partner-in-Crime Jan Schakowsky. Schakowsky is a career defeatist, though she and her husband are career swindlers. I'll take the liberal Brian Baird's opinion on this one.

Am I alone in noticing certain 'contributors' regularly pose non-relevant questions of simple fact (although phrased with plenty of spin and innuendo), with answers they could easily look up for themselves? How can someone reading the Trib online not understand the basics of using a search engine? Incredibly ignorant or incredibly lazy - we report, you decide. ;-)
I'm sure we would all be most appreciative if Don B. would listen quietly while the grownups finish talking about the actual subject at hand.

The point of my posting was simply this Tom J. ..people who reside in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones. It's also a bit of a stretch to include John E. as a grownup in any discussion on the swamp, obviously Tom your new to this forum.

Tom J., Don B asks a relavant question. If Schakowsky is a known liar and criminal accomplice (if you believe she had no knowledge of her husband's illegal activities, then you better get that brain checked) and a lefist with a defeatist agenda, then thsat needs to be questioned and looked at.
If liberal, anti-war Congressman Brian Baird comes back and says progress is being made and leaving now would create a worse situation, then he needs to be questioned and listened to.

Public Broadcasting TV and radio is costing the American taxpayers $400 million a year to feed the egos of leftists like Jan Schakowski. Bill Moyers was Lyndon Johnson's press secretary and rabid Dem he gets plenty of exposure on this government paid broadcasting system. We neede PBS like a hole in the head. Stop funding now taxpayers! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Next September we will have eight hundred to one thousand more dead soldiers and will be in the same or worse position than we are now. We heard the same arguments in September, 2004 and 2005 and 2006 and now 2007. What is wrong with you people. Do you realize that Iraq is the worst mistake in American history and we are still building on it. If we leave in the Spring it will be after five years of failure.

Jerry,
Did you really say we should abolish PBS? I wonder if bruce agrees with you on this. Seems the Ken Burns series on the Civil War ran on PBS. Had I known it was all leftist propaganda, I wouldn't have bothered to watched.
There's been lots of other scandalous programming recently on PBS. I just saw a feature on the science of tracking hurricanes. Damned lefties. Then there was that episode a couple weeks ago about Emperor penguins. They must be leftist dems.
You know, History tells us that when dictatorships start feeling threatened, some of the first to be eliminated are the scholars, scientist, teachers, intellectuals. So, I guess you're safe, whew!

Bruce, I'm glad to see that you're not man enough to stick to the topic at hand; rather, you follow your RNC talking points & attack the messenger instead.

John D;
Either post PROOF that you know she lied on the stand, i.e. committed perjury, or admit that you're blowing smoke out of your nether region again.
