Sen. Larry Craig has all but dropped any notion of trying to complete his term, and is focused on helping Idaho send a new senator to Washington within a few weeks, his spokesman said today.
"The most likely scenario, by far, is that by October there will be a new senator from Idaho," Craig spokesman Dan Whiting has told the Associated Press.
The only circumstances in which Craig might try to complete his term, Whiting said, would require an overturning of his conviction for disorderly conduct in a men's room at the Minneapolis airport by Sept. 30, his announced resignation date, as well as Senate Republican leaders' agreement to restore Craig's committee leaderships posts.
Those scenarios are unlikely, Whiting said.
Craig, a three-term Republican, met Wednesday with Idaho's Republican Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter to discuss a transition in which Otter would name his Senate replacement, Whiting said.
Even if Craig were to complete his term, he said, the senator would not seek re-election in 2008.
Whiting said Craig remains intent on clearing his name through the legal process in Minnesota and by having the Senate ethics committee address his claim that his misdemeanor conviction should not be a matter for action by the panel.
Craig had announced Saturday his intention to resign at the end of the month after a police report alleged he had solicited sex from a male officer at the Minneapolis airport in June. He then reversed course to challenge the guilty plea he entered in August.
Senate Republican leaders strongly urged Craig to step down, making clear they would not support his efforts to complete his term, which ends in early 2009.
The Senate ethics committee this week rebuffed a request by Craig's attorney, Stanley Brand, that it not investigate a complaint against the senator because events were "wholly unrelated" to his official duties. The panel's leaders said they believe Senate rules give them authority to investigate any "improper conduct, which may reflect upon the Senate."
And Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky made it clear this week that Craig made the right choice in announcing his resignation on Saturday.
The Associated Press produced this report.

Logic P,
If Idaho had a Democratic Governor there would be Repugs circling their wagons around Craig in support of him and their desire to save a Republican seat in the Senate.
The Nascar Party is full of hypocrites.

Oh Deranged Johnny E., let's bring some news into a massive corruption sting on your little Demoncratic party in the state of New Jersey:
Two mayors and two state legislators are among 11 public officials arrested in New Jersey as part of a corruption investigation, the U.S. attorney's office in Trenton announced Thursday.
"The defendants allegedly demanded and accepted payments ranging from $1,500 to $17,500 at any one time," the release from the U.S. attorney's office alleges. "In most cases, the defendants sought to establish and perpetuate a corrupt relationship with the cooperating witnesses to continue receiving bribes."
State Assemblymen Mims Hackett Jr. and Alfred E. Steele -- both Democrats -- and Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera are among those arrested, the news release says.
Steele also serves as undersheriff in Passaic County, just outside Newark. Hackett is also mayor of Orange. Watch who is involved ยป
Also arrested were Keith O. Reed, the chief of staff to the Newark City Council president, Passaic Councilman Marcellus Jackson and former Passaic Councilman Jonathan Soto, the release states.
Five current and former school board members in Pleasantville, just outside Atlantic City, were arrested, too: Jayson G. Adams, James T. McCormick, James A. Pressley, Rafael Velez and Maurice Callaway, who also serves on the City Council.
A private citizen, Louis Mister, was snatched up in the sting as well, the release states.
"Each of the 11 public officials and one associate accepted the corrupt payments from companies that offered insurance brokerage or roofing services to school districts and municipalities," according to the news release.
The probe began in mid-2006, "amid evidence of corruption in the Pleasantville School District," the release states.
"In response, the FBI established an undercover insurance brokerage company purporting to employ the government's two cooperating witnesses and undercover agents," according to the U.S. attorney's office.
Pleasantville school board members allegedly accepted thousands of dollars in bribes from the cooperating witnesses, the release states.
The Pleasantville school board members also referred undercover agents to public officials in northern New Jersey, who accepted bribes as well, according to the release. The northern New Jersey officials referred the undercover agents to "still other corrupt public officials," the news release states.
The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey, citing sources close to the investigation, reported that the officials were arrested on bribery charges. The U.S. attorney's office said it would divulge the charges Thursday afternoon.
Those arrested will begin making appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Tonianne Bongiovanni at 2 p.m. Thursday. U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie and FBI agent Weysan Dun are expected to hold a 3:30 p.m. news conference afterward in front of the federal courthouse in Trenton.
And, then we have how many Demoncrats in the state of Illinois under investigation, under indictment or on their way to prison????
And on the national level, we have William Jefferson, Harry Reid, Allan Mollohan, John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi, Dienne Feinstein, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama (Tony Rezko and Norman Hsu), and a hjost of other Demoncrats. Funny, I don't recall you commenting on wanted felon Norman Hsu being on the lam again???
So, if all you Demented Loons can do is concentrate on Dingy Larry Craig and his bathroom misadventures, fine. But the REAL CRIMES are largely being committed by the Demoncrats. It's always been that way and always will be that way. Career criminals = Democrats.

I hope Craig stays because he can beat this.
Remember Bill Clinton? How many millions of dollars, countless Star lawyers, grassroots crusading from the far right, & other bs & look where it got you. He still was able to complete his term as one of the best presidents ever.
I've argued several years ago that trying to get rid of Clinton will bite republicans in the long term, but of course, no one would listen.
If, with alllll that effort & you couldn't get rid of Bill, unless Craig really does resign, you won' be able to get rid of Craig.

Once again, j D goes off topic because he knows there is no way to defend lc's actions, and that all lc's flip floppin' is exactly what the republitards were making so much fun of at the republican national cornhole when referring to the candidate running against Darth Invader and his chief spittle producer - pretzel boy. Man, it must be getting really tiresome defending all these values candidates when they keep tripping over their respective appendages.

Yea it is too bad that Craig is a Republican; if he was a Democrat he wouldn't have to appologize or even resign. Why, if he was simply convicted of a felony, say perjury, he could probably remain in office. Or if he were caught using crack, chances are he could come back and get reelected as the Mayor of DC.

I think I have the soultion for this. It seems to work for other hypocrits, so not for this.
What needs to purchased by Senator Craig are "Gay Offset Credits". These would just like the carbon offset credits. When Senator Craig needs to have a gay fling in an airport, he just buys a "gay off-set credit" to ease his mind from a 100% hetrosexual - say Bill Clinton - he's proved that enough. Senator Craig's hypocracy will be sootheed since he will have bought an offset from Bill Clinton which will be used to purchase some Playboy magazines.
If you are having a hard time following this, think of how the carbon off-set credits work. Say a big environmentalist, Al Gore, wants to take his private jet from San Francisco to New York to give an important speech on global warming. Big Al feels a little guilty about using the private jet, so he buys some carbon offsets that are then used to plant some trees.
Simple huh?

Larry Craig (R-Idaho) is a naughty boy. You know the ethical, moral, principled, family values guy. Got caught with his pants down in the men's restroom. Trying to pick up another male. Playing footsie with him. Peeking into his stall. Then he tries to hide it. Admits guilt then tells us all he's not guilty or gay. What a way for a United States Senator to behave.
