The Swamp

A quick guided tour of some of the morning's most important or most interesting (or both) Washington-related stories.

The investigation of $6 billion of defense contracts tied to the Iraq War is widening with charges against 29 individuals, scores of criminal probes and the suicides of two Army officers.

Officials within the Pentagon have urged U.S. military snipers to place detonation cords, explosives and other items of potential interest to insurgents as bait to kill Iraqis who try to gather them up as possible insurgents.

The dismissive attitude of Michael Mukasey, President Bush's nominee to be attorney general, to allegations of the mistreatment of innocent Muslim men arrested after 9/11, are the basis for some criticism of the former federal judge.

The visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the United Nations has incensed many New Yorkers and Americans generally and is reminiscent of past visits by other controversial leaders like Fidel Castro and Yassir Arafat.

The U.S. dollar's drop against other currencies could help U.S. exports.

The Federal Reserve's lowering of interest rates in an effort to stave off a recession has raised inflation anxieties.

The Democratic-controlled Congress is pushing a plan to greatly expand protected wilderness areas, a major shift of direction from the Republican Congress.

A lawyer-glut is raising questions about the value of law-school educations as investments as many lawyers are finding it difficult to find jobs that pay enough to let them pay off enormous debts incurred for their legal educations.

The debate in Washington over federal program meant to fund health insurance for children in lower income families comes down to the question of how far up the income ladder should the program's assistance go?

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said if he can get enough donors to put him on a trajectory to raise $30 million he will enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination since ever more Republicans have been asking him to run in order to take on Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Amazing you hear absolutely nothing from Repubs in regards to billions and billions being wasted in Iraq.

Dear Tribune editors, how about a Swamp post on how the New York Times has FINALLY admitted it made a mistake by giving moveon.org a sweetheart deal and a cheaper platform for its attack on the General who leads our troops in Iraq.

Or are you not going to run a piece with a tacit admission of a mistake by a fellow newspaper? You scratch their backs, they scratch yours, eh?

The Washington Post isn't scratching the NY Times' back: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/23/AR2007092300752.html
