INDIANOLA, Iowa — Hours before the Democratic presidential contenders were to speak at Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry fundraisers, the candidates' youthful supporters were out in full force -- and voice.
Chanting the names of their candidates, supporters took up strategic locations along U.S. 65/69, the main route between Indianola and Des Moines, as well as Iowa 92, the road leading to the site of today's event, the Indianola Balloon Field.
There is no loss of irony on the fact that the six main Democratic presidential contenders will be giving speeches at the same location that hot-air balloons are launched during the National Balloon Classic that ran from the end of July through early August.
Only a year ago, several thousand people turned out for Harkin's event to see headliner Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois who, at the time, had said he was not a 2008 presidential candidate and had no interest in running.
That was then and this is now and Obama finds himself sharing this year's headliner duties with his rivals for the Democratic nomination, Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York, Joe Biden of Delaware, Chris Dodd of Connecticut, former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
Harkin has indicated he will not make an endorsement in the presidential race and said he doesn't think independent-minded Iowans like to be told what to do.

"Only a year ago, several thousand people turned out for Harkin's event to see headliner Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois who, at the time, had said he was not a 2008 presidential candidate and had no interest in running."
He announced a couple months later and must have had an interest in Sept. 2006.
In short, Obama lied.
But he's telling everyone the truth NOW ......

Obama wanted his steak rare
Biden cut in three parts
Dodd in a sandwich
Hillary smothered in mystery sauce
Edwards filed a lawsuit because it was too tough
Dennis is still lost

The terrible thing is no traffic control. We waited in our car, in a slow moving line from the north side of Indianola to the gate 3.5 hours. We did get our steak, but missed the speaker, did hear Hillary and then had to leave to escape another traffic jam. Too bad, no traffic control and they didn't have speakers up where the people were eating to hear what the they said.
I am voting for Hillary, she was the only speaker we could hear.
However, she did say what needed to be said, I think she has the best chance because she has the American heart

Aardvark, you can watch the speeches on YouTube. And next time you'll know not to drive in from the north - with or without traffic control, the road's narrow and there aren't multiple entrances. The eating is always up the hill, the speakers are always down the hill. That's so the audience can sit in their lawn chairs and actually see the speakers.
Bruce, has it occurred to you that the reception Obama received might have convinced him that 2008, rather than 2012 (or 2016), would be his year to run?

Bruce sounds like a spurned lover with all his Obama cattiness. Hang in there, girlfriend.

Senator Harkin adding to the beef industry and thus the methane gas in the atmosphere. Bad Lib. How big was that carbon/methane footprint?

"Harkin has indicated he will not make an endorsement in the presidential race and said he doesn't think independent-minded Iowans like to be told what to do."
Iowans proved how much they don't like to be told what to do last time when they sternly rebuked Harkin's 2004 endorsee, Howard Dean.

Hey Aardvark, makes sense that someone who takes the wrong way to get there, arrives late, then after hearing only part of the information decides to vote for Hillary. Fitting, isn't it?

Yes Bruce seems to think people can't evolve and change their minds. I had for a long time looked for negatives on Barack. Then i found "one" his coal to oil support, then "Barack" changed his mind and realized that he was wrong and decided to help the earths global warming issue by saying he would only support coal to oil if it was 20% less poluting than oil. The other candidates have many many negatives and some still keep supporting their negatives.
America uses and abuses oil. It would take 3 planet earths if all the people of the world used and abused oil like we do.
Myself i don't own a car. I share with an 84 yr old woman and i have insulated her attic. We recycle everything. We use blankets or sweathers rather than turning the heat up.Yes we went to war in Iraq for oil. Thankfully allan greenspan is telling the truth. The democrats in Pa are also telling the truth. I was at a democratic state committee meeting where i was told about Iraq selling oil for euro's and so bush wanted to attack. Now he wants to attack Iran. He goes to the UN to demand the right to attack Iran on sept 25th.
Its such a shame americans would rather send their kids to die for oil than doing things like Gov. Rendell in pa is doing by building windmills and solar power.
The republicans all drive their SUV's and are a part to the deaths of our soldiers. yes some dems do this too and they too need to learn to change their wastefull ways.
Thank you Barack for caring and helping to bring about the truth and a way that will allow all the worlds people live together and not have to kill one another for oil. Oil that belongs to others not the imperialistic USA bush clinton regime.

I've watched the YouTube.com's of the day's events and I gotta say - WOW! I'm down here in Florida and so envious to have a Congressperson so intune with constituents, so many like-minded Democrats, and of course, WOWSER to have so many authentic and real candidates. Let's face it folks, we Democrats, we're pretty darned lucky in the Presidential campaign.
Again, Barack Obama knocked it out of the park and again, he inspires me to get active in calling my Congress representatives and for me to make a difference.

First, Sen. Obama was asked to run for president in 2008 by tens of thousands of American who believe he is the answer to many of the things that ail us.
Second, Sen. Clinton did her usual vote for me because I'm a woman and you can tell your daughter she can be whatever she wants to be. I tell my daughter that now. I don't need a vagina litmus for a presidential contest to tell my daughter to reach for the stars.
Third, it's plain as day that Sen. Clinton and others are now using Sen. Obama's language in an attempt to be the person Sen. Obama is. They don't communicate a sense of truth, honesty, and caring because they don't feel it. They're just spewing words - saying anything they think my get them a vote.
Sen. Obama cares and it comes across. Sen. Obama is honest and it comes across. Sen. Obama is trustworthy and it comes across. Sen. Obama is sincere and it comes across. The only other candidates I could say this about is Kucinich and Gravel.
