The last time Thompson, right, drew this much attention in Washington is when he escorted John Roberts, the president's nominee for chief justice, center, through the Senate, in 2005.

As Fred Thompson strolls out on the set of the Tonight Show tonight, on the eve of his Website-launched announcement of a campaign for the White House, analysts are taking a close look at that seemingly simple, "I'm With Fred'' Web-site that got him here.
Thompson, the former senator from Tennessee and star of television's Law and Order, has not been a formally declared candidate for months, but that hasn't stopped him from raising millions of dollars in his "exploratory'' summer campaign.
"He’s been running a vigorous campaign in cyberspace for some time,'' the Project for Excellence in Journalism reports. A study released by the project shows: "Thompson’s full-service Web site is among the most sophisticated of anyone running, which has caused some people to wonder if Thompson has overstepped the legal boundaries of “testing the waters” or if he is just taking advantage of a loophole in federal election law. ''
An examination of the "content and functionality" of Thompson’s site -- Imwithfred.com -- finds many ways in which viewers can "get involved with the campaign, surpassing most of his GOP rivals for interactivity and making for an active fundraising tool.''
"The one thing missing on the site,'' the report notes, "is a breakdown of where Thompson stands on the issues.''
See the report.
See the Web-site.

If Thompson drags his campaign announcement out any longer his supporters are going to need Viagra.

Doug, weren't you criticizing just last week about how long the election season is? Thompson is announcing in September, after Labor Day, which is a lot more realistic. And, while, it seems drawn out, I think that has more to do with the media just trying to fill pages and airwaves with speculation, commentary and whatever else it is they do.

John D.,
Do you recall in May when Thompson leaked that he was going to announce shortly after Independence day?
That's my beef John, the long tease.
We agreed long ago that the length of the campaign is insane. In fact, the only people who benefit from this process are the people making a buck off this extended process.

Mr. Law and Inorder Thompson doesn't stand a chance. Not the slightest. Let him waste his time and money. I'm going to sit back and watch him fizzle.

ditto, John D, ditto...indeed...
Those darned Lefty Loonies and their smarmy ways!

I cannot agree more. The candidates hide behind their well paid spin scum to hide their inadequacies. No campaigning should be allowed before September. This would force the cadidates to narrow their BS and put them on the spot. This would give each candidates bs a better chance to surface.
"Those darned Lefty Loonies and their smarmy ways"
OK "Smirky McFlightsuit", if you have a beef with a "lefty", use a name, or names. These illierate monikers get old quickly. I have read "loony lefties" more times than I can keep track of. Tell us WHICH leftys you are badhing. If you simply target the party, you allow each member of that party escape PERSONAL responsability. So, save the playground name calling for the playground. Do your homework, track candidates records and make an informed statement. Or at least find some new material.

Dick Morris remarks that Thompson's son, Daniel, is getting a pretty sweet payoff from his dad's campaigning! A hefty PAC rollover anyone?

The "Wide Stance" party is going to love Thompson. His wife is four years younger than his daughter. I wonder how she does on the stump... I meant the campaign trail.

Rob S.,
It's not just consultants. It's pollsters, printers, hotels, airlines, car renters and on and on and on.
That's why it costs so damn much money to be competitive.

Rob S., take a chill pill. Anyway, Mr. Smirky McFlightsuit, er John E., or Neal, or dt, is aiming his silliness at me not the Loony Left. I am the one who calls the Looniest elements of the Left, the Loony Left, not Smirky McFlightsuit. You should know that by now.

You said a mouthful kemo-sabe. The candidates receive free services from all of those you lsited, so it is undeniable that votes go to the highest bidder.
OK, I don't care how, why or towards folks use "loony left", it's time has come. Time for some fresh material.

Hey Rob, how does Maniacal Left sound? Goofy Left? Demented Left? Deranged Left?
I could use left wing nutjob, but then that would be copying the Lefties who call me and other conservatives wingnuts. Perhaps Neo-Left? They love that Neo word a lot, even using it for any conservative or moderate they disagree with.

Rob S.,
You're wrong buddy.
There is something called an "in-kind contribution" but the vast majority of these costs/fees are paid at the going rate.
The $BIG MONEY$ is a media buy (TV) and nobody gets a pass on that.

Wow, Johnny D, even a fellow Republican thinks your gibberish is inane, tiresome, second-rate and boring. I, as a "loony lefter," just think you're a buffoon. But every man is entitled to his own opinion.
You have turned more people off to your ideology with the incessant 2nd-grade name-calling then you could possibly hope to win over. Keep up the good work.

I'm not too surprised by Thompson's delaying of officially announcing his candidacy. As soon as he does so, NBC will have to pull all episodes of "Law & Order" from their rerun schedule and from syndication. By waiting until so close to the fall TV season, Thompson and the rest of the actors in his episodes can still collect residuals.

Distrust and Verify, if you think I practice second-grade name calling, what do you call this from your kindergarten Lefty brethren:
Johnny Dirtbag, Johnny Dufus, Johnny Ding Dong, Little GOP Johnny, or even the poster, John E., with his Chimpy McFlightsuit???
Sorry, if Loony Left offends you so. If it does, wise up and turn to the bright side -- the wingnut Right!!

I've read your drivel long enough to know that you pick the fights, and occasionally other children join in with you.
You are a one-man walking self-fulfilling prophecy.
You start by throwing out insane insults to everyone and everyone, and then cry foul when THEY RESPOND TO YOU IN KIND.
To say you are the pot calling the kettle black is a disservice to pots everywhere.

You can put a beutiful swag, with French twill edging and lace center on a pig sty, it is still a sty and stinks.
You can call them "in-kind" or whatever. When the terms they use now to cover their greed and theft no longer work, they will come up with new ones. They are corrupt, period. No window dressing is going to make me think otherwise.
I will state for the record that I use my real first name and last initial. I do not need to hide behind inane monikers like the class misfits that are so near and dear to us. I do not need to respond to Jon or Doug as "Johnny and Dougie". I have enough marbles to not stoop to that level.
There are people on this blog who are confident enough to speak their mind without dressing it up to hide the inadequacies of their remarks. So, John D. use whatever you want. All of the other "names" you quote in your last blog fall into the same category as you. Not enough marbles to state their opinions openly.
