House Republican Leader John Boehner says Rush Limbaugh is getting a bad rap. The Ohio Republican complained today that "liberal organizations'' are making "disingenuous and slanderous attacks'' against Limbaugh.
Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson has weighed in on Limbaugh's side, too.
It's been a week now since Limbaugh spoke of "phony soldiers'' during a conversation with callers about people calling for troop withdrawals from Iraq on his radio program. Limbaugh said later that he had only one "phony'' in mind, Jesse MacBeth, someone who had attested to atrocities in Iraq but never served there. Then Limbaugh went on to name some "genuine phony soldiers,'' including the war-protesting Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Pa.), a decorated veteran.
And when the anti-war VoteVets.org came up this week with a wounded Iraq veteran willing to appear in television ads slamming Limbaugh for his "phony soldiers'' remark, Limbaugh likened the man to a suicide bomber carrying wanton lies into the marketplace of ideas.
Much of the Democratic criticism for Limbaugh has served as retaliation for the licking the party took when MoveOn.org ran an ad in the New York Times, at a discounted rate, calling Gen. David Petraeus "General Betray Us.'' Republicans demanded apologies of Democrats, who in turn are demanding apologies of Limbaugh and the Clear Channel radio network.
"All it takes to conclude that this is a manufactured controversy is a simple, cursory review of Mr. Limbaugh's remarks, so pardon me if I am not moved by the crocodile tears shed by left-wing activists in recent days,'' Boehner said. "Moveon.org and its cohorts on and off the Hill would certainly like to change the subject away from the slanderous advertisement they placed in the New York Times about U.S. General David Petraeus, but they are not going to distract anyone with a controversy manufactured out of whole cloth.
"Frankly,'' the leader said, "there can be no comparison.''
Senate Democrats already have taken the Limbaugh matter to the Senate floor, and more than 40 have signed a letter to Clear Channel, whose CEO in turn says he cannot speak for what Limbaugh had on his mind but defends his right to say it -- CEO Mark Mays also apologizes for any offense that may have been taken.
"Unlike Democratic leaders, Rush's goal is to boost troop morale, not depress it by stalling the resources troops need to complete their mission,'' Boehner said. "Should House Democrats decide to bring forward a ludicrous resolution condemning Limbaugh, Republicans will take to the floor to set the record straight - and welcome the opportunity to do so."
Thompson, the former senator from Tennessee seeking the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nomination, posted a statement in support of the radio host on his campaign web-site.
"Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh.'' said Thompson, himself a star of TV and film -- having portrayed a prosecutor on NBC's Law and Order. "He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?''
Limbaugh, for his part, is having the time of his show with this one.
There are "two schools of thought'' on how to handle a controversy like this, he has told his listeners. "The two schools of thought are: 'Ignore it, Rush, don't let 'em distract you; don't let them divert you.''' (Although, that actually sounds like one school of thought). "Folks,'' he said, "they cannot distract me and they cannot divert me, and I'm not going to let this slide.''

What's the other school of thought? This is another example that it's not possible, intellectually, to follow what Rush is talking about.

This is a red herring on the part of the Dems. The identical subject was raised 2 days earliers by Brian Ross on ABC and they ignore it. Rush did nothing wrong. They just dislike the fact that Rush is correct is pointing out the lies and damage this fake soldier and others like him have done in support of the anti-war movement and moveon.org. Furthermore, a careful reading of this article also shows bias in the non-objective way it is presented.

Snark from the "internets"..
"JOHN BOEHNER AND LINDSEY GRAHAM GIVE COMEDIAN RUSH LIMBAUGH AWARD"
Washington, DC (APE) - Comedian and political pundit Rush Limbaugh today received a commendation and special award from the U.S. Senate for his help in identifying "phony soldiers". Limbaugh had earlier in the week declared on his talk radio show that troops who return from Iraq and criticized the president or his war policies were simply, "phony soldiers". Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina stepped forward to publicly thank Limbaugh and offer a plaque in appreciation for his remarks and promised to push through a nonbinding commendation for his efforts.
Both promised to expedite the resolution through the Senate, and push for its overwhelming adoption in the House of Representatives.
"I believe the recent nonbinding condemnation of the dastardly ad from MoveOn will make it much easier for senators to approach this resolution in a more positive and bipartisan fashion," stated Senator Graham. "What's more, as an active reservist, I think that this is something we need to take a very close look at both in the active duty military and reserves. It would be invaluable to identify "phony soldiers" very early on and take steps to reform them."
"Mr. Limbaugh is just speaking from the heart," stated a tearful Representative Boehner. "He's just expressing feelings common to a lot of us in the House; feelings that we have frankly been afraid to express since the Democrats have ruthlessly seized power, and thwarted our attempts to shut down all forms of dialog and debate."

Since the media only focuses on select anti-war Vet groups, let's see what the VFW says about the moveon.org "Gen. Betruyus" ad:
VFW Statement on MoveOn.org attack on Army Gen. David H. Petraeus:
"It was absolutely unacceptable for MoveOn.org to ridicule and question the motives and allegiances of America's senior military commander in Iraq. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus is trying to win a war as quickly and with as few casualties as possible. He and the men and women under his command must remain focused on the enemy at their front and not the naysayers at home."
The VFW has not made a comment yet in regard to the Dems, Loony Left and their media lapdogs in regard to Limbaugh calling folks who pretend they are soldiers as being "phony soldiers," which again is what ABC News and reporter Brian Ross called them as well.

Is it the job of Congressmen to defend hack commentators? Republicans used to whine all the time about waste of taxpayers' dollars, but they certainly have been energetically wasting them in this Administration--from soup to--dare we say it--nuts?

He expresses the second school of thought in the statement of what he intends to do; not let it slide:
"Folks," he said, "they cannot distract me and they cannot divert me, and I'm not going to let this slide."
This epidemic difficulty with basic reading comprehension is what started this silliness in the first place.

I support Mr. Limbaugh and all those who have the courage to publicly stand in his defense! Ditto's to all of you and now the right just may start speaking out how they feel! Truth always prevails! It will set us free and if we don't start standing up to the left, our children will believe their lies they are constantly putting out there as truth! We are not in the minority...the left is the minority...continue to stand for what is right people...that is why we are the RIGHT!

After spending 27+ yrs on active duty with the Marine Corps, take it for what it's worth: Since the war commenced, Rush has more then done his job to truly SUPPORT Veterans and the Active Duty Members of the Military..... all while the democrats have went weak-in the-knees on us. Dems are working their butts off to overcome their stupidity related to the recent SNAFU
with Gen Petraus. By Rush's actions he earns the respect of military members/veterans on a daily basis... Not by providing lip service and genuflecting to the Sorrus and Moveon.org crew.
Hang in there Rush.

The Democrats, egged on by their leftist
buddies at MoreOn.org, are just trying to distract attention from the fact that
84 percent of them voted to continue funding for the war two days ago. And also from their general incompetence as a majority party. They did better when they
were carping in the wilderness. But, when your leader is a wimp like Harry Reid, what can you expect? He couldn't lead a thirsty dog to a pan of water.

Rush is right. Any person in the military who speaks out against his duty, his commanders or anything that is part of his mission is a phony soldier.
A true soldier will do the job and never say boo.
Any soldier who is saying the commander in chief is not acting in the interest of the country is acting in the interests of the terrorists and that phony soldier should be put in the brig for treason.
In ww2, these guys would have just been shot on the battlefield and left for the crows. These days they are allowed to blog and send their money to moveon.org and its way past time to start prosecuting these dissenters. Even those who go awol arent as bad as these traitorous filth. Rush is a hero, the fake soldiers who wear our uniform yet side with terrorists need to be called out for what they are and its high time we start treating them like the traitors that they are.

MOVE-ON AD calling Gen. David Petraeus "General Betray Us.'' was not in the new york ad. the ad was not slanderous but asking a relevant question. do you think we are going to believe what he had to say. his boss is george w. bush. think about it. what could he say. it was a big waste of taxpayer money and then to spend more time criticising an ad that actually was asking the right question is simply more than i can handle. what has happened to our leaders.human beings are dying in many parts of the globe because of our involvement of lack of it and our leaders are acting like children.

Bush/Cheeney/Wolf and BushCo are the perps and those in the Dem. led congress are the accomplices.

@John Freeman
"Any soldier who is saying the commander in chief is not acting in the interest of the country is acting in the interests of the terrorists and that phony soldier should be put in the brig for treason."
So much for "freedom of speech". I guess it only works if you are a mullah in Iran, eh John?
What about retired soldiers, John? Are they working for the terrorists too? What about all of those "phony soldiers" who criticized Clinton for deploying armed forces in the Balkans in the 1990's? I guess they were just good Americans who were expressing their disgust at a tyrannical president who overstepped his authority, right?
You neo-cons make the rest of us on the right look like idiots. People like Rush are using you like a cheap circus pony, riding you all the way to the bank. Do you think his choice of words was accidental? Hardly. While I think the Moveon.org folks are shameful for their attack on a man who, as one reader put it, is trying to do his job with as few losses as possible, Rush is doing his job while hoping to inflict as much damage as he can.
He could care less about Republicans or Democrats; he cares about ratings and the bottom line. That's why he uses incendiary language and engages in ad hominem attacks.
Who would ever consider a man "honorable" that attacks a 14-year-old child because they are the daughter of the president?
Yeah, give that guy a medal.
Posted by: Marv Swett | October 3, 2007 6:24 PM
Rush Limbaugh's "fake" soldiers were soldiers who had opinions that didn't coincide with what he and the other radical right thought it ought to. ABC's fake "soldiers" were non-military people who were trying to cadge benefits they weren't entitled to. Don't confuse the two.
It's deplorable to be trying to say that the men and women who are fighting and, too often, dying for us are somehow not as worthy as the good old REPUBLICAN soldiers, and I hope Limbaugh gets cut off from his Viagra permanently for it. ABC, on the other hand, did exactly the right thing in defending benefits given to our servicepeople against frauds trying to get something for nothing.

Good to know Fascism is alive and well. I was worried that it had become unfashionable. I congratulate John Freeman on his clarity of position, but he doesn't go nearly far enough. I think that since being a democrat is synonymous with being "traitorous filth", we should root out the 25% or so of the military that are registered Democrats and we should have them all quartered and shot like awol'ers. I'm sure there are lots of "true soldiers" and true patriots like John Freeman who would volunteer for the killing detail. Then we could move on to dealing with the liberals, since they don't love Amerika, and they only love the terrorist too. Sincerely. JR

The problem with Fascism (here and elsewhere) is that it never appears to be fascism to the fascists themselves, who often claim to be fighting fascism themselves.
It would be quite an amusing and funny thing to observe if it was not so damn dangerous. Walking time bombs like John "Freeman" are great example of this.

Rush Limbaugh has made a career out of distorting the truth and to bend it to right wing dogmas. It is refreshing that he is getting back the same. Perhaps some are even seeing for what he is actually worth; “A Great Devisor.” His distortions and lies over the years have done more damage to our nation than any terrorist could dream. I would bet they, the real terrorists, laugh at how his ideas are changing America. Changing the US of A is what has been their goal. Rush is just helping (abetting) along. We have polarized into righties and lefties and have grown suspicious of each other. That is a change not healthy to free a society. But Limbaugh and his like minded army would welcome a “safe” police state; they would like a world where all think like them. That would be the end of America and what it stands for and destroy with it the greatest document on earth, the Constitution of the US of A.
In WWII we hung Germans and Nazis because they “followed orders” without questioning, but when it happens in our supposed free society we also hang our own. Patriotism in its true sense is that you have the courage to question and not just follow along like some moronic lemming. Aiding the terrorist, as one mindless contributor said earlier? How? By following the same stupidity in leadership? By falling for the lies of this administration and the strong-armed tactics of the Rovian philosophy? We have “phony patriots” within our borders who will promote and hide behind a dogma of fear to stay in power and turn the best country in the world into a police state. Descent is a privilege unknown in other parts of the world. But according to a lot of writers above this is not Ok. We have had soldiers die for over two centuries to give us that privilege, but JUST DON”T DARE USE IT!!

People from the right and the left who waste time and energy bickering and trying to box politics into "right or left".
The fact of the matter is elections are won by people in the CENTER, the vast majority of people in this great nation. Where's the focus for what really matters, the real issues?
Please stop the bickering about "Rush should be ashamed" and "Move-On should be censured". The people you should be concerned about how they'll vote in 2008 really don't care for these petty soap operas. There is an old military saying that may be appropriate for those liberals, including some Congressmen and Generals that think otherwise, "They need to pull their head out of their butt" and listen to what is being said, in the context of what is being said.

Media Matters for America monitored The Rush Limbaugh Show from March 15 to April 29. During that time, Limbaugh used the term "femi-Nazis" eight times; he suggested that women want to be sexually harassed; he repeatedly equated Democrats with terrorists; he twice resurrected long-discredited right-wing claims that Clinton deputy White House counsel Vince Foster was murdered; he repeatedly called Senator John Kerry a "gigolo"; he called environmentalists "total wackos"; he called Howard Dean "a very sick man"; he said Democrats "hate this country"; he referred several times to Democratic National Committee Chair Terry McAuliffe as a "punk" ... and so on. (Media Matters)
Why does this nut-job deserve any mention? Also, does anyone notice how many of these statements have been repeated almost verbatim by John D., Jerry White, Spingfield, Il. and other ditto-heads?
How can we be having a discussion about someone who makes statements like these:
1) Some of these babes, I'm telling you, like the sexual harassment crowd. They're out there protesting what they actually wish would happen to them sometimes. Limbaugh[4/26/04]
63) Why is the United States of America almost always alone in carrying this burden? We are almost always alone, Senator Kerry, because Europe is fat and lazy, spoiled by our bailing them out. Limbaugh [4/9/04]
Here's 75 more outrageous statements by the Oxycontin meets Viagra man:

From Rush's show Sept. 28:
Don't look for any retractions, by the way, not from the anti-war left, the anti-military drive-by media or the Arabic websites that spread Jesse MacBeth's lies about our troops, because the truth of the left is fiction, is what serves their purpose. They have to lie about such atrocities 'cause they can't find any that fit the template of the way they see the U.S. military.
In other words, for the American anti-war left, the greatest inconvenience they face is the truth.
Limbaugh-09/28/2007
Truth like WMD's, Rush? How about Abu Ghraib that Rush compared to a drunken frat party?
"This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You of heard of need to blow some steam off?" – Rush Limbaugh, on the torture at Abu Ghraib
And what Republican senator had to say about the scandal:
"The American public needs to understand, we're talking about rape and murder here. We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience; we're talking about rape and murder and some very serious charges." -- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on the torture at Abu Ghraib
And tell me Rush, was the atrocity at Mahmudiya fabricated by "phony liberals"?, more "fiction to "serve their purpose"?:
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., Feb 21 (Reuters) — A soldier broke down and wept at his court-martial here on Wednesday as he described how he and others had planned the rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, who was murdered along with her family.
Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, 24, was the second American soldier to plead guilty to raping the girl and killing her and her family in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad, in March 2006, then burning the bodies to cover up the crime.
The confession, which he read, described how he, Specialist James P. Barker and Steven D. Green, a private who was later discharged after a psychiatric evaluation, had planned the attack.
“While we were playing cards Barker and Green started talking about having sex with an Iraqi female. Barker and Green had already known ...” Sergeant Cortez said before breaking down. He bowed his head and remained silent, sniffling occasionally, for a full minute before continuing.
“Barker and Green had already known what, um, house they wanted to go to. They had been there before and knew only one male was in the house, and knew it would be an easy target,” he said.
The sergeant went on to describe how the men, before heading to the house, changed their clothes so they would not be recognized as American soldiers.
Once at the house, Private Green, the suspected ringleader, took the girl’s mother, father and 7-year-old sister into a bedroom, Sergeant Cortez said, while he and Specialist Barker took the teenager to the living room, where they took turns raping her.
“She kept squirming and trying to keep her legs closed and saying stuff in Arabic,” said Sergeant Cortez, who was flanked by his civilian and military lawyers.
He said that during the rape, “I hear five or six gunshots that came from the bedroom. After Barker was done, Green came out of the bedroom and said that he had killed them all, that all of them were dead,” Sergeant Cortez said.
(NY times)
Was this all made up by the "drive-by media", Rush? John D.? Jerry White?
I'm not implying that these events are the norm, but certainly there are enough atrocities in this war, any war, that one doesn't need to make them up. That's why we should only enter wars out of absolute necessity. Iraq was not.

Rush, and all, Democrats are told we are the party of tax and spend...well, Republicans are the party of spend and DEBT. We had a budget surplus when Clinton left office. If you folks (including Rush) want to continue supporting this war in Iraq, then PAY FOR IT! Asking you children, grandchildren, and probably great-grandchildren to pay for this war...is this an example of your family values? These war-mongers aren't sending their own children off to fight, get wounded, or die...it's so easy for an arm-chair "fighter" like Rush to rant...what sacrifice is he making???

"Any person in the military who speaks out against his duty, his commanders or anything that is part of his mission is a phony soldier.
A true soldier will do the job and never say boo."
Yes, the same justification the Nazi's used for their atrocities:
"Just following orders."
It frightens me to think the most powerful nation in the world also contains such a high percentage of stupid people.
"Ditto-heads"?
Whatever happened to the concept of thinking for one's self?
I guess if you can't think for yourself, you find a demagogue who'll do it for you.

Joe Ryan, you are amazing. did you write thhis by yourself? you are an example of what Hitler and Himmler would have said was the best Nazis soldier. i hope it is cozy in your cave. and you call yourself an American?
Just to set the record straight. I was unaware that Hitler and Himmler were big users of sarcasm and parody. And, I'm not American. I'm a commie from the republic of California. I don't live in a cave. I live in a mansion that has a moat surrounding it that is filled with goldfish. Keeps the liberal media and the Jehovah witnesses at bay.

Rush and Sean Hannity are the two that I trust to always be patriotic and always to have the interest of our country and in particular it's military at heart. He knows what he is talking about if you listen to his whole comment instead of out of context.
Did either serve in the Military? Let me get this right, I as a Military Veteran cannot comment on the mistakes for fear of being labled a traitor or phony soilder? Yet political hacks like Limpbaugh, and the great Patriot Hannity can slander those who have served? Sounds like Limbaugh, Hannity, and the hacks on the right have just as much interest to keep this war going as the other WAR PROFITEERS', Halliburton, Blackwater, The Carlyle Group, etal.

Obviously, the two schools of thought are: 1) ignore the criticism, 2) don't ignore it. What's hard to follow about that?

Let's get one thing straight: simply because someone was IN the service does NOT mean a) they performed at a high level (most are statistically average, as in most normal distributions) nor b) they were "heroes." There are support troops, there are combat troops, there are various communities of service. Everyone plays his or her part, to be sure, but there are combat troops who commit atrocities and there are support troops who work 22-hour days and who learn their trade and take care of their guys and are stand up when the time comes. My point is this: "serving" can mean wearing a uniform and having a good haircut and saluting smartly or it can mean patriotism and camaraderie in the face of extreme danger. If anyone has lived in the latter, he knows that those in the former are lesser, regardless of rank, prestige, pay, perks or peer accolades. So the question is not "phony soldiers" because of anti-war views, it's phony soldiers because they were not TESTED. If one was tested and then decides to oppose the war, so be it...but in my personal opinion, his opposition would be better served by acting from WITHIN. Become a legislator or work for one. Become a serious journalist, rather than a one or two time pundit, and investigate the situation you believe you understood as you examined it from the microcosm of your unit. Get off the air, and get off the agenda and get off feeding Dems and the GOP fodder for their vote-whoring. AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, GET OFF THE 24/7 media. They offer us nothing, including this site, and this post.

"Just what until Hillary moves back into the White house and brings her Moveon.org buddies with her..Then the whining on the Right may not be so simple.."
The above quote sums it up for me. The leftists believe that if they can just shut down the voices of opposition in this country (fairness doctrine) they will finally implement their Socialist utopia. The irony is they will never realize their socialist dream because their penchant for appeasment will open the door to Islam. And who do you figure the Mullahs will go after first?

Can someone please give me a link to where Rush said "Phoney Soldiers are ones that don't agree with him or the president"? You can't because he did not say that.
Read the ENTIRE transcript (not the snippets on MediaMatters, but the ENTIRE transcript) and you will clearly see that he was referring to people that lie about being in the service.

"May God have mercy on Rush Limbaugh and John Boehner."
He has Blessed them. No need for His mercy.

Many of you are too young to remember when like General Petraeus, General Westmorland testified to Congress on Viet Nam saying exactly the same things Petraeus has said. The only way we could have won in Viet Nam is kill every Asian (to include Chinese, Laotian, Vietnamese there was). Twenty years after Nam the Sect of Defense admits in his book admitted they knew we could not win but did not want to admit to it. That Westmorland wanted to use nukes at Khe sahn. The military cannot say what they want, proof being watch what every one of them have said since the Bush war and when they retire. Overnight they go from defending the war to admitting we can't win.
Almost every kill in Iraqi ends up being from a neighboring country. What are we going to do kill everyone? We are in hell of place we should never have gone there, Bush lied to Congress and us after we went along he points out we voted for the war, well that was because he lied to us. Have you noticed not one person has left the Bush administration without admitting it has lied and is screwed up? (OPPS besides Karl Rove). One last thing when you hear we freed the Iraqis from a dictator look at who the Bush State Department listed as the ten worse dictators and where Saddam ranked (Saudi Arabia was much higher as was Pakistan).
