President Bush clearly had a veto on his mind when he started talking about tax reform in friendly political territory today, stopping at a family-run business, The Jay Group, in Lancaster, Pa.

He was touting the Chryst family business, as he often does, as a model of people who benefit from the best of the federal tax code. They are organized as a subchapter S corporation, so they pay individual income taxes on their business earnings. Bush touts “S corporations’’ often.

But in Lancaster today, addressing a few hundred people, Bush said: “The principle is, is that tax cuts inspire investment, encourage consumption and savings. In other words, the more money you have, as opposed to the government having, the more likely it is the local economies will grow. That's why I brought up the example of the S-CHIP corporation.’’

S-CHIP is the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, the one which Congress wants to expand by about $35 billion over the next five years.

Bush had vetoed the S-CHIP bill this morning, before leaving Washington for his day on the road touting fiscal responsibility and tax reform.

He did get his cue straight at the start.

Thanking the Chryst family for welcoming him, the president had said, "Jay is the dad. He's expanded his business and he wisely turned it over to his daughter -- Dana. So I asked... I said, 'How are you organized, from a tax perspective?' Dana said, 'We're a subchapter S.’'’

Later, fielding questions from the invited audience, Bush slipped in recognizing a woman with a query:

"Yes, sir. Oh, I'm sorry, ma'am,'' the president said. "When you're getting over 60, sometimes your mind slips.''

According to "The American Conservative". There's at least $20 billion that has gone into Iraq that can't be accounted for. http://www.amconmag.com/2005/2005_10_24/cover.html

CBS puts the number at $50 billion, but what's a few dollars here or there.

That should more than cover the $7 billion needed for this program, plus a lot more.

Maybe if the President looked under his desk he'd find this money next to his WMDs.

dogjudge

That is not fair! That money was desperately needed to pay back campaign contributors!

Seriously, I've read a couple of things about this SCHIP bill. This whole "families up to 80K" thing is rubish. It's not true at all.

Of course the GOP will keep saying it is, but it isn't.

SChip corporations. lol. How sad. Why are these people allowed to reproduce?

George Dummy-U Bush!!!

"W" vetoing the bill to help American children in need sickens me. It saddens me to think that he is that cold hearted. How can you put a monetary value on a human life? Yet this joke of a president believes in pro-life and does not want stem cell research conducted. Well then I guess we should put an end to modern medical practices and leave everyone's life in the hands of fate aka God. Stop taking your blood pressure medicine, don't have CPR, and make doctors criminals for practicing their trade. Let's not spend a dime on the people of America but spend a few more billions on "the war" in Iraq. I am still trying to understand why our troops are there scarificing their life. Greed, oil, corruption? What is it that "W" wants out of this besides ending what daddy started? What is it??? My brother is in the army and will be back there doing is third tour of duty and he wonders the same thing. We're stuck in the middle of a civil war that has raged for generations and "W" wants to be in the history books as the "president" he lead use into it. If the Dems do not get things right the next elections I say, "Anarchy! End fascisim, stop the Republican movement!"

Snark about a verbal slip of the tongue. This from the reporter who just today couldn't even get the results correct on a poll he reported on.

Every day Mark Silva adds to his reputation for bias and inaccuracy.

Geez, what a fool.

You elected him once!
(Maybe)

"Snark about a verbal slip of the tongue."

Bruce, ya gotta be kidding me.

Everything this man GWB utters ends up in joke book.

It's not a one time isolated event.

To all of you that want to "help the children": do you think these middle class families should be given an additional allowance to feed these children, cloth these children, educate these children, pay for the electric and heating bills for these children...?

Where will it end?

I thought all you dems were so concerned about the deficit?

Don't gripe about Iraq spending because Iraq will not last for decaeds and it exepnditures will probably shrink over time. This entitlement will just get larger over time and consuume more our conutry's GDP.

My understanding was that the money for S-CHIP funding was to come from an increase in the cigarette tax.

Let this unfiltered Lucky Strike smoking GOPer thank YOU! Mr. President for "No NEW Taxes", a pledge that your predecessor, Bill Clinton, could not keep.

lack of health care needs affect us all, communicable disease knows no boundries and will attack rich and poor alike. if persons cannot afford to pay for health care. communicable disease that they might get will spread those who can afford health care. either way both groups are affected.
