After their big Beacon Theater fundraiser, Bill and Hill retired, with 100 -plus of their closest pals, for cocktails and thank-yous at the bordello-red Russian Tea Room on 57th Street in New York.
The gathering for the Clintons in the second-floor private dining room was more sober than the $1.5 million public event, however, with guests telling Newsday there was considerable fretting about Hillary's tough time ahead in Iowa.
Attendees celebrating the former first lady's 60h birthday included Billy Crystal, Ron "Opie" Howard, the campaign's financial godfather Alan Patricof -- and Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein, who left the party early with a leggy lady friend to order a bucket of Tea Room caviar -- to go.
There was also continued chatter about the fallout over the Norman Hsu scandal. Michael Lang, one of the creators of the '69 Woodstock festival, popped out of the party to shrug his shoulders over John McCain's jihad against Clinton's & Schumer's attempt to steer $1 million for an upstate museum honoring the festival.
Lang and other partygoers were still puzzling about Hsu, who allegedly bilked an investment group led by Lang's Woodstock co-creator Joel Rosenman out of $40 million.
"Where did all that money go? Where did it go?" he asked.
Glenn Thrush reports for Newsday, a Tribune Co. newspaper.

A fool and his money are soon parted? No honor among thieves? No I got it, to each according to his needs, from each his ability to pay. That fits the odious Hillary better.

Glenn and Rhonda, you almost snuck that one past us. What do I mean? QUOTE: guests telling Newsday there was considerable fretting about Hillary's tough time ahead in Iowa. ENDQUOTE.
Hmmm, the former First Lady's insiders are worried about Iowa? Heck to read or watch the national media and pundits, Hillary's already won and the inauguration is this coming January.
Perhaps Barack Obama and John Edwards -- along with the voters of Iowa are about to deliver a January case of "Hill Street Blues" to the Clintons.
Note to Messrs Lang and Rosenman: you'll find your cash in the same hidey-hole as the $9 billion that went "poof" in Iraq.

"bordello-red" is an appropriate room color for this event, and the as-yet unindicted people congregating there.

"bordello-red"?
I had to look and see if Glenn Thrush was a writer for Us or the Enquirer. Stick to trash novels, Glenn.

"John McCain's jihad against Clinton's & Schumer's attempt to steer $1 million for an upstate museum honoring the festival."
Jihad????
Senator Schumer wants to steer $1 million to his cronies via earmarks, while children lack health insurance. Where are his priorities?
