The John Edwards presidential campaign announced a few moments ago that it raised more than $7 million during the third quarter, indicating that its fundraising slowed during the summer.

But campaign officials said it has now raised more than $30 million in the first nine months of the year, which they said puts the campaign on track to meeting a goal of $40 million raised before the presidential primaries begin in January.

The campaign said it had about $12 million cash on hand. But the campaign has decided to accept public financing and projects it should receive $10 million more in matching funds.

Democratic rival Barack Obama disclosed that it had raised at least $20 million during the past three months, indicating its fundraising also had slowed during the summer months. More than $19 million of that total will be available for use during the primary, with the remainder available only the general election campiagn. His campaign did not disclose its cash balance or spending during the past three months.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has not yet disclosed her fundraising total. Campaign aides would not say whether she will do so today.

Gov. Bill Richardson reported that he had raised about $5.2 million during the past three months.
