Barack Obama began airing radio ads in South Carolina today featuring Chicago Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., son of the prominent civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
The senior Jackson won the South Carolina Democratic primary during his 1988 campaign for president, a victory the younger Jackson recalled in the ad, which is airing on gospel and R&B stations with a predominantly African-American audience.
“Once, South Carolina voted for my father, and sent a strong message to the nation,” the younger Jackson said. “Next year, you can send more than a message. You can launch a President.”
The advertising campaign comes a month after Jackson's father criticized Obama for "acting like he's white" because the Illinois senator did not speak more aggressively in the racially charged "Jena 6" case. The elder Jackson, who is supporting Obama, later said the remark was taken out of context.
African-Americans are a crucial demographic group in the South Carolina primary, a key early contest in the presidential nomination. They comprised about half the electorate in the Democratic presidential primary in 2004.
The younger Jackson lauded Obama for legislation he passed in the Illinois state senate combating racial profiling and for seeking to counter "the railroading of the poor in the justice system."
Though Jackson did not mention front-runner Hillary Clinton in the ad, he appeared to suggest Obama would better represent the interests of blacks.
"A lot of politicians call themselves our friends," Jackson said.
"But Obama has a heart that beats for our community. And he’s dedicated his life to the struggle," added Jackson, who cited Obama's work as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side and as an attorney working on voting rights cases.

thanks for the article, but the title of your article is a bit misleading and is contrary to the content of the article. "cuts ad" seems to evoke the idea of REMOVING (i.e. CUTTING) the ad. This is the opposite of what the article really means. the article should say "MAKES ADS"-- that would be more clear.

I don't care about Blacks having their own President; I care about a candidate who will represent ALL the people, Black, Hispanic, Jews, Christians.
I'm sick of guys like Jackson and Sharpton segregating candidates and will not vote for anyone where those guys are pulling their puppet strings like Obama.

That's it. Election's over. Jesse Jackson's endorsement of Obama seals it. Junior or senior, the name's the same and carries with it a certain cache'. (Please excuse the sarcasm).

Lori! Sit down, take a deep breath, count to 10. Obama is not a puppet to Sharpton or Jackson sr. They have been very lukewarm about Obama's candidacy. Sharpton may even support Hillary/Bill. So end that part of your argument. It is not about Blacks having their own president either. There is a long, unbroken string of White male presidents going back of George Washington who's job it was to represent all Americans. For a lot of years they did not represent all Americans, at least not equally. In real world America, with the speed of communication and the spread of knowledge underrepresented Americans have an means to be heard loud and long if their issues are not addressed. But what is important is that that long, unbroken string be broken, because America needs different face for at least 4 years to show that it is living up to it's ideals.

I agree please change the heading it is very misleading. They didn't teach you this in journalism school?

"The advertising campaign comes a month after Jackson's father criticized Obama for "acting like he's white" ..... The elder Jackson, who is supporting Obama, later said the remark was taken out of context."
This blurb is also inaccurate. Jackson Sr. was later quoted as saying he did not recall even making the remark, NOT that it was "taken out of context". He then re-iterated his support of Obama. This article doesn't state that. More misleading journalism.
Oh well, I guess we should be used to this kind of sloppy half-ass reporting, designed to mislead those who don't have the time to follow-up and find out the real truth. Seems to be the norm these days.
GO Obama '08!

To Lori & Bonita:
We are not looking for our OWN president; we are looking for the BEST candidate for the presidency who happens to be Barack Obama (a black man). Where was your sarcasm when these same black leaders supported white candidates? Is that in your minds only white people should have the audacity to run for the office of President of the United States of America? Where are your remarks for the black leaders who are supporting white candidates today? It's saddening that, here in the 21st Century, there are still people who demonstate bigotry in this age of enlightenment.

Jesse Jr is horrible as a Congressman. He is myopically focused on his little airport land scheme and does not serve his district. What has he accomplished in his decade-plus term? Nothing. The only thing he has done better than his successors is kept his pants zipped whne its appropriate.

I am not entitled to suggest, how South Carolinians ought to cast their votes in the Primary 08, however, as an Americans, I am entitled to this opinion:
You ought to see, like most Americans (across the races and ethnicities), that Sen. Obama is a more authentic Presidential candidate, and is someone Americans would be proud of, as the President, than Hillary Clinton.
Why is it so difficult to see that? Hillary Clinton ought to take a break, from seeking the presidency for several reasons:
First, two families -the Clinton and Bush families have ruled this country for the past 20 years. Bill Clinton was president for 8 years. Is it not time, we elected another president from another family, instead of the same family, yet again?
Secondly, South Carolinians should not forget, that Bill Clinton's policies were more harmful to African Americans than, the policies of any Republican president, ever! Clinton's "Mend it, don't end it" policy on Affirmative Action hurt millions of African Americans. Clinton's policy on Welfare Reform, hurt millions of African Americans (I know this for a fact, because, I worked on this program at the federal level). What makes African Americans think that, if Hillary Clinton were to be elected, things would be any different? She is a schemer, like her husband, who is now, her political mentor (they get the votes of black people for cheap).
For long, everyone takes the vote of African Americans for granted. Most of you, say, Sen. Obama has to earn your votes. I think he has, why do you not, then, give him his credit -your votes?. Make Hillary Clinton work as hard to earn your vote (do not just given her your votes). You have to be careful: she would promise African Americans, heaven and earth, moon and stars, just to get your votes. However, if she gets elected, she would sacrifice your interests and those promises she made. That was how her husband, Bill Clinton dealt with African Americans (do some research, or ask insiders in the Clinton administration, like, “water-boy”, George Stephanapolis). Her husband cheated African Americans, on the pledges he made, just to get your votes. What makes you think, he would not advise her to do the same, if elected?
Democratic presidents, except, President Lyndon B. Johnson, never kept promises to African Americans. They just use us and get our votes, and then sacrifice our interests and the promises they made to us. Ask yourselves, South Carolinians: between Hillary Clinton and Sen. Obama, who is more likely, to renege on their pledge and promise to your state, and who is more painfully aware of the challenges of poverty, and lack of access to education, employment and healthcare for South Carolinians?
For those of us, who worked for the Federal Government, implementing the policies of the Bill Clinton administration, we are painfully aware, how easily, that administration sacrificed the interests and issues of importance to African Americans, just to satisfy, the conservatives.
We as a people, ought to be smarter with our votes. Do not give away your votes. Ask Hillary Clinton: for her much touted “experience” to be president, which policies and programs did she work on, or contributed to, except for the disastrous healthcare reform?.
Americans, from all works of life, recall painfully, the dramas in the 8 years of the Clinton presidency, all, associated with Hillary Clinton -the "Right-wing conspiracy", the travel gate, the White-water land deal scandal, the Futures insider trading criminal investigation, the investigation into the suspicious death of a White House counsel, Vince Forster, the Oval Office File-gate, and the list goes on.
The public ought to look into all these. If Hillary Clinton has nothing to hide on these matters, the record should be made public. However, her husband, issued an Executive Order, sealing these files. Journalists cannot even, get into them. Is this the type of character you want in the White House.
It time, we, as a nation, turned a page, and elected an American, who can unite, rather than divide the nation. The same lousy old policies and the very same actors in the Clinton administration, except, Dick Morris, are campaigning for Hillary Clinton, wanting to come back. Tell them Americans have had enough of them, and wants to turn the page.
Hillary Clinton is in politics for her own personal interests and ambition, not yours. Nothing is wrong about these, if the candidate is candid with the voters. Take for example: every First Lady, since Abigail Adams, has championed public interests and causes to make our country better, beyond the boundaries of politics. Betty Ford: substance abuse treatment; Mrs. Johnson: beautifying our country, among many other causes; the present First Lady, Laura Bush: literacy awareness. What did Hillary Clinton do in the 8 years as First Lady, except to fend off one criminal investigation after another, and to fan the flame of partisan resentment and divide in our country. She is not a uniter, however, like her husband, she is not afraid to lie in your face, and claim that she is uniter. Do you want to see this character in the White House, as president?

Jesse Jackson saying Obama was acting white is insulting. It's like saying Abraham Lincoln was acting too black for not agreeing with the white radicals of that time.
