The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

From Super Bowl quarterback to political punchline — such is the fate that has befallen the Chicago Bears' Rex Grossman in the eyes of Iowa Democrats.

In a statement critical of the campaign spending by Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, the spokeswoman for the Iowa Democratic Party invoked the declining fortunes of the Bears' former starting QB.

Democratic spokeswoman Carrie Giddins said it was wrong for Romney to campaign on a theme of fiscal responsibilityand contended that the former Massachusetts governor's bid for the White House would be $8.4 million in debt without Romney plugging $17.5 million of his own money into the race.

Though federal campaign rules put a limit on individual donations, a candidate is free to inject as much money as they want into the race.

"Mitt Romney lecturing people on fiscal responsibility is like Rex Grossman coaching a quarterbacking class," Giddins said in a statement.

And the last time a football team from Des Moines went to the Super Bowl was when, exactly?

Maybe the Demo spokeswoman should learn something about football before
tooting her whistle. As Rick Pearson points out, Rex was one of only two
Super Bowl quarterbacks last year. And maybe he'd be doing better this year if he didn't have Joe Butterfingers at the ends,
no blockers in the offensive line, and a
running back who didn't go backwards. If her misguided analogy olds, Mitt Romney
will go to the Super Bowl of politics.

Waterboard Carrie Giddins and Rex Grossman!!!

So what if Romney is injecting his money? Didn't New Jersey's Jon Corzine spends tens of millions of his own dollars on Senate and governor races? Didn't Washington's Maria Cantwell spend millions of her own as well? What about Kerry mortgaging his home in 2004?
And while I am not a Rex Grossman fan, the Demoncrats jab at him was out of line.

Carrie Giddins is an idiot.

Mitt Romney is paying for his campaign with real money - rather than money borrowed from a source he would have to repay. Moreover, he is not purchansing more for his campaign than he can afford. How is that not practicing fiscal responsibility?

How much does he pay for his haircut? Oh thats right, it doesn't matter, he not a lawyer.

Ms. Giddens would seem to prefer the Hillary Clinton form of fund-raising, having Norman Hsu, Johnny Chung or some other China connection dumping in
gazillions of dollars from
mysterious sources, but placed in the names of dupes who don't even know what's going on. The question: What's the payback for China THIS time?

Shawon,

Go ask Haley Barbour - -he's been in hock to the Chinese for years ...

And for more money thatn either of the Clintons combined -- remember his forner job.

Bill R., during the whole John Edwards hair flap, and at the risk of BC foaming about suits again), Romney was asked about his haircuts and how much he pays. I believe Romney said around $100. Quite a bit less than $400 and the occasional $1,200 Edwards pays. But, hey, it's his money. If the Breck Girl wants to pay that, fine. Just don't tell us about "two Americas" when the hedge fund you partner in is throwing poor people out into the streets in New Orleans and NYC.
