CORALVILLE, Iowa – Sen. Barack Obama's campaign advisers were pressed into talking about the absence of a flag pin on his suit lapel for a second day, as they held a conference call with reporters this morning about a new campaign ad in Iowa.

"The senator understands that patriotism is hard work. You know, if you could do it by just putting a flag on your lapel, that would be pretty easy," retired Gen. Merrill McPeak, Air Force chief of staff during the first Gulf War and an Obama supporter who has been providing advice on national security, says in the new ad.

"It's hard work. It comes from the heart, not the clothing," McPeak, who is featured in the new ad. "I think the American people are wise enough to understand the difference between kind of petty symbolism and real substance, real courage, real judgment, which is what Barack brings to this ball game."

Campaign manager David Plouffe said he does not expect any damage to the campaign because of the dust-up over a flag lapel pin Obama has not worn for years.

"Voters in Iowa and elsewhere are very much focused on, you know, the key important issues that they are facing in their lives everyday," he said.

Plouffe said Obama shows his patriotism in more important ways.

"Barack spent a lot of his day yesterday in Iowa talking about how our country can better serve our veterans, and those men and women who are currently engaged in combat," he said.

The commercial stresses the themes that Obama has been highlighting in his tour of Iowa this week: the candidate's early opposition to the Iraq War and the foreign policy "judgment" that Obama argues that showed.

After the camera pans photos of McPeak in a flight suit and of McPeak together in uniform with the other military service chiefs, McPeak says, "Judgment is what we need from our next commander in chief."

McPeak reminds viewers that Obama opposed the war in Iraq from the start, "showing insight and courage others did not."

He then concludes: "The old Washington hands have let us down. We need a new leader to lift America."

The ad includes an image of Obama standing in front of what appears to be the White House. Plouffe said he did not know when the photo was taken, although the campaign is checking and we will update this item when we get an answer.

Asked if the new ad was started to counter the flag flap, Plouffe said no. "We had a new ad slated to start today," he said.

Is General McPeak a "Phony Soldier"?

Did McPeak suggest that he blurt out a suggestion to bomb Pakistan?

"insight and courage"?

When he was not a member of the US Senate and did not have a vote on the matter... and he was speaking to a friendly, antiwar crowd in a Blue state?

Wow. Let's carve his face on Mt. Rushmore!

Gen'l McPeak led the Air Force during one of the brightest times for the US military since WWII. His opinion should count. He is not, has never been and will never be a "Phony Soldier".

I think it is time for Prez Bush to counter this and bring in one of his old commanders from his days guarding Houston.

There must be so many to choose from!!!!!!

Ok John Kerry had men whose lives he saved do commercials for him. They said the words 'John Kerry saved my life'. Yet the draft dodger beat him. Obama's going to have to do better than this if he's the nominee.

I remember something about the Loons saying how the GOP always "uses the military as props".

The cynic in me says the retired General might be looking for a job in an Obama Administration (God help us if that comes to fruition).

Our troops agree on one thing: they want the war to end, NOW!
The fact that they are sending money to the two candidates (Barack Obama, Ron Paul) that have been saying that the longest is telling.

What happens when Bush takes Viagra? he gets taller.
~Robin Williams~

when are they going to bring out the quote during the 2004 election when obama was asked about his support for kerry despite his vote on the war, and obama said "were i in the senate at the time with the same information access, i probably would have made a different decision." or something like that. fact is, he flips like the rest of them. his holier-than-though crap is very annoying. like any person who thinks he should be president, he's got an ego and a desire to please.

This tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this country. The man's running for President of the United States and we are talking about the absence of a FLAG PIN??

Surreal.

Why not just give Obama a white flag pin?
It can become the "patriotic" symbol for him and the left wing base of the Democrat party.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 12:55 PM

Who do you think (Dem or Repub) is the best candidate running for President?

You know if he starts wearing a flag pin again they'll call him a flip flopper. Truly, how many politicians wear them anymore? You can't win for losing with this bunch of children.

Nah, nah, nee, nah, nah!
I'm rubber, you're glue...

This comment hits the nail on the head!!!

Thank god the media is adressing the critically important flag pin issue. Pinheads everywhere are expressing their outrage at Obama's pin-less lapel. In related news, president Bush has asked the Justice Department to write an opinion justifying torture for anyone not wearing an American flag pin.

On another blog I found this post:

The flag should not be worn as a pin anyway. Per the flag code:

"The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations. Flag lapel pins may also be worn."

If the clown obama can not wear a US Flag pin, then he does not deserve the vote from any veteran or current member of the armed services. Another phoney like kerry and hillary is!!

Hey moron,

I just did a google image search for all the candidates from both parties. I found pictures of all of them without a flag pin on. So I guess there will be no President from 2008-2012 based on your idiotic logic.

Math Whiz getting his political advice from Robin Williams. Maybe he can help with math skills.

Since we are still playing games with this flag pin silliness, I think the closet republicans should wear a nice brooch on their lapel.

Good heavens, how is this even a story? Who really cares anyway about someone's lapel pin?

MSM, I'm begging: PLEASE find something else to report.

This really goes to show how screwed up things have gotten in our country.

The media jumps on the fact that the man isn't wearing a US flag pin.

Outside of politicians, how many people do you personally know that wear a US flag pin daily?

We're slowly but surely going down the tubes.

First we get a double dose of "W", now this rubbish.

If it weren't so dog-gone cold up there I'd move up to Canada if they'd have me.

To the media - How many of you are wearing a US flag pin...daily?

An individuals’ actions speak much louder than any US flag pin being stuck in the suit each morning.

Right now, Obama's actions still speak much more clearly than most politicians US flag pins ever will.

Is that the best you've got, GOoPer Water Boy?
You need some new material.

"The Senator understands patriotism is hard work..."

God, it sounds like something Bush would say. Just tell the flag police to go fly a kite (or flag). Thanks, Comrade McCormick, for beating this story to death.

The reason the absence of a US flag lapel pin is a problem for Obama is that it resonates with who he seems to be--a typical Baby Boomer who identifies more with people who hold posters and chant anti military sneers at rallies than a guy who viscerally admires the military whose employees sacrifice their lives in the thousands so he and his pals can continue to go to rallies and look down upon soldiers as the desperate poor and his intellectual inferiors. Be honest: who does Obama remind you of most--Jimmy Carter whose response to the military invasion of Afghanistan was to boycott the Russian sponsored Olympics and to the Iranian hostage crisis by repeatedly asking nicely with sugar on top for their release---or Harry Truman?

I wonder what Democrat constituency Obama tried to appeal to by taking off his flag lapel pin.

Is it the 19% of Democrats who (in a recent poll) said they thought the world would be better off by the U.S. losing the war?

Or the 20% who didn't know or didn't say whether they wanted the U.S. to win the war.

But don't anyone dare question the patriotism of that 39% of Democrats....

You want to support our troops? How about paying for the war instead of foisting the debt off on our children?

How about a draft? We need a lot more soldiers to do the job, if we had them we wouldn't have to hire an army of mercenaries.

How about giving the troops a raise? There are military families who have to use food stamps. How is that right?

How about not sending US troops out to referee a civil war?

How about increasing the amount of home time troops receive after a tour of duty?

How about those people who vociferously support the war join the military and go fight the war?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

These Goopers think, "Support the troops," means putting a sticker on your car or wearing a lapel pin (ironically those pins and stickers are probably made in China.)

After 9/11 Bush should have called for sacrifice from the American people. He should have encouraged youngsters to join the military. But no, not Bush, Bush wanted us to go shopping.

Oh no...PLEASE not another fake flag flap issue! First it was flag burning, or more precisely, whether burning it was protected political free speech (The US S.Ct. said yes it was). Now, flag lapel pins...so, if Satan wore a flag lapel pin, you would vote for him? HEY--AMERICA, yes you...turn your friggin' BRAINS on please!!!

Bruce,

Who will you be voting for? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore
© John Prine

While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.

Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...

"But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
We're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more."

Math Whiz,

I'm "bidening" my material. You are getting closer.

I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT WHY OBAMA IS BEING ATTACKED ABOUT THIS FLAG PIN AND NONE OF THE OTHER CANDIDATES, DEMS OR REPUBS HAVE BEEN ATTACKED LIKE THIS!!! Is there clear bias and biogtry here? So WHAT he doesn't wear the flag pin! He doesn't want to, so so WHAT!!! I think Usama Bin Laden wore his American flag pin before 9-11 and he wears his American flag pin all the time now!!!!

Math Whiz,

I'm "bidening" my material. You are getting closer.

GOoPer Water Boy,

I've got better anti-Dem material than you clowns do, do you want me to send it to you through Mark S.?

I hate watching you guys (GOoPer's) taking such a beatdown everyday.....NOT! :o)

To all of the morons who think that wearing a flag pin makes you patriotic, compare what Jesus said about fasting. He said don't fast in public so that you can show off how holy you are to others. Same thing with the pin: you don't have to prove that you're patriotic by wearing a .99cents flag pin. Its what you do for your country that counts. Bush and his cohorts wear the pin...and screws the country and our troops by making them go on such long deployments that he is destroying them, their families and our military... while giving poor medical care to the returning soldiers, and withholding medical care from little children. And lets not even talk about what he has done to the constitution!!! Some patriot!! If you can be fooled by a .99-cent flag-wearing politician into believing that it makes him/her patriotic, you all deserve what you get... another Bush!

Obama needs to do himslef a favor and NEVER speak off the cuff. Every time he does he says something stupid. Only a Cook COunty pol could turn wearing the flag into a negative. As a former Marine I fly the flag at my house. Does that make me a fake patriot?

THis is what you call Damage control people. Obama knows he said something stupid so he promises this Genral a spot in his administration if he will say what Obama wants him to. If they were not worried about the flag flap this commercial would not be running. Obama just gave Hillary another couple points on her lead.

Vinny,

This non-issue has infuriated me so much that I finally donated to Obama today. Maybe you're theory isn't as solid as you think.

Posted by: Vinny | October 5, 2007 4:17 PM

Who do you think (Dem or Repub) is the best candidate running for President?

Senator Craig had his flag pin on in his mugshot, does this make him more patriotic?

This dust up only proves the old adage;

'The last refuge of the scoundrel is patriotism.'

Only a Cook COunty pol could turn wearing the flag into a negative. As a former Marine I fly the flag at my house. Does that make me a fake patriot?

Vinny for a Marine you sure are a crybaby!

Fun to watch the left wingers blame Republicans for Obama's shame. But who was it who kicked him first? HILLARY! Read her comments. I'm an ABC (anyone but Clinton) person, but I have never seen a candidate so self-destructive as Obama.
Better that we learn now than later. And don't even think of him as a VP candidate with Hillary. She doesn't need him; look for Jim Webb to be the choice: a Southerner and a veteran. Obama is toast and all of his own making and immaturity.

I'll bet if Obama ever goes to an Arab country, his wife will put on a head scarf. Democrats always seem to be very sensitive to Arab sensibilities. Unfortunately, they do not have the same respect for AMERICAN sensibilities.

Be honest: who does Obama remind you of most--Jimmy Carter whose response to the military invasion of Afghanistan was to boycott the Russian sponsored Olympics and to the Iranian hostage crisis by repeatedly asking nicely with sugar on top for their release---or Harry Truman?

Posted by: The Shadow | October 5, 2007 2:18 PM

You should go back into the Shadows with this kind of logic. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we supply the Mujahadin in Afghanistan. Didn't the Russians get they're a%s handed to them in a costly bloody demoralizing war. That Carter sure got it wrong didn't he. Idiot!

'The last refuge of the scoundrel is patriotism.'

Posted by: C.Morris | October 5, 2007 5:10 PM

....and God.

You know, we spent some silly money on those stupid "Support Our Troops" car magnets. Then we had the gall to worry about postage when Missi's dad asked for a standard lumber saw, so he could help build things at camp while he was deployed. We NEVER should have gotten our priorities so backwards.

Forget the flag pin, where does Obama stand on arugula??? Enquiring minds want to know. Which is more patriotic, pro-arugula or anti-arugula???

The cynic in me says the retired General might be looking for a job in an Obama Administration (God help us if that comes to fruition).

A) There is no God, so there's nobody to help us.
B) Couldn't be any worse than the mess chimpy mcflightsuit got us into already. WORST PRESIDENT EVER.

I have flown a flag from my porch for 40 years.
Has Obama ever flown a flag in front of his home?
4th of July?
Your right, a pin doesn't make one patriotic, but what you did befor the pin flap, will.

A) There is no God, so there's nobody to help us.

Real Democrats don't really need groveling flip floppers anymore. Concern trolls can crawl back to their big Repug. buddies. See ya.

Whats so wrong with the first lady recognizing a local custom?

Posted by: Gary | October 5, 2007 10:23 PM

What would be wrong with Obama recognizing OUR customs?

Barack Obama wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons, has stayed opposed to the war all these years, has a pro-active vision for American foreign policy, an innovative domestic agenda, the thoughtfulness and intellect we need in a presidential candidate, and most importantly, the candor to speak with the American people openly and tell us the truth.

Flag pins and an ill-recieved joke about crop diversity in Iowa mean his campaign is "gaffe-prone".

Hillary voted against diplomacy, voted for war in Iraq (and recently for war in Iran), wants to continue the Bush model of diplomacy, wants to re-create California's wildly unsuccesful mandatory insurance scheme to try to cover the uninsured, believes that lobbyists serve the greater good, is willing to use a nuclear weapon in order to kill one or two people, and equivocates on the use of torture.

FLAWLESS!

Republicans seem to wallow in symbolisms and swell with pride as they spew meaningless slogans - all the while being shallow on substance. They are real religious folks who are quick to point fingers at others, call names and moralize about stuff like "family values"...just like the Sadducees that Jesus condemned for their self-righteousness.

As a former republican myself I now prefer the Democrats who show their patriotism (and true Godliness!)by looking out for the poor and "the least of these, my brethren". Self-righteous, flag-pin-wearing, slogan-spewing Republicans divide America ... anyone who disagrees with them is unpatriotic. They really are the God Opposing Party (GOP). Wolves in sheep's clothing pretending to be godly and patriotic, that's what they are. Jesus prayed in the garden and asked the Father to protect us from them, so the rest of us will be OK in the end...

Wiener, somebody called you an idiot... gee, I wonder why?

Sherm,

There's nothing wrong with Obama recognizing a local custom, that doesnt mean he has to follow every custom? Are you going be critical of all persons in politics that dont wear a pin? Or will be selective in your criticism, just like you speculated that Michelle Obama would wear a headscarf, and then ignore that Laura Bush has done the same?

Come on Sherm! Why does Laura Bush hate America??
