IOWA CITY –Sen. Barack Obama charged today that a private security firm operating in Iraq has acted "with reckless disregard to Iraqi life," as he called his proposals to better monitor such contractors the toughest reforms offered by any candidate in the presidential race.
Although Obama has previously mentioned Blackwater USA, the Illinois Democrat drew greater attention to the firm's actions in an extended discussion on the University of Iowa's campus.
"Most contractors act as if the law doesn't apply to them," he said. "Under my plan, if contractors break the law, they will be prosecuted."
In announcing his "Security Contractor Accountability Plan," Obama said he would like to see greater transparency on contractor hiring and costs.
"I've proposed tougher government reforms than any other candidate in this race – reforms that would eliminate the kind of no-bid contracts that this administration has given to Blackwater," he said.
A new congressional report suggested Blackwater employees engaged in nearly 200 shootings in Iraq since 2005, with a vast majority cases being shootings from moving vehicles.
Obama said he would create an entire FBI unit that would be charged with investigating such incidents.
"Given the attention these scandals have generated we can no longer plead ignorance," Obama said.

Come on Replicans, aren't you going to defend your supporters over at Blackwater against Obama's attack?
Tell us how proud you are of these mercenary thugs.

...they're too busy defending Rush Limbaugh right now to deal with this...

A replican is a bird, isn't it?
And who cares about Mr Fluff and the easy shots he takes anyway? He's irrelevant.

Do Merc's get out of hand at times? Yep. Do we want these Merc's on our side. You betcha!! I had hopes for Obama, but he is coming out clueless. Before any of you come out on this, if you haven't been in a war zone, don't comment. Something you don't realize is civilians are a lot safer around these experienced Merc's than around Army troops who have little or no experience.

How would Barack Hussein Obama know? He probably has never been shot at? Obama is a phoney anyway you look at him.
When you work for a company that has had other employees hung from a bridge you'd shot first...

Now let's see all the Republicans around here who have do harshly gone after Murtha and Move-on respond to your statement that the volunteer soldiers serving our nation are inferior to maid mercenary thugs who sometimes "get out of hand".
Get out of hand. 11 dead civilians in one incident. No big deal, right?

I'm sure many people in Iraq feel the same way. Blackwater is throwing the ROEs out the window.

He's just pandering to the left. Let the investigation conclude before you make these comments Obama. Tomorrow, he'll be in the paper attacking Rush Limbaugh..How many of you are getting tired of this crap? It works both ways. There are no true differences between Republicans and Democrats. At least when they get to Washington. We all (Americans not politicians) want the same things, we just have a different way of getting there. But our political system is in a real mess, nothing of importance gets done because everyone wants to get the credit and no one wants to take the blame.

To bad none of these blackwater guys didn't shoot the innocent families of the people supporting them. I wonder if DCB OR Bud had somebody killed in there family from these blackwater guys would they still be making these stupid remarks.

If my company had employees hung from a bridge, I'd think twice about what the company was doing, and decide that it probably wasn't worth the task. It doesn't matter how much profit is involved. It is just not worth it. Breach the contract and give the money back to the American people, or just give it back to Condoleeza and Ken Starr (who I think are investors in blackwater).
How can one look at oneself in the mirror, 5 million dollars richer, knowing that the "gain" costed the lives of employees and Iraqi civilians?

Hello Anonymous. How many were actually civilians? Why were they around people who they knew were going to attack the convoy? While most of our service people are doing their best, unfortunately for them, they aren't trained very well. Also, no, you have never been in a combat zone. Here is a question for you or anyone else. How many of our troops have been killed by friendly fire??
Posted by: DCB | October 3, 2007 5:20 PM
Shoot first and ask questions later. Why do Dems always support all other countries and terrorist groups before they support Americans. I know why they simply hate the USA. You Dems can reply to this but I know the Truth.

When is Congress going to let Americans, in a war, defend themselves. I am sick of fighting, for the past 60 years with handcuffs on. Further, I believe those of you condemming the Iraq situation do not see a difference between Blackwater and the US Army. The Micky Mouse ROE's (rules of engagement) cripple the forces...Don't shoot until you're fired upon. Don't torure people who are going to kill innocent Americans. The critics of our might continue to strengthen the resolve of our enemy. Obama is finally proving himself as nothing more than "eye cnady" for starving liberals. As Americans, we need to recognize that this country was founded on Christian principles, we are tolerant and respect other religions but the majority of the country believes in and trusts Jesus Christ. We communicate written and vebally in english. There is no law against other communication but I do not want my tax dollars paying for people who chose to be here but do not want to learn the language. My grandparents, all 4 of them, had to overcome nuch more difficult issues as they came through Ellis Island legally. There was no free food, free health care, amnesty of any other provisions that are so affluent today. I am neither Republican or Democrat. I am just looking for the right person (man, woman, black or white) to put America, not americans, first. Start looking for the best answers for the country and the speacial groups will all have to adjust.

Stewart, very true. It's called distraction and seperate and destroy. We are being destroyed by our own political parties. For whom??

"Something you don't realize is civilians are a lot safer around these experienced Merc's than around Army troops who have little or no experience."
So there's the dead civilians and then the safer dead civilians, and it's better to be the latter? What goes on in side the wingnut mind? And why do you hate our troops?
Of course the legislation Obama is proposing would be totally unnecessary had not Paul "I've got MY Medal of Freedom" Bremer not signed a giant get out of jail free card in the form of Order 17 indemnifying Blackwater and their ilk from any prosecution . . . on his last day in office.

Is that the same Obama who's down 33% (53%-20%) to Hillary Clinton in the latest ABC/Wash Post poll?
No wonder Obama's revving up the pander machine. Not even Democrats are buying his message.

I didn't think somebody would come here and defend mercenaries... takes all kinds to make a world, I guess.

"As Americans, we need to recognize that this country was founded on Christian principles, we are tolerant and respect other religions but the majority of the country believes in and trusts Jesus Christ. We communicate written and vebally in english."
Well great.... Christ taught specifically to love our enemies. That pretty much wraps ups the debate.
Christ didn't speak English either... but did favor foreigners (Samartians for example)

" How many were actually civilians? Why were they around people who they knew were going to attack the convoy?"
Yep, standing on a street corner is a death penalty offense alright. The nerve of those people being on the streets in their own capital city. Who do they think they are?
Blackwater is such a great example of american style justice for the new democracy in Iraq. I'm so glad we can teach them these touching lessons. It sure makes the war worth it.

I used to pull for Obama but he just gets more ridiculous every day. Now he's just tedious. Even when
a candidate is desparate, he's not supposed to show it. Ever hear of statesmanship? These Blackwater guys
have done an exemplary job of defending their protectees, including members of Congress. And this is how people like Obama repay them. What a country.

"OBAMA THESE BLACKWATER EX CIA GUYS DON'T PLAY, THEY DON'T RECALL, THEY ARE GETTING PAID"
These guys went from making 200,000 to 1 billion dollars since BIG POPPY has taken office. I don't think there are too many blacks or African Americans in Blackwater. I think they are for hunting only.
SO LETS PUSH THOSE BUTTONS BUT WE CAN WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU ARE VICE PRESIDENT. THEN YOU CAN PUT THEM OUT TO PASTEUR WITH CONDI!

How can any good American, who loves our private contractor heros, object to letting them have a little 'quality trigger time' for $120k per year?
Posted by: Anonymous | October 3, 2007 7:14 PM
Anonymous, Have you ever been in a crowd and you noticed something was going on and that it was time to leave? No? That's because unless you have experience, you won't notice things. I'm not knocking you for not being in combat, but you have to understand that after you have, you start noticing these "little" things. Now, get away from your computer and your TV and stop being spoon fed. Go out into the world and try not to get mugged. From the sounds of it, it will take you awhile to learn how not to.

My sentiments exactly. I'm not defending Blackwater, but I doubt all the facts are in at this point. Obama jumped the gun a bit. No pun intended.

By leave do you mean shoot every Person in sight and then run away without bothering to find out what really happened?
Lives are precious DCB. Not just American lives, Iraqi lives too. This isn't a video game.

As a former Marine I find it funny that Obama is acting this way. I have never been in combat, but I am sure most of these Blackwater guys are former military. Unless you are under the pressure that a soldier is under how dare you condemn them for the job that they do. DO you think that they just woke up and said you know what I feel like I am going to kill 20 people today. When fearing for your life in a foreign land, protecting people, and knowing that your colleuges have had their heads cut off, you might react the same way. Lets not attack the people that attacked Blackwater 1st, but lets attack those who responded. Yeah that makes sense. What is happening to my country? We shouldn't be in Iraq, but that is not a soldiers fault. LET THEM DO THEIR JOB!!! Barrack, have you any military experience to speak of? That is what I thought.

Obama is a clueless NEW politician. The man hasn’t even finished one term in his political career and now he’s trying to gain Democrat brownie points.
Let’s get the facts straight. Blackwater USA employs the most professional and highly trained and experienced Security Contractors. They operate as if they were still in Active Duty Military. The hold the highest respect for this country and the people that live in this country.
Blackwater has more than twice as many contractors on the ground in Iraq conducting much more sophisticated convoys, protecting higher ranked officials, then DynCorp and Triple Canopy. When you weigh the situations and complexity of each situation Blackwater always comes out on top. When President Bush, Tony Blair, Dick Cheney, Condolezza Rice, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld and so many other high ranking officials visited Iraq, who was part of their Convoy? Blackwater! Why? Because they are the best at what they do!
Don’t get me wrong Blackwater has a few HOT HEADS, just has every military unit does. People make mistakes, innocent people die. That is part of the calculated risk in these situations.
Obama is too much of a newbie to understand the big picture. Next he will talk about immediate troop withdrawal. To the naïve people that don’t understand why we are still there in Iraq, we are there to prevent invasions from Syria and Iran. An immediate withdrawal will leave Iraq vulnerable.
Truthfully, there is only 1 person who could run for President that could take us out of this situation gracefully. That person would be Colin Powell, it’s a shame he isn’t running for President.

Ive heard Blackwaters CEO say that he/Blackwater would embrace oversight. Why is that? Probably because they have nothing to disclose, no wrong doing and all that the oversight will prove is that there are issues pertaining to contractor accountability, but that its not Blackwater. Do you really believe a federal law enforcement agency such as Diplomatic Security, Dept of State, would tarnish their reputation. NO... I suspect Blackwater will get more business after other like companies get shut down. Becareful what you wish for - you may just get MORE Blackwater.

A Few Degrees of Separation From Hillary Clinton's Top Adviser
By Jeffrey H. Birnbaum
Tuesday, February 20, 2007;
Mark J. Penn is a man who wears many hats: high-paid political and corporate pollster, chief executive of an international communications and lobbying company, and chief strategist to New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Enough connections for you?
Well, there are more. Penn's firm, Burson-Marsteller Worldwide -- with 2,000 employees and $300 million a year in revenue -- owns BKSH & Associates, the major lobbying firm chaired by Charles R. Black Jr. That's right, Black, counselor to Republican presidents, reports to Clinton's top strategist.
The connections get even more entangled. Burson-Marsteller is a subsidiary of WPP Group, a London-based advertising and PR giant that owns many of the biggest names on K Street. These include Quinn Gillespie & Associates, Wexler & Walker Public Policy Associates, Timmons & Co., Ogilvy Government Relations Worldwide (formerly the Federalist Group), Public Strategies Inc., Dewey Square Group and Hill & Knowlton.
To be more precise, Penn's parent company employs as lobbyists and advisers an ex-chairman of the Republican National Committee (Edward W. Gillespie), a former House GOP leader (Robert S. Walker), a top GOP fundraiser (Wayne L. Berman), and the former media adviser to President Bush (Mark McKinnon).
etc etc etc
Barack Obama is tired of the lies that the republicans are pulling on the american people. He stands with support of many true americans who like myself are vietnam veterans.

Who has trained all these blackwater employees? U.S military i presume, so dosnt this ammount to a brain drain on the US military? no wonder they are inexperienced if blackwater lures away all the best trained personel with high salaries. Also isnt protecting senators/seretarys of state the job of the military??? why is the state paying a company to do a job the military can do for 1/4 of the cost??? the people who make these decisions are the same people who set up, invested in and paid for companies like blackwater, haliburton etc
