So that was a real moment of brain fade experienced by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney who today accused Sen. Barack Obama instead of Osama bin Ladin of trying to rally jihadists in Iraq.

This is how the Associated Press reports the story.

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) — In a slip of the tongue, Republican Mitt Romney accused Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama of urging terrorists to congregate in Iraq.

In the midst of criticizing Obama and other Democrats on foreign and economic policy Tuesday, the GOP presidential hopeful said:

"Actually, just look at what Osam — Barack Obama — said just yesterday. Barack Obama, calling on radicals, jihadists of all different types, to come together in Iraq. That is the battlefield. ... It's almost as if the Democratic contenders for president are living in fantasyland. Their idea for jihad is to retreat, and their idea for the economy is to also retreat. And in my view, both efforts are wrongheaded."

Romney apparently was referring to an audiotape aired Monday in which a speaker believed to be terrorist Osama bin Laden called for insurgents in Iraq to unite and avoid divisions. The authenticity of the tape aired on Al-Jazeera television could not be immediately confirmed.

Romney also said: "It's my personal belief that having someone like John Edwards, a senator, who goes out and communicates that there is no global war on terror — that it's just a Bush bumper sticker — I think that is a position that is not consistent with the facts."

Romney was addressing a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Spokesman Kevin Madden said: "He misspoke. He was referring to the audiotape of Osama bin Laden and misspoke. It was just a mix-up."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "Apparently, Mitt Romney can switch names just as casually as he switches positions, but what's wrongheaded is continuing a misguided war in Iraq that has left America less safe."

Ouch. Very smart smackdown by the Obama aide.

Mr. Romney should apologize. I don't believe it was an error. I have used a great deal of Power Point and seems like a convient slip of the tongue to me.

SFT:

Being a Republican means never having to say you're sorry.

Did his spokesman apologize? Nope.

Will he? Probably not.

Notice how he did start with the correct name and then changed it. And followed it with the ENTIRE name! A top presidential candidate can't even keep straight the name of the most infamous terrorist this country faces (that is, besides ourselves)?

Willard Romney is a first class *#^!$#.

The Republicant's can only get excited about something when they can come together on something or someone they can all HATE, it's the same reason 24% of the Republic Party still believe that Saddam was responsible for 9/11.

What a nimrod. And he wants to be president. Come to think of it, that's what we've had for the last seven years, so I guess he is qualified.

Mitt Romney's mispronounciation of Senator Obama is a stupid, juvenile act if done intentionally and a mentally lazy and careless act if done accidentally. Which quality would the American people prefer in a leader?

Oh, it's no accident - Fox has been doing the same thing for several months. Trying to confuse Obama/Osama in people's minds. This will get them (in theory) some freebie votes from smooth-brained folks that vote on reflex. "Osama Bad! Obama Bad!"

I don't think this was a slip of tongue. He probably thinks he is being funny... trying to appeal to the braindead republicans that still support Bush (john D and Bruce for example.)

The sad thing is it will probably work.

If Mitt Romney can't tell the difference between a US Senator and a wealthy Saudi Arabian terrorist, he is not qualified enough or intelligent enough for the office of President. If he did it intentionally, he does not have enough integrity or guts to hold that office. Either way, he should step out of the race and stop embarassing himself, the Republicans and the United States of America.

This is why you can't trust the Republic Party to fight the war on Al-Qaeda. They think Democrats flew planes into buildings and don't mind if Bin Laden and pals have sleepovers in the mountains of Pakistan while Musharraf signs truces with tribal leaders.

Fox News and CNN have done it in the past. Just think who all would be doing it if Senator Obama were actually doing well in the polls? There is no end to Republican hate. And by the way, had a Democrat called a Republican bin Laden, cable news and the mainstream media would cover it nonstop for weeks, screaming for an apology. Let's see how much coverage this gets.

Me thinks he is getting desperate.

Note that the reporter didn't mention that Ted Kennedy also called Obama "Osama" in a speech. Must be a Massachusetts thing. We're still waiting for Ted to apologize...but then again, he's never apologized for Chapaquiddik either. I suspect that Obama, like most of us, would quickly say that he's been called worse in his life.

Romney knows exatly what he did, it is serious, and NOT funny, and he should publicly apologize to Senator Obama!

Re:Willard. "You've seen one Republican CEO President, you've seen them all"---Ronald Reagan's ghost.

Well, Osama and Obama are similar names, but Usama bin Laden and Barack Obama are not. Hardly slip of the tongue material.

So just what is Field Marshall Mitt Rommel playing at, anyway?

Oh Oh! Sorry, my mistake. Didn't mean to imply Willard was the top Nazi general of WWII.

Did you ignorant hypocritical lefties and did the lapdog media whine and make a fuss when that drunk and killer Ted Kennedy kept referring to Barack Obama as Osama a year or so ago? Hmmmm?

"Romney ALL BLACKS LOOK ALIKE" ALL MEN WITH WOOLY HAIR ARE BLACK" I MEAN, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, OBAMA / OSAMA"

It was intentional and he should apologize and or be censored. If Osama is who Osama is said to be, then no one should be called Osama.

Last check, Bush read SEE SPOT RUN, SEE AMERICA RUN to the 2nd graders on 9/11, no Obama, he running because on August 6th, Bush didn't tell the Senate or CONGRESS OF ANYTHING IMMINENT EXCEPT HIM AND HIS ADMINSTRATION plus one NEWLY DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY and it's PHONY ACHIEVEMENTS.

IT'S ALL GOOD THOUGH, Obama knows he's the man, and Mitt Romney is still trying to figure out his religion and why he missed out on five wives and then some.

The repiglicans have been running on a "smear and fear" campaign for so long, it's all they know how to do. These one trick ponies are due for a lesson, and it started in 2006 and will continue in 2008. Pretty soon, all they'll have left is Bill Orally, Mann Coulter, and the drug addict.

'Who cut the cheese!? (Ha ha ha!!)'

There is nothing that Romney says or does that isn't calculated and rehearsed. Obviously, this supposed slip of the tongue was on purpose. An apology is in order.

Mitty and Rudy Julieannie are flipfloping jokes.
Both of these Wingnut slugs would actually make Hillary look better than she could have ever dreamed of doing by herself.

Here's Rudy telling everyone that he's not really a Republican...in 1996...when he was mayor of NYC:

Do you think Grand Wizard, OOPS, I mean Mitt Willard will apologize?

Stay tuned.

Lil Johnny Dancing Queen,

Chapaquiddik happened nearly forty years ago, get over it.
Go get yourself a fruity drink with an umbrella in it and shut up.

Wrong, JohnD. Kennedy did not see BARACK Obama. Kennedy's jumble of names actually started with Osama Bin Laden and then tripped himself up.

I think there's a big difference from the names Osama Bin Laden and Barack Obama. But hey, I'm sure you enjoyed an opportunity to bash Kennedy and call some names.

...and of course, Grand Wizard Rommel is former Nazi general and head of the KKK.

Its an old Right Wing trick: Subliminal Suggestion. (WOW! I feel like that guy on FOX TV exposing magician tricks!)

Sean Hannitty does it all the time with his "I may be wrong but wasnt Obama arrested for drug abuse? [Subscribe to the Chicago Tribune] Im probably wrong so forget it" tactics. Even Michael Savage pulls his "There are 1 billion Muslims on this planet. Even if only 1% are out to get the US, that makes over 100 million terrorists. 100 MILLION!!!!" schtick.

While I feel a moral quandary with subliminal suggestion, [Chicago Tribune, Worlds Greatest Newspaper] I recognize that it has been around for over 40 years and is an accepted stragety of Public Relations.
[Relax with the Chicago Tribune tonite]

"I may be wrong but ,,,"

Smirky,

Yeah, a real good rhetorical device. Almost as good as GWB's 'Some say, blah blah blah...'

Who the hell are 'some', Dubbya?

Trust. This was no accident.

Mitt's just trying to grab a headline by attacking a democrat. Meaning once again pandering to the nutty GOP base and they're bully mentality.

Romney is either slightly retarded or using a malicious tactic.

Maybe both.

In any case, he isn't fit to hold high office.

But that didn't stop Bush and Cheney, did it?

The Republicans love to denigrate Obama because of his name. I agree--this was no "accident." Romney is the slimiest of the Republicans running. He's shown this by flipflopping from his record as a moderate in Massachusetts to being a radical rightwinger in this primary season. I've never seen such a sorry bunch of candidates as the GOP field this year and Romney stands out as the worst.

Romney must be channeling Paulo to make such an obvious mistake. Republics have to keep smearing Obama's name to keep the sheep scared and in line for next year's elections.

Is Romney still in third grade? I don't know about you, but I've had enough of presidents who function at a grade school level.

Mitt Willard Romney

OR

SS Mitler Wizard Rommel!
