Rep. Stark apologizes for sharp anti-Bush remark: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Matthew Hay Brown

Rep. Pete Stark would like now to remove himself from the debates on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and the war in Iraq.

Pete%20Stark%20small

Last week, as the House was debating the SCHIP veto override attempt, the California Democrat said that opponents of the legislation were sending Americans to Iraq "to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement."

Then, as Repulicans demanded he retract the charge, Stark clarified that while he had "nothing but respect for our brave men and women in uniform," he respected "neither the commander-in-chief who keeps them in harm’s way nor the chickenhawks in Congress who vote to deny children health care."

With those comments threatening to spoil Democratic plans for a public relations victory in the SCHIP debate, the 18-term congressman faced growing pressure over the weekend from colleagues as well as critics to apologize.

"What Congresman Stark said during the debate was inappropriate and distracted from the seriousness of the subject at hand – providing health care for America’s children," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

Stark, 75, returned to the House floor this morning and asked to be recognized.

"I want to apologize to, first of all, my colleagues, many of whom I’ve offended; the president, his family, to the troops … and I do apologize," the 18-term congressman said. "I think that we have a serious issue before us – the issue of providing medical care for children, the issue of what we do about a war that we’re divided about how to end.

"I hope that with this apology I will become as insignificant as I should be and that we can return to the issues that do divide us but that we can resolve in a better fashion."

Stark’s voice broke as he yielded back the balance of his time; the mostly empty chamber broke out in applause.

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, who said he called Stark over the weekend, said the apology was appropriate: "He didn’t sugar-coat it."

Among those joining in the House applause was Minority Leader John A. Boehner, who moments earlier had seen his attempt to censure Stark fail.

Boehner had introduced a privileged resolution that called Stark’s conduct "despicable" and charged him with using "personally abusive language toward the President and Members of the House" that "dishonored himself and brought discredit to the House."

The House voted to table the measure – but that doesn’t mean the GOP is done with Stark. As House Democrats were meeting today to sharpen their message, the National Republican Congressional Committee chimed in with a list of suggestions for their rivals. Item No. 5: "Stop Pete Stark from speaking. Seriously."

Why is he apologizing? Republicans never apologize, he should learn from them. Did the GOP apologize to that scum bag Clinton for the Arkansa Project, the ridiculous Whitewater investigation or the Vince Foster smears? No, they said outlandish things and stood behind them proudly. Did anyone from the GOP apologize for outing Valerie Plame? No, they didn't.

He shouldn't have apologized, it implies that he was wrong, which he wasn't. There is no valid reason to be in Iraq. Everyone agrees that the only solution is a political one and that the Iraqi Government is totally unwilling to do what is necessary. So why are we still there? For Bush's amusement, straight up, nothing else makes sense.

The Republic Party operates at it's finest when they can get their robot followers to find something they can all HATE together:

This is exactly why you hear the GOoPer candidates for President talking about Hillary all the time while ignoring the fact that it has been their very own George W Bush and Dick Cheney (not Hillary) who have spent the last 6+ years screwing up everything they've touched.

I hope America doesn't fall for this crap again, especially Rudy's crap.
Rudy Gigoloiani is just as if not more dangerous than Bush/Cheney has been, just look at his main supporters (big oil money from Texas, Neocons) it's these same Neoclowns who gave us the Decider Guy and his pal Chainsaw Dick Cheney in 2000:

Stark mouths off, apologizes and basically admits he is an insignificant idiot, then starts bawling. He must be the pride of the Democratic Party.

I personally love it when the more moderate Democrats smack down an off-the-charts Moveon.org liberal like Stark. They know the marriage of convenience with the far left is helpful in bashing Bush, but also know that while the far left’s rhetoric may play well in San Francisco, the Swamp and possibly Cuba, it does not play well with mainstream America.

There is no doubt in my mind that Stark meant every word he said when he attacked Bush, and only apologized because the Democratic leadership refused to stand by him. If my assumption is correct, that makes Stark not only a fool, but one who lacks the courage of his convictions. Moderate Democrats use Moveon.org liberals like dogs. When the Moveon rhetoric is to their advantage, they tell them to sic. When it is not, they put the muzzle on and send a whimpering puppy like Stark back to his cage in San Francisco. That is, until they need him again, at which time he will obediently start barking again.

nisleib,

I thought it was so Bush could enrich his oil and defense contractor buddies. At least, that's what we've heard for the last four years. Is that no longer true? Now that, too, "no longer makes sense?" Now it's just for s**ts and giggles?

I think if they had they're way the would silence all dissent.

I think this is a win-win situation for the Dems. Stark gets his views on record, then apologizes so the 'Thugs can't use it against him.

Rep Stark shouldn't apologize, what he said is true, if the chickenhawk Wingnuts had their college Republican kids getting drafted for all these wars that Bush/Cheney are starting it would end immeadiatly because they wouldn't put up with it

....and (R) John Boehner is the LAST person who should be asking for an apology from anyone on the war after he said this:

Herbie-

It's too bad the moderate Republicans never smack down the Bob Jones/Pat Roberston wing of their party for their idiot rantings.

I guess the difference is that while the democrats may have Move-on on a leash like you suggest, It's the Bob Jones and Pat Roberton group that has the Republican Party on a leash.

Watching Romney sucking up to the Bob Jones idiots for an endorsement has been truly disgusting.

JB - Bush is amused when he funnels money to his contributors.

Oh No! Since he had the spine to say these things on the floor I had sincerely hoped that he would not apologize.

Does anyone remember the White House Correspondents' Dinner in March 2004 when President Bush joked about not finding WMDs in Iraq?

He showed pictures of him searching for WMDs in his office. I mean, it was pretty darn cute of him. But really folks...
Starks comments were justified. He was making a rhetorical point.
It is not likely that Bush sits around all day laughing to himself about not finding WMDs in Iraq. That would be rediculous.
I don't think many people would interpret what Stark said that way, and would instead see the metaphor- the forest for the trees.

often chick·en·hawk (chĭk'ən-hôk') Informal A person who favors military force or action to carry out a foreign policy but has never served in the military.

The truth does not constitute "personally abusive language". We've all seen Dubya cackle about the war, so who could doubt his amusement?

Stark's comments were completely relevant and appropriate to the gravity of the SCHIP debate because we could have actually funded universal health care with the trillions we've spent in Iraq.

My question is why won't Nancy Pelosi impeach the chickenhawk for his repeated abuse of Presidential power and violations of the U.S. constitution? What exactly is holding you back Madame Speaker?

Herb Alpert,

Go stick your head back in the sand with the other 24% of the rightwing lunitic fringe.

Rep Stark spoke the truth and nothing will get you in trouble faster in Washington than doing this.

WE need more people like him in our Govt.

Too bad the "clever" Senator Reid wasn't the man that this Congressman is. Everybody says crazy things in the heat of the moment. He sounded sincere. We should let it rest.

Pete Stark (Raving Mad) called a female House member a whore -- and got a pass from the feminists. He called a male House member a little fruitcake -- and got a pass from gay group. He called HUD secretary a disgrace to his race -- and got a pass from civil rights groups. Looks like he finally ran out of free passes.

Good friggen grief. What kind of a site is this. It sure is aptly named! You people are the ones we often here about that live in a parallel universe!

Another honest comment about Bush and their asking him to say he is sorry. Will we ever have freedom of speech or is that in the works for another war toward freedom, they found the loop hole in freedom.

herbie H, you got it. right on the head. the beautiful thing to watch will be how the dems destroy themselves next year. ripping apart with the moveons taking them left of mcgovern and complete destruction, as the grown ups (hillary) attempt to keep THEM on the reservation while appearing sane to the vast majority of americans. it wont be possible of course. and the kooks will be brushed aside. as they have been thru-out all the iraq votes etc. the cirtical mass will be when those kooks finally see how immaterial they are to the political process. and how they are being used by the hillary wing of their party. the old grown ups. if the kids for some reason can generate a coup, that would be the best of all worlds. the dems could be relegated for a decade to the proverbial kiddy table in the kitchen of politics throwing mashed potatoes at the walls, as they do now, but not harming anyone, like our childrens futures. personally, i am contributing to all the kook causes/groups as much as possible so they can achieve this coup, and commit political suicide. self immolation. but god its fun to watch. i think the over/under of this scism is june 08. once iraq is going too well to be ignored by the MSM. the economy thru the 2nd qtr and real estate not having the effect the MSM hopes it has. no recession. the kooks are going to be fit to be tied, with all the good news. and about that time, they'll figure out george bush isnt on the ballot.......

With the Stark comments (stark is the German word for "strong", BTW) crawling textwise across the foot of the screen, the video should be Bush, to the uproarious laughter of the Whitehouse press corps, looking under the desk for WMDs

i wrote to Stark - i've been riding NY trains safely for six years - that is no accident - President Bush rest assured the people took care of this ingrate.

I am so saddened. I am wondering how long it is going to take for the U.N. to come to the conclusion that they will have to impose sanctions upon the U.S.A. for it's blatant disreguard for the blood-of-the-lowly-ones worldwide, even for those inside its own borders. I am not looking forward to the severity of those sanctions. Can you imagine? Not to be allowed to import a thing! Aren't our food-farms dependant upon foreign oil, also? How are we even going to eat? Have water shipped to us? How is Wally-mart going to be able to stay in business? Think about it. How dependant is your job/company upon import-this and import-that? All the suffering we will have to go uthrough, just because "bullies" rule from this nation, and in this nation. I am not looking forward at all toward those impending sanctions.

Stark...Ha,Ha,Ha crying on the House floor!!!

Old saying "be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in gear". Next time your gonna say something really stupid, please call me first. At least you apologized.

Sorry, Mr. fred, but actually that provides an apt description of your post. You must have slept through the grade that taught sentence construction. Nice vocabulary, though I failed to read your point.

Starks abusive remark is typical of someone with no conscience. But what would one expect from an athiest?

His speech seemed somewhat slurred. I guess it could be age. No matter, it takes a lot of courage to say the things he said. I don't really care where he found it.I just wish more of them could find some. Not courageous here, btw. If I were him, I'd be scared for myself and my family right now.

--> Boehner had introduced a privileged resolution that called Stark’s conduct "despicable" and charged him with using "personally abusive language toward the President and Members of the House" that "dishonored himself and brought discredit to the House."

It's such a sad day when the GOP and spineless DEMs denies an elected official the right to free speech with their demands for an apology.

A true statement should NEVER be changed or redacted.

Pete Stark for house speaker!

Right on Pete! Tell it like it is.

Of course Stark was angry. If those so quick to condemn him now had listened to him BEFORE the vote giving Bush the power to invade Iraq, we wouldn't be where we are today. I suggest you re-read it now.

Delivered on 10 October 2002 on the floor of the House by Pete Stark, U.S. Representative for the state of California.

Sounds like the cut and run crowd have a new champion in Petey boy...maybe he can move to France with General nancy

Too bad.

Another 'truth shouter' tossed under the bus. No one is more at risk in America than some fool that shouts out the truth in our theater of the absurd.

Goodbye Mr. Stark.

Every time I hear something about Steny Hoyer, I find more to dislike about Steny Hoyer. A big self-assured atta-boy for Democratic cowardice. This is why we lose. Stark was speaking loud and clear FOR our troops. This donkey leadership is impervious to winning-spirit and are so easily cowed. Leadership? Not so much. Fire them! Kucinich for speaker!

Justice Denied commented on Dubya's "cackle". Please, sir, desist!
Hillary has formally adopted "cackle" as her personal, signature laugh!

From what I'm reading by many of the posters here, they are just as kooky and twisted as Stark.

George Bush and Dick Cheney are honobale men who had serious reason to believe that Saddam Hussein trained terrorists, harbored them and subsidized their families, that he had his gunners trying to kill American airmen who were where they had a right to be doing what they had a right to do, that he lied to the UN, and that he had the capability to provide significant amounts of chemical and biological materials to people motivated to use them against us in our urban areas.

They didn't handle the aftermath of the fall of Saddam well, but that doesn't justify vilifying them by the little minds at work here.

WHY???... He is a KILLER!!!

Maybe he apologized because, ahem,...he was sorry?

Rep. Stark seemed to be the only one there with the guts to state what most Americans are thinking. The time to hold back is over. Civility just gave Bush/Cheney more power. I thought Stark's words were refreshing in that they did not sound to come from a Stepford politician. Pelosi should not criticize--as she is a weak Speaker-- in continuing to fund this no-return-black-hole of an occupation/war. She is such a Bush Lite, and has not done what the majority of voters in America wanted her, and the House, to do when we voted for them. I'm very disappointed in Pelosi. Is Cindy Sheehan getting any traction?

Boehner is a Bush lapdog... Ohio leads the nation in home foreclosures, also, the big NASA contract that should have gone to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland--gosh, that contract went to TEXAS. Bush has done so much to set Texas up economically. The Bush administration has totally screwed Ohio, and, Ohio Boehner--cry baby in the senate Boehner--pants and drools as he walks behind Bush. Also, "problems" with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections (Blackwell-Sec'y of State) may have "helped" Bush in office last time. To whom is Boehner loyal--Ohioans, or Mr. Go-To-War-On-A-Lie-Of-16-Words? Time for Ohio to vote Boehner out of office (Senate) and look for the real patriots--like Stark (House).

"BOEHNER SPEAKS" MORE CROG, MORE CROG" I MEAN MORE BURBON IN MY DRINK PLEASE.

GIVE ME A BREAK, A REAL MAN STOOD UP AND CALLED IT LIKE IT IS. THEN BIG POPPY WAKES UP THE NEXT MORNING AND ASK CONGRESS, NOT AMERICA FOR ANOTHER 46 BILLION DOLLARS SO HE CAN MOVE BLACKWATER TO CALIFORNIA, ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO AND TEXAS BORDERS.

IF HE ASKED FOR 46 BILLION DOLLARS TO IMPLEMENT BLACKWATER INTO OUR NAVY, MARINES, AIR FORCE, AND ARMY I WOULD GO FOR THAT.
BUT 46 BILLION DOLLARS TO GIVE TO HALLIBURTON TO FINISH THE DUBAI HALLIBURTON TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD.

OH YEA, WE CAN'T FORGET THE BILLIONS NEEDED TO CONTINUE TO ENSLAVE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO BUILD OUR LITTLE TEE PEE IN BAGHDAD AKA AMERICAN EMBASSY THAT WONT LAST A WEEK WHEN WE LEAVE.

OH YEA, CONDI NEEDS ANOTHER 1.5 BILLION TO SQUANDER AT THE LOCAL DUBAI SHOE STORES.

JOKE!

So let me get this straight you two have a superiority complex. Still you feel the need to take time out of your better than the average Swamp poster day to let the world know "You people are the ones we often here about that live in a parallel universe!"

Analysis may be in the cards for both of you. No comment on the Stark issue, just a blanket inditement of The Swamp and the people who take the time to express they're opinion on the issues of the day.

Speaking of which I don't think Rep Stark should have apologized for his comment. Could he have worded it better perhaps, but the truth of the matter is that Mr Bush is a reckless, egomaniacal, chickenhawk dirtbag!!!

The suppression of free speech under the Bush regime should scare every American. Those that support it are even more frightening.

Oh Stark is just another Loony Lefty going unhinged, just as the loony lefties went unhinged on Committed Lefty Bill Maher's show. Once again, the loony left shows without a doubt they are the worst mankind has to offer.

I am truly surprised by the comments on this site. I was working in Africa for the past three years, and I just returned to the grand ol' American political debate only to be shocked by both sides. It could be my failing memory, but I do not recall seeing the unflinching and unthinking invective towards the President when I was last in this country.

I too have NO idea why Stark apologized, and find it just sickening how content this Democratic Congress has been to remain complicit in this administration's crimes.

Mr. Stark's comments were 100% correct, appropriate AND patriotic. Anyone who saw our "president" yuck it up about how we hadn't found WMDs in Iraq knows just how seriously he takes the deaths of nearly 4,000 of our service members over there. Oh yeah, and the over 650,000 innocent Iraqis who have died for his and the neocon chickenhawks' deliberate falsehoods.

And how on earth was this anything but EMINENTLY respectful toward our misused troops in Iraq? Someone explain this bizarre suspension of reason to me. It seems that any time the Republicans hear something too close to the truth, they start jumping up and down and crying "you insulted the troops!" Then the Democrats collapse in a puddle of submissive contrition and apologize for being born, having eyes and brains.

Steny Hoyer is SUCH a pathetic weenie. This was not Pelosi's finest hour either. Grow some spine, Democrats. Your country is impatiently waiting.

sheila said:

"Starks abusive remark is typical of someone with no conscience. But what would one expect from an athiest?"

Pretty strange moral values you have there. He insulted a man that 76% of America agrees is an unfortunate disgrace, and most of the world considers a war criminal. But if he had called himself a Christian and started a war that killed nearly 700,000 people based on exagerations and lies in order to enrich his corporate cronies, you'd find him virtuous, I'm guessing.

Again, very strange moral values some of you folks on the "right" seem to have.

All you hystericals moaning about free speech being suppressed need to get a grip.

No one's right to free speech has been threatened or even challenged! The fact that you blowhards can get on here and say the things you do about our President and VP is proof of that.

Stark may have felt pressured to make an apology, but he wasn't forced, thrown in jail, killed, tortured or punished by the Government in any way for his remarks. His OWN party pressured him in order to further their own agenda. Pressure is not supression.

Grow up.

Wow! Do I ever live in a different universe than most of the posters at this site! Before you have a chance to castigate me for feeling "superior", let me disabuse you. I cannot compare myself to you. I do not personally know anyone as filled with hate as you all sound. Pete Stark has gone around the bend, and the bad part is that I wonder if much of America hasn't gone with him. The world, not just the U.S., behaves and talks as though they are affected by some chemical whereby they are unable to control hate speech. Hate speech. Hate speech. Yes, I said hate speech, speech intended to intimidate, to frighten, to shut others up. When people cannot engage in civil discourse, civilization is gone, and hate is a good substitution for anger. It is simple, the left hates George Bush because he is our President - no other reason. They hate us Republicans because we disagree with them - no other reason. When did all of you on the left stop being liberals to become stalinists? I may be wrong, but it sounds as though you demand free speech while doing your best to shut us conservatives up. News flash - IT WON'T HAPPEN.

"the left hates George Bush because he is our President - no other reason."

No Kathy, not just because he is out President, but he is our President and he has started an un-necessary war, he has botched said war, he has failed to uphold the Constitution of the United States as he swore to, he has condoned the use of torture and he has done tremendous damage to the United States that will take decades to undo.

News flash Kathy- we will NOT stop criticizing this President since his actions deserve criticism from every citizen, including you.

AJF said, "No Kathy, not just because he is out President, but he is our President and he has started an un-necessary war, he has botched said war, he has failed to uphold the Constitution of the United States as he swore to, he has condoned the use of torture and he has done tremendous damage to the United States that will take decades to undo."

OF COURSE it was an unnecessary war! We could have just allowed the terrorist countries and free-lancers dictate to us, we could have just ignored intelligence reports, we could have allowed the same thing that happened to the Jews in Nazi Germany, but we (not President Bush, but we) decided to go to war - for a higher reason. I hope that one day you will understand what humanity is all about. Pete
Stark wouldn't recognize honor or decency if it bit him. Neither could half of the U.S. Senate.

Kathy-

You are truly out of touch with reality if you think this war has any resemblance to World War 2 or what happened to the Jews in Gemany.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died because of our chosen war. We have tortured people. Is that what humanity is all about to you?

It could be my failing memory, but I do not recall seeing the unflinching and unthinking invective towards the President when I was last in this country.

AJF, think for yourself and stop being the water carrier for those who have a lot to gain for themselves by turning non-thinkers against the war. One poster mentioned those of us in fly-over country not agreeing with most of the posters here. Trust me, he is right. Yes, there are some opposed to the war, but are not hateful about it. The vast majority hate war, but realize wars are sometimes necessary. No one goes easily into war, and to think President Bush did is crazy to the outermost limit.
As to the insane claim that we have tortured people, that's a ridiculous claim, no matter which democrat "leader" spouts it (Jack Murtha?). Our U.S. military does not torture, and I have not read of any stories that in my wildest nightmares could I call torture, not by U.S. soldiers! Standing in uncomfortable positions? Child's play by terrorists' measure. Water-boarding? Not torture in war. Torture is an act that when viewed by the average person is reacted to with revulsion, cringing, chills. I am totally in favor of coercion by any means short of actual torture, if the object is to get information about crazies planning to kill innocent Americans. Also, AJf, I challenge your use of the term "Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died because of our chosen war." Firstly, we didn't kill them so this means the terrorists killed them. Secondly, I don't believe that claim, though we have given them the freedom from Saddam Hussein's malignant torture and death. Do I call what the U.S had done in Iraq humane? YES! Thanks to our brave troops and such a leader as President George Bush.

You beat me to it. Its simply amazing how many Republicans have "failing memories." Maybe you guys should respectfully bow out of historical analysis until you can get that memory checked.

No president was demonized more than President Clinton, and his presidency was significantly more effective and MODERATE than this one. Bush is a failure (9/11, failure to catch Bin Laden, Iraq War, exploding debt, rising poverty, immigration, etc.) and he will be treated as such until the day he leaves office.

Ol' Pete is a senile old man who should retire to the old folks home.

You know AJF.

Think for yourself. We're not hateful. War is necessary. We don't torture, it is not torture, but I support torture. We didn't kill them the terrorists did. I don't belive it. We saved them. Bush is great.

Kathy- you really need to read more. We have torured. To death. Here's an example:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/02/AR2005080201941_pf.html

Or this one:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/20/international/asia/20abuse.html?pagewanted=print

If that treatment doesn't make you react with revulsion, cringing, chills then there is something very wrong with you.

"Secondly, I don't believe that claim, though we have given them the freedom from Saddam Hussein's malignant torture and death."
Yeah, and we replaced them with Balckwater thugs who kill Iraqi civilians without provocation.

You don't believe it? Why not? Does looking at the facts upset you too much?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/01/us/01deathsbox.html

Is the Iraqi Health minister lying, Kathy?

Take your head out of the sand and look at what's really going on. This is not a bloodless crusade in Iraq Kathy. Americans can do bad things, not just people in other countries, and your hero George W. Bush is one of them.

This is not fortney's first case of hoof in mouth desease. Read over the comments praising him for them. Must be something in the water.

AJF, if the only sources you have for gaining your world knowledge are the Washington Post and the New York Times, then you are sadly, almost criminally misinformed. When the truth isn't bad enough, those slugs just make up lies. And their regular readers are gullible enough to believe it because they never read a reasoned and thought-out article.

Kathy you are in deep deep denial.

Try getting your news from a source other than Fox. You might be surprised what's really going on in the world.

But in this case even Fox admits it happened:

AJF, I visited the link you posted, Fox News. All I saw was raw data, no proof of anything whatsoever. Well, I suppose the person died, but I don't know (nor do you) what happened that caused his death. Are you advocating conviction prior to trial. Or should we just quit having trials?

Geographically Challenged Dumb Dumb Little Johnnie D, "the Joseph Stalin of Streamwood", at least the people you insult don't move whole cities from the east coast of the USA to the west coast, or move the island of Cuba a few hundred mile to the west of its real location.

To all of the kool aide drinkers in this audience.

This is exactly why I moved from the state of MD. The liberal loons have taken over and you have lost your collective minds.

In true you are "with us or against us" fashion of the right...don't let the door hit you on your way out.

Kathy-

The trial has already been held. Verdict: Guilty of negligent homicide.

Please note Warrant Officer Welshofer testified that the technigues used were approved by his superiors.

So Kathy, do you still stnad by your position that we never torture? Or has your humanity worn thin enough that it doesn't bother you?

Kathy,

You sound like a true "ugly American". Let me see - you are probably a "devout" Christian, living in the sticks whose only friends are all white and who has never travelled outside of the U.S. (Just guessing) You think white Americans are superior and justifies torturing anyone who is of another race, religion or ethnic persuasion because you are not just an American, but a white American. Sounds kind of fascist to me. You would have done well in Hitler's Germany

"Justice Denied commented on Dubya's "cackle". Please, sir, desist!
Hillary has formally adopted "cackle" as her personal, signature laugh!" - L J Rupp

I suppose you are right about Dubya, although he is a chickenhawk, his ignoramous frat boy beavis grunting is not exactly a cackle.

I am neither a "sir" nor a Clinton supporter at this point in the race, but I do believe Hilary's laugh is more shrewd than shrill and thus not a cackle either. Examine your inner misogyny.

My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building."

- Ann Coulter, New York Observer, 08-26-02

"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many, what day it's gonna happen? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

- Barbara Bush, said on 'Good Morning America' the day before the Iraq war started, New York Times, 01-13-03

"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus - living fossils - so we will never forget what these people stood for."

- Rush Limbaugh, Denver Post, 12-29-95

"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual gay sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything. All of those things are antithetical to a healthy, stable, traditional family and that's sort of where we are in today's world, unfortunately. It all comes from, I would argue, the right to privacy that doesn't exist, in my opinion, in the United States Constitution."

- Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Associated Press, 04-22-03
Can't wait to here the apologies for these!
