Mel Martinez, the Republican senator from Florida who first arrived in the United States alone as a boy in the “Pedro Pan’’ airlift of refugee children from Cuba, has pressed the Hispanic-American community to support Republican candidates and his party before and during his service as national party general chairman.
But Martinez, facing competing demands of serving in the Senate and serving his party, stepped down today after less than a year in the post. That leaves Mike Duncan, who already had been named chairman in a dual role with the more public persona of the general chairman, to run the party’s operations heading into a critical national election year.
“Since my election as general chairman of the Republican Party, we have accomplished remarkable things,’’ Martinez said today. “We have out-raised the DNC every fundraising filing period this year, leaving us with a six-to-one cash-on-hand advantage. We have worked hard to articulate the party’s core values on vital national issues ranging from funding our troops to winning the war on terror to the promotion of fiscally conservative policies.
“It was my goal as general chairman to lead the party as it established the structure and raised the resources necessary to support our presidential candidate and ensure Republican victories next November,’’ he said. “I believe we have accomplished those goals. That’s why it is the appropriate time for me to step down as general chairman and continue to focus my energy on serving my constituents in Florida.’’
President Bush, who personally benefited from Martinez’s campaigning both in Florida and other quarters of the country, said today that “when Mel accepted the position as general chairman of the Republican National Committee, his goal was to ensure our party had the structure and resources in place for all Republican candidates in the 2008 elections to be successful. He has more than fulfilled that mission.’’
Bush also issued a resounding endorsement for Duncan, a Kentuckian who will remain in place as chairman of the party.
“Our party has effectively laid the groundwork for the 2008 Republican presidential nominee thanks in large part to Senator Martinez’s efforts,’’ Duncan said. “I commend Sen. Martinez’s relentless commitment to his constituents in Florida, and I look forward to continuing to work together for our party in the future.”

The Republicans have out raised the Democrats with a six to one cash advantage?
I would like to know where that number is coming from.
Every thing that I've read has the Republicans scrambling for money, nearly going broke, etc.
So where is this number coming from?

The Republican Strategy in 2008: Fear monger immigration to distract from Iraq, and Bush's other failures.
Martinez had to go as a result. It's tough to make americans fear their hispanic neighbors when you have a hispanic out in front of your group. He had to be shoved back into a dark corner to make room for the scapegoating and demogoguery.

6 out of 7 threads about Republicans today?? No wonder Brucey is not around - he can't complain about how The Swamp panders to the Democrats.

Does anyone know when this so-called "Pedro Pan" airlift occurred?
Posted by: BobinATL | October 19, 2007 2:28 PM
JT, your analytical prowess is pretty hilarious. Here is a Newsflash to you JT, most Democratic voters are not in favor of illegal immigration, want secure borders, etc. Are those Democrats "fear mongers" too?

JohnD-
Are they fear mongers? To the extent that they overinflate the issue to distract from other bigger issues, you bet they are.
Your hispanic neighbors aren't the enemy.

Johnny D,
You just don't get it. Who is in favor illegality? The difference you don't grasp and JT does is Democrats realize it is not realistice to deport an estimated 12 million people. Republicans on the other hand have to satisfy their racist and xenophobic urges by attacking Hispanics.

"The Republican Strategy in 2008: Fear monger immigration to distract from Iraq, and Bush's other failures."
That's the grey squirrel calling the black squirrel dark. Fearmongering is what democrats do best. From republican's starving your children, to SO MANY deaths in Iraq, to the earth being destroyed in 10 years due to man made global warming ... the liberals have a solid grasp on fear mongering.
I believe Mr Martinez's demise is a direct result of the republican, and particularly Mr Martinez's support of the ill-conceived immigation (amnesty) bill that voters overwhelmingly objected to. While the Dems daily beat the drum of american troop deaths in Iraq, 25 innocent americans per day are being slaughtered in the streets of america by illegal aliens. That is over 9000 deaths a year folks. That doesn't even count the rapes, robberies and assaults by people who break the law daily by being here. I say we adopt Mexican immigration law, starting with making illegal entry a felony.

Mel is "facing competing demands of serving in the Senate and serving his party"? You call this political reporting? Mel is facing the bigot base of the Republican party, who despise his tolerance for the Spanish language, immigration, Puerto Rico, even for Harriet Miers. Oh and Mel was one of those "trial lawyers," kind of like Hamilton and Lincoln. Republicans are suffering the fate they richly deserve.

"While the Dems daily beat the drum of american troop deaths in Iraq, 25 innocent americans per day are being slaughtered in the streets of america by illegal aliens."
Please provide documentary support for this inflamatory allegation. According to the FBI there were a total of 14,990 murders in the United States in 2006. You have just claimed that lllegal immigrants are responsible for 9,125 of them or 60%.
This is exactly the kind of demogoguery I'm refering to. The level of fear has been jacked up to paranoid levels. Ignorant people are led to believe the most incredible "facts".
Posted by: JT | October 19, 2007 4:28 PM
I didn't say murder ... I said deaths. Just 12 per day are murdered. That's 4300 a year. Still more murders a year than all american deaths in Iraq, but do we see body counts in our newspapers like the troop deaths?
"But the carnage wrought by illegal alien murderers represents only a fraction of the pool of blood spilled by American citizens as a result of an open border and un-enforced immigration laws.
While King reports 12 Americans are murdered daily by illegal aliens, he says 13 are killed by drunk illegal alien drivers – for another annual death toll of 4,745. That's 23,725 since Sept. 11, 2001."

There are hundreds of reports on illegal crime and criminals if you look for them. Heaven forbid our media will ever report the facts of the cost of illegal immigration. Here is one more
"In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens."

K W Smith-
From your own article:
"Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research. "
"While no one – in or out of government – tracks all U.S. accidents caused by illegal aliens, the statistical and anecdotal evidence suggests many of last year's 42,636 road deaths involved illegal aliens."
and then from the article it links to:
"While no government agencies specifically track crimes by illegal aliens, there have been some efforts to quantify the loss. Last December, Mac Johnson set out to investigate the number of homicides perpetrated by illegal aliens. Since the federal government would not provide any useful information, he contacted all 50 statehouses. Three months later, he had fewer than a dozen responses. Only one state, Vermont, provided any useful information.
He then set out to statistically estimate the number of murders by illegal aliens based on available crime data and conservative estimates of the actually number of illegal aliens in the country – which, of course, nobody really knows."
So this guy has estinmated a number based on the fact that he admittedly has no useful data.
Wow. Impressive facts there.
Not even Conservatives buy that report.

Steve King is exactly what I'm talking about, made up "facts" from a Republican scaring the voters. Spread all over the internet to be ppicked up by the ignorant and easily scared. And you've fallen for it like a good sheep, KW.

What now? Another Chad contest?

The FBI, federal and state prisons and police departments refuse to release data on illegal crime. Why not? What are they hiding? Just a few of the high profile crime involving illegals tell the story. Repeat illegal felons released on low bail to rape and murder again, not even identified to authorities as illegal. I think 25 american deaths a day at the hands of illegals is probably conservative. How many skip back across the border before they are arrested? To ignore the growing evidence, despite our uncooperative law enforcement, is dangerously oatrich-like. The people rose up and squashed the betrayal by our representatives in Washington with the amnesty bill. To say this is just conservatives is deceitful... and quite consistant with liberal propaganda.

KW Smith-
I think that illegal immigrants save 75 lives a day through CPR and helping little old ladies cross the street.
What proof do I have? None. Just like you.
Thank You KW, for proving my point about what Republicans like Steve King are doing. You've shown it better than I could ever have explained it.

Perhaps I should have framed it more like Dan Blather or Al Gore. You can't prove me wrong, so It must be true; and I have a consensus, so stop being an ignorant, illegal catastrophy denier. Surely you can't argue with these venerable Democrat conclusions.

Thank goodness they got rid of that idiot Mel Martinez.
He was pushing a straight Neo Con, middle of the road Dem agenda; amnesty for illegals.
Rather than lose votes, I bet the GOP has a net gain of votes by not debating on Spanish TV and by upholding the American tradition of the rule of law.
There is very little support for these anti rule of law amnesty anarachy supporters. In NY, the Gov. is getting his fingers slapped with his plan to issue driver's llcenses.
This 20 year plus Dem who has walked presincts, phone banked and raised funds will be voting Repub this time around if the candidate is for strict enforcement inluding deportation of all illegals. And I am not alone among Dems.
Mel told Rudy and Mitt to tone it down on illegal immigration. That was a mistake, thoujgh both of them seem to be for amnesty with seal borders.
Mel pushed the amnesty agenda. They knew it was a loser. The polls said only 24 % of Americans agreed with it. On a subpoint in the plan, a majority agreed; they spun that in all the press to say the majority of Americans agreed with amnesty. Pure Bush style iles. They tried to ram it through without going through committee because they knew no one but dishonest business wanted it. They deserved what they got.
DIP (Democratic Illegal Party, formerly known as the Democratic Party) being solidly in the illegal camp may run into major problems with its normal sujpporters.
Unions have asked pointed questions about NAFTA from Hilliary who said, well jobs have been lost (they have) they coudl revist NAFTA once she is elected. Translation: I will look at it and say overall it it benefital so tough luck but don't want to say so before the election.
Illegals are hitting the working class really hard on the job front and the wage depression front. Yes DIP has raised the minimum wage, but that does not help if the illegal has the job is working under minimum wage.
And all middle class moms with kids are fed up with the decline in the schools, with is aided by overcrowding, migratory students who don't come prepared, non English speaking students, etc.
There is a huge opening for the Repubs if the are at least moderate on Iraq, tough on illegals and that means deportation, and fiscally conservative, no more borrow and spend, while not forcing their peculiar religious beliefs down others throats.
And the Hispanic vote? Polls show 1/2 of American Hispanics are anti illegal immigration and amnesty.

Sure it is realistic to deport between 20-36 million, the new estimate of the number of foreign criminals (illegal aliens) here.
S. Carolina and AZ and CO and OK have proved it. You pass a law making it really hard for the criminal illegal to get work, take away all benefits you can, enforce your laws, and they self deport.
In these states the laws haven't even gone into effect, and the criminals are already packing up and leaving.
Sure, not every single one will go. The violent crminals, gangs and drug dealers will resist and will have to be hunted down and arrested, prosecuted and deported, but that is pretty much it.
If necessary our military could do house to house sweeps. Unfortunately, they have lots of experience with that now.
Don't forget Pres.Eisenhower with 700 men in 4 months deported 1.5 million Mexicans. But then, that was an era when politicans were not kissing dishonest busineses ass for PAC money.
And who is this joker who seems to think if you are pro Ameican, pro rule of law, pro legal immigrant, including pro legal Hipsanic immigrants, that somehow you "fear" your hispanic neighbors?
What a total bunch of nonsense. But I have a suspicion that the racist La RAZA/MECLa (motto: Everything for our race, nothing for others) has been indoctrinating its storm troops with all sorts of silly ideas, ie:
1. Illegal Aliens have a "right" to amnesty and citizenship. Actually they have a right to a pre deporation hearing with the right to an attorney. That is about it.
2. Illegal Aliens are not illegal. Wrong. 8 USC 1325
3. Illegals are not criminals. Wrong. 8 USC 1325, taking a job illegally, driving without a license, id theft, failure file and pay taxes etc.
4. Illegals are important to the USA economy. Wrong. They are a net drain on the economy and are subsidized (after all their value is added in) to the tune of 22,000 per year per illegal. Remeber all their days without illegals? Not even a bleep on the radar screen of the USA economy.
5. Americans cannot do without illegals. Wrong. How long do you think it would take to replace them with immigrants (legal) from Africa, India and China? A month?
7. Illegals take jobs Americans don't want. Wrong. Recent studies show the opposite, illegals take American jobs because they work for less, illegally, without benefits. Check out Tyson and Swift meat packing. When the raids occurred, Americans took the jobs, though all the anti rule of law anarachy people said only illegals would do those jobs.
8. You can keep your culture and still be an Ameican. Wrong. You can keep aspects of it, and enjoy it, but Americans have their own culture and you must adopt it and place it first. That means English only in pubic, and Ameican values su as the rule of law.
