The fervent supporters of Ron Paul, who seem to swim the internet 24 hours a day, are always complaining about their candidate being ignored. Sometimes they even do it politely.
They'll get back to that tomorrow. But for today they'll have to shut up and revel in a singular achievement--and its growing notice in the media. They contributed more than $5 million to the Texas representative's insurgent campaign for president in the third quarter. $5,080,000 to be exact. A 114 percent increase over the second quarter, while some other prominent candidates had lower numbers.
"As these fundraising numbers show," said Kent Snyder, Paul campaign chairman, "more Americans each day are embracing Dr. Paul's message."
For weeks Paul supporters, who huddle on their own chatsites to organize Comment-writing campaigns on widespread websites, have been claiming that the 72-year-old Republican ob-gyn was gaining strength. But all they could point to as evidence were minor straw polls. Now, they've got a not-insignificant pile of money, which serves as votes in the public mind until the actual balloting begins come January.
True, $5 million pales in comparison to the $27 million Hillary Clinton raised this past quarter or the $100 million she and Barack Obama are each expected to raise this year. But Paul's haul isn't far behind the far-more-established John Edwards' $7 million for the third quarter.
And get this: Ron Paul's $5 million is about five times what former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee raised last quarter, despite all his enhanced publicity springing from a second-place finish in the Ames straw poll.
Despite his good reviews--last weekend former president Bill Clinton, also from Hope, Ark. even called Huckabee the best GOP speaker--Huckabee's long-shot campaign like Edwards' may face increasing money difficulty these next three months as the elections near and financial supporters start inching--or flooding--toward the favorites' camps to protect themselves and their interests.
For now, the Newsweek poll has the Arkansan statistically tied with Giuliani for third in Iowa.
Huckabee's name, however, continues to be mentioned as a nice Southern/Heartland conservative flavor to add as a vice presidential partner if the top of the GOP ticket is from the Northeast.
Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani's campaign are playing press release chicken with each other today, each holding back their third-quarter numbers for the best timing for them. They're the consistent poll and fundraising leaders with Paul in the low single digits. His supporters claim the polls are biased and under-report Paul people.
But for this afternoon the attention is focused on Paul. Oh, and by the way, his low-budget campaign reported having $5.3 million cash on hand, which may even enable it to buy a TV ad in Iowa and New Hampshire. If they purchase 9,999 more, they'll equal just Romney's TV buys so far.
Andrew Malcolm writes for Top of the Ticket, the Los Angeles Times' political blog.

Comments
The reason Ron Paul supporters don't like the Gallup Polls is because they hold so much weight but are not as scientific as many say it is.
A Superdelegate was called by Gallup, she was a Ron Paul supporter, and they asked her "Thompson, Giuliani, Romney, or McCain?" She said, "Ron Paul", and the correspondent said "Who's that?" and "How bout someone who is currently running?"
These polls are a popularity contest and the media uses it as "this is what voters think."
In Texas 2004-Bush voters went to a Straw Poll. Paul was at 1% at that time and at this straw poll he received 17%. Was there a 16% margin of error, among only the past Republicans nonetheless?
So, day after day, we see other candidates get the spotlight while media pundits mislabel Paul as a "isolationist", "have no chance", "should get out of the debates". It doesn't make sense to me nor the other supports, so we protest.
Hopefully this quarter he will take McCain's spot in the "top-tier" candidates, and maybe Gallup will include him in the polls rather than having a "write-in".

It's a great day for the message: Freedom, Prosperity, and Peace.
Ron Paul has 43,000 volunteers in 767 cities. Let's see Mitt Romney buy THAT.

Andrew Malcolm- You have got to be the most ignorant and hateful journalist yet. The American people do not like how the media is choosing this election, you journalists would be wise to lose your bias or wind up on the wrong end of the 'pitch fork'.

Imagine that! Despite near total media blackout, Ron Paul raises over 5 million! And, true to his word, he's frugal about spending, just as he would be with our tax dollars.
I'd say Freedom is popular! Go Ron Paul!!

"...If they purchase 9,999 more, they'll equal just Romney's TV buys so far."
Romney has loaned him campaign $15,000,000. Without it his campaign would be BANKRUPT. Is that how he plans on running the country?! I'll take Ron Paul's conservative fiscal practices over his any day.

Go Ron - 12 Million for Q 4!!!
That should be easy now that he is top tier!

Posted by: Joe Safety | October 3, 2007 8:59 PM
Ron Paul has an incredible message--We should follow the Constitution! How radical! He is consistent in his message AND his voting record. Even if there are issues that I disagree with, I don't believe he wants to impose them on me or anyone else. I believe this is why he has such broad-based, diverse support. His fundraising numbers, especially as they are primarily from middle class America with no big corporate money, represent a substantial portion of the population. This percentage could very well be underrepresented in the "polls" that the media relies on as many younger people (

A Ron Paul dollar goes a heck of a lot further than a RudyMcrhompsons's. Their campaign gets about 8 miles to the gallon while the Ron Paul's message of freedom is the most capitol efficient machine on the interstate. The American people are fed up with American Idol contest that typifies those who wish to lead the United States of Entertainment. Any of the top tier represent a different face on the same sick head. That being said, I appreciate the coverage that ABC has provided here for Dr. Paul.
Posted by: David | October 3, 2007 9:12 PM
I was all for one of the top tier candidates until I heard the impressive ways that Ron Paul proposes tackling America's issues. How could you vote for anyone else except this man who has lived a life consistent with the beliefs that he expresses in every debate? The other candidates disgust me. I feel like I'm watching a High School popularity contest. Along comes Ron - and he's the guy that could get the job done better than all the rest put together. Humble. Intelligent. Willing and willing to put the American people first. Not government. Long live America and Long live Ron Paul.

Why Don't You Know Ron Paul??????
The corporate media will not give Ron Paul any Exposure. Because, NBC is owned by GE. GE is one of the world's largest war-makers. They make things that go boom. They make $Billions on war. A Ron Paul administration would be bad for business. CNN is owned by AOL. Majority share holder is Saudi Royal Talal who is also partners with GHWBush in The Carlyle Group. Another major warmaker. And on and on. You get the picture. This is why they are doing a Media Blackout on him. Because they don't WANT YOU TO KNOW THE TRUTH!!!!!

It is very interesting to compare the amount of money that lobbying groups and pacs that have donated to the many campaigns. Ron Paul has accepted no such donations while the other campaigns have accepted a significant amount of funds. Ron Paul's donations come entirely from individual contributions. I think this is an apt demonstration of where the candidates' loyalties lie.
Posted by: litcigar | October 3, 2007 9:23 PM
The 5 million dollars speaks volumes. With very little media coverage, Ron Paul can still reach people and raise money.
Ron Paul is a contender.

i.e. I would not be counted amongst the "likely republican primary" voters that are polled.
Today I registered as a Republican.
How much do you want to bet that a majority of Paul's following is in my boat, and is flooding into the Republican party? :)

Ron Paul's campaing is obviously gaining momentum. His message must be resonating with more people. His dedication to the US Constitution and his policies promoting peace, prosperity and freedom are paying off.

It's so pathetic how people like this lame-excuse-for-a-journalist can get away with publishing this utter crap. It's pathetic that they keep painting Ron Paul's supporters as a bunch of young people living in their parents' basements, doing nothing for Ron's campaign other than spamming the internet. Very pathetic.
Media fat cats, please keep shooting yourselves in the foot, it only makes Ron's support grow even more. If/when this country finally goes to hell, you won't have the right to blame it on us. It is the hordes of sheep, who lack critical thinking skills and common sense, that are going to be the death of this country. There's no guarantee that a person like Ron Paul will be running in 2012, 2016, 2020, etc.

I bet it hurt really bad for you to write that. As pained and condescending as that article was, nonetheless, you still worked up a few to muttle through writing it. Good job! This "insurgent" campaign grows stronger without your help. "We The People" are taking back our God-given rights. Now, that may sound trite to you, but enough has finally become enough and we are showing REAL patriotism (not your flag-waving, oblivious and robotic brand of it). Americans are flocking in droves to Dr. Paul, not because your media has helped any, that is even obvious to you, but because he plainly states the obvious. He is a man of truth and has the record to show for it. There is not one supporter of his that agrees with everything he says but we all agree that he is a truly dignified and principled man. He represents what a statesman should be and what we all crave. Truth.

I'm a 51 year old liberal who intends to vote for Ron Paul. Pundits will marginalize him because it's more fun for them to treat him as an oddity. Plus, there is a bit of fear, because he is not the conventional GOP candidate. If Paul had Romney's good looks, they would cover him far differently. Watch the 10/9 CNBC debate on the economy - this is really Ron Paul's strength.

The $5 million will be all the more impressive when the number of individual donors are reported. The media should do a story on his organization: close to 60,000 Meetup group members nationawide who will take this campaign to the next level over the next 90 days.
Dr. Ron Paul is THE candidate of change for this election. He is the only person running who will end the war in IRAQ. If you're not familiar with his positions hear them for yourself at: http://www.ronpaul2008.com
To help make Ron Paul the Republican nominee YOU MUST REGISTER AS A REPUBLICAN to vote in the upcoming primaries in most states. Don't delay! Some state parties are changing registration deadlines even now.

GO RON PAUL! GO RON PAUL! GOD BLESS RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT 2008!
I'm a 48 year old grandfather who's greatly appreciating the Ron Paul Presidential campaign! The BIGGER story however is, that Ron Paul has $5.3M cash on hand and that he's NOT going to take matching funds! Most political experts estimate the Ron Paul grass-roots army of 50,000+ and rapidly growing volunteers to be worth in the area of approx. $10M/per month in campaign contributions! SO WAKE UP NEOCONS! America is sick and tired of "BIG Brother" government breathing down our necks and getting us involved in no-win, unconstitionally, undeclared "military-industrial" growth wars in the middle east and the 130 other countries we have a presence in at the taxpayers expense of approx.. $1 TRILLION per year! I personally deplore working 5 months out of the year to pay my income tax obligation that goes 100% strictly on just the "interest payment" on the national debt to the "ultra-private" Federal Reserve Banking Corporation! Of course, I detest our current "pack of beaurocrats" who are spending our tax dollars like a "junkie waiting for his next fix!" I am extremely delighted as to the way Ron Paul has shown his frugal fiscal responsibility regarding his personal campaign - Let's compare that with any other presidential candidates finances and review their "donations vs.. expenditures" ratios? Then ask yourself this important question - Who do you really want running our economy for the next 4-8 years? A fiscal conservative that thinks our dollars should be backed by something other than printing money out of "thin air" and who would replace the IRS & the Federal Reserve with NOTHING! Or the same 'ole same 'ole ... This may be our last chance ... The choice is yours ... GOOGLE Ron Paul for yourself
and get the WHOLE story on the man many believe to be an American Hero!!!

Ron Paul should feel great about gathering a base, and us Republicans who value conservative ideals, rather than extreme libertariansm, should not be concerned. His chances of being elected as the Republican candidate in the primaries are extremely small.
The real message here is that the candidate with the best shot at winning conservative votes - Huckabee - needs our financial support.

To learn more about Ron Paul, go to www.ronpaul2008.com, Google Ron Paul, or search for Ron Paul videos on YouTube. There is basically one message that serves as the foundation of all of his stances on issues: a return to the ideals of the Constitution is the best way to bring America back to its traditional respected position in the world.
Abolish the IRS
When Paul says he would abolish the IRS, it's not because he doesn't believe in taxes. He doesn't believe in the government taxing your income before it's in your hands. There will still be taxes (sales tax, or import tax) to fund the much smaller government. What you make would be yours. If you make $30,000 you get $30,000.
Abolish Dept of Education
Paul obviously doesn't mean that he opposes Education when he says that he would abolish the Dept. of Education. He simply means that he does not believe that the Federal (national) government should be attempting to control the Education of our children. It should be up to the States just like it has always been, and this is what Paul would attempt to restore as President.
Abortion
Yes, Paul personally is opposed to abortion. However, to the Democrats and Independents out there who fear Paul forcing his abortion stance on the rest of America - fear not. Two things: one, with a Democratic Congress the issue of abortion remaining an option is safe. More importantly, though, is Ron Paul's guiding principle. He does not believe in big government so he does not believe that the national government should restrict the lives of the people. If the abortion issue arose, he would not outlaw it across the country like many other Republican candidates possibly would; he would simply make the decision up to the States, so that those states that are mostly against abortion do not have to allow it, and those states mostly for it can allow it.
Education yourself and education your friends. Learn more about Ron Paul at www.ronpaul2008.com. Watch the videos.

Polling results may be skewed by the fact that it is illegal to call mobile phones to do opinion polling. If Ron Paul supporters are disproportionately "younger" and/or more technically savvy, they may not even have a land-line for the poll-takers to call.
Has anyone noticed that in the last few election cycles there have been some pretty big disparities between pre-election polls and the actual votes?
I think the media should stop basing their election coverage on (possibly inaccurate) polls. Cover the "ideas race", NOT the "horse race".

I think the most impressive thing here is the 114% increase, in a quarter than usually shows a lull in donations. Combine this with the fact all that money is from private individuals and it's a powerful statement. I've never been in a Gallup poll. I'm also in my 20s and have posted maybe 3 comments on any web posting/articles. To dismiss support as young computer savvy kids is not only farce but who wouldn't want that as true? Don't forget the youth of today is our tomorrow. And if they're that savvy then we have a smarter generation ahead of us. The so-called "conservative" media hacks are shunning Ron Paul. (Glenn Beck deliberately omitted Paul's name on his website poll!!) They've been spoon-feeding their audiences for so long they actually believe they've succeeded in making mindless robots of us all! But we've caught them in their lies, spin, and propaganda and now WE will shut THEM out! Whatever will they do when they see their ratings plummet because their former audience (all 2 million of us!) are out campaigning for our hero, Ron Paul? It can and it will happen! Instead of listening to their garbage, i.e, Clinton, Obama, Huckabee, and Thompson, we'll be knocking on doors and handing out "Slim Jims" to the NEXT Ron Paul supporter! And every day we'll bring on new supporters by the 100s and 1000s!!!

It's heartening to see that so many are getting Dr. Paul's message. Too bad it took so much money to get the media's attention. Seeing how much momentum he has built during a media blackout, imagine what he will do with it.
I remember a talk he gave during his run for Libertarian president. He said that (being a doctor) he became sick of the governmental mandates about things they know nothing about. He developed a phosophy that said "The government may be able to control everything about my finances and the laws I break or don't break, but I actually belong to myself - at least from the skin in, I own myself." What a concept!

As an organizer, I can tell you that my membership numbers grow every time a mainstream media outlet labels Ron Paul as having no chance. They often site that as the reason that they looked into him.
So, I want to thank you! If all the media attention for Ron Paul were positive, people wouldn't be motivated as much to get out and do something!
Like many of the other 'top tier' they are most likely going to fizzle out simply because the media says they will be the winners, so noone feels any need to actually support them. On election day, their supporters will find better things to do, feeling secure that their guy will win.
Thanks again, MSM. I really appreciate all that you are doing for your country, even if it is unintended!

Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support the $5-million dollar man, Dr. Ron Paul and save this country.

Do you honestly believe that the millions of Americans that support Paul and the campaign money that he's garnished is the work of internet loons? What even is an internet loon, Andrew? You put too much weight in the "scientific" land line polls. These polls only reflect the name recognition of candidates that the elderly remember from being berated by the certain names 24/7 on the corporately owned mainstream news. More and more people are going cellular, and this is not represented in the "scientific" polls you seem to be so in love with.
I wouldn't underestimate Ron Paul's power. He has hundreds of meet-up groups doing work for him absolutely free of charge (In addition to his 5+ million.) How many other candidates can claim that?
Furthermore, you're an elitist pig who needs to get off of his power trip.

As far as shutting up and reveling in "a singular achievement"? Don't bet on it. I'll be reveling 3 months from now when Ron announces he's raised 12 mill.

This article is why Ron Paul supporters get frustrated. The Baltimore Sun is a large and important media outlet, and the writer puts down RP supporters as wierd (any press is good press, so keep it coming please). NOBODY is second tier - all ideas and positions should be treated equally so the VOTERS can decide the outcome, not the media, pollsters, or large corporate doners. This is a supposed to be a "free" country and citizens are starting to wake up that it is not and something behind the scenes smells bad. The only medium that gives people a voice is the Internet, and that is why people are using it to discuss Ron Paul - because the political writers are not and should be. Ron Paul's positions are IMPORTANT and need to be analyzed by the media. Open request to all media writers: PLEASE take a close look at what Ron Paul is saying! WHY is the Federal Reserve not Constitutional, what is the real story with the IRS code and how it was created and that it does not square with the Constitution, what is wrong with the Executive Branch which now operates like a kingdom (what happened to checks and balances?) - and why, please God why, is the USA a war-machine? There is too much war! Year after year, war, war, war - but why, really? People don't want to kill that much and who is really getting us into these darn wars. Most people, we the people, want to raise our families - not kill other families on the other side of the world in the name of "doing our duty" or "protecting democracy" or worse, protecting our "national interest" which is really saying "protecting oil interests". We need to dig and dig deep into the reasons behind the reasons. Please, media, dig!

Ron Paul's supporters are on the internet so much because is the best way to get out information when you are ignored by the national media and press. The Ron Paul support is real, it is growing, and that is because America is tired of Washington's game! It's time for a change; and that change is Ron Paul!!!

"If they purchase 9,999 more, they'll equal just Romney's TV buys so far."
Such "vitriol" criticism toward a candidate who for all intents is the political equivalent of George Washington.
Would you spit on Washington, as you spit on Paul? Methinks.

What a hack job. Learn to write.
The outpouring of support for Ron Paul will drown you all. You keep looking at the little ships on the sea and don't notice the ocean rising around you. We like being the underdogs, all our supporters are underdogs, underdogs can and do win.
The recent publicity will grow our numbers even more, we will work harder, give more and do more then any other candidates supporters. Because our cause is just, WE WILL SAVE AMERICA!

Ron Paul is the man who reminds us where we came from. We're the United States of America, home of the free. It started with the Magna Carta in 1025, written about(Rights of Man) by John Lock in the 1600s and brought to fruitation with the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Constitution was based on this thread and produced the most wealth the world has ever seen; also the most respect from the most people in the world. We've blown it and Dr. Paul is trying his level best to tell us how to fix it. He doesn't need to be doing this. He'd rather be home with his family. When you see a car wreck you try to help, don't you? Even if your back's out...right? So please help this heroic old coot get on the ballet and give those Constitutional criminals a run for their money.
