“I stand here as a cultural conservative,’’ former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania told fellow conservatives today.
“We are Americans who believe that America from its inception was the greatest country in the world – not because of its military or economic power, but because of its ideas and its culture,’’ Santorum said. “It is not multicultural’’ – and this comment resonated among a nearly entirely white crowd filling the ballroom of the Washington Hilton for a Values Voter Summit.
“We are people who believe that these great American ideals should be reflected in our laws,’’ he said. “Like your predecessors, you will be marginalized and excoriated by the wealthy and the powerful, and unfortunately the media… It is in the darkest moments that even the smallest light draws people to it.’’
This week, he said, conservatives are attempting to determine if there is a candidate who can shine light into the darkness.
“Many… are concerned if there is such a candidate running in 2008,’’ he told a crowd attempting to determine if there is. “The answer is, there must be, and we must fight to ensure there is.’’
“There isn’t a single candidate in the Democratic Party who sees America the way we do,’’ Santorum said. “That doesn’t mean that their likely nominee won’t be saying things and doing things to appeal to the values voters… You will hear Sen. Clinton…(say) how abortions should be rarer… and went down during her husband’s presidency….’’ Yet, he said, she has argued for the law enabling what abortion-opponents call “partial-birth abortion.’’
Santorum recounted a long debate which he had had with Clinton in the Senate. “My great hope is that abortion becomes rarer and rarer,’’ he quoted the senator from New York and now leading Democratic candidate for president as saying. “I would only add that during the Nineties it did.’’
The audience groaned.
“The other side understands that the arguments they have are simply untenable,’’ he said. “They couch it in such compassionate terms – of caring about people, about the painful decisions. They have to water it down. It pulls at the heart strings of the people.’’
“These are not tough issues,’’ he said. “You will hear from a number of candidates how difficult the social issues are… But let me assure you, it is the right thing to do. When we look at the history of America, America has not always got it right the first time… But when faced with the facts… America has got it right.’’
“You are that conscience,’’ Santorum told the crowd of religious right voters in search of a presidential candidate. “You are the American ideal…. Do not despair.’’

Great...just what we need is more division. Why would this pompous ass feel like the republicans have some better feel what America is? These "great" Americans have no idea what America is about and statements like this just prove it.
Go McCarthey!!!!!!

Santorum is correct. The Democratic leadership and those on the Far Left want to destroy America. They are against everything that made this country great and for everything that weakens America.
They want to dumb down American schools so one person feels less worthy than another. And they want the dumbing down so they can make those people dependent on an all-knowing and all-powerful government. They want us beholden to them.
They want understanding of history to alter their own warped sense of historical reality. Most importantly, and sadly, the Left believes parents have no role or say in their child's development. For instance a school in Portland, Ore. is going to dispense birth control pills to students who ask for them and one administrator said that "parents have no rights" as to whether their child is accepting birth control medication or not.
And, Mark, nice little dig Santorum and multiculturalism. That is completely taking out of context Santorum's intent. Nobody is saying that folks cannot appreciate, practice, etc. cultures from other parts of the world. But separating cultures or not inegrating folks into the American culture does no one good. That is the issue.

Face it, Ricky Santorum - if either Rudy or Mitt are nominated for President, the Democrats will make mince meat of them with their flip-flopping on issues. Plus, you know these right-wing nutjobs you are pandering to today will stay home because the nominee is not "Conservative" enough for them.
Don't forget that Mitt said his 5 military age sons are being patriotic not by serving in the military, but by driving an RV around Iowa helping Daddy.
So who does that leave?? McCain? Ron Paul?? Fred Thompson?

it seems for along time that republicans are more interested in the flag as a symbol of what they believe than if americans go hungary at night. lies and mistruths are justified because "after all, they are republicans"
Posted by: ron hornback | October 19, 2007 5:01 PM
American ideas and culture according to Mr. Santorum and his cohorts are not multicultural. Hmmmm. Does that mean that the contributions made by Asians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and Arabs are not to be included within American culture?
I wonder how many of these so called "Values" voters are defacto members of the Ku Klux Klan? What is it exactly are these people so afraid of? There is just something so inherently wrong for a former senator (or any person for that matter) to speak in front of a racially exclusive audience to speak of "values". That's just really frightening.

Yes... throughout American history it has been the White Evangelicals who are invited to Black-Tie parties MC'd by high-ranking politicians in Washington Ballrooms that are constantly margianalized and excoriated by the wealthy and powerful.
Rick Santorum is a true student of American history and obviously understands it's lessons on today. Won't somebody please think of the poor, downtrodden White Christian Plutocrats amongst us!

How does that work exactly, Lil Johnny D? Did the man not say that?
Posted by: Crafty B | October 19, 2007 5:41 PM
If Santorum is claiming American moral superiority, was America the greatest country in the world when it committed genocide against Native Americans? Was America the greatest country in the world when its laws permitted slavery? Was America the greatest country when it invaded Mexico for the purpose of confiscating half their land? When we turned our backs on genocides in Africa?

I think that John D hates America.
The right threatens our schools with vouchers that would create a two tier educaton system and give handouts to the rich. "No Child Left Behind" had tied the hands of educators and pushed more funding out of the classroom. The right wants to take away parental rights as to what gets taught in the classroom - they've tried to implement Bible studies under the guise of 'science', they want to require prayer in schools.
The right hates our freedoms and despises the concepts of equality, freedom, and liberty for anyone that does not fall in their very narrow list of valued citizens and they have absolute contempt for the rest of the world. Countries that found us arrogant and ignorant 10 years ago now see us as an evil and corrupt powerhouse ruling with an iron fist. We need to protect ourselves from the worst of ourselves and get these bozos out of office.

Like I tell people all the time. The KKK has risen from outdoor meetings to the political arena.
He just told you in his comment that American roots are not multi-cultural. And wants to go back to this. He is right that Whites brought in slaves, created their own power structure and kept it from others for a very long - and still do - time.
How else can the KKK continue the fight - except to put their people in office and let them continue to generate power for their cause?? Think he can be burned at the stake??

Rick Sanitarium;
Can't you just picture him, as you lie helpless, strapped to the rack, slowly approaching you in a hooded shroud clutching the awful instruments of reconciliation in his grasping hands and whispering in your ear;
'Heretic ! Prepare for 'trial by ordeal!!'
To paraphrase the Republics:
Why is this guy still around? Who wants to hear from this loser? Why doesn't he just go away? (This is what the right wingers have said re; Clinton, Kerry, Carter, others. What's good for the goose is good for the brownshirt.)

I took some time off from looking at this site because of the lack of reason and the rampant hate that most of the posters spread. Thought I’d take a look to see if the editors raised the bar to a post juvenile level, nope. The same group of ignorant poster saying the same stuff they said 2 months ago, new stories same idiotic hate. This is why so many in the liberal press are ignored. I am sure that the Chicago Tribune is losing business. Why would anyone want to advertise in such a classless environment is beyond me.
Oh just in case no one noticed, GW is going to go down in history as one of the most important and effective presidents in history.

Crafty B,
By 'out of context', Grazy John means that the wrong people heard the quote. Only the ☁ Christians and conservatives were supposed to hear this tripe.
Since it was reported to the wider US population, well, it's out of context because they weren't supposed to hear it.
It's called 'private speech'.
Posted by: C.Morris | October 19, 2007 8:52 PM
There's that conservative logic (oxy-moron) agian.
“It (USA) is not multicultural’’
I came from a country that is ninety-five percent Catholic & one hundred percent white. That's about as close to being a single culture as you'll find in the world today.
The US - hold-on to your rhino hats - is the most ethnically & culturally diverse nation in history. That's what helps make this country great.
It seems conservatives need to see a bit more of the world, but it's a well known fact that being stubbornly narrow-minded & ignorant can be a hard habit to break.

Woops, never mind. Thanks for raising the discourse and helping to build bridges.
You're right though. "The left" loves terrorists and hates America and wants everyone to die and wishes Bin Laden would take over and rule the Caliphate. Oh, and everyone should have to get an abortion and the tax rate should be 101% and the only people who will be allowed to marry will be homosexuals who want to destroy every heterosexual marriage in the country and indoctrinate the nation's children into their sex-crazed harems.

I love America and I want what's best for America and we have to go back to our core morals and principles. We have to be a free nation not hampered by government regulations or burdensome taxation to be effective in business. God Bless America. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

There are Republicans running for President. I look for their comments on WHAT THE CURRENT REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATION HAS DONE FOR AMERICA.
I look for what the current Bush team has done for America and what the current campaigner is going to do to improve on what the Bush team has done.
So far, I have searched in vain for a POSITIVE achievement of the Bush team that is going to be a "jumping off point" for the next attempt at a Republican administration.
Big oil has had its best year EVER. But the Republicans don't talk about that!
I know of nothing else done by the Republicans worthy of comment.
My last experience here was not good. It was during the transition. I could not get a word in edge-wise on Congressman Jefferson. At that time there were three or four comments that did make the cut. They were all negative. I tried and tried and tried but could not get posted by THE SWAMP.
I still do pick my own topics over at my blog at Http://www.my-view.blogspot.com. I intend to comment further on "Dems don't see America the way we do" If I were a Republican, that is the last thing I would say - if I were not INDENIAL. And PollingReport.com (the electorate) also must not see America the way they do.

Senator Santorum may be just the source to shed some light on a serious question that Americans ought to be able to answer, but for the most part - cannot: why did America (the Bush team) go to war with Iraq?
Once the yellowcake "document" was proved to be a fake reticence set in at the Bush team.
But Senator Rick Santorum did provide a response.
Below is how James Bovard described the Bush teams response to a fake yellowcake document:
This greatly belated admission by an unnamed official was taken by senior Republicans as the proper close of the entire episode. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, declared,
Obviously, when you use foreign intelligence, you — we don’t have necessarily as much confidence or as much reliability as you do your own. It has since turned out to be, at least according to the reports that have been just released, not true. The president stepped forward and said so. I think that’s all you can expect.
But it is ludicrous to assert that “the president stepped forward and said so.” Bush never conceded his statements were false; instead, he busied himself in late June denouncing “historical revisionists” who were examining the administration’s record on Iraq. The Bush administration did not even have the gumption to permit the “senior administration official” to be named — and yet Santorum believes Bush deserves a “that’s all you can expect” response.
If you want to know why America (the Bush team) went to war with Iraq, Senator Santorum may be just the official to ask. He may have been closer to the answer to that question than most. The Bush team has not told. Is Senator Santorum independent enough of the Bush team to tell those mothers and fathers why the Bush team put their children in harms way?
The James Bovard article can be found at:
