Grandpa Freddy was pretty unimpressive to my ears. He was slow, but not in a deliberate, intellectual way. His answers were very superficial (even for a Republican presidential candidate) and he just plain looked bad.
I would enjoy hearing Bruce's explanation of how anyone could have been impressed with his performance. On pure debating, he was the least interesting of the bunch.
Ron Paul is of course the only completely sane Republican on the stage. I can't personally forgive Huckabee's evolution denial in the first debate, but otherwise I really like the man, even while disagreeing with many of his positions (though fewer disagreements than I have with the other candidates).
Giuliani is running for the GOP nomination against Hillary Clinton, apparently. Romney is by far the best looking of the bunch, but screams used car salesman to me. He's too slick by half and a pander bear to the extreme. Just wait until you start seeing old campaign ads for Romney when he was running in Massachusetts. He'll give flip-flop new meaning.
McCain was decent, the wise elder statesman of the bunch, but he was successfully skewered by uber-xenophobe Tancredo for encouraging illegal immigration.
All the candidates in one way or the other suggested tax cuts reduce the deficit. Only Huckabee and Paul even suggest that there's a problem in the economy right now. The economic policies of the front runners takes Bush's voodoo economics and ups the ante.
Besides Paul and Huckabee, none of the GOP candidates is likely to even attempt to reduce the deficit through proven means, instead relying on "tax cuts" (can one technically "cut taxes" when we are already borrowing the money?) as the magic bullet that cures all ails.
Republicans are the Mommy party, pretending that you can eat whatever you want and it won't make you fat or sick.
The Democrats are the Daddy party who will make you take your medicine even if it tastes bad, and in the end the country will be better off for it. Just like it was in the 90's.

At least someone got him to put on a little make-up. I thought he looked pasty in past photos.
