President Bush’s church, long at odds with him on matters of public policy, called on the United States and its partners today to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq immediately.
The Bishops of the United Methodist Church approved a resolution calling on Bush, Congress and leaders of the other coalition partners to begin the “immediate safe and full withdrawal” of all troops, declare that there will be no permanent military bases in Iraq, increase support for veterans of all wars and initiate a reconstruction plan to address the humanitarian, social and educational needs of the Iraqi people.
The 125 current and retired bishops now meeting in the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina represent more than 11 million Methodists worldwide – including the current occupant of the White House, a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.
In issuing the call, the bishops said their position is based on the denomination’s belief that “war is incompatible with the teachings and examples of Christ,” and on the call of Jesus Christ for “his followers to be peacemakers.”
“Every day that the war continues, more soldiers and innocent civilians are killed with no end in sight to the violence, bloodshed and carnage,” the bishops said in their resolution.
In a response, the White House said that Bush “believes our moral and strategic imperatives are one.”
“We must defeat the violent extremists who threaten the future of Iraq and threaten the United States,” spokesman Scott Stanzel said in an e-mail. “Our men and women in uniform are protecting Iraqi citizens from violent terrorists who want to indiscriminately murder innocent civilians by the tens, hundreds and thousands. Our effort to protect innocent life is a noble cause for which the American people should be proud.”
It’s not the first time church leaders have opposed their most prominent member.
“Having a United Methodist in office does not mean the president's policies will reflect those of the church,” the United Methodist News Service said after Bush was elected in 2000. “Moreover, United Methodists often differ among themselves and from the official positions … The death penalty, gun control, education, abortion and Social Security are some of the issues on which Bush's expressed views differ in some measure from official positions of the church.”
In 2005, bishops called on Bush to set a timeline for the withdrawal of troops, an action he has resisted. Some bishops and clergy are organizing against a proposed presidential library and policy institute at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, which is owned by the church.
Their concerns that the policy institute would lead to the church hosting a conservative think-tank over which it would have little oversight do not appear to have blocked the project. The George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation announced today that former Ambassador Mark Langdale, a friend and former neighbor of the Bushes, would become president of the organization.
“While a final decision on the location of the George W. Bush Presidential Library has not yet been announced, the foundation is currently in exclusive discussions with Southern Methodist University to locate the library on SMU’s Dallas campus,” the foundation said.
Stanzel, the White House spokesman, said Bush remains on course to reduce troop levels in Iraq from 20 combat brigades to 15 by next July.
“The President’s views on troop levels are clear – the more successful we are in bringing peace and stability to Iraq, the more American troops can return home,” he said. “Over recent months, our forces have worked with coalition partners and Iraqis at the local level to make real gains on security. Our success in meeting the surge objectives allows us to begin bringing some of our troops home.”

What? I thought War was good? Aren't all the GOP family values idiots pro war? They only care about life before it is born, after that their motto is "kill 'em all, let god sort 'em out."

If war is hell, what's that make those who start them?

The problem is that the United Methodist Bishops do not have the George W. Bush Translation of the Bible. If they did they would understand the godly nature of Bush's policy in Iraq.
"Blessed are the War-makers, the Kindom of Iraq shall be theirs."
"Blessed are the torturers, for they will obtain information of little value"
"Blessed are the mercenaries, their killlings will be ignored"

Apparently the Bishops don't have access to the Almighty that the profit from Crawford has.

The little man in the white house would not even pull out the troops if his father would ask him too. Remeber he is always right and what would you expect from an American Mussolini? expect more of the same.

No one from Iraq has ever threatened the United States.
The only party that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians is the United States.
Other than those minor points, I suppose the White House could be right, right in saying absolutely nothing.

Obviously, Bush's faith isn't in his church or Bishops. It is in his God, whom he is certain supports his killing ways.

The Libs finally found religious people they can like. At least when these religious people echo the doctrine of the Church of Liberalism.
I wonder of "San Miguel", "nislieb" and their ilk would follow the Bishop's lead on another issue: "In the United Methodist Church’s Book of Discipline – the denomination’s constitution – two things are deemed “incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ:” war and homosexual practices." Where's the left's outrage about religion interfering in gov't affairs?
Should their non-profit tax status be revoked?

"In the United Methodist Church’s Book of Discipline – the denomination’s constitution – two things are deemed “incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ:” Propaganda and vacant right wing views. Good luck getting beyond the pearly gates Bruce. But hey at least you can say you hate homosexuals.

Ok, I'll give you homosexual practices as long as you call for Iraq withdrawal tonight. After all, if we can save a few decent Americans now, and pass the gay agenda on in a few years, it's a win-win for us loony lefties all the way.
Posted by: rncbs | November 9, 2007 6:47 PM
Ah, the worst the world has to offer, the loony lefties. They have invaded the United Methodist Church & are now attempting to spread liberal dogma.
I'm not worried. I'm sure Pat Robertson, & members of Bob Jones University will assure conservatives that members of the United Methodist Church are going to hell & their bishops are agents of the devil. Some of us Catholics are already feeling the heat.

The loony left will never get it. Blowing people up and discrimination are pillars of the American way of life. Why don't you whining liberals do something useful with your life, like shopping at Wal-Mart and watching Nascar!!!
Ann Coulture for president.
Hey she can't be any worse the George Bush can she???
On second thought...

Organized crime families are these religious groups. War in the name of religion. What a crock; what a flock.

Hard to believe all the so-called "Christians" that revel in murdering people they've never met (well, bravely cheering on the mass murders from the safety and comfort of their armchairs) and calling everyone hateful names like "fag".
Might as well call themselves "Xtians", because they seem to have left the Christ part out of their espoused beliefs entirely.
Not too bright, these people. Too lazy to read an actual newspaper article; much easier to tune into Fock Snooze for the daily Two Minutes Hate than to think rationally.

Bush's bishops: "Exit Iraq now."
Ya know, that makes sense. Why didn't our president think of that. He should go to church more.

The United Methodist Church has liberal leanings.
If you remember, Elian Gonzalez was railroaded back to Cuba by a lawyer hired by the Methodist Church.
Many of the mainline churches have liberal agendas.
I am a conservative Catholic but, I do not agree with leftist Catholic groups like Pax Christi.
John Barry is wrong we are on track. We are hounded by AlQuaeda and Islamic Jihadists that want to destroy Israel and America.
Thank God for President Bush he is keeping us safe in our homeland while we are winning the surge.
Our brave men and women taking the fight to Al Quaeda is the right thing to do. This is a just war against human animals who hide behind women and children in mosques, schools and hospitals. These innocent Muslims are blown up too.
God bless President Bush and our troops and bring them home safely. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Jeez BruceTroll, you are really on a roll today. Maybe when you learn to write a coherent sentence people will respect your intellect and listen to what you say.
Until then, you are just another braindead neocon who can't even compose a cogent sentence.

A George Bush Library....I did not know he could READ! If he could read,he would know the unpopularity of the war! OPPPS I guess like everything else in his presidency,he leaves reading to his aides ....

The bishops don't seem to realize that W doesn't need their advice...God speaks to him directly. If W didn't heed the Pope when the Pope asked him not to invade Iraq in the first place, why should he heed a bunch of Protestants?

This Bush story is beyond ironically hilarious and well into the insanely hysterical zone.
Just how will GWB reconcile this move by his own church?
Posted by: C.Morris | November 10, 2007 8:15 PM
Too little, too late. Sadly, the state of the leadership in the evangelical churches has been reduced to this:
Jesus loves us this we know
Pat Robertson has told us so,
Disagree? We'll take you out,
You commie lefties aren't devout.
Yes, Jesus loves us.
Yes, Jesus loves us.
Yes, Jesus loves us.
Robertson told us so.
I doubt even one of them has read the New Testament. If they have, they completely ignore Jesus and focus on Paul, who was an anal prat for the most part.

I believe our problem in the U.S.is that our government allows the killing of innocent children in the womb. I believe for that reason we are unsuccessful against our enemies. I believe
God will help us when we clean up our own permissive right to kill a baby before it is born. Remember, God controls the world and this unsuccesful war effort could be payment for our own sins. Bush would reverse the law himself if he could. Our legal system protects the crime against God when we give a mother the right to kill her child.
We all know that there is a child growing in the womb, and God allows it to grow. We work against God by allowing this license to kill stand. Our laws are not in conformity with God's laws.

What a sad day when you can't follow your church's advice but it seems no one in this country is following the good book. All are lying, stealing and cheating to get ahead of the line for themselves. GOD's wisdom and understanding of man has been replaced by selfishness. "My way" rather than, "Yaweh"
Posted by: david, philadelphia, pa. | November 10, 2007 11:23 PM
I agree with frances marie..we kill more children in the wombs legally. Mr. Bush needs our prayers for guidance including a strong leadership to end abortion. Even unborn children have inalienable rights to pursue justice, liberty and happiness. Each of us has a duty to start peace
within us first before we can change the world.

The Bishops do not speak for the church. They only represent themselves, and this should be made clear to the media. And they are wrong about Iraq. To go into Iraq was the right thing, the moral thing to do.
