The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

ANKENY, Iowa—Intensifying the rhetoric over competing health-care expansion plans, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused rival Barack Obama of "betraying" Democratic principles Wednesday while he questioned whether she was more interested in scoring political points than in explaining her plans.

The attacks on each side reflected a deepening contentiousness between the two major Democratic contenders on the issue of providing universal health insurance, an issue that has consistently ranked among the top list of concerns of party voters.

Clinton has maintained her plan, which would mandate that people obtain insurance with the help of tax breaks and employer assistance, represents universal coverage while Obama's would leave millions uninsured.

But Obama has maintained that Clinton has failed to show how she would force Americans to get insurance. He has said his plan, which would mandate coverage only for children while offering various subsidies for adults, would make insurance more affordable for people to get.

After nearly a week of debate between the two, the New York senator used an appearance at a community college campus to question whether Obama, an Illinois senator, has the vision and experience to seek major social change on health care.

"If we don't have universal health care, we will be betraying the Democratic Party's principles and it's important that those who will caucus on Jan. 3 understand this difference" with Obama, Clinton said.

Citing the creation of the encompassing social programs of Social Security and Medicare under Democratic Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson, Clinton said, "They also knew that if you aim too low, if you give up before the fight has started, then you have no chance of making it to the finish line."

Obama's campaign labeled Clinton's comments "another desperate attack" and Obama told Iowa reporters in a conference call that the New York senator has not identified how she intends to enforce a mandate for people to get insurance, even if it is not affordable.

"The main difference that she is focusing on right now is that I believe that the reason people don't have healthcare is because they can't afford it, not because they don't want it," the Illinois senator said. Clinton's mandate, he said, "is more of a political point that she's trying to make than a real point."

Earlier in the day, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware told a group of Iowa's county officials in Des Moines that it was "fantasy" to believe the U.S. troop surge in Iraq is working since its goal was to lead to a fully functioning unity government in the war-torn country. Biden said there is " no political progress among the major factions" in trying to govern Iraq.

Dodd, who appeared earlier before the county officials also appeared to take a shot at Clinton by referencing the campaign slogan—turn up the heat—that her campaign unveiled earlier this month.

"Some people talk about turning up the heat, firing up the crowd, making people angry and convincing people how strong a fighter you are," Dodd said. "I think the American people would like to tone down the heat, tone down the rhetoric and they'd like to see us get together and start solving problems for the people of the states."

Let me get this straight. Senator Clinton is going to provide universal coverage by forcing everyone to buy health insurance? Why not eliminate poverty by forcing everyone to get a better job?

Mandating health insurance for children is reasonable because parents have a responsibility to their children. Mandating that every adult buy health insurance is fraught with problems. It doesn't address the real problem which is rising health care costs. In fact, it seems to me that it would raise health costs by interfering with existing market forces.

The real story here is that Clinton claims her plan provides universal coverage but doesn't say how her mandate that everyone buy insurance would be enforced. Even though there are better state-level enforcement options available to car insurance mandates, we still have the problem of uninsured drivers.

Didn't Senator Clinton try to fix the health care problem already? I would think she would have put more thought into her second attempt.

What was it Llewellen Moss says to to the barely alive drug runner in the Coen's new movie?; "Where's the last man standing?"
With the Dem's, will it be last man standing or only woman?

Speaking of "No Country for Old Men", this might apply to McCain and Thompson as well.

On an unrelated note, Herr "turd blossom" was in the news again. Can anyone in government be trusted anymore? From the WSJ:

Hillary is getting increasingly desperate. She is behind in Iowa, and knows that an Obama victory might result in an Obama NH victory, and maybe the nomination.

The Clinton machine will damage Obama, and damage themselves in the process. The winner? John Edwards.

His supporters in Iowa are most likely to caucas, and he will take off. he is also white and male, which have counted for quite a bit in the history of mankind.

Hillary is suffering from illusion. How does she intend to enforse his mandate?

"Aim too low"?! Clinton proposes that as far as Gay rights are concerned she would allow a large part of the right wing hate-inspired Defense of Marriage Act to remain in force, (Obama wants it all repealed), and restrict "Civil Unions" to "long-term, stable"
relationships, (Obama wants NO conditions). I guess it's OK for her to "aim low" on my civil rights because they are not so popular, but to slam Obama for a health plan based on practicality for everyday Americans. Clinton's hypocrisy is showing again. Every time she tries to take the high road she reveals her unattractive underbelly.

Well, Hillary/Bill how will you make people buy health insurance? Send them to jail if they don't? Fine them? Deny them treatment if they show up in an emergency room? Garnish their wages and buy it for them? The World is waiting for your answer. Don't just go an accuse your opponent of betraying Democratic values. Explain yourself. Quit being so flippant and try to be real.

It appears that Hillary Clinton is using the minor differences on health care proposals with Obama to reduce his lead in the Iowa polls. It seems the Iowa caucus is getting more negative.

Sure didn't take much for Hillary to show her mean nasty side. Sheesh.

I am not sure why Obama & Clinton are having this type of debate as against concentrating of liberals

Obama "betrays" Democratic values? So he's a traitor to the party?

What was that you said a couple of weeks ago about mudslinging

The only enforcement of Hillary's mandatory health coverage would seem to be that if you are not enrolled and are sick, then:

You will be arrested and given publicly funded medical care while in custody, or

You will be refused medical care and turned away, or

You will be enrolled on the spot, your premium payment would be either collected, deferred, or excused, and you will be treated, or

If illegally in this country, a special driver's license will be issued to serve as acceptable identification to enroll you for immediate coverage.

It's no wonder that she won't answer Obama's question.

I'd rather see affordable health care than the government imposing its will on me. Why doesn't Hillary answer the question on how she'll enforce the mandate. Don't we have a right to know. She has a snowballs chance in hell to lead congress on how to do it. No mandates No Hillary.

Biden said there is " no political progress among the major factions" in trying to govern Iraq.

He's right.

Betraying Democratic Principles? You mean Obama is against raising taxes, tax and spend politics as usual, gun control, amnesty for Illegal aliens, drivers licenses for illegal aliens, social welfare giveaway programs, lying, speaking out of both sides of his mouth, political deception for personal gain and sex in the white house.
He must be a Republican.

Since neither of them has introduced their plan as legislation, despite having been in Congress for years, BOTH are posturing phonies on this issue.

Senator Clinton wants to "provide" universal health care by forcing everyone to contract with private insurance companies – even against their will – and at their own expense? Of course such a “mandate” wouldn’t be much of a mandate unless the plan included some means to coerce everyone to buy insurance. And then she claims that the federal government really wouldn't be running this?

Money is "property" within the meaning of the Fifth Amendment. This means the government's treatment of it must accord with two constitutional principles. First, the deprivation of this property must be preceded by due process. Second, that property cannot be taken for a private use. Even when it is taken for public use, the person from whom it is taken must be given just compensation for its taking.

In this regard, a law forcing a person to hand his or her property over to another private party for its benefit, while not a tax, is certainly to a taking within the Fifth Amendment. (See Missouri Pac. Ry. Co. v. State Of Nebraska, 164 U.S. 403, 416-17 (1896) [Order compelling a railroad company, against its will, to allow another company to build a grain elevator on its right of way was a taking under the Fifth Amendment.].)

Furthermore, it has never been considered a just or constitutional practice. In the case of Wilkinson v. Leland, 27 U.S. 627, 658 (1829), the Court stated:

“We know of no case, in which a legislative act to transfer the property of A. to B. without his consent, has ever been held a constitutional exercise of legislative power in any state in the union. On the contrary, it has been constantly resisted as inconsistent with just principles, by every judicial tribunal in which it has been attempted to be enforced”

(And see, also, Calder v. Bull, 3 U.S. (Dall.) 386, 388 (1798); and Kelo, et al. v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005), in accord.) In terms of Fifth Amendment analysis, forcing someone to pay over their money to a third party is an impermissible taking of private property for private use – and a denial of due process. (See Missouri Pac. Ry. Co., 164 U.S. at 417; Webb's Fabulous Pharmacies, Inc. v. Beckwith, 449 U.S. 155, 163-64 (1980).)

It is not surprising to me in the least that Senator Clinton flunked the Bar Examination for the District of Columbia. What is surprising is that she could consider this part of her plan to be in accord with “Democratic” principles. It is only “democratic” in the limited sense that Benjamin Franklin mean when he said, “Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for lunch.” It is not “Democratic” with regard to the respect that is demanded of the federal government by the Constitution for the property rights of every American Citizen. But, I suppose it goes without saying, in this regard too, that Socialists within the Democratic party have no respect for a man’s property.

We won’t have a government if she makes it into the White House. We will simply have an entity to beat the drums and drive us, the game, into the nets of the hunters (i.e. the insurance industry). That kind of tyranny should never be tolerated.

Hillary is right when she says Barack Obama betrays the principles of democrats. I personally believe that he is a trojan horse to the democratic party. Here are the reasons I believe this in an attempted chronological order:

1. Though Obama was raised in his early years by his mother , his conservative Grandmother a vice president of a bank took over his upbringing. It is my understanding this was an extrememly concervative upbringing.

2. He was a law professor at University of Chicago, unless he was just there (naive) becuase he wanted to be a black man teaching at The University of Chicago, the University of Chicago has notoriously been known for fueling the current conservative movement. I read an article about a year ago discussing how activist the leaders of the University were in the conservative movement.
3. A pathological committment to abortions I know that this is a democratic issue but when the world knows that knocking a baby in the head, sucking it out and murdering them at the sixth month in the womb is wrong and he supports this practice as a religion. In his home state of Chicago Democrats and Republicans were only able to outlaw this practice once Obama left office as a state representative, this practice has now been confirmed to be illegal by the supreme court. I have often wondered about his slavish devotion to third term abortion and I have come to the conclusion that he has thrown a significant amount of babies in the trash can that belonged to him. For me this slavish dedication to third term abortion makes him appear to be a Hybrid deviation of a conservative,Hitler like and a brown Nazi fascist racist. I personally believe he is committed to abortion because he wants to rid the world of poor, black, and brown, babies.
4) Several newspapers have written about his relationship with investment and banking firms and how he has received money from this lobby in the past.
5) The condition of his own backyard inner city Chicago with a drop out rate of 50%, I would think that someone who wanted to be President would want to solve this problem.
6) Finally in the Presidential Debate, Obama was the only candidate who had not sent their children to public schools.

Obama is not a democrat, the only reason he's running as a democratic candidate is because he is not as intelligent as the average black republican. ex. In terms of raw intelligence who do you think is smarter Obama or Condeleeza Rice. I think we know the answer to that.

Of course we want universal health insurance coverage for everyone. Do you really think you will get it without a MANDATE--a MANDATE to every business to provide it; a MANDATE to help those who can't afford it to get it. Clinton has repeatedly said it would be made affordable to those who could not afford it. Why get hung up on the word MANDATE and give it a negative connotation? We really should be hung up on the fact that Obama's healthcare plan leaves millions uncovered. Unless, of course, that is what you want---millions left uncovered.

Senator Obama's health care plan is smarter and will be more effective in covering people's needs than Clinton's will be - rather than force people to buy insurance they cannot afford, his plan first makes insurance affordable. after that stage plays out, he has said he will consider a mandate. But you can't put the cart before the horse - insurance here costs more than anywhere else and needs to be made more affordable.

Senator Clinton's attacks on Senator Obama are in very poor taste. In the past few days, Senator Clinton's campaign has asserted a number of claims that are flatly wrong. This will backfire - voters will become tired of being mislead. Senator Obama has my vote not only because his policies are the smartest, but because he was the most honest in winning it.

Oh please, Ms Clinton, explain to us what Democratic principles are?

I might have understood that expression in about 1960, but today it rings hollow and meaningless.

The Democratic Party today resembles a winter-blasted grape on the vine.

Once plump and robust, today a dried hull with no juice.

The only thing giving the party any respectability today is the existence of the Republican Party, an institution which could often be confused with an Aryan militia.

Gee, is this the only song Clinton can sing now? This health care stuff? Seems to me she still feels guilty about her and Bill's failed plan of the past. And she accused Barack Obama of betraying Democratic principles? What the heck is she talking about? Finally, Obama, the new, fresh voice of democracy. She wishes she could ride on his true democratic principles because she doesn't display any.

The reason Hillary's now talking up healthcare is that she's trying desperately to change the topic from her vast foreign policy experience, which is laughable.

Has anyone noticed that as soon as Obama and others began asking legitimate questions about her “experience”, she changed the subject?

Seems that, on the “experience” score, the lady’s been found out, or at least she’s beginning to be.

Is Hillary going to come to everyone's house and arrest them if they can't produce an insurance card? Will she issue fines at the hospital to anyone who tries to use emergency services who doesn't have insurance? Notice the phrase "employer assistance." That's code for "business tax."

It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate. However, even though any may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where torturing people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKK or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKK and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg. Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.

Hillary Clinton's plan is almost identical to the health care plan that Massachusetts has just switched to. Purchasing health care in this state is now required...or else. It's a disaster. They promised that insurance rates would be lower for all residents, however, as a result of this new plan, my insurance premiums have increased...from $650.00 to $725.00-- PER MONTH! And Ms. Clinton wants to MANDATE that I buy this insurance?

Seems to me the only ones benefiting from Hillary's Health Care Proposal are the insurance companies who now are guaranteed full enrollment in outrageously priced insurance plans.

A disaster.

Obamas plan to actually lower the costs of insurance coverage so that all Americans can afford to purchase insurance is the only way the American people will be the beneficiaries-- and not the insurance companies.

Barrack Obama: In His Own Words................
"There were enough of us on campus to constitute a tribe, and when it came to hanging out many of us chose to function like a tribe, staying close together, traveling in packs," he wrote. "It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."

He added: "To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists."

Obama said he and other blacks were careful not to second-guess their own racial identity in front of whites.

"To admit our doubt and confusion to whites, to open up our psyches to general examination by those who had caused so much of the damage in the first place, seemed ludicrous, itself an expression of self-hatred," he wrote.

In the period from high school in Hawaii, to Columbia University and then to the streets of Chicago as a community organizer, Obama is the classic angry young black man, describing his world thusly:

"We were always playing on the white man's court -- by the white man's rules. If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had the power and you didn't. The only thing you could choose was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage."

Obama once described the white race as “that ghostly figure that haunted black dreams.”

“That hate hadn't gone away,” he wrote, blaming “white people -- some cruel, some ignorant, sometimes a single face, sometimes just a faceless image of a system claiming power over our lives.”

During college, Obama disapproved of what he called other "half-breeds" who gravitated toward whites instead of blacks. And yet after college, he once fell in love with a white woman, only to push her away when he concluded he would have to assimilate into her world, not the other way around. He later married a black woman.

Obama’s book is primarily about his rejection of his supportive white maternal extended family in favor of his unknown black paternal extended family.

At age 33, he wrote in "Dreams from My Father, that " he found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against his mother’s race.

Obama vowed that he would "never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela."

In his memoir, "Dreams of My Father," Obama writes of a story in Life magazine that influenced him -- about a black man trying to bleach his skin white. No such article could be found in Life or Ebony.
