by Rick Pearson

NEVADA, Iowa—Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton declared herself "by far" the most electable candidate for the White House among those in her party, citing a history of tempestuous dealings with Republican critics.

The New York senator, who has made "experience" a theme of her campaign in challenging the credentials of first-term Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, also said she doesn't take the GOP criticism personally.

"You know people talk about who can be elected and all that. But I believe I am by far the most electable Democrat, because I know exactly what I am getting into. I've got no illusions and there are no surprises and I am 100 percent ready," Clinton told a crowd of about 300 people at a community center in the north-central Iowa community of Nevada.

"I think my political experience of having been on the receiving end of so much incoming fire over the years equips me for understanding you don't take this personally. You can't take it personally," she said.

The former first lady said Republicans are welcome to continue to try to make her a polarizing figure.

"I drive the Republicans crazy because they've spent hundreds of millions of dollars attacking and defaming me," she said. "I don't care. I mean, if that's how they want to spend their time and their money, let them do it. Ultimately, I trust the American people."

Clinton, who had a day full of stops in Iowa, was more than 40 minutes late to the late-afternoon Nevada, Iowa, appearance. She apologized for speaking too long at her previous stop and promised not to do it again.

But about a half-hour through her one-hour visit to Nevada, she began to lose her voice and took some sips from a glass of water. After drinking the water, she had a bit of a coughing fit that gave her a hoarse-sounding throat and teary eyes until an aide handed her a lozenge.

"Anybody want to talk?" she asked the audience as she regained her voice. "Iowans have a lot to say."

The fact that 50% of the country has said they would not ever vote for Hillary is, to me, proof that the "right wing conspiracy" she talks about, has won.

Hillary would be the easiest for the republicans to beat.

That's right, Mrs. Clinton...the fact that you have "experience of having been on the receiving end of so much incoming fire over the years" and that you"I drive the Republicans crazy" certainly shows that you won't be a galvanizing force for Republicans in a General Election. How can she claim that she's less polarizing than say, Barack Obama, and then talk about how the Republican Attack Machine is always out to get her?

Well, what else do you expect her to say about herself? I mean, any candidate that doesn't say to him/her self "I am the right person for the job, and none of the others don't cut it" - shouldn't be running for president anyway.

Julie you forgot, Obama said that polls don't matter. Oh yeah only when it concerns him. I think she is electable...by far electable...no comment. Though, I'll give it to her that she can stand up to the Republican CDS--Clinton Derangement Syndrome. Time and time again.

I think a republican candidate would slander his own mom if he thought it would get him elected. Moderates are what the democrats need to push for. I think both Hillary and Barack are great candidates, and would make excellent presidents!!!

Alberto,

If you think Barrack and Alberto are moderates, I have a bridge to sell you.

The moderates in the race are Gulliani and Romney (contrary to how they are running in the primary), otherwise they never would have been elected to the offices they held.

Mrs. Clinton cites her "political experience." What? Assailing Bill's women sexual harassment accusers as "bimbo eruptions;" directing her staff to have over 1,000 secret FBI files of political opponents; of firing the White House travel office people to help a political supporter who happened to be Bill's cousin; her assembling of a secret political process to develop a health care plan that was admitted by all to be a disaster; her acceptance of campaign funds from convicted felons...and the list goes on. Does anyone really want to repeat the sleaze years of the Clintons?

Who's Alberto???

The Queen B is about the least experience candidate for president this country has ever seen. But I'm glad to see she is still infatuated with this "right wing conspiracy" nonsense.

Alberto,

Make that Barack and Hillary.

No wonder I'm supporting Hillary Clinton. And when I get out of jail, I'll funnel even more illegal campaign donations her way!

Terry: so they're lying to get elected/win the primary? what are they, changlings? you'd better check on that bridge, looks like you've paid for it already.

Shaniqua: I'd MUCH rather have the sleaze years of Clintons back than the disaster that has befallen this country for the past 7 years. A sleazy president I can handle. A can't-admit-a-wrong my-way-or-they-highway presidint, I got a problem with.

What on Earth could Hillary/Bill say other than she is the most electable person. After we get treated by the media to countless more clips of Bill reaching all over Monica, his First Mistress, to shake hands of supporters, I think the Democrats will come to their senses and realize that the Clinton's day has come and gone and that a weary nation is ready to move on in a more positive direction now. Thanks Hillary/Bill for putting up a credible fight. The great right wing conspirators have not gone away and they still have plenty of money and time to play the kind of games that you have informed us you have plenty of experience with.

One thing though, Hillary/Bill you should have learned at Wellesley, and Bill should have taught you, is that girls cannot win in pissing contests with boys, something that you have been ill-advised to do. Your poo pooing Barack's claim that he, as a ten year old has more experience than you, didn't even merit a response. It help to add credence to the possibility that his experience means something greater than that of a devoted wife who looks the other way while her husband sneaks around with other women. You should have left that turkey and people would have more respect for you.

By far, the easiest to beat will be the cocaine-sniffing, holier-than-thou dirty politician, hypocrite and liar that is Barack Obama.

jack

It isn't about sleaze buddy. I would much rather have the last 7 "I had to deal with a mess" Bush years than the 8 "It's good to be the king" Clinton years that utterly failed to deal with any foreign policy or economic crisis.

Alberto,

I can sort of (not really) agree with you on that.

Not on Rudy who I think is a scumbag, but on Romney who I think is the best the republicans have to offer. He is a bit of a pander-bear though. One could even say a flip-flopper. Not as scary as Mr 9-11. Now on to frying smaller fish.

Just when you thought John (defender of corrupt GOP cowards) Dyslin might have turned the corner toward sanity...see below.

jack:

Hello?!? The '08 election isn't about a choice between a new candidate and George W. Bush. Duh'bya isn't running this time. So take a deep breath and relax.

The election is between the candidates running for president. So, really, you have a lot more to choose from than simply "the sleasze years of Clintons" versus Duh'bya. Unlike you, I will not be satisfied with someone merely because they are somehow better than Duh'bya. We can do a lot better than that. We have to.

Alberto, er John E., nice link there to one of your loony left wing blog sites. Journalists tend to be more conservsative than the general public?? Yeah, only in the surreal alternative reality world that is the Loony Left.

Nice to see you keep googling my name though. Do you Loons on the Left have such pitiful and boring lives that much of your demented and deranged energy is spent on me???

She's got a good shot. The Clintons have powerful allies in media and industry and her record suggests her election would be a great windfall for corporations reliant on subsidy and government contracts. I really don't like her politics - even to the point of seeing her as a continuation of the Bush/Clinton/Bush agenda of the last few decades - but I have to give her credit for her Machiavellian mastery of political deception.

It's good to see the republican machine on the attack against Hillary. Keep on thinking that. No need really to even reply to this since it's a sure thing she'll lose. Huh?

The '08 election isn't about a choice between a new candidate and George W. Bush.

I have to disagree with you on this John W., Many of the republican candidates running are nothing more than 4 more years of Bush. Rudy for sure is a clone.

I think Ms. Clinton is the least experienced of all of the candidates in both parties. This is her first and only elected public position and I don't see how she would have been elected Senator of NY if she had not been Pres. Clinton's wife. That being said, I also think she will say anything e.g., accuse Republican right wing attacks, etc., in an attempt to draw left wing support. Since she hasn't accomplished anything to talk about, she has to continually criticize others. Putting emotions aside, she is just not qualified to become President (but I also think that won't stop her).

Given the strange collection of candidates BOTH parties have put forward, Hillary Clinton has as good a claim as any of them to being the most electable and experienced candidate.

They ALL have skeletons in their closets. Be honest, people! Who doesn't?

Jim F

I couldn't agree more. What kind of experience do you get by being the first lady? Picking China?

Yes, Dj, some people even have closet skeletons that like to tap dance in airport bathrooms.

Jack: You write, "I'd much rather have the sleaze years of Clintons back than the disaster that has befallen this country for the past 7 years. A sleazy president I can handle." it sounds like you're admitting that a Hillary presidency would be sleazy, too. At least you're honest in proclaiming your standards for the office and confirming what so many people think.

Exactly. What. You. Are. Supposed. To. Believe. Until that 50% of the "country" has the single option of voting for her or for a Giuliani.

Amazing to me how many think Mrs. Clinton arrived at this point with only ex-Frist Lady and Senator to her credit. Anyone here check her real bio and not the nonsense created by Faux News?

I would prefer someone who initiated an overly ambitious health plan that failed over any politician who kills a bill to help children or fails to supply a fire department with radios so they can save their lives because of budget "constraints."

Getting real is tough to do. But somebody's gotta do it.

"POLE AFTER POLE AFTER POLE"

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO VOTES, IT ONLY MATTER WHO COUNTS THE VOTES!

I DON'T KNOW WHO IS COUNTING MY VOTE, I DON'T KNOW WHO IS COUNTING YOUR VOTE, BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T VOTED YET. DUH, DUH-DUH-DUH IS A VEHICLE MADE IN SOUTH KOREA, NOT AMERICA.

I DON'T KNOW WHEN YOU WERE POLLED LAST, BECAUSE I HAVEN'T PARTICIPATED IN NO STINKIN POLE.

NOW WE ALL KNOW THAT 50% OF MEN IN AMERICA ARE SO DOMINATE THAT THEY DON'T EVEN ALLOW THEIR WIVES TO THINK LET ALONE TAKE ACTION IN POLE QUESTIONS.

SO IF 49.4% OF THE POPULATION THAT VOTED FOR GEORGE BUSH AND DICK CHENEY LAW IN AMERICA, CAN YOU PLEASE LET MAMA OUT TO VOTE, SHE MIGHT JUST SURPRISE YOU WITH A WINNER, INSTEAD OF YOUR SICK TWISTED OF MANKIND THAT YOU JUST PUT INTO OFFICE FOR THE LAST 6 SATONIC YEARS IN AMERICA.

BLACK, WHITE, MEXICAN, ASIAN AMERICA FOR SURE PLEASE LET YOUR WIFE SPEAK!

LONG LIVE NANCY PELOSI!

I was amazed that her statement about having 35 years of public service was not challenged in last week’s democratic debate.

Is the national media actually going to accept without even a murmur of skepticism Hillary Clinton's claim to possess all the experience gained by her husband as president?

She’s been Mrs. Bill Clinton during that entire period, and if I recall correctly, her only election victory to date is from the idiots of New York state.

In the last debate, she suggested the nation's budget deficit, income inequality and lack of comprehensive health coverage also required a more experienced steward.

"We need a president who understands the magnitude and complexity of the challenges we face and has the strength and experience to address them from day one," she said.

If she actually was managing the national economy from 1993-2000 from her perch as wife of the president, let her release White House documents showing her active participation in such management.

My own wife has been married to a carpenter (that would be me) for over thirty years, but she can not frame a house, apply window casings, nor build a cabinet and I wouldn’t vote for her to do so.

A "PS" to my post.

For those who harp on the subject that "she" hasn't done anything, here are some mileposts from childhood through early First Lady-hood:

-Every possible Girl Scout badge.
-National Honor Society

-Valedictorian
-Member, board of editors of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action
-Provided legal advice for underprivileged and abused children at Yale-New Haven Hospital
-Interned with children’s advocate Marian Wright Edelman, received a grant to work at the Children’s Defense -Fund in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1970
-Worked for Senator Walter Mondale’s subcommittee on migrant workers during the summer of 1971.
-Studied new research on early childhood brain development at the Yale Child Study Center
-Worked at the city legal services providing free assistance to poor residents
-After graduating from Yale in 1973, began a year of post-graduate study on children and medicine at the Yale -Child Study Center, after having written her widely acknowledged thesis on children’s rights
-Staff attorney for the Children’s Defense Fund
-Recruited to serve on the presidential impeachment inquiry staff for the House of Representative’s Judiciary -Committee, investigating the Watergate Scandal
-University of Arkansas Law School faculty
-Appointed to the board of the Legal Services Corporation by President Jimmy Carter
-Chaired the Arkansas Education Standards Committee to improve the testing standards of new teachers
-Founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families
-Introduced Arkansas Home Instruction for Preschool Youth, a program that trained parents of preschool children in preparedness and literacy

-Named one of the 100 most influential attorneys in America by the National Law Journal in 1988 and 1991
-Initiated the Children’s Health Insurance Program in 1997

Remember Obama is Muslim. What are we gonna do then if we have one of them running this country. We are all screwed. Ladies better get your head wraps ready. I'm democrat but if I have a choice between Obama and a Republican I will vote Republican.

Hello, this is a really interesting blog, I'm glad I stumbled upon it. I understand where you're coming from but I really think you should check into Hillary Clinton. She's got some really good ideas.

Hillary simply frightens most of us, Republican or otherwise.

Cathy, Congratulations! You win the award for the silliest post of the day! Funny, we haven't seen Mrs. Obama wearing a "head wrap", but please do wrap your head if it'll keep the wind from whistling through your ears. According to Mr. Obama, he is a christian (United Church of Christ). He should know. We are all screwed when uninformed people vote. Try doing a little research before posting.

Perhaps Ms. Clinton spoke at an inopportune time on the topic of electability. The Zogby Poll rleased today indicates that she is in fact the least electable of the three leading Democrats.

I'd prefer substance to the horse race coverage, but if you are going to live by the horse race you better make sure you don't fade before the stretch run.

JAck,

All of the canidates run to the extremes for teh primary. The problem is the democrats don't have far to run. Hillary is probably the closest to the middle of any canidate, and we have seen she couldn't unite the country, so the other Marxists won't be able to either.

Hillary Clinton keeps saying that she is the most "elect-able" candidate. Well, she is entitled to her opinion and feeling. At a time like this, that may be good therapy for her.
However, the American people are increasingly, thinking, not another Clinton, especially, the most divisive one of them.

Voters should ask Hillary, what she accomplished in the common and public interest within the 8 years she was the First Lady in the White House. She and the "jackals" who did the DIRTY work for the Clinton political machine, used all of the 8 years to wage a campaign of misinformation to belittle and discredit poor women who allegedly, were sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton; fend off criminal investigations on travel-gate, whitewater affairs, File-gate, Futures Insider trading and other similar investigations.

I ask those who are supporting Hillary, especially, women: is this character your idea of a role model, whom you want in the White House?
