Conservatives target a once tax-happy Huckabee: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, has gotten into contests with Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, about who cut more taxes in their time.

That’s a strong currency in the campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination for president.

But the Club for Growth, a conservative, anti-tax organization that likes to target candidates it accuses of liberal and big-spending ideas, is having some fun today with videotape of Huckabee addressing the Arkansas assembly in May 2003 with an invitation to raise taxes – seemingly any tax – to fill a budgetary gap.

The Arkansas Journal, a conservative blog, is featuring that videotape, calling it “a far cry from the image of the Mr. Conservative candidate Huckabee is trying to create.’’

The social conservatives have warmed up to Huckabee, a Baptist minister. But it seems the fiscal conservatives are hot on his trail.

“Let me state what I’ve said privately as well as publicly…. I want to get it on the record again,’’ Huckabee is shown saying in the tape. “There is a lot of support for a tax at the wholesale level for tobacco. That’s fine with me. I will very happily sign that… Some have suggested the retail level of tobacco. If that ends up being your preference, I will accept that.

“Others have suggested a surcharge on the income tax.. That’s acceptable. I’m fine with that,’’ he says. “Others have suggested perhaps a sales tax.. That’s fine. Yet others have suggested a hybrid that would collect some money from any one or combination of those various ideas… If that’s the plan that the House and Senate agree upon, then you will have nothing but my profound thanks.’’

The state had overwhelming support for the tax increases listed here, and much like a conservative, he decided to go with the popular opinion rather than have the 'government knows best' and reject it.

The other taxes not listed in here that he raised were because the state Supreme Court ordered him to. Other than that, he lowered taxes over 90 times, the most for any governor in that state's history.

Something I'm sure that the Club won't mention in connection with this is that the Arkansas constitution requires a balanced budget. No running up huge deficits just to be able so say you cut taxes, like at the federal level or in other states.

Huckabbe is ok. Vote for him.

I love how this video doesn't show the before and after of the small part of this speech.
Huckabee did a great fiscally as governor. If you want to know the truth go to this article:

Hi, my name's Huckabee, and I'm for raising taxes on whatever you'd like! "That is fine with me."

Now let's go to "Hi, my name is Ron Paul, and I have ALWAYS voted against evey tax increases! And as president I will veto any unbalanced budget sent my way!"

Gee America, do you think it's time for a change?

Ron Paul for the WIN!

All these people trying to defend Huckabee...Hey Hickabee, here's an idea..why not try to cut SPENDING instead? Aren't you supposed to be a conservative? Sounds a lot like Bill Clinton up there!

I hope this guy gets the VP spot on the republican ticket. Hey Huckabee, still think the world is flat???

http://www.rudy-urbanlegend.com/

This guy is nothing more than a Republican Bill Clinton. Frankly, it's more than strange to hear so-called "conservatives" supporting that man.

Anyone but Huckabee!

Mike only raised taxes that were 1. popularly supported and 2. mandated by the supreme court. Huck has the most viable option for eliminating the ridiculous and illegal income tax - the fair tax, that allows Americans a choice of what they are taxed on based on their consumption choices. He is the most pro-life candidate - the all the way through life pro-life candidate, and he has the experience as a leader over a divided state that the red state/blue state united states needs today.

I can't wait for Ron Paul to lose so I can go back to reading political articles in piece.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I think it's really strange to see these so-called "conservatives" criticizing Huckabee because he raised taxes to balance the budget. When did deficit spending become a conservative principle?

Yeah, I hope you can go back and read political articles in PIECE. Well informed. Spectacularly so.

GIULIANI 2008!!!! HUCKABEE IS A COCKSUCKER!!!!

From what I have heard, the video clip in question followed a Supreme Court order to raise around 100 million dollars for education.

Also, people saying Huckabee should have cut spending should consider that cutting 100 million dollars in spending when your legislature is dominated by the corrupt Democratic machine is a pipe dream.

GIULIANI 2008!!!! HUCKABEE IS A C%CKS%CKER!!!!

I think you got that backwards Sean A. You also forgot cross-dresser!!!

You are screening for profanity????????? When a site stupes to such a level that it lets a low life post what are plainly offensive words, it loses me. So long!

The trend of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer is immoral, and must be reversed in order for our country to continue to be the leader of the free world. Mike Huckabee has what it takes to reverse that trend, and the "Club for Greed" is scared stiff. Let's make this a great country again by putting Mike Huckabee in the White House.

Huckabee cut taxes 94 times and confesses that he worries about a trade policy that encourages child labor overseas. I like a Conservative politician that can think and doesn't march lockstep with ANY organization just to win votes. Club for Growth represents a "one-way, leave your head at the door" club as far as I'm concerned.

Tax and spend, vain, typically fake, posturing, pandering, lying, cheating, scheming, backpeddling, waffling, anything-you-want-to-hear, flip-flopping, plastic banana politician. Most are except....

Dr NO! Ron Paul Baby..

Global Warming's a Scam too.

Time to face the facts, Huckabee is gaining...

As a Conservative I like the fact that he doesn't hem and haw about his views.

Guiliani, Romney and McCain are unacceptable to base Conservatives, Paul is the anti-thesis of what I believe. I'll never get a read on Thompson...

A United Republican party vs. Hilary or "thebreckgirl" I can't wait!

Huck backs the FairTax - this is enough to VOTE HUCKABEE!

Enacting the FairTax will be the greatest return of power to working Americans in almost over 90 years! How urgent is it that we scrap the tax code and theIRS? Play the Kotlikoff interview at Tax Foundation.

Huckabee is a socialist and authoritarian. I'm glad this information is starting to come out. There's lots more dirt on this evil guy who masquarades as a Christian saiint

Logic Prisoner:

Where did you get the strange idea that fundamentalist Christians believe the world is flat? It's not true.

When did deficit spending become a conservative principle?

Posted by: Tom O | November 12, 2007 6:29 PM

Never. What Duh'bya did isn't conservatism.

Hey Ron,
Huckabee did cut spending! Then he got saddled with tough national economic times and a court order for schools. 91% of the state budget is mandatory items, (education, medicare/medicaid, and prisons) many of which are federal unfunded mandates.
If you want the whole context of this speech, go to savetalkradio.com and look at his entire 2003 state of the state speech. This came 4 months before the speech this article is about, but it sets up the context. He's begging the state legislature to help cut offices, streamline agencies, consolidate schools, lots of conservative stuff. This guy was a responsible governor fixing a messed up state. He's no fiscal liberal. Anyone that wants to eliminate income, payroll, corporate, estate, investment, and alternative minimum taxes is NOT a fiscal liberal.
Go Huckabee!!!

Governor Huckabee is an outspoken proponent of the Fair Tax, the most progressive, people AND business friendly approach available. It would reap large benefits across the board for our country's economy. It would cut the Federal government and huge amounts of wasteful red tape. I'm a ficon and a socon, and I love Huckabee. He has a real depth that many are overlooking so far. The better he is really known and heard, the stronger his support will be among the voters.

Nice job of using a 1 minute video snippet! What was said before and after that 1 minute snippet? This is out-of-context and anybody with half a brain realizes that. Huckabee raised the road tax...yes, but after it was voted on by the Arkansas voters. We need to change the way taxes are done...there is so much fraud and corruption in the IRS method. The fair tax would simplify everything and would bring jobs back to this country (from Mexico,India,China etc). Imagine taking home your ENTIRE PAYCHECK...think about that for a minute!! If you earn $1000, you walk home with $1000...what a concept!!! This is the greatest idea...it was developed by leading economists (not Huckabee), who were charged with unshackling our economy from burdensome taxation. THIS WILL WORK...but the CORPORATE GREED on Wall Street will fight it because it "upsets" their little racket. Bring on the FAIR TAX and Mike Huckabee. Both are good for America.

Mike has this Dem crossing the aisle to vote republican.

I lived in Arkansas while he was governor, he did a pretty good job. I don't understand why all of the sudden a lot of half truths and outright lies (Max Brantley's latest piece in Salon) are being posted about the guy...

The reason that Christian conservatives haven't uniformly rushed to coronate the Huckster is that MOST of us actually have functional brains, and don't march in lockstep behind our ministers. We realize that a minister is simply someone who sees to the upkeep of the church and conducts worship services. The pastor works for the congregation, not the other way around; that many in the clergy and congregation get confused on this point does not alter the fact. Pastors are no less susceptible to corruption than parishioners. In fact, sometimes the temptations of power can lead to sins that most of the congregation would never even contemplate. Mixing the cloak of the clergy with the dagger of the state can sometimes be a dangerous combination for a character already prone to corruption (Stalin himself started out in the seminary).

Huckabee should be granted NO pass by Christians or anyone else, based solely on his public professions of faith. The Huckster needs to be carefully scrutinized based on his actions in office. I initially considered supporting Huck, but the deeper I dug, the more unbearable the stench became. Unfortunately, the similarities between Clinton and Huckabee are more than superficially biographical. Any "Christian" willing to look past Huckabee's easily verifiable record of corruption, hypocrisy, flop-flops, and lies doesn't take his faith as seriously as he pretends.

"Any "Christian" willing to look past Huckabee's easily verifiable record of corruption, hypocrisy, flop-flops, and lies doesn't take his faith as seriously as he pretends."

But if you vote for Guliani, you are pretty a saint, right?

And easily verifiable? I've followed Huckabee very indepth and can find no corruption, lies, and definitely no "Flop-flops" anywhere.

Huckabee is not only for the people, he's from the people.

Huckabee 2008!

Open-border politicians caught in downright lie? Mike Huckabee might have a chance like a very public servants if they tell the truth about the illegal alien invasion. Iif they enforce the laws that are currently on the books. Atleast he doesn't waffle like Sen. Hillary Clinton, or try misdirect voters questions. Like the facts about the border barrier, that from some internal sources indicates its not being built as funded and signed into law?

Grassfire.org Alliance

We have the "smoking gun" on why the government isn't
building the double-layered fence mandated by law.

Please read below and forward to your friends.

David,

As we reported to you last week, our government has built just five
miles of the 854 miles of double-layer border fence mandated by
the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

This outrageous fact begs a question...

Why? If the law mandated a double layer fence covering 854 miles,
then how come such little progress has been made?

+ + Border fence funding hoax of 2006 and 2007

Grassfire.org's research staff has blown the lid off a deceptive
and convoluted border fence funding sham being perpetrated on
the citizens of our nation.

Warning -- reading this report will enrage you. It will
infuriate you. Go here to access the full report:

http://www.grassfire.org/22042/offer.asp?rid=14336486

As you will see in this report, Congress and the Administration
are pretending to support a real border fence but then working
behind the scenes to ensure that the Secure Fence Act is never
really implemented.

It happened last year, and as I write, Congress is trying to repeat
its Border Fence Funding Hoax on us again! Here's how...

As you may know, last week an amendment providing $3 billion for
border security was stripped from the DOD appropriations bill.

We fully expect that bill to be added to the DHS funding bill
in the next few days. But even if they pass the $3 billion
funding amendment, DHS may not be required to use any of that
money for the border fence.

Not ONE DIME!

That's because of another amendment by Sen. Hutchison that says
DHS does not have to build the fence! Sen. Hutchison's staff told
us this amendment (also removed from DOD appropriations) will also
be re-attached to the DHS appropriations bill.

+ + Action Items: Help expose the Funding Hoax

David, I need your help to expose Congress’ Fence Funding
Hoax. We need to flood every House and Senate office with faxes
demanding action.

Specifically, we are calling for an amendment (or amendments) to
be added to the DHS appropriations bill to fully fund the
double-layer fence and directly tie that funding to the actual
building of the fence mandated by the Secure Fence Act.

I am asking you to take two actions today:

1. Send faxes to your Senators, your Congressman and other
key leaders exposing the Fence Funding Hoax Go here:

http://www.grassfire.org/22042/offer.asp?rid=14336486

(As always you can use our FaxFire system or send your own faxes.
All the information is provided at the above link.)

2. Call your Senators and Congressman today:

Sen. Lugar 202-224-4814
Sen. Bayh 202-224-5623

To reach your representative, call the House Switchboard:

202-221-3121.

Talking Points:

1. I am disappointed that Congress has not tied the border security
funding directly to the double-layer fence mandated by the Secure
Fence Act.

2. I call on Congress to reject any amendments (such as the
Hutchison Amendment, SA 3176 to H.R. 3222) that gives Homeland
Security total discretion over whether or not to build a
border fence.

3. I call on Congress to amend the DHS appropriations bill to
fully fund 854 miles of DOUBLE-LAYER fening and directly tie
such funding to the Secure Fence Act's two-layer fence mandate.

Again, please read our full report. You will be outraged when you
see how the "fix was in" last year even before the Senate voted on
the Secure Fence Act -- and how Congress is trying to repeat the
funding hoax this year.

The DHS appropriations bill is in House-Senate conference right
now and could move quickly.

Thank you for taking action.

Steve Elliott, President
Grassfire.org

We'll, Ryan, normally I'd advise you to do your own research, but since you missed my overt support for Dr. Paul (hint: it's in my screen name), I'll throw a few evidently needed bread crumbs on the Huckster's trail for you:
