Virginia Sen. Jim Webb sent a letter to President Bush today warning against any military action against Iran that lacks the explicit approval of Congress.
The letter, signed by 30 Democratic senators, emphasizes that a Senate amendment passed last month-- designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force as a terrorist organization-- ``should in no way be interpreted as a predicate for the use of military force in Iran."
Webb, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, has sought legislation that would prohibit funding for any military strike against Iran-- with limited exceptions-- unless Bush obtains the explicit approval of Congress.
The letter comes at a time when the Bush administration has sharpened its rhetoric on Iran and imposed economic sanctions on the Iranian government. Bush has warned publicly of risking ``World War III" if Iran gains the knowledge required to build a nuclear bomb.
``These comments are counterproductive and undermine efforts to resolve tensions with Iran through diplomacy," the senators wrote in their letter. ``We wish to emphasize that no congressional authority exists for unilateral military action against Iran."
American policy toward Iran has been a contentious issue in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and others have faulted Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for voting for the Senate amendment last month designating an arm of the Iranian government as a terrorist group. Critics warned the amendment could clear the way for a military strike. Clinton has defended her vote, saying it does nothing to authorize war.
Among the Democratic senators running for president, Clinton and Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., signed Webb's letter. Obama and Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., did not, according to a statement from Webb's office.

From McClatchy Newspapers:
At Least 430 Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans Have Committed Suicide
It’s time to change the count of American war dead upward.
The Associated Press has got hold of a preliminary government study on suicides by Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. According to the VA, at least 283 combat veterans who left the military between the start of the war in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 and the end of 2005 took their own lives. In addition, 147 troops have killed themselves in Iraq and Afghanistan since the wars began bringing the government count to 430.
The VA’s count is not a complete one, however. It does not include members of the military who returned from Iraq and then killed themselves before being discharged from the service – people like Sgt Brian Rand who shot himself in the head after returning home from his second tour.
It also doesn’t include the deaths of people like Sgt. James Dean who was shot by Maryland state troopers after he barricaded himself in his father’s farmhouse. Observers call those deaths “suicide by cop.”
And it doesn’t include the deaths of people like Sgt. Gerald Cassidy, a 32 year old Indiana National Guardsman, who died at Fort Knox five months after returning from Iraq with brain damage from a roadside bomb.
How many more American deaths continue to go uncounted?
Regardless, it’s clear is that we need to change our count of casualties upward from 4,229 US military deaths (3,842 in Iraq and 387 in Afghanistan) to closer to 5,000 – possibly more when you consider those deaths that still haven’t been counted.
....this is what happens when you let the Republican war machine break the military.

Like the horse isn't out of the barn on the coming Iran war.
Like Bush CARES what the Dems say now the resolution is passed.
The Dems are SO totally clueless and inept.

Talk is cheap. Put language in a "must pass" bill that specifically says the congress does not grant the president authority to attack Iran. They had it in one bill, but THEY REMOVED IT.
A cynic could almost believe the Democrats want to pretend to oppose militarism while running out the clock to the next election. Wake up Democrats. You are not guaranteed political victory unless you do what you were elected to do in 2006. Get us out of there.
Me? I'm voting for Ron Paul.

This coming from John E. who I can tell has no clue at all what the military is even about. In 1944 the USMC lost over 3000 men in less than 72 hours at Iwo Jima. When the US bombed Dresden, Germany in WWII it resulted in the death of over 100,000 civilians. You want to keep quoting "casualty" stats? Know this: the threat that is present in the Middle East is real, it isn't going away any time soon, and we ignore it at the risk of another 9/11...or worse.

I have to second Helena's comments. They gave Bush full permission to do whatever he wants as soon as Nancy took impeachment off the table.
And president Cheney got a good laugh at this recent posturing, which is good for his coal black heart.

That Iran is now in a crisis situation is entirely the mis-work of the Bush Administration. Iran was held in check strategically by Iraq, and if BushRumChen had done their homework decently, they'd have known it. Even having overthrown Iraq, they could have minimized the problem with rudimentary security on the weapons caches -- but, no, that would have been too much to handle and we let all that slip through our fingers meanstwhile ORDERING OUR TROOPS NOT TO INTERFERE when they WATCHED WEAPONS BEING STOLEN, when they watched people looting medical facilities and stealing samples of materials that now can be cultured for bio-hazard weapons, and when they knew about millions of dollars vanishing, to later fund terrorists. The vast majority of terrorists we're fighting in Iraq, Bush CREATED through his ineptitude and incompetence.
Following the 9/11 attacks, Iran cooperated with the United States, even if a lot of was lip service. Ahmadenijad was elected as the result of Bush's incursions into Iraq, and now we have him to contend with (for however longer remains to be seen).
Bush has continued for 4 years now to act counter to the reality of the situation in the middle east, not to mention counter to our own country's best interests, pandering instead to his idealized vision of what he imagined would happen. Iraq, as we continue to interfere, will NEVER be a unified country unless one of the factions there annihilates the other two. Do we fit our strategies to what's actually happening? Of course not -- there's NO civil war, the Iraqui people are just learning to work together, and we'll step down as soon as they step up. DO YOU SEE THE IRAQUIS STEPPING UP?
Get RID of this Administration and put somebody SANE in charge before it's just too late. Congress is absolutely right to flat-out smack Bush upside his head with refusing to cooperate with any more of his unilateral machinations. I just hope that Congress will find a spine when the time comes (another issue entirely).

This is liberal Democrat psychobabble. We need to be ready to go to war with Iran. You runocrats don't get it George W Bush has kept America safe through no fault or credit to the Democrat socialist party. We have not had a terrorist attack on our nation since 911 this isn't luck.
Jim Webb is a turncoat Republican turned Democrat he has as much crdibility as Jumpin Jim Jeffords.
Mark my words Webb will lose in Virginia the home of George Washington. The people of Virginia aren't stupid he pulled a trick on George Allen using that silly maccaw story picked up by the drivebys wanting a Republican turned Democrat to fit their liberal mantra.America is only safe with the strong GOP military activists in charge. The article is fine in its assessment but where due to growing factors, a global war in some highly powerful minds, may make perfect sense. I say this as the greatest threat to humanity is the population explosion and where a major global war would solve this problem. Indeed, there is a minority of humans with considerable wealth and power who see the destruction of others as the savoir of themselves (and their vast wealth it has to be said also). The late Glenn Seaborg(Element 106 Seaborgium) our founding President personally appealed and implored President Truman not to drop the 'bomb' on occupied Japanese territory. The President though through his military advisers took no notice even though he discovered Plutonium and was head of the Plutonium plant on the Manhattan Project. But behind the scenes also at the time, there were dark figures who saw that after the fall of Japan, great wealth could also be secured. These figures manipulate presidents and leaders to their own ends and basically again today, change-master politicians and governments in particular, are in the pocket of very rich and very powerful individuals/multinational companies, who seemingly do not look for peace but in many ways for wars and their own vested economic interests. Thinking that they can survive because they are on the strongest side and the reason why in many ways US$1.2 trillion per annum and growing, is spent on armaments now.
But getting back to humankind's greatest threat (even greater than that of even the warmongers it has to be said) is that of the ever-growing population problem and where I give a little evidence based facts that people may not be aware of.
The population of the world (in absolute numbers) has only to increase year-on-year by a mere 0.85% for there to be 12 billion people by 2075. The current population growth (in absolute numbers) is 1.27% (most recent UN figures), some 26% above the percentage increase for 12 billion humans to exist in 2075. But looking at the present rate of human growth, there would be 15.6 billion human inhabitants living on planet Earth in 67-years time. But again, as growth rates are, in statistical terms (not the best accurate measure by any means), slightly declining year-on-year, let us assume that the growth rate is the average of the two, which is 1.18%, then we would still have 14.7 billion people to support. In every scenario it is something that the world's resources could not possibly support considering rising standards of living throughout the world and where it is predicted that India alone will have over half-billion middle class citizens by 2025 (McKinsey, May 2007) on its present economic path. And a final point, what is happening with statistics is that they are being manipulated as usual. In this respect people say that population is declining statistically, but where in reality as we have a greater number each year for our base-line, the figures are really growing at the same rate as the year before, or close to that. It is a bit of a con job that governments in particular like to use so not to alarm their electorate.
Therefore overall looking at our bleak future in a world with vastly dwindling resources by the decade, a war may very well be on the cards for humankind in this century, and one where this time there will be no winners.
