The Swamp

by John McCormick

DES MOINES -- Pledging to "give 'em hell," former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards rallied several hundred supporters, his voice cracking at times from his near yelling, before the group headed together to the Jefferson Jackson dinner just a couple blocks away.

"I have been fighting this fight my entire life," he said. "I have walked into courtrooms for two decades by myself with an army of corporate lawyers arrayed on the other side. I didn't just walk into that courtroom again and again and again for children and families. I walked in that courtroom and I beat them and I beat them and I beat them and I beat them and I will beat them as president as the United States of America."

Edwards said he and his wife, Elizabeth, who is not here this evening, have "committed our lives to this fight and we are in it with our heart and soul."

Paulo, posting from Iraq again? No?!?!

Then shut your cake hole. Trial lawyers protect the Constitution and the 1st Amendment. We'll be happy to make fun of you more so come January 2009. Keep up the propaganda though. Nice try.

Weinerbrain, please tell us how trial lawyers protect the constitution and 1st Amendment. More than anything, trial lawyers do the exact opposite and weaken the U.S. rather than strengthen it.

Anyway, John Edwards a winner? He's a one-term senator who didn't run for re-election because he would have lost it. He ran for president and lost. He was the VP candidate of a ticket that lost. And he trails badly to two other lighweights in the Queen B and the Do-Nothing Obama.

weinerdog43:

Some trial lawyers protect the constitution, and the 1st Amendment in particular. But John Edwards wasn't one of them.

John Edwards was not a civil rights lawyer. He was an ambulance chaser. He tried cases for only one reason: to make obscene quantities of money for himself. If he wanted to be generous with the poor victims he represented, he could have taken a lot less than the 33 to 40 percent that trial lawyers get.

He took it because he is no social crusader. Don't kid yourself into thinking otherwise.

Edwards did very well at the Jefferson/Jackson dinner last night.

I thought it was very telling that Hilliary hugged everyone but Edwards (she gave him a handshake). LOL

Of course that is not surp rising considering Edwards has been the one candidate in the field that has Hilliary's number. Over and over again he has been able to identify major problems in her candidacy. That's the kind of candidate that we need to win in Novemember -- a candidate that is good at assessing his opposition and clearly articulating their problems in a way that sticks.

Here is the latest Edwards observation about Hilliary's campaign documented by MSNBC First Read column -

DES MOINES, IA -- Following an address to the Iowa Farmers Union, Edwards told reporters that Hillary Clinton took a page out of George Bush’s playbook when she answered a planted question in Newton on Tuesday.

“George Bush goes to events that are staged, where people are screened, where they’re only allowed to ask questions if the questions are favorable to George Bush and set up in his favor,” he said. “That’s not the way democracy works in Iowa, and that’s not the way it works in New Hampshire.”

And here:

“Let me tell you something: we had a Democratic president and a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate in the early 1990s, and we got something we didn’t need -- NAFTA -- and we didn’t get something we did need -- universal health care,” he told the raucous crowd of supporters. “And it’s because drug companies, insurance companies and their lobbyists stopped it. They killed it. Nothing will change if we trade a crowd of corporate Democrats for corporate Republicans.

I think Edwards is our best candidate to defeat the Republicans in Novemember.

I would love to see Edwards as Attorney General in an Obama administration.

John Edwards...is his wife dead yet?

John W., you are right on.

Mary, that was ridiculously harsh.

Edwards did forget to mention his battles for the honorable hedge fund Fortress. One of Fortress' favorite pastimes is buying up subprime mortgages and foreclosing on the owner. After being called on this, to his credit, Edwards did offer assistance to those in New Orleans who were facing foreclosure from Fortress. A noble effort, but somewhat similar to throwing someone in the water then jumping in to save them. I don't begrudge Edwards doing what he has to do to make himself wealthy, but I do think it is hypocritical for him to cast himself as a champion of the poor.

Never saw a Mary post here before. I suspect it's a Loony Lefter posting nonsense so folks on the Left can think Mary is a conservative and then attack us for such a ridiculous post.

Regardless of the reasons or the whom, for the life of me I cannot fathom how anyone could even consider posting such utter filth.

Mary, you are a horrendous human being. Wait, you're no human being at all. "John Edwards? Is his wife dead yet?" has got to be one of the most disgusting posts I've read in a long, long time. I hope your comment stays up for the country to see what a pathetic pig you are.

Politics doesn't have to be disgusting. We allow it to be, and some of us who have no decency at all (like Mary) help make it so.

Now, to my opinion. I thought Barack was very good at the JJ dinner...and then on MTP today I thought he got pummeled. Edwards faired much better on MTP. Hillary Clinton is way too decisive to win a general election in November. Obama's lack of experience isn't why he isn't a better candidate, I think he's too timid and lacks the guts to really fight for the American people. I feel that from day one, Edwards was the first to lay out bold ideas (granted all of his policies I'm not totally enamored with). That kind of courage and vision is what the Democratic Party needs.

I love the people on these sites calling John Edwards an ambulance chaser. If one of your kids died because of misconduct, you'd be the first person calling an "ambulance chaser" to make the corporate crooks pay for the life of your child. So spare me, and stop being such hypocritical morality monitors.

Mary = Paulo
