The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Al Gore slipped out the side door of the West Wing.

In his private Oval Office meeting with President Bush, the former vice president insisted that they had spoken about global warming "the whole time.'' It wasn't clear if the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, who shared the honor for his work on climtate change, was serious.

"Of course,'' they had spoken about global warming, Gore said, strolling down a rain-slick Pennsylvania Avenue with wife Tipper Gore after a private session with the president. For Gore, who had gone into the White House for a reception for the American winners of the 2007 Nobel Prizes, this was his first return to the Oval Office since leaving office.

But Gore, calling the meeting with Bush "very cordial'' and "substantive,'' declined to elaborate on their meeting. "I'm not going to do an interview here,'' Gore said in his walk down the streets outside the White House. "I don't want to comment more.''

This was the first private meeting of Gore and Bush since the Tennessee Democrat won more of the popular vote than Bush in the presidential election of 2000 but lost in the Electoral College – following a 36-day court fight over Bush’s disputed 537-vote margin in Florida.

This may have been a cordial reunion of erstwhile adversaries from a contested election, but it was kept discreetly private, within the confines of the Oval Office – where photographers and pool reporters arrived near the end for “a photo-opportunity.’’ The two appeared relaxed, smiling and in good moods, the pool reported.

Gore had come, along with the other American winners of the 2007 Nobel Prize, for an official reception by the president.

The president, who had personally telephoned Gore to invite him and arranged the date of the Nobel recognitions to fit Gore’s own travel schedule, also received the Democrat and wife Tipper Gore for a private session before the “photo-op’’ with Gore’s fellow Nobel laureates.

Gore shared the Nobel Peace Prize this year for his work fighting global warming, a cause that Bush has only reluctantly embraced – with the Bush administration lately acknowledging the role that humans play in global warming, but still opposing mandatory caps on polluting emissions.

Gore also has been outspoken in his criticism for other administration policies, most notably the war in Iraq.

The White House insists the president holds no ill will toward Gore, who carried his challenge of the outcome of the 2000 election to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t believe so,’’ Bush Press Secretary Dana Perino said of any “bad blood’’ between the two. “I know this president does not harbor any resentments. He never has.’’

The two had met one another publicly at the dedication of the Clinton presidential library in Arkansas, and both had attended the funeral of President Gerald Ford, but the White House said Monday’s meeting was the first opportunity they had to meet privately.

“The president didn’t make a calculated decision to invite Al Gore to the White House... He invited him because he’s one of the Nobel winners,’’ said Perino, pressed about the purpose of the additional private meeting. “I didn’t psychoanalyze the president to find out why… It was a presidential, gentlemanly thing to do.’’

I'm glad Bush won. I'm also glad he met Gore. Al is full of stuff, but he may be right on warming, and Bush needs to listen to him. This is not an issue for politics. It affects all of us. It was an encouraging sign.

i could shake the president for even standing in the same building as that overweight goofball Gore, the big pretender

A correction - Gore DID NOT win a majority of the popular vote. He won a plurality(49.7%). To win a majority, you must get more than 50%, which is what Bush did in 2004.

Two of the most boring and pathetic speakers on the face of the planet: one bleating about global warming and the other about fighting the terrorists. In either scenario the American public is getting screwed.

Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize for global warming is a joke. There is solid evidence of warming however, no solid evidence that it is caused by humans. The earth has warmed at times humans were not even present. It is cyclic and Mars is also warming. Hmm...maybe we are causing that too?

It is a cycle that we simply can not control. I don't see how the peace prize has anything to do with global warming. Makes me laugh. Nothing but more politics if you ask me.

Two great Americans ,meet, and talk.I fail to find anything wrong with that.It could be we need more of that interplay of thoughts and Ideas.Look at the congress, statesmanship does not exist there. The ratings show that..So lets stop playing the dumb game of "I GOTCHA!For in the end they got us!!

Major point, Gore had 48.4% of the popular vote in 2000 which is more than Clinton had in 1992. Neither Gore or Clinton ever had more than 50% of the popular vote. In 2004, President Bush was the first president to have more than 50% since his father in 1988.

Rumor has it that President Bush handed Gore a box of chads as a parting gift and said "You know you want to count them, go ahead..count them."

Al Gore is one of the greatest heroes and leaders of the 21st century. Ironically, Bush is one of the greatest failures and fools of the 21st century. Unfortunately, there's too many Americans that just don't understand the real challenges facing America and the world in this new century. Sure terrorism is bad, no doubt, but you're not going to die from it. According to the CIA World Fact Book only 50,000 people have died from terrorism since 1969. How many died in a single day during WWII? No, the average person is going to die of heart failure or cancer. It's their environment and the things they put into their body... the air, the water, the junk food, the meds... that will kill them. Too bad middle America just doesn't get this.

Gore denies election results. New Aggie Coach stays with current NFL team until season ends, thinking recruiting will go okay? Similarities?

Can Mr. Gore tell me what the right temp. is supposed to be at any one time on earth. Can he tell me why Greenland once had lush Green forest? Please let me know. Thanks, Greg

Global Warming is another way to give government more power and take away our freedom, And Al lost the election of 2000 because his own home state voted against him, if Bush had lost Tenn. Florida would never have even been an issue. Gores a phony go get back on your Gulfstream fly to your huge estate and leave us alone, and clean up that filty zinc mine poisoning the ground water on your own land!!!!!!!!

Are these comments reflective of the rest of the Mid-West? Seriously scary and undereducated statements that make us in CA want to leave the union....

"Two of the most boring and pathetic speakers on the face of the planet: one bleating about global warming and the other about fighting the terrorists. In either scenario the American public is getting screwed." LOL!!! Perfect!

Thank you, Russ, for succinctly expressing the facts, and the math, that the Olberman-like media will never be able to master. Issueless, boring, and enraged, the liberals just keep running against the guy who is not on the ballot. Go figure the amount of hate it takes to be so obsessed.

It's cave ins and sellouts like this that have cost Bush his support amongst his base. I can't wait for Bush to leave, he is too eager to compromise and give in to public opinion on too many issues instead of backing up the truth with evidence.

Two puppets, one puppeteer, and plenty of people in the audience rooting for one puppet or the other.

If Hillary gets elected next, that means four of our last four Presidents (out of 100 million U.S. adults) are from just TWO aristocratic families related to European royalty (just like Gore).

What are the odds?

Seriously. What ARE the odds?

Do you really think we choose our President?

How about "installed"?

We are so easy to dupe. We see two puppets "fighting" at the hands of a single puppeteer and then take sides.

What are the odds both Bush and Gore were "bonesmen" in the "Skull and Bones" fraternity at Yale?

Pretty astronomical.

But, don't worry. It's just a coincidence. It doesn't mean anything.

And don't worry about vote fraud. Our government would never do something like that.

They'd never lie to us.

Our votes are safe with Diebold. You can take that to the bank.

I agree with the previous poster. The UN has manipulated and advanced the global warming argument to the detriment of poverty alleviation in 3rd world countries.

Let's face facts; the data stating 1998 was the warmest year on record was flat out wrong; the "hockey stick" analysis showing a sharp rise in global temperatures was a complete fraud; there has been a downward trend in temperatures the last 5 years.

Meanwhile, the devastation created by hurricane katrina was implied to be a result of global warming. Does that mean the previous years of calm weather is also a cause of global warming?

Someone please show me some evidence that man is causing global warming? The UN should be ashamed.

Russ, I believe the point of the matter was that Gore had more popular votes than Bush, which would mean he won the popular vote.

I can't believe these comments.... Global warming IS real, and Bush's reason for attacking Iraq was not. Get over it Bushies.

We don't even know what is in the bottom of the oceans they are so deep. Our world is still a mystery. And it was scientists who used to prove that the world was flat, and that the sun and universe revolved around Earth. Maybe scientists should use the scientific method strictly and observe. Leave believing in theories and pushing them as fact to philosophers and religion. Global warming is propaganda, a religion based on fear. Al Gore is a glory hog and a joke. Can't he try helping people in the day-to-day, the poor, needy and uneducated, instead of scaring people into buying Ford hybrids?

Chawla-

You're glad Bush won? I'm not sure that makes any sense at all. Even a registered Republican like myself can surely recognize the gross incompetency of this administration.

Gore wins the Peace Prize? He's a traitor
Bush tries to protect America? He's a dictator.

Hatred: The Other American Past-Time

CORRECTION: Gore did not '[carry] his challenge of the outcome of the 2000 election to the Supreme Court".

The name of the case was "Bush v. Gore" because the Bush campaign took to the courts in an ultimately successful attempt to stop counting the votes in Florida.

This shows what a class act Bush is. After the horrible things that Gore has said about him, Bush still invites him to the White House and treats him with respect. This shows that the real adult won in 2000.

Can we be sure global warming is not influenced by human factors? Because if so, we need to get on the offensive. Otherwise, we're dealing with deception aimed at manipulating a lot of people. The Idea of global warming runs rampant though our culture. What needs to be done? How do we educate people about this? People need to be informed.

It is too bad that the majority of Democrats cannot base any political decisions on anything other than pure hatred for the President. His gentlemanly behavior clearly outclasses his political rivals.

Al Gore should not be "blamed" for accepting a Noble Peace Prize. He took it for the same reason they gave it. Who would not take it? It's obvious that the selection commitee selected him based on the increased world wide media coverage the Noble Organization would get by selecting the global warming celebrity of the moment. Not much to do with peace but congrats anyway.

George Bush is one guy with a heck of a lot of class.

The entire credible world wide scientific community has spoken in unity on multiple occasions about the role of humans in climate change. The data is inescapable and frankly obvious. Despite this, the conservative bloggers (see below) continue their campaign of misinformation about climate change at every opportunity. They continue to create doubt with the public by using this campaign of disinformation. Like the cigarette peddlers before them, they lurk around in the media of the day, posting this garbage.

It's no wonder that we elect such empty and evil leaders, in such a broken political system that caters only to the wealthy and spreads lies by giving weight to every crackpot with an opinion if it suits the political ends of those who have wealth.

Al Gore is one of the last great political minds. Realizing the futility of continuing to participate as a candidate in our broken system, he has decided to work as a private citizen to change it as an advocate. I hope the day will come again when real people, with substantive policy proposals willing to challenge the paid stooges and wealthy elite, can run for elected office.

Response to comments by Gene - If you are going to comment on global warming science please do the bare minimum and research the facts.

I fully agree that the climate system is incredibly complex and subject to natural variability. However your use of this point of fact is specious, and your willingness to cry "politics" is frankly hipocritical. Human activity is clearly changing the energetic balance of the climate system in ways that will fundamentally affect how friendly this planet is for our children. There is as much scientific consensus here as any subject will ever achieve. The time for debate is patently over, and at this point continuing the denial amounts to pure moral cowardice.

It is clear to me that An Inconvenient Truth has driven a major shift in public awareness on the issues of climate change and environmental sustainability. Through this documentary and his many related efforts in the political sphere Gore has made an important contribution towards ensuring the future of human civilization. He is deserving of the Nobel Prize and I fully support his continued leadership.

Bush and Gore are both egotistical and full of crap. It's only right that they should meet privately to compare notes. Soon, they'll both be has-been politicians.

Why are Conservatives so angry? Is it impossible to believe in something that is not proveable? You can't prove God exists, yet many believe. We can't prove that cigarettes cause cancer, but we can show that the probability increases by several magnitudes. Is the possiblity that 7 billion people could influence global climate so remote? I really believe that we need to at least acknowledge that the possibility exists, and we should plan to do something about it. Simply tying into energy conservation as a whole would be a good start.

PS - The climate is warming on Mars? Just so you know they are basing that little factoid on about 30 years worth of data. Global climate change is based on about 2000 years worth of data. Also I think a global effort to save our way of life, which Gore is trying to do, is worth a Noble Prize. Hes accomplished this through an awareness campaign, not war or strong arm tactics. Hes gotten the conservatives on this page talking about climate change, and that in itself is quite an accomplishment.

Al Gore is a spiteful, full of hate, hypocrit. George Bush was an idoit for inviting him to the White House. When is going to learn that turning his cheek to these leftist socialist that the only thing he is going to get is fist upside his jaw.

Gore is insane. He is a liar and opportunist who is attempting to con the public into something that is NOT even real. Gore flies all over the world promoting global warming while chewing up more energy than most anyone. Plus he is neck deep in Occidental petroleum!

Gore's hypocrisy is second only to Hillary Clinton's!

His scary movie is like Michael Moore's, full of holes, and massive deception.

Remember that Gore tried to steal the presidency with lies using lawyers from his party, including Chicago Mayor Daley' brother who is corrupt to the hilt!

It's actually elementary...both use doom and gloom to scare the public into thinking things are worse then they really are. Terrorism is a concern, but if I hear "terra" come out of Bush's lips as an excuse for anything he does wrong I'm going to scream. Al Gore uses global warming the same, where it's not as bad as he predicts, it's a concern, but he scares people into believing his way.

What is sad is that these gents are the kind of people we have to choose from to lead our country.

WOW, The Flat Earth and Special INterest employees have flocked here.

Chawla | November 26, 2007 4:21 PM

Correction, W didn't win, he was installed by the Supreme Court in their (and our countries) first Coup.

AND Al Gore DID win the POPULAR VOTE by a plurality.

"A plurality, relative majority or simple majority is the largest share of something,"

AND...if someone is still declaring they are happy Bush is in the White House, sssshhhhhhhh, don't say that too loud. If you're not party of the Special INterestest that are making money claw over hoof, they may take you away for psycological evaluation.

Such jealous people. Sure doesn't do your soul good. The truth shall set you free and it sure seems you all need it.

Mr. Gore's intellect, vision and unmatchable experience has helped our country in so many ways in the past and long in to the future. Yes, he has been correct about everything. From Social Security, the War, health Care, Our Rights and the Constitutional Crisis and his decades long work on the environment, global warming and energy.

Sour grapes only makes your face look funny.

Why is it so difficult for those with hatred in their hearts to appreciate the service and dignity of Gore and Bush, both of whom have dedicated so much of their lives to their nation. And wouldn't the Democratic party be so much better off to have Gore as its candidate instead of the pretenders that are running? Gore had the good sense to shun both Clintons in his quest; he wanted nothing to do with the sleaze factor they brought to the White House, proving that he is a man of principle.

bush deserves NO less than saddam... a 3 foot rope with a 12 foot drop.

Joseph, I rather doubt that you are a registered Republican. More likely, another sham liberal trying to pull a fast one.

Here is a nice cartoon of Gore and Bush meeting at the White House:

http://www.cnn.com/exchange/blogs/warpCNN/

You all sound so out of touch with your comments about how global warming is made up, and utterly clueless in interpreting Bush's invitation to Gore as anything other than perfunctory and expected. It is neither a sign of his "caving" to an old enemy or ideology, nor a sign of his "class"—it's simply what ANY president would do. "Gentlemanly!" What a joke. I love the comment about how Democrats base everything on hatred of Bush...yet all these comments here seem to be based on hatred of Democrats (Keith O, Al G). You're running scared because you're going to lose in 2008—across the board—on your way to a political extinction that pre-Bush meltdown was unimaginable. Republicans are the next Whigs—consider yourselves already flipped.

I just THANK GOD that the great state of Tennessee had enough sense to send that "Clinton clone" to the ash heap. If East Tennessee hadn't voted ALL RED (except for the meth-lab infested Campbell Cty) in 2000, Gore would have won. How rare is this? Well, even in 1984, Mondale won his homestate of MN as a solitary victory. Thanks East TN!

LOL , the tennesse two by four, "i am a mechanical boy.., just a mechanical toy.." jesus , ive done more for world peace than that tobacco farmer has

You people in California should leave the union and keep all the hippies and illegals. Fight your fake fights, and quit screwing with the rest of America. Global warming is a scam.

It's amazing that liberals want everything to change except the temperature.

This whole global warming scam is an attempt for Gore to give himself a legacy and go down in history as a hero. Well now he has legacy but it will prove him to be the fool of the century.

Very nice to see that both President Bush and Mr. Gore comported themselves in such a dignified, gentlemanly manner. Whether you agree or disagree with either, well done to both!

The Democrat news media steadfastly refuse to report that Gore is PROFITING from his global warming scam by conning people into buying "carbon credits." Gore is the FOUNDER and PRINCIPLE SHAREHOLDER of the foremost carbon credit company. So, the more people buy into the global warming myth, the more money he makes. But the news media and the rest of the left-wing elite intelligentsia are so invested in their global warming religion that they dare not divulge information that would serve to discredit their messiah, Gore.

I commend Gore and Bush for acting civilized with each other. It would be nice if political opponents in forums like this one could set the same example.

Well, Gene, you're obviously in denial, like Bush and all the other conservatives. They used to say there was no solid evidence for warming. It was all due to oversampling of the urban heat island. They were wrong. The heat island can't explain the warming. Then they said the MSU data conflicts with the models' tropospheric predictions (while also confirming stratospheric predictions). They were wrong about that too. The MSU data was misinterprted. Now people like you are desperately clinging to some mysterious "natural cycle" as an explanation for the warming we've undoubtedly caused. Why don't you share you data with the best scientists in the world? I'm sure they'd love to hear about your cycle and how you found it. In the meantime, I'd say the burden of proof is on you to explain how a 30% increase in CO2 could possibly *not* increase global temperature.

George Bush is a liar and an embarrassment to America.

“I know this president does not harbor any resentments. He never has.’’

Such utter and complete BS. If they are talking, they are lying. Plain and simple.

It's a shame that Bush should have to invite a nut like Gore to the White House on account of his winning the nobel prize. That prize is something that people respect, usually for good reason. But now it's been awarded to someone who's "saving the world" from something for which there is as much scientific evidence as a planned alien invasion from pluto.

I like how Mark Silva says "reluctantly embaced" in regards to Bush and global warming. Doesn't Bush's private home in Crawford, TX have an extremely small carbon footprint compared to Gore's Tennesee mansion? No mention in this article. Typical Chicago Tribune left bias. When will Gore meet the press and answer serious question about his movement asked by legit scientists? I think Gore is a decent man, and I think Global Warming is something to be addressed. But I don't want him to use this issue falsly to create "Ill Got Gains". I also think Gore is a patriot, and would much rather see him leading the Dems for nomination then Hillary, who is only power hungry and could care less about the American people.

Why did we have an ice age merely 10,000 years ago? a blip in the history of the earth? Our earth does its thing no matter our actions. I'm all for finding alternatives for Oil but lets not spend ourselves into oblivion chasing Al Gores ghosts....

Interestingly enough, on the day Gore visits the WH for the first time since the supremely arranged coup d'etat, Cheney finds himself all a flutter and choked up at GWU hospital.
Hey, you never know.

Reading these comments is causing global warming in my office. But I cannot open the window to cool down, because it is freezing outside. Thank you AlGore for staying on the frontpage and causing world peace to spread.

I must be dreaming...People posting here talk about Bush's class????? He is a world class murderer. Over 1,000,000 Iraqis now dead; most civilians...Hitler would be proud of this classy Amerikan

James, I believe we don't actually know who won the popular vote. Most states don't count absentee ballots unless the number of absentee ballots exceeds the margin of the leader in the state. Even when they are counted the counting stops when the margin exceeds the remaining uncounted ballots. Do you know for a fact that the overall margin Gore enjoyed across all states exceeded the number of uncounted absentee ballots?

Neither do I.

Bush has a lot of class, no matter what some of you wing nuts think.

As for Gore, the same cannot be said. This is a man who called the President a traitor ("He betrayed this country! He played on our fears!!")

Poor Al. Is anyone willing to bet me that in 10 - 15 years, Al Gore's take on the causes of global warming will end up in the same place as his take on who invented the internet. The man is a psychological mess.

I broke out in a nervous twitch whenever I so much as thought Al Gore as President. After the performance of the Bush team, I no longer hold those feelings. Taxes could be higher under Gore but its hard to see him doing any worse. Only Nixon could go to China, only George Bush could bankrupt the USA. At least Gore would have spend some of the money on reducing oil dependence and cutting global warming. In the future we will have to fight for our share of foreign oil with the Chinese and everyone else that has all our money. Raking my leaves after Thanksgiving was a big pain a full month later than usual this year. At some point you have to wonder when nature will solve our problems with war, famine pestilance and disease to teach us a lesson.

Bush won and Gore lost in 2004...end of story. The Dems need to stop crying in their beers!!!!

The meeting was "cordial and substantive" because of George Bush, not Al Gore. Gore's public verbal assaults on GWB are well known and shows his lack of character.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....

Embarrasing day for the Bush 24% crowd:

Gore = Popular
Bush = Not so much

Gore steps into the belly of the Neocon beast and makes a cogent, well thought out statement that encapsulates the complete disregard for life on Earth that has been the hallmark of the Bush regime and the cameras are immediately shut down as Gore is quickly removed from view.

Bush is a gentleman and is presidential. After all of the screaming and insults that Gore has thrown at Bush I think this illustrates pretty clearly the difference between a liberal and a conservative. I also find it curious that so many sheeple have taken Gore's word regarding this psuedo-threat of global warming. Anyone remember the liberal concocted global-cooling (ice-age) that they threatened during the late 70's?

Wow, we mid-westerners didn't know the internet went all the way to CA Brent. And we were not aware that statements could be undereducated either. Hope the CAfonians don't want to leave the union.... they're the smart ones.

George Bush with class? Do you mean the same guy who refers to a major European head of state as "Yo, Blair?" The same guy who stumbles over his words and suggest that the Queen of England is over 200 years old, then winks at her infront of everybody? The same guy who talks with food in his mouth at the UN, and swears to other heads of state (when the mike is unknowingly left on)?

If Bush is classy, then I can't wait to ride the next pig to the moon.

Wooden cigarstore Indian Al Gore is an opportunist who found a normal and natural climatic issue and marketed the hell out of it. This guy is a phony and it is sad how gulible the public is. Gore is nothing but a snake-oil salesman.

HEY REX your comments>>

Sure terrorism is bad, no doubt, but you're not going to die from it.

ARE U FOR REAL!!what a stupid statement! terrorism is not going to kill us tell that to the 3,000 who died on 9-11..if the US is destroyed by terrorism where does that leave the environment?

James H.

Gore LOST, get over it. The rules were established a long time ago. Popular vote means squat. It's the Electoral Vote that counts. I can't even begin to imagine the terrible trouble we would be in if Gore had been President instead of Bush.

So global warming is REAL?? You of course can prove this without "cooking" the numbers like NASA did, correct?.

But then again if you believe Gore won the election I can see how you can buy into the Global warming myth.

You can cool off by drinking more Kool-Aid.

!!!!!!!!!!!! The UN manipulates the US government and other governments around the world who go for their world peace BS which is really world socialism. Our government manipulates us (the people). We now hate each other. United we stand, divided we fall folks. THIS IS FOR REAL. GET WITH IT! Bush sucks, Hillary sucks, Cheney and Libby and Carl Rove suck ass too!
Rumsfeld...whew! What a nightmare! Reid, Pelosi, Shumer, blah blah and most of congress. They all suck at doing their jobs so lets clean house and get some fresh faces in there that will do the job right. We have to stop allowing these politicians to manipulate us with lies and propaganda via the media. Unfortunately, that will NEVER happen all thanks to the universities indoctrinating the youth before they even have a chance. It's already too late for this and the next generations. Probably you...that's right you have been taught the "Agenda" instead of reality. So now what are you teaching your kids? This goes waaaaaaaaaay back before George Bush was even a wet dream. How about the fact that our state department was infiltrated by Communists back in the 50s. Yeah I know...I'm crazy right? Whoo-hoo loonbag alert! How about the fact that Kennedy was killed by Communist Russia. Yep, here we go again into loonville! How about some big names that no one remembers anymore who are still big players in Politics, Mafia, Big Business and BIG money. Names such as Kennedy...yep, still around. Rockefeller is another good one. There is also as of lately, Clinton and of course we all know Bush. Now, we are thinking about electing another Clinton? What's next?! Chelsea Clinton? Maybe Jeb Bush or Jenna Bush yeah!! We could have a whole 4 generations + of Clinton/Bush! I know the media would love that! They might actually make it happen. Have you ever watched the movie "The Running Man"? We are getting close.

Uhhh, last I checked, the popular vote does not, never has and never will win an election. In fact, there is no such thing as the popular vote in a U.S. election, at all - so what relevance does it have being mentioned in this pro-gore article, anyway?

For the record - clinton won in 1992 with less than 40% of the "popular vote"!!

BTW: did anyone ask gore if all of the nobel attendees all flew in on separate private jets to the White House??

The elected one came 'round to visit the selected one. Makes you proud to be a Busharaguan.

these pro-Bush comments are scary-do these people only watch Fox News and listen to Rush? They really need to get out more-have they forgotten that probably a few million people would still be alive if he hadn't rigged the election? and he's not done yet-I don't mean just the war-infant mortality is up, people dying because of Katrina incompetence, and I could go on ad nauseum-Killers aren't classy people.

James H - there is no such validity in U.S. elections for the term "popular vote". When is the last time anyone in the U.S. was elected via a "popular vote"? - not relevant, moron, get past 2000.

Nice going Mr. President and Mr. Vice President. Two class gentlemen who set an example for the rest of Washington with their demeanor and deportment. It's time to draft Gore for president before it's too late with Hillary. This country can't take another four years of Clinton scandals.

I guess it was OK that the 2 could have a yak session. I'm sure nothing will come of it...except us yammering on about it.

My question is this: How do we KNOW it is not the Sun that has heated up a degree or two and that the whole universe is warming? The arrogance of mankind...personkind for those PC nutz...that we are able to manipulate the planet to that extent amazes me. But then, I get amazed pretty easily these days.

jonesey

Bush was elected and reelected for the simple fact that he related and still relates more to the common man/woman in America. Is his family rich? Of course. Name me a president (besides the idiot peanut farmer) that hasn't had a LOT of money before winning the election. Fact is, it takes money to run an campaign. I've seen that man shed real tears and show emotion that cannot be faked. He has more emotion than Gore will ever have. Lastly, does anyone think that we would not be in Iraq if there was a democrat in office? We would've been there NO MATTER who was in office. It's just easier to complain about Bush than see the real problems in the world.

W has a lot of class.

Amen.

Lefties don't understand the inherent decency and restraint that makes us right wingers.

Moreover, lefties don't understand that the seeming passivity of the right is just the mailed fist cocking.

Chawla-

You're glad Bush won? I'm not sure that makes any sense at all. Even a registered Republican like myself can surely recognize the gross incompetency of this administration.

Yo Joseph,
You're as much a Republican as I am Clinton supporter. NOT! I'd vote for GWB again and we be beter for it!

Last note: Why do you libs hate America so much?? If you really hate America that much move out.

MK

His gentlemanly behavior clearly outclasses his political rivals.

Bush doesn't talk unless it's scripted. As for personal attacks, he has his henchman and henchwomen do it for him.

I live in washington state where we republicans know very well how deomocrats will keep recounting the ballots until they get what they want. That is why we have a Democrat governor, Christine Gregwire, who stole the ellection from Dino Rossi. Rossi won but the Democrats stole the ellection by counting and recounting multiple times. It took them 3 times before they finally got what they wanted. All the while people involved in the counting would call the radio talk shows to tell about first hand voter fraud as they saw those counting in our biggest county, King county, disregard republican ballots, to favor democrat. This is what the Gore party was trying to do in Florida. They also didn't want to count the military vote. Hmm, why was that? Democrats need to get over their loss.

I believe the court case in 2000 was about not letting the gore hacks break FL law.

Uri, for your information, Gore went to Harvard, not Yale. So your so-called "coincidence" is just more anti-Bush BS.

Good for Bush to do this... as for Gore, he isn't doing the cause of global warming awareness much good with his laughably inaccurate movie. People need to question those who have vested financial interests in hysteria and make a movie containing errors and "exaggerations" (Gore's own words) to get such hysteria. I'd also question a scientist who thinks that 3-4 degree F increase in temperatures will cause "the end of creation" (James Hansen, lead climate modeler at NASA)...

The nobel peace prize has never been anything other than an attempt to drive an agenda (which is often not peace), but it would have been a poor idea for Bush to not meet with Gore.

Well, glad to see the usual herd of global warming skeptics are touting the usual right wing drivel and 'facts'. Guess 98% of the world's climate scientists got it all wrong and you geniuses got it right. How many of you actually have a science degree? I do.

Rex is a real goober.

What I dont understand is why people are complaining about stopping globle warming. Most of the solutions are beneficel in a lot of other ways, the main one being the cost of living.
Hybrid car= less money spent on gas
Halogen light bulbs=
less money on electric bill
Energy star appliances= less money on electric bill
The change from being energy dependent to energey independent are a few easy steps that most people are just to lazy to do.

I think it speaks volumes to see President Bush in the White House with Al Gore. Not even Hillary would do that!!!!

If Gore had won Saddam and his satanic sons would STILL be thumbing their noses at the UN and world community, murdering and torturing thousands, raping women, getting ready to build nukes like Iran is right now, going after Israel, etc., we never would have gone to Afghanistan or outed the Taliban from power, 9/11 would have been treated like another criminal act instead of terrorism against the world via the WORLD TRADE Centers, and no doubt no one would even know or care about so-called 'global warming'. Gore only used the issue to save face after losing. He couldn't even carry his home state in 2000. Lefties, find another hero. Al Gore is Al Bore.

I agree with Brent (above), is this how everyone in the midwest feels? This is ridiculous! Bush has class?!? He has been so unbelievably incompetent. He is a lethal combination of brash and dumb, and I'm not just saying that. I think his record speaks for itself. What have his social policies accomplished? What have his economic policies accomplished? You have got to be kidding me to say President Bush has class. That is setting the bar so incredibly low. I'm a Republican, but I know class when I see it and George W. Bush ain't it.

Brent and ilk-

Folks like you are always commenting on the lack of intellect/education of your political or idealogical adversaries rather than offering substantive arguements. I'm glad you're in Cali, too. I wish more of you would STAY there, but for some reason many are bolting from condascending effite snobs like you I guess.

LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.

HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's in the South.

HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house.

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Think whatever you want about Gore vrs Bush in 2000. All I know is that it is going to take a CLINTON to clean up the mess of yet another BUSH!!

People need to question those who have vested financial interests in hysteria and make a movie containing errors and "exaggerations" (Gore's own words) to get such hysteria.

You must be referring to the post 9/11 rush by the Bush administration and inept congressmen to toss willy-nilly heaps of tax dollars at military contractors without proper oversight or accountability because we'd all be killed pronto if it wasn't, and of course, that great rightie flick, "The Path to 9/11".

Are you better off, financially and economically, than you were 7 years ago? Hmm.

Leader of a worldwide scam, man-made global warming. It’s political propaganda NOT science. UK court says Gore is a fraud. August 2007 Update: Man-made Catastrophic Global Warming Not True. Unfortunately, Hansen is a political hack of George Soros. Further, flawed NASA Global Warming data paid for by George Soros. In order to be an intelligent reader you must have a basic knowledge. Please do your own homework; a starting point http://www.InteliOrg.com/ Remember CONSENSUS is NEVER science it’s always a POLITICAL STATEMENT (Party Line).

The crucial point about the 2000 election is not that Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote. The important points to remember are that (1) Gore would have won the electoral vote, too, if all the votes had been counted; and (2) Gore would have won by a healthy margin in Florida if the secretary of state Katherine Harris hadn't illegally scrubbed names off the voting list, preventing tens of thousands of people from voting. The Republicans, in other words, stole the election, pure and simple.

As an American, I'm outraged at this mockery of democracy; if I were Gore, I would be even more furious. So why is there all this talk about George Bush being a gentleman? He cheated and got away with it; he had nothing to lose by inviting Gore to the White House. No, it is Al Gore who is the gentleman. He was able to maintain his cool while stepping into the house of a thief.

Now there also seems to be some confusion as to why educating the public about global warming is worthy of a Nobel peace prize. The reason is that if the climate continues to change as it has been, a lot of resources will be used up trying to combat the disasters that climate change will bring; and a shortage of resources generally leads to war. On the other hand, if people can be educated, perhaps we will figure out a way to avert the impending ruin of global warming, and thereby prevent war.

Al Gore's peace prize is very well deserved.

The fact of the matter is that Americans care about energy, and I think Bush is starting to take more notice of this. I definitely give him props for discussing the matter with Gore after their election fiasco. More Americans are going green and buying hybrids cars than ever before. More are looking into alternative energy sources. Unity08.com, who are running their own presidential ticket, has a website where users can rank issues, and number one is energy independence: Check it out for yourself. I think this at the very least a landmark year for shifts in public opinion toward a more environmentally-friendly nation, and I'm very glad to see President Bush taking notice.

Sheesh where is that gigantic rock that all you right-wingers have been hiding under?
"Global warming is a scam"
"President Bush has class"

BTW, enough with the 2000 election. It is clear at this point that if they had continued to count the votes in Florida GORE WOULD HAVE WON. As a matter of fact the supreme court had no business getting involved, and actually stated that continuing the count would cause "irreparable harm" to Bush. Yes, I said that right... They claimed that counting the voters votes would cause Bush harm! That's why they stopped it! Does that sound right to you??!!!

GLOBAL WARMING IS GOOD!

1. It got rid of the ice age!
2. It melted the glaciers covering most of North America some 20,000 yrs. ago and that gave us our Great Lakes!
3. It's not caused by humans though...not too many SUV's and factories back then....look-up at that big ball of fire, some 93 million miles away, in the sky and get a clue!
Gotta admit...Al made you all look like idiots!

Response to comments by Eric D - If you are going to comment on global warming science please do the bare minimum and research the facts.

The fact is that every time one of your vaunted models has been put to the test, they have all failed. Specifically, when the models have been loaded with data from some point in the past, they failed to come anywhere close to predicting how the climate actually developed in later years.

The Earth has always warmed and cooled on its own. It went through a natural warming cycle for the past few decades and appears now to be in the beginning of a cooling cycle. And nothing that we humans have done has or ever will change that.

The truth is that the proponents of the the religion of man-made global warming have one thing in common: They are all anti-capitalists. The future prosperity of our country and, indeed, the world, depends on us recognizing the myth of man-made global warming for the scam that it is.

"reluctantly embraced – with the Bush administration lately acknowledging the role that humans play in global warming, but still opposing mandatory caps on polluting emissions."

Mark Silva. Clarify. (Please.)

I found this dated June 2001. Gore IT book/movie 2006. (He deserved the prize for making this as visible as it is today.) Reluctant though? Only recently acknowledging man made contribution to natural climate flux?

President Bush Discusses Global Climate Change

"That is why I am today committing the United States of America to work within the United Nations framework and elsewhere to develop with our friends and allies and nations throughout the world an effective and science-based response to the issue of global warming."

****

"First, we know the surface temperature of the earth is warming. It has risen by .6 degrees Celsius over the past 100 years. There was a warming trend from the 1890s to the 1940s. Cooling from the 1940s to the 1970s. And then sharply rising temperatures from the 1970s to today.

There is a natural greenhouse effect that contributes to warming. Greenhouse gases trap heat, and thus warm the earth because they prevent a significant proportion of infrared radiation from escaping into space. Concentration of greenhouse gases, especially CO2, have increased substantially since the beginning of the industrial revolution. And the National Academy of Sciences indicate that the increase is due in large part to human activity. "

"Our country, the United States is the world's largest emitter of manmade greenhouse gases. We account for almost 20 percent of the world's man-made greenhouse emissions. We also account for about one-quarter of the world's economic output. We recognize the responsibility to reduce our emissions. We also recognize the o
