Iowa Republicans for...Obama: The Swamp

by John McCormick

Sen. Barack Obama talks about Republicans all the time on the campaign trail.

He points to what he views as their failings in national leadership, but also how some approach him after campaign events and confess that they are backing him. He often jokes that they don't need to whisper about backing a Democrat.

Obama's embracing of the GOP expanded today with the release by his campaign of a list of 268 Iowa Republicans backing his candidacy.

"This public support from Iowa Republicans is yet another sign of Senator Obama’s crossover appeal," the campaign said in a statement.

I know John D and Bruce, secretly, can't wait to vote for him.

I hope these Iowa Republicans don't mind death threats from other Republicans. After all the Republican party of life was not afraid to send death and hate messages to the family of a 9 year old child who talked about SCHIP. Still waiting for a Republican to say that it was wrong for anyone to send a child or the parents of a child threats of death.

Earth-shattering News! Wow!

President Bush received 751,000 votes in Iowa in 2004. Even if you believe that the 268 names Obama releases are actually Republicans (we know the media will never check to see if these people are actually Republicans), that 268 number is so insignificant that only a Tribune reporter would take this Obama press release seriously.

Get real

Well, I'm a republican from North Carolina that is also supporting Sen Obama. I saw him speak in Durham last week and it was a very inspiring message. Expect other 'pubs to join in with their support too.

Brucie:

268 now - how many by November of next year?? Do you REALLY think that there are only 268 Republicans are going to vote for Obama??

Somehow, I think if this was the release of 268 Democrats who are coming out for Rudy, you would be pointing at it as the demise of the Democratic Party.

They may simply want two chances to vote against that odious woman.

"Iowa Republicans for...Obama"

I'm not surprised by this, the GOPers have such a pathetic group of candidates this time around, I'm enjoying watching them come unglued.

That's the extreme right these days. All the hate-spewing, flag-waving, country-dividing scare tactics that worked so well for them for so many years aren't so effective anymore. These boys have cried wolf one time too many; most people are on to their "talking point" routines by now, and they've used up all the new tricks in Karl "Genius" Rove's little black bag.

So all they can do is yell louder and talk meaner.

They're acting sort of like people who speak really loudly at foreigners, as if it will help them understand better.

In other words, they're insane.

One could argue that the Congressional Dems are equally insane, to keep capitulating to Bush over and over and somehow expecting him to stop peeing all over them.

But the extreme right seems dangerously insane; the difference I see in them is that Captain Crazy Giuliani is leading in the polls for them and even most of them can't explain exactly why that is.

These are the ABC Republicans (Anyone But Clinton), but the problem is, based on Obama's naive and sometimes idiotic remarks throughout the campaign, the GOPers better get behind a Demo candidate with at least an ounce of gray matter between the ears. This country cannot afford another Jimmy Carter.

anyone considering voting Republican should take a look around and see what the last 8 years of Republican leadership has brought the US. Nuff said.

I'm guessing these so-called Iowa Republicans really aren't Republicans.
Obama is for higher taxes, more spending, more social progams, more socialistic policies. He also is anti-military, and the fact that he cannot even do the right thing and hold his hand to his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem shows he has disdain for this country. It is so embarrassing to have Obama and Dickie Durbin as Illinois senators.
Sheesh, the Boy Governor, Obama, Dickie Durbin, Boy Stroger. What an incredibly lame, insignificant and putrid lot of politians this state has. Illinois truly is ILL -inois.

Looks like a lot of people are still in denial. Here is the reality:

Yes, there are a considerable number of Republicans who support Obama. These are just some of the early deciders who are taking the step of signaling that they will register as Democrats on caucus night in oreder to vote for Obama.

There is no evidence that they will automatically support another Democrat if Obama is not nominated.

It is only an educated guess, but very unlikely that they will vote for Hillary if she wins the nomination.

268 republicans that we know of. This is significant in that only 3 percent of Iowans participate in the caucuses. So the fact that Bush won by 750,000 in the general elections does not really mean a thing

I agree. I was a life long fiscal conservative Republican. Even helped Richard Petty campaign in NC. I heard Obama speak in Austin at an event with over 20,000 people. The guy moved me. If he is not up for election then my vote will probably go back to Republican, either Huckabee or Paul

Republicans supporting Obama is like democrats who supported Reagan. it is possible and this kind of thing can change an era in politics.
I applaud Bob for saying he was moved by Obama's speech last weekend and for supporting him.
Actually there is a group called Republicans for Obama. there are alot.

Being a muslim who hides his heritage, it wouldn't suprise me if he surrendered the USA and Israel in a platter to the muslim world. I think that this is a serious muslim effort started in the 60s to take over the american govt. from the inside hatched in a Madrasa in Indonesia where Senator Barack Hussien Obama went to school.

Probably because the Republicans would love to see Boy Wonder get the nomination, so Romney, Thompson, Gulianni, etc.. can kick his butt in November.

Wow. 268 republicans for Obama. Let's see how long it takes for Hillary Clinton to gloatingly drum up 269... actually scratch that. There may be 269 republicans nationwide, total, forever, willing to vote for that woman.

Raghy Kasthuri being a misinformed bigot who hides all shreds of inner decency when he adopts an online persona, it wouldn't surprise me if Allah sentenced him to some Sisyphean task when he reaches the afterlife and realizes that, just by some random chance, Islam actually is the one true religion and Barack Hussein Obama is its greatest prophet. Or maybe he'll just lose consciousness and fade into an eternal oblivion with only brief seconds to contemplate the late hours he and I both wasted on online comment section bellyaching.

Can Obama show up for his votes in the Senate? Will the Swamp report on this? Obama is making less than a quarter of his Senate votes.

Brilliant, Raghu. Watertight theory based on hard evidence (internet distortion and rumors) and logical premises (wild conspiracy theory speculation). Glad to know our votes are worth the same in the end.

Australians for Obama. Our two countries have very strong ties. On every battlefield in the last century, for good or bad, Australians and Americans have died beside each other, and for each other. 100,000 American kids lay down their lives between where I am now in Brisbane and Japan. The US military always prefers to go into battle with the Australian SAS (long range recon). I was myself an Australian soldier for 10 years. I served in the intelligence community.

Americans! At your best you are simply untouchable in the world community, and it is time to reach those heights again, for all the citizens of the world. When we hear Senator Barack Obama speak we want to SWIM the pacific ocean and stand by him in Iowa. He is actually displaying incredible humility when he says that the day he is elected President, the opinion of the rest of the world towards America changes ... because he is right. We are pleading with Americans to step up and do everything they can to make this great man the leader of the free world. PLEASE, this is your moment and the world may only get this one chance. There is so much at stake. I am worried for the future my child will have.

If you let this man lead he will unite and magnify the coalition of the willing 10 fold. The Europeans are actually longing to get on board and we Australians whilst we have never left your side will never be more prouder or fiercer to serve at the pleasure of the President of the UNITED States of America.

We Australians particularly commend those Republicans and Independants that are preparing to caucus in Iowa for Barack and implore you to do all in your powers to bring others with you. You simply have no idea how much the rest of the world is watching this.

May God bless and strengthen the resolve and heart of every patriot American as they forfill thier own destiny in support of this great man. God Bless America.

Dave, Barack doesn't believe in God Bless America. In fact, Barack doesn't believe in saying the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem or putting his hand over his heart for both, which is custom.

Dave,
Rather than try to swim to the US to support Barack, why don't you just ask him to walk to Brisbane from Iowa? Or maybe he can just don his cape and fly Down Under? Seriously, though, being in Brisbane you may not be up to speed on Illinois politics. But I can tell you that Obama is not who you believe he is. Back home, he has routinely endorsed some of the worst crooks on the Democratic side in Illinois politics, simply to advance his own ambitions. But don't just take my word for it. For starters, you can search under the names "Todd Stroger" and "Cook County." Others can suggest other names, as well. I am not saying Obama is a crook or that he is unworthy of votes. He is, however, unworthy of the world-saving attributes you ascribe to him. He has proven unable to do anything to fix Illinois. I doubt he could do much for the rest of the world.

See. America has been so divided for too long that it still cannot accept the unity, a president who is truly for all people, a real visionary. So when the senator speaks of no blue states or red states just the United States I can't see why all Americans don't embrace this philosphy. On the other hand those who don't are the true bigots who embrace division, segregation. I think all of America, including Hillary Clinton and John Edwards and the GOP presidential candidates should stand behind Barack Obama because he is the only one running for president today who can deal with not only the current problems facing America but the immediate problems facing the world. And it is really not about his ideologies so much as it is about him, his person!

I will bet that there will be far less democrats and independants voting for a Republican candidate this next year than republicans voting for a democratic candidate.
A) there are plenty of Republicans that dont espouse the 1 track party mandate of the current GOP that does Everythign they do with the intended result of enriching themselves and their friends.
B) plenty of Repubs that understand this war was wrong, badly run, and dragging on too long.
