The Swamp

by John McCormick

TIBURON, Calif. - Reggie Love makes sure the water bottle is always full, the PowerBars are stocked and that the boss gets out of bed on time for his daily exercise regimen.

The former football and basketball player at Duke University is what presidential campaigns call a "body man."

Every major candidate has one. Love, 25, has walked -- literally -- in Sen. Barack Obama's shadow since February, acting as something of a traveling valet to make sure the Illinois Democrat's personal needs are met.

He snaps photos when supporters ask that their picture be taken with the candidate, makes sure there is always a Sharpie marker at the ready for autographs and keeps the candidate's favorite music loaded on the iPod.

Love also plays basketball with the candidate whenever they can squeeze in a game. And no, he says, he never lets the boss win on purpose.

"There is nothing worse than losing to Barack Obama," Love said Wednesday as he waited for Obama to finish a fundraiser at a home in Tiburon. "You never hear the end of it."

The rest of the story is in this morning's Tribune.

Some time back I predicted that the Obama-lovers at the Swamp, desperate for angles to promote their man, would start writing about Obama's milkman, his barber, his cousin's manicurist, his ....

And sure enough, we have today's huge story (dominating page 3 of the print edition) about Obama's BODYGUARD.

The bodyguard is probably a nice fellow, but this story consumes more column inches than any story the Trib has ever run on Duncan Hunter and several other Republican presidential candidates!

Bruce, what do you enjoy most about being obtuse and irrelevant? Huh? If you don't like mud rassling don't watch them. If you don't like turkey and cranberries don't eat it. If you don't like 24 hours of Seinfeld reruns don't watch it. Get the picture? Why torture yourself with your own inadequacies? If you don't like yourself, well then you got a problem. As for Duncan Hunter, who he? For a lot of us normal people reading about an interesting candidate is a welcome break from the pasty, drab,
pablum that your "several other Republican presidential candidates" represent. So what are your priorities, dude, finding relevancy in yourself or counting the number of times Obama is mentioned?

Bruce whines thusly:

this story consumes more column inches than any story the Trib has ever run on Duncan Hunter and several other Republican presidential candidates!

That is because Duncan Hunter and the rest of those GOP candidates are losers with no chance of success.

Just like you, Bruce.

I sort of agree with you, Bruce. Romney has handlers, P.R. gurus, pollsters, hairdressers, etc. So do Guillani, Huckabee, McCain, Thompson, et. al. We never hear about their staff or the machinations they go through in order to give their bosses the right image. All of them stack the deck in their own favors when making campaign stops. And yet according to wingnut logic only Hillary is a triangulator, ambitious, ruthless and so on. Maybe the Republicans, with think tank and corporate money, can help Thompson appear to be a populist, Guillani to be a leader rather than a bully, Romney to not be the biggest flip-flopper ever and McCain does not pander to the lowest denominator.
Why do you suppose that is?

Bruce- I am with you dude..

Obama, who really has done nothing politically other than look good, speak well and NOT be Hillary is almost always given at least 3-5 stories in the Swamp..

I am laughing as I write this when I see some of the folks posting defending this-
(nisleb, GW)- what could you possibly say to Bruce's accurate claim that Obama gets more exposure in this venue than all other candidates combined..?

nisleb- your contention that the reason this is Ok, is "...That is because Duncan Hunter and the rest of those GOP candidates are losers with no chance of success...." What a well thought out, lucid response, do you realize that you are saying that you are ok with this being called journalism when it is obviously promoting one candidate over everyone else??

still laughing- this is too funny to get upset about.

From John McCormick's article:

"Love, who got into some trouble for drinking issues during college..."

In fact, Love was arrested for driving under the influence, and underage drinking, and was kicked off the Duke basketball team.

Isn't it funny how reporter John McCormick couldn't just say this, and instead tried to pass it off under the euphemism "drinking issues..."?

"heartburn", you're right--this article is laughable.

Heartburn:

Bruce always whines about how much coverage Obama gets in the Swamp. There are obvious reasons for this:

A) He is the hometown boy.
B) He is running second in the Dem nomination

You also see a lot of articles in the Swamp about Hillary, Mitt, Rudy and occasionally Ron Paul. You don't see much about Biden, Dodd, Richardson, Kucinich, Gravel or any of the loser GOP candidates.

Why should the Swamp cover these losers? That don't stand a chance of winning.

Let's face it; if they did cover these also-rans we probably wouldn't read the coverage, because we just wouldn't care.

Heartburn,
Obama is from Illinois. The CHICAGO Tribune is from Illinois. When you open the Seattle Times do you expect to get more in depth coverage of the Cleveland Browns than that of the Seahawks? Man your dumb.

On this article, I haven't seen anything this gay since the Ronald Reagan love fest at the Republic debate at his library.

Your right- lets skip this whole presidential race, debating, and discussing issues.. what a time waster.

Come to think of it- lets not even vote, lets ask all of the major news outlets to nominate who should be prez! Kind of like all star ballotting...AND we could do it on MTV this way really cool, trendy people like Obama won't have to actually address issues, or make a committments to supporting any of the real issues that effect all of us.

How 'bout that sparky, would that make it easier for you?

Jethro- wow, how dumb of me-

This being an online posting site that only reaches Chicagoans-how did the tribune do that!
Just so I understand, does this mean that I have to vote for Obama since I live in Illinois? Or on the other hand- if I am not from Illinois am I restricted from voting for Obama?

Oh man- just remembered- wasn't Hillary born in Illinois?

What do I do now Jethro- help! dumb people like me need you now more than ever!

Did you eat paste when you were a child?

Heartburn:

If you want equal representation in the press for second and third tier candidates you are out of luck. It will never happen, it never has happened. Why? Because nobody cares!

If you want to start your own website nobody is stopping you. You can write all the articles you want about Duncan Hunter. Nobody will read them, but nobody is stopping you.

still laughing- this is too funny to get upset about.

Then why have you posted THREE times about it?

Did you eat paste when you were a child?

No but I wiped boogers on losers like you that asked dumb questions.

Actually Nisleib, there have been weeks in which the Swamp would run daily Chris Dudd articles from David Lightman.

Bruce, what do you think the odds would be if Mr. Love was working for, hmmm, Romney or Guiliani or McCain and still had the underage drinking, DUI and being kicked off the Duke basketball team problems? Do you think the Tribune folks would be highlighting those problems rather than sweeping them under the rug? My bet is that there would be hordes of Swamp posts pointing out that troubled past.

Also, Bruce, remember the Tribune deliberately derailed Jack Ryan's senate run to help set the stage for Obama. The Trib has been a paid operative of the Obama folks for four years now.

Ok- well I guess we know how you decide-A year ahead of election day- with not one primary completed, you read the Swamp and whoever gets talked about the most you vote for.. that actually explains a lot..

Chimpy- I guess your right - this started out as so much fun...

Little Johnny Journalist,
I'm disappointed, I though you being a journalist would admire the Tribunes search for the TRUTH. Isn't that what journalists should do? The Tribune didn't derail Jack Ryan, they wanted the truth. The right wing bible thumpers couldn't handle the truth and forced Jack Ryan to withdraw. Democrats and Indys didn't care what Ryan does in his private life, heck we almost had a nominee that bit his ex-wife on the ankle and kicked her in the shins.

I've yet to see one comment from the Libnuts on their man, St. Barack, self-styled Spokesman for the Common Man, hiring a "traveling valet" like some European monarch.

I remember when they were showing on youtube two months ago how obama left edwards house you could see an other guy taking the car with obama. I thought then who the hell is this man? Edwards even gave him his hand. I thought then it could have been michelles brother. Obviously it was reggie love and obviously edwards is a decent man who also shakes hands with body men. By the way edwards wife didn't gave reggie love her hand. Considering her words about Michelle in Iowa you could not call that a surprise.
