The Swamp

by Andrew Malcolm

Score another touchdown for Mitt Romney in the Republican struggle for the party's conservative family values base.

The former Massachusetts governor has just received the endorsement of Paul Weyrich, an influential conservative leader over the last quarter-century and a founder of the Moral Majority and the Heritage Foundation. The news was leaked to the Brody File, written by David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, just the audience the Romney campaign wants to reach with what Brody calls "a big one."

Coming on the heels of the recent endorsement of Romney by Bob Jones III, now chancellor of the evangelical Bob Jones University in South Carolina, this adds substantially to a sense of conservative momentum toward Romney. And, by extension, it shows two prominent Christian leaders ignoring Romney's Mormon religion, which has bothered some fundamentalist Christians. It could be a big help for Romney's early states strategy, counting on success in Iowa and New Hampshire, where he has lead, to build momentum for South Carolina, where he has trailed until recently.

The 65-year-old Weyrich, a onetime journalist who moved into politics, founded the American Legislative Exchange Council, an organization of state legislators; was a co-founder of the Council for National Policy, a strategy-formulating organization for social conservatives; co-publisher of the magazine Conservative Digest; and national chairman of Coalitions for America, an association of conservative activist organizations. The CSFC later reorganized into the Free Congress Foundation, which he now chairs.

In his endorsement, Weyrich praised Romney saying, "He will strengthen our economy, our military and our families. More importantly, he already has an exceptional record of putting conservative values to work."

As Brody noted, "It's not about the amount of influence Weyrich has today. It's about how his name is synonymous with traditional values conservatism. That's the payoff more than anything else."

Andrew Malcolm writes for Top of the Ticket, the L.A. Times' political blog.

Romney and Hillary are the two worst possible candidates.

Therefore they will probably win.

The party's "conservative family values base"? that's become an oxymoron, hasn't it?...Idaho Senator WideStance, Mark Foley, Rev Ted Haggard.

Mitt "Nowhere Man" Rommel

He's a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lends you a hand.

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.

He's a real Nowhere Man,

While Thompson and Huckabee are both politically pointed in the right direction, I do not see how they think they will be anything more than mere distractions in the upcoming primary elections. As a proof is in the pudding kind of guy, I see Mitt Romney as the clear winner for the Republican Party. His whole life is a triumph. He has triumphed in the political world as a governor and as a savior of the 2002 Olympics. He has triumphed in the business world like no other businessman. And, most importantly, he hass triumphed in his own home as a faithful husband and role-model father. I WANT TO BE LIKE MITT. His life is the life I want for me and my family. I can't look at ANY OTHER leading candidate and say that.

Isn't this a little like getting the 'Goebbels' endorsement ?

And wasn't this Heinrich fellow involved in some bad stuff....oops, sorry, the names are kinda similar. Accidentally crossed the names up. That would be Himmler, doh! Sorry again. Another name cross up.

Not a Romney fan, but because Thompson has been such a great disappointment, and the rest of the field simply has not a chance of winning a national election, to include McCain and Guilliani, both looking as if they are ready to drool and mutter darkly, though Romney is the only Republican candidate with potential and the necessary intelligence, money, and ambition. But they had better come up with an alternative quickly to the mendacious spouse of the former Felon-and-Serial-Rapist-in Chief, who truly threatens the United States because of her rank inexperience, pathologies, unintelligence, mendacity, and her lunatic agenda, based on feminist ideals, which have been completely discredited for decades. Luckily, some seventy percent of all male voters, plus the 49% of voters overall who would never vote for her under any circumstances may hold sway, but the Republicans should not tempt fate by trundling out a candidate that has the sort of problems attendant to all other candidates but Romney. So they need to get behind him with their donations, totally and earnestly, or they may end by having a disastorous administration take office in January, 2009, which will simply be a redux of the salacious and felonious Clinton one of the past, multiplied by the power of 10. So, Go, Romney, go!

Interesting bedfellows. LDS and Fundies have traditionally been at odds. Now they join together to hate the gays and reinstate back alley abortions. Guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend in this case...

Oh great, the neocons over at Heritage give Mitt their blessing. Ariel Cohen, of the Heritage foundation, was one of those who thought invading Iraq would be such a great idea? Vote Mitt and get four more years of "stay the course"!

HOLY COW!!!--"The Moral Majority backs the presidential candidacy of Ronald Reagan and helps sweep him into office in dramatic fashion. In addition, 12 liberal Democrat senators and several liberal House members are defeated launching a new wave of political activity within the evangelical community. The political landscape is spectacularly altered," The Moral Majority Coalition website.
Ah, right...--The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions...
As Ted Koppel felt compelled to report: "It is becoming increasingly clear that George Bush Sr, operating largely behind the scenes throughout the 1980s, initiated and supported much of the financing, intelligence, and military help that built Iraq into an aggressive power. Reagan/Bush administrations permitted--and frequently encouraged--the flow of money, dual-use technology, chemicals and weapons to Iraq."
"Bush ... is more like the quantum theory of light. For long periods of time, he does not seem to be speaking or, so far as the public can tell, doing something on an issue. Then, suddenly, you have a pulse of energy. He comes forward at a particular time in a particular setting where he's likely to get the most attention, and he comes forward with new ways of framing issues ... 'He who frames the issues tends to determine the outcome,'" Michael Barone, The Bush Presidency at Midterm: As Assessment, The Heritage Foundation, June 2, 2003.
Surely: Sudan offered up Osama, trying to have terrorism sanctions lifted--but Clinton and Co. weren't interested... (See Clinton Let Bin Laden Slip Away and Metastasize, LA Times, 12/05/01); Rep. Charles Key asserted that the Govt. knew about the OK Bombing in advance but did nothing, while a Govt. report states: "It must be concluded that the damage at the Murrah Building is not the result of the truck bomb itself, but rather due to other factors such as locally placed charges within the building itself ..." (See Case Study Relating Blast Effects to the Events of April 19, 1995, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma); A couple of weeks prior to our invasion of Iraq Tony Blair put it succinctly: "Weapons inspectors in Iraq muct be given the time and space they need to do their job," adding that they were only half through in their search for WMDs; "... for years the United States and its allies blocked international campaigns designed to condemn Saddam for his use of mustard and neuro-toxic gases," Saddam Hussein, A Biased Trial, B. Lando.
It's like how, in Aug. 1989, acting on a sizzling hot tip, agents from US Customs and the FBI converged on the Atlanta offices of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro. The raid netted evidence that the Italian government-owned bank had given Iraq $5.5 billion worth of US taxpayer-guaranteed agriculture loans since '85. Nothing wrong with that...--except that most of the funds had been illegally diverted to develop Saddam Hussein's military machine, in particular his incipient nuclear weapons program. Among those implicated in the loan scam: Robert Mosbacher--the Commerce Secretary, Lawrence Eagleburger--later to become US Secretary of State under Bush Sr, Brent Scowcroft--National Security Advisor under Ford and Bush Sr and Chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board under GW Bush, Clayton Yeutter--former Agriculture Secretary, James Baker--former Secretary of State, Boyden Gray--White House Counsel, and, yes sirry Bob, President HW Bush himself...

"big conservative endorsement"? The Moral Majority and the Heritage Foundation are nothing more then radical Christian far-right wingers that want to create nothing less then a fundamental Christian state. & strenghten families? How? You're going to legislate this?

Thump your bible somewhere else. I already have a migrane from too many years of Bush, & my family is strong enough without you.

This is news? What's next? Waterboarders for Romney?

In other news, not a peep in the MSM about Ron Paul's amazing haul so far. It appears that he has raised over $3M online in less than 3 days. $2.3 came in less than a day. Folks, I'm a partisan Dem, but Paul's haul is real news, not endorsements from wackos. I'm beginning to worry about this guy.

Why are Christians radical right? We don't kill women and children and innocent men but, Islamic Jihadists do--these people are animals. You bet we are living in a strange age when intelligent people perfer Islamofascist Jihadists for good living Christians our society is sick and to quote Shakespere: Oh judgement you have fled to brutish beasts and men have lost their reason. This is where we are in time we need to think about 08 and consider seriously electing candidates. The GOP knows what America really wants! Liberal Democrats are on the wrong side of History. Felon-and-Serial-Rapist-in Chief? Got lost once I got to that one. Congratulations on writing a whole post (mostly) without using the name Clinton. She must be tired from running through everyones head so much. But Felon-and-Serial-Rapist-in Chief, very nice. What would over the top name did you reserve for Bush to beat that?

Christian Mormon ? This is some kind of protestant ?

Come on, this guy is a joke , if he wants to remember of this day, he will remember that was the day Ron Paul breaks the one day's donation record.

Crazy Jerry from Springfield,

The Good little Christians don't kill women and children and innocent men?

Really? you might want to go over to Baghdad and ask some of the locals about that.

Jerry,
How many tens of thousands of innocent men, women, and children do you think have died from U.S., multinational forces and Iraqi police actions, moron? Does the term collateral damage mean anything to you?

The GOP knows what America really wants! Liberal Democrats are on the wrong side of History. Jerry White,Springfield, IL

That's why you won the '06 election, eh Jerry? That's why polls show that two thirds of Americans want us out. Like Bush, Jerry White from Springfield, Il. creates his own reality.

Paul Weyrick does not represent me... Why is this news?

Kudos to the person who quoted the lyrics of Nowhere Man... how appropriate!

Wake up mainstream media! The REAL news today is Ron Paul. Wake up from your slumber. A revolution is taking place, and you are sleeping!

The time for honoring yourselfs will soon come to an end. Your Goose is cooked.

Mit has got my support. He is a highly successful individual and He is dead on in nearly evey area. And he has lots of kids, so he knows how important Fathers are.

This whole thing is confusing. If "conservative" means fiscally responsible and trying for less governmental interference in our personal business, None of this article makes any sense.

Romney = Robot. Don't vote for a pandering flip-flopper. GOP take back your party from the vacant Bush ideologues.

When I read the headline, "Romney scores a big conservative endorsement," I thought maybe one of the world's leading Ayatollahs had come out for Romney.

Ron Paul 2008

Ron Paul is the GOP's only hope at coming back from the brink of irrelevance.

Jerry, keep in the Secular Loony Left and their drooling media lapdogs view Christians as hateful, ignorant people who should be laughed and hidden. They view Christians as no better, and probably even worse, than radical Islamic terrorists.

Look at the hysterical maniacal nonsense being dished in here towards Christians.

I thought maybe one of the world's leading Ayatollahs had come out for Romney.

Posted by: John Chuckman, Toronto, Canada | November 6, 2007 8:15 AM

Well, he did get Bob Jones III's endorsement, and he's not much different than an Ayatollah.

Bring on Mitt Romney. Then we will bring out his campaign commercials from when he ran against Ted Kennedy - you know, the ones that said he would be a better friend to gay people than Kennedy??

Or how about that his draft-age sons patriotic contributions to this country are to drive around in a gas-guzzling motor home and campaign for their dad, instead of being in the armed forces??

Johnny D: You finally hit rock bottom by agreeing with Jerry White.

BobinATL -- Better yet, Mitt can be continued to ask why he bashes other's healthcare plans while he backs away further from his own similar (and successful) plan he pushed through in Massachusetts. By the way, to get it passed, he appealed to none other than the ol' Teddy Bear to wrestle some Dem votes in favor of the legislation, and had him on stage during the signing ceremony. Mitt's a real two-faced piece of work.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1680168-1,00.html

Bobin, I'll take Jerry White any day over anyone from the Left. It's not rock bottom, it's standing up for what is right.

Why is this such big news you ask? Fundies think Mormons are misguided at best. But they are finally realizing that Mormons have similar values, so it's okay to support one. After getting over years of bigotry, Fundies are pulling their heads out of their (I'll say sand) and realizing that Romney is the only guy on the list that can actually run this country.

Let's be clear folks. The office of president is not the same as high-school class president. I see comments like "he's a robot" and other ad hom attacks, but who would you rather have actually running the country? Someone who is analytical, or someone who makes you believe he is analytical?

Romney is the real deal. He is successful for a reason. He's actually run a state. He's run the Olympics. He's run one of the most successful VC firms in the United States.

As for Ron Paul - what a joke. You RP spammers want to vote for someone because of what he believes - not because of what he can accomplish. Ron Paul has no real plans. He wants to dismantle the DOE - so what? Then what are his plans?

It's called the EXECUTIVE office for a reason folks. We need someone who can actually execute. Romney has spent his entire life actually executing successful strategy. Rudy comes in at a very distant second. Ron Paul is in line with the democrats on this one - none of thim have run squat.

Let me be clear. Voting for random crap in congress is not leadership experience. It is representative experience. Try to get any of these guys other than Mitt or Rudy to run a department store and the place would burn to the ground.

It's about time the rest of the republicans rally around Romney. He will cut the fat out of Washington and fix our economy. Just like he's done for many corporations, the Olympics, and Mass.

Who the heck is Paul Weyrich? He doesn't represent me. I'm a Christian and I don't give 2 cents for what this guy thinks.

On the other hand, RON PAUL represents me.

Talk about a family man with conservative values and a strong stance on national defense! On top of that he's a walking talking testimony of Christian values and the Christian spirit.

If you people knew anything about Mormons you'd think twice before supporting a guy so closely associated with this brand of religion.

Being a practicing Catholic, I refuse to sit by & allow the Moral Majority and the Heritage Foundation talk as if they're the center of the moral universe. They believe only in their on version of warped Christianity & a trying to impose that as their doctrane on America.
These are the Anne Coulture's who believe Jews would be better if they converted to Christianity. These are the Bob Jones Univeristy types who believe the Pope is an agent of the devil & Catholics are going to hell. They have no tolerance for any other religion other then their own.

I have zero tolerance for another religion trying to tell me how to practice my faith & I have even less tolerance for this Taliban form of Christianity trying to rule any part of this country.

RomanB,

I guess that means you won't be hooking up with JWSI and John D. at "Jesus Camp" anytime soon. What a shame, they're such fine jihadists Christian fundies, too.

yes, dt, I am a Christian jihadist and look forward to the day we can wipe you off the planet.

Give me a break with your Christian bigotry, your Christian hatred, and basically your clueless nonsense.

RomanB doesn't seem to be all that strong on that "false witness" stuff either.

Crazy John Devola,

Was that a threat? Are you going to do the dirty work yourself, or send your CIA buddies over to do it for you? You know, Colonel Flagg and Co.?

Here Devola,
I've borrowed some inspiring quotes from your favorite Christian fundies:

Becky Fischer: It's no wonder, with that kind of intense training and discipling, that those young people are ready to kill themselves for the cause of Islam. I wanna see young people who are as committed to the cause of Jesus Christ as the young people are to the cause of Islam. I wanna see them as radically laying down their lives for the Gospel as they are over in Pakistan and Israel and Palestine and all those different places, you know, because we have... excuse me, but we have the truth

Becky Fischer: I can go into a playground of kids that don't know anything about Christianity, lead them to the Lord in a matter of, just no time at all, and just moments later they can be seeing visions and hearing the voice of God, because they're so open. They are so usable in Christianity.

Becky Fischer: [Referring to President George W. Bush] He has really brought some real credibility, um, to the Christian faith.

Becky Fischer: And while I'm on the subject, let me say something about Harry Potter. Warlocks are the enemies of God! And I don't care what kind of hero they are, they're an enemy of God and had it been in the old testament Harry Potter would have been put to death!
Crowd: Amen!
Becky Fischer: You don't make heroes out of warlocks!

(Becky Fischer is a Pentecostal children's pastor. She is best known for her role in the 2006 documentary film Jesus Camp.)

Note: The camp featured in the controversial documentary Jesus Camp will shut down due to negative response from the film, according to camp director Becky Fischer.

The documentary spotlights Kids on Fire, a charismatic summer camp where evangelical children are recruited to "God's army." The children who attend the camp are shown shaking and sobbing over abortion and praying over a cardboard cutout of President Bush.
(As reported by Christianity Today Magazine).

BTW, Johnny D., you and "those of your ilk" are not true Christians. You're fundies, just like the scary bunch above.
