The Swamp

By Mike Dorning

Civil rights leader and former Carter Administration U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young says 46-year-old Barack Obama is too young to be president and lacks the network of political allies that can provide important support for a national leader.

“I want Barack Obama to be president,” Young said, pausing for effect, “in 2016.”

“It’s not a matter of being inexperienced. It’s a matter of being young,” said Young, who is 75. “There’s a certain level of maturity ... you’ve got to learn to take a certain amount of (expletive).”

Young made the comments at an appearance on "Newsmakers Live," an urban media forum that interviews prominent Atlanta personalities. The comments were reported by the Associated Press based on excerpts of an undated interview that were posted on Newsmakers Journal, the Newsmakers' web site

Young added that Obama needs a political network to bolster him in office. He noted Hillary Clinton had a well-established network of allies, including her husband, to provide political protection.

“There are more black people that Bill and Hillary lean on,” Young said. “You cannot be president alone. ... To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion. His time will come and the world will be ready for a visionary leadership.”
Young also quipped that “Bill is every bit as black as Barack.”

“He’s probably gone with more black women than Barack,” Young said of former President Clinton, drawing laughs from a live television audience. Young quickly followed the comment with the disclaimer, “I’m clowning.”

Mr. Young was right on the money on this point.

Since they knew each other several years ago, Barack and Michele Obama have just gone with each other. So Bill must have gone with more black women because that is his lifestyle.
This is not a contest about who have had more extra-marital affairs. It's about who can be the best Leader of the free world.

The last paragraph - Young says he's clowning, but how did think why did that joke develop in his thoughts. Makes you go hmmmm?

Now if he said Wilt Chamberlain...?

I believe he's over 38, isn't that the cutoff. JFK, Teddy Roosevelt, even Bill Clinton were younger than Obama. Lincoln was a three, maybe four years older but Barack edges Lincoln out on "experience". What is this numb skull talking about??

Hi Mr Young, was Bill Clinton too young to be president? Does Barrack Obama have to wait until he is 70 to run? Please keep your "wisdom" to yourself.

Mr. Young's time is over. He did a good service to this country once, but since then he has become rather something of an embarrassment. His "joke" at the end typifies this.

2016 is Young death date. He will pass at age 84, carrying with him the old america history made of unnecessary old racial fights. Time has changed and the world needs to move on.This is our generation time.

Hillary has fought the relentless and insidious efforts by far-right Republicans to limit the protections of Roe v Wade, while also working hard to expand access to family planning services.
Hillary has seen what happens when governments try to control a woman's reproductive health decisions. Whether it was Romania under a dictatorship saying you had to have children for the good of the state or China saying you had to have only one child for the good of the state, governments have dictated the most private and important decisions that we as individuals or families can make.
She has championed the Prevention First Act, which expands access to family planning services for low-income women, requires health insurance companies to cover contraception, and provides a dedicated funding stream for age-appropriate, medically accurate, comprehensive sex education.
As First Lady, she helped pass the Family and Medical Leave Act and helped found the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancies, which established and achieved a goal of reducing teen pregnancies by one-third between 1996 and 2005.
In partnership with Senator Patty Murray, Hillary waged a successful three-year battle to get the Food and Drug Administration to accept the overwhelming recommendation of the medical community and make Plan B (the "morning after" pill) available over the counter.
Hillary's work to empower low-income women has changed lives. She fought for the elimination of school fees, which prevent poor children in some countries from attending school, and for investments in health care and education for women and girls. And she helped found Vital Voices, a not-for-profit organization that continues to work to support women's leadership around the globe.

I think Andy Young and a large per-centage of the black ministers, who have the nerve to question the ability of young black leadership in comparison to the Clintons have lost their minds.
We are no longer on the plantations, we have moved to higher ground.
How old does anyone have to be, to become president of the United States? Shame on Andy Young and other black leaders who seem to think other blacks do not qualify, simply because they can't and never could have based on their recent comments.

The last time I checked, Andrew Young was getting rich by exploring the people of Nigeria. Please give me a break when it comes to this so called corrupt leader. They are all lining up behind Clinton because of their corrupt network. As far I am concern, Andrew Young doesn’t have a single credibility. His connection with former President of Nigeria speaks a lot about corruption. As a Nigerian American, I can go on and on about his corrupt dealing.

It is time to turn the page.

I guess cooning never goes out of style.

I am DISGUSTED by this guy's comments.

He said, “Bill is every bit as black as Barack.” ???????

Oh Really?

When was the last time Bill Clinton was stopped on the street and harassed by cops for no reason, but of the color of his skin? When was the last time Bill Clinton was given suspicious looks while wandering through a department store, because of the color of his skin? When was the last time an empty cab whizzed by Bill Clinton, because of the color of his skin? When was the last time Bill Clinton was skipped over for a job because of the color of his skin?

Bill Clinton, is a WHITE MALE in america.

Young's comments are awful, he betrays black people all over America by his comments, and i cannot even believe he said them.

The sad things about these comments are that we black people make statements about each other. The white people think or speak statements in the company of each other. If someone of this man position don't understand then how little have we progress

Why credit a person that doesn't know how to use proper language in an interview? This person's assertion that 46 is too young for a president clearly misunderstands Mr. Obama's message about changing the very nature of Washington. Hillary Clinton is much more disliked by her peers and stands to divide the country if elected.

It should be noted that it requires more than a majority to enact any meaningful change in this country. A Hillary Clinton Administration strongly disliked by 47% of the country (more than any of her rivals) is a recipe for a most ineffectual president.

If Hillary Clinton currently holds slightly more black allies, an assertion that cannot be verified in any meaningful way, then that has very little to do with uniting the entire nation. Simply put, if Barack wins the primary, then he is obviously more able to attract support than Hillary.

Do not vote for the campaign based on the notion of inevitability. Vote for the issues. Vote for the best person to lead this nation on the proper path. Most importantly, do not vote for Hillary because you want Bill Clinton as president for you surely will be disappointed.

I know this is politics as usual, but in today's reality Young lacks creditability.

His time has come and gone, and he should feel proud that the sacrifices of his generation have produced a viable African-American candidate.

It's funny how his advice to Sen. Obama to "wait" his turn, is the same line of thinking that he and Dr. King were told 50 years ago.

How quickly they forget.

Obama will be one year younger than Bill Clinton was when he took the oath.

Maybe it's not such a bad thing that Andrew Young isn't backing Obama. I'm not sure that his recent endorsements (including Wal-Mart) reflect well on his judgment.

“I want Barack Obama to be president,” Young said, pausing for effect, “in 2016.”

What a ridiculous statement. Let's wait for the cavalry to arrive while we're at it!

I guess the civil rights era taught Mr. Young how to be a complete idiot in front of the masses. Mr. Young and others like him where nothing more than apes for the governments racist views. We have had many young presidents, one of which made a total mockery of MARRIAGE and HONESTY. If you believe Clinton is black because he has cheated on his wife numerous times with Black women-- you are an IDIOT, Andrew. Plus, we must understand that Andy is getting a little older and actually should not be in politics at all. It is time for us to rid the leadership of our government of senile old fools. Obama we love you and support you....

No more Clinton dynasty and corrupted Health Industry.

!!! VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA !!!

Letter to Andrew Young: You are now 70 years old and by the year 2016 you will be 79. You certainly do not want to see a black person in the White House because you incorrectly think that the United States had already elected a black President in 1992. How strange is to call a white person black? Is this because you do not like your own skin? How sad it is for you to live 70 years under this illusion. Dr. King would have been so ashamed of you for not supporting Obama. In case you have forgotten, let me remind you what Dr. King said: “ I may not be there with you but I see the promised land... “ He was talking about Opra and Obama not you. I feel sorry for you because you have lost. Please, just give it up.

Abi

Unbelievable! Andrew Young's comments are unfortunate--How old was Bill Clinton when he became President? How old was John Kennedy? I believe they were both under 50. If Andrew believes that Obama needs more support why doesn't he just do it? Once and for all I wish Blacks would stop believing that the Clintons have done so much for us--Let's not forget that affirmative action was dismantled under the Clinton Administration.

Truly, guys such as Andy Young are the last vestiges of blacks who beat down other blacks...he is an embarrassment..This is a new day and age when color and youth don't matter...Clinton was the same age as Obama when he ran for the white house...Where was Andy Young then, in the kitchen?

When Senator Obama becomes President he will be four years older than John F Kennedy was when he took office as President.

Another foot in the mouth for the Clinton campaign. Keep 'em coming!

Barack in '08!

Andrew Young is a career politician with an obvious bias for the Clinton cabal.

His phony support for an Obama presidency in 2016 is merely an attempt to trick misinformed black voters into thinking it's okay to vote for Hillary this time around.

And in regards to the old joke that Bill Clinton was the nations 'first black president' and the new joke made by Young that Bill is 'as black as Barack,' i'll quote the South Carolina writer and civil rights man, Kevin Alexander Gray, whom wrote in 2002,

"...the joke's an insult. The punch-line is that Clinton is decadent and promiscuous, got rhythm, got caught and got over -- so he's black!"

In fact, during the 8 years Clinton was in office, the incarceration rates of blacks surpassed the egregious Reagan era.

Although Clinton has since attempted to change the past thru his actions post-presidency, during his reign he continued to support mandatory minimum sentencing, flawed "3 strikes" laws, and did nothing to change the disparity in sentencing between crack and powder cocaine which disproportionately affects African Americans.

These efforts in turn put more black men behind bars than ever before creating a new generation of felons courtesy of our defective war on drugs.

I think Young knows he is too old to run so he is jealous of Obama. Martin Luther King did not wait until he was old enough to start the civil rights movement. You follow your heart. As a black man, I am saying gone are the days where one black person could speak for all black people.

Mr Young go tell your children and grand children they are too young to do samething.

Go Andy! I hope you keep your assanine comments coming from the Clinton side because comments like you have made are not what Obama and supporters endorse. We stand behind an honorable man, something with which you may not be accustomed. You are one of the outstanding examples of the what we are fed up with in America.
Statements coming come from Hillary and the likes of you only solidify my vote for Obama!

Traditional black leaders like Young do not have enough courage to support someone like Obama. Doing that would be suicidal for their economic advancement. I am sure that deep inside he wants to do the right thing but no longer has any courage to look at the Clintons and tell them I'll support Obama. He has gone to far in his negative comments about Obama, but I wonder how would we fare if we were in his shoes.

Barak should be Edwards' VP: Edwards has said that Barak is the kind of person he would be looking for. That would be a great combination: Edwards, and Barak in 2116.

Actually, Obama will be older than Kennedy and the same age as Clinton when he becomes President. Obama was born in August 1961, so will be 46 in January 2008. John Kennedy was 43 when he took the oath of office (born May 1917, inaugeration January 1961). Bill Clinton was 46 (born August 1946, inaugeration January 1993). Ulysses S. Grant was also 46. The youngest man to take office was Theodore Roosevelt; he was 42.

OScar, are you planning on having Barack live a very long life? :) (I'm the last to criticize typing skills)

Simply put...Andrew Young is a SELLOUT! He's afraid of Barack because he won't pander to his "let's march and beg massa for a handout" mentality.

These so-called "black leaders" need to be put out of business.

Mr. Young,
It really sounds like you don't know the difference between age and maturity. Maybe it has taken you a longer time to mature. Maybe a few more years and you want make this type of comment. Why not keep this type of comment to yourself. People would like to continue to respect you. One thing I know is that Mr. Obama will forgive you out of respect. President Clinton is by no means a black man, he is simply a man. Positive and negative qualities or abilities are not limited to anyone gender, race. Mr Obama is going to make a GREAT President. Why do you assume that he is not able to create a team that will do what's best for America.

Maybe Andrew Young should consider that perhaps, he is to old!!!

Old dudes tend to become jaded, alcoholic, or religiously fanatical.

The most unfortunate thing about people like this making comments like these is that some people will actually listen. This man is doing an intense disservice to this country. He's worse than Fox News.

Andrew Young needs to keep his mouth shut. Maybe Mr. Young you are to OLD...not a joke!

It has been about two hundred some years without a black president in the hill. It is time. It's time to have a different face in that Whhite House. It is time for change. A change is not easy...enough persistence will take you there. Black, White, Green, Yellow, and Aliens let's make a conscious effort to elect the best person. Obama is the best choice, my opinion only.

With endorsement like this, who needs enemies? President Carter fired Andre Young from his job as the United States Ambassador to the UN for saying inappropriate things. How many US Ambassadors were fired from their UN jobs? He could not help it. He endorsed Hillary Clinton by reminding us that unfortunate time in her life, her husband’s infidelity plus by introducing a new and unnecessary insult, that her husband might have had affairs with black women, which we knew nothing about. Then he said he was clowning around. Yes, you are a clown. Barack Obama, John Edwards and others are probably happier today that they did not get your endorsements. It is worth nothing because your time has come and gone.

Abi

Civil rights has-been Andrew Young felt the need to explain to the press why he is not supporting Barack Obama. Mr. “Thank you for shopping at the local-economy-destroying Wal-Mart” thinks he still matters. Poor thing.

His arguments?

“Barack Obama does not have the support network yet to get to be president…,” he said. He reflected on his days serving as one of many lieutenants to Martin Luther King Jr.
He also said that while Obama’s rival Sen. Hillary Clinton is surrounded by quite a few black advisors Obama has very few. “To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion,” he said.

Mr. Crab in a Bucket, do you know what might help Obama’s network of support? How about if cowardly, corrupt sellouts such as yourself were to simply keep your mouths shut? And don’t mistake the endorsement of a council of fools for real support. With more small donors than any other candidate in this campaign, Barack has a support network comprised of the people. Remember them? Bro?

Another argument?

He also joked that author Toni Morrison may have been on to something when she referred to former President Bill Clinton as the “first black president.”
“Bill is every bit as black as Barack,” he said. “He has probably gone out with more black women than Barack.”

When would the married Bill Clinton have had time to go out with all of these black women, Mr. Young?

More importantly, how many times do I have to scream this?

BILL CLINTON WAS NOT BLACK.
BILL CLINTON IS NOT BLACK.
BILL CLINTON NEVER WILL BE BLACK!

Who is really behind this repeated claim? This is some b%llshit, and it has got to stop. Now. Just because you play the saxophone and shamelessly, repeatedly cheat on your wife does not make you one of us. It’s one thing for a comic to joke about this. It’s another for a once-respected “black leader” to repeat such nonsense.

And just because you served with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. decades ago does not make you Lord of Blackness. Whether it’s Jesse saying Obama is “acting white” with regard to Jena or this Andrew Jackson Young clown attempting to undermine Obama, we are going to call you on it every single time.

And, Mr. Young, since you think you have some God-granted right of judgment over people’s black credentials, let me declare here and now that you, sir, are no longer black. I hereby revoke your Black card. Hand over your ID. You are barred from the meetings. You lose the right to speak ebonics. Do not pass go. If you are any color, it is green.

You are green with greed that could so blind you to support such a devastatingly destructive company as WALMART in the so-called name of your people.

Mostly, you are green with envy, that someone like Obama makes you look so tacky, so trifling, so out of touch, so transparently lame.

What cracks me up is that Dr. King DIED when he was 39 years old — and he wrote his famous letters from the Birmingham Jail when he was just past 30. In fact, I’d direct Mr. Young to the part in his letter where Dr. King argues against those sympathetic white ministers who kept on telling civil rights activists to “wait” until times were more favorable for protest, and Dr. King said, well, that would mean waiting FOREVER.

Now, over three decades later, and Mr. Young is telling a black man to “wait.” Oh Please.

As a black man I am embarrassed. Once again we have the old black "I's scared to move forward" conservatives who are scared to promote a black man. What does this tell our children? I liked Bill but he is not black, hell..he is from Arkansas.

These so-called black leaders who stay on the porch cannot be trusted!

How "nice" of him to say he wants Obama to be President but that he has to wait a while ..... meaning until after Hillary has had her 2 terms.

Well, Oprah gave him a very direct answer this weekend. If we all waited until our elders said, "OK now you can", many of us wouldn't have pursued our hopes and dreams. It certainly doesn't sound like anything MLK would have said.... but then you are not MLK are you?

Sorry, Mr Young, the baton has been passed, and it's time for you to sit down and encourage those who have the courage to speak the truth!

Whie does the issue of being "too young" continue to be brought up in reference to Senator Obama. He will be 47 years old when the next President is inaugorated.

There have been 8 previous presidents in their 40's when they took office, and 5 of them were younger than Senator Obama will be.

Ulysses Grant - 46
Franklin Pierce - 47
James Polk - 46
James Garfield - 49
Grover Cleveland - 47
Theodore Roosevelt - 42
John F. Kennedy - 43
William Jefferson Clinton - 46

How far can Andrew Young fall? It's time for him to retire before he does more damage to himself and others.

Watch Young's buffoonery on youtube. The video is much worse than what's reported.

Hillary's so-called political network is the "defense committe" of Hillary's friends that she established to fend off attacks from women Bill had been involved with.

As an example of Bill's blackness, he cites that Bill started a soul train line at a party for Nelson Mandela, and that Hillary hiked her skirt and boogied down the line.

Man. Crabs in a barrel.

“I want Barack Obama to be president,” Young said, pausing for effect, “in 2016.”

At age 75 Young should be more concerned about living until 2016.

Young was young once.
He was elected to Congress at age 40, and became UN Ambassador at age 45.

Obama has plenty of life experience, and unlike Clinton he passsed the bar the first time.

Was the comment on 'Bill going with more black women' supposed to be a plus for Hillary? And how is that not offensive to black women or women period?

Young is a senile old crab in the barrel. Uncle Tom is a pejorative for an African American who is perceived by others as behaving in a subservient manner ..., or as seeking ingratiation with them by way of unnecessary accommodation. and Young's comments are unnecessary accommodating...

As African of the age of Andrew Young as well as the great majority of the African population, we understand why Andrew Young and the entire generation of the African American leadership are panicking. They know that the election of Barack Obama as a US president will surely bring to an end to the system of corruption to which they had, for decades in cahoots with and so deeply compromised themselves, (obtaining diamond, gold, money) with the most corrupted and hated African dictators with the late Mobotu topping the list, that the advent of Barack Obama is seen by Andrew Young and his fellows as the most frightening nightmare they could have ever imagined. The Clintons had not only allowed them to pursue their dirty and criminal business in Africa but implicitly condone the policy that starves the African population and plunder the continent riches. Pretending that Obama who is today at the age of other democrat: JFK is not old or experienced enough to lead the USA, is the most nonsensical and stupid argument an African American can make. Oh dear God and the Ancestors of the African American slaves and the legion of the generation of the founders of the AANCP: W.E.B Dubois, Paul Robeson wake up from their graves and help save African Americans from their delusion and help elect Barack Obama to the supreme post, for making __centuries-old dream of millions of slaves massively deported survivors and the contemporary millions of African population __come true!

Young is a senile old crab in the barrel. Uncle Tom is a pejorative for an African American... behaving in a compliant manner ..., or as seeking ingratiation by way of unnecessary accommodation. Young's comments are unnecessary accommodating, he's complying with HRC wishes (to tear down one of his own) and he's trying to win HRC's favor by pleasing her... That is an Uncle Tom!

Young is a moron for making such ugly remarks. He should make a public apology to a whole bunch of folks he insulted in that idiotic statement.

Andrew Young should be ashamed of himself. I've lost my respect for him. Is he on drugs or something?

When I graduated from high school, I wanted to be a pilot in the military, but the year was 1967 and I was black AND female and was thwarted at every turn by everybody of every color and gender. It would be easy for me to be jealous or envious of blacks or women in a later generation who succeeded in becoming pilots. Instead I choose to be proud of them and recognize my contributions in helping pave the way. I suspect Andy Young and Jesse Jackson, with all their talk about "experience" and "blackness", really are just jealous that they have little or no chance of becoming President. Andy because his time has passed and Jesse because no one (except blacks who still see themselves only as victims) would consider him a viable candidate. Shame on them both. I challenge Andy Young to name anything Bill Clinton did for blacks or any other minority while in office. And what experience does Hillary have? Her 7 years in the Senate pandering to extremist conservatives and enabling Bush in his unjustifiable war efforts? 23 Senators and 133 House Members showed enough leadership to vote against the Iraq war. Obama was not in the Senate then, but he showed courage when he spoke out against that war at a time when nearly every newspaper, broadcast network, and politician were all supporting it. That's REAL leadership and that's the kind of person I want as President of the U.S.

I'll advise Mr. Young to go back to his drawing board and attempt to understand what the "fierce urgency of now" is all about. Else, maybe he should take his own advice and wait until 2016 to get old enough to be able to better support Hillary Clinton.

Been with more black women . . . hmmm, it's a good thing Don Imus didn't say that - he'd get fired again!

Andy Young has lost his mind. I just hope as many people who read this insidious quote also read the many posts in reply to this article because America is for Barack Obama. Andy Young is doing what Andy Young does best, looking out for Andy Young. The network he refers to is one that will assure him a job in a Clinton administration and that is all he cares about. His endorsement is worthless. Andy Young better get on board or get out of the way because the Obama train will run him over.

Aside from his excellent qualifications as a human being for carrying out the task of being president, this article highlights the extra benefit that an Obama presidency would mean to US race relations. The most prominent and powerful black man would not be a member of the corrupt, racist, race-baiting power network that Young is outraged Obama doesn't consort enough with. Obama represents the just diminishment overnight of the power of divisive, racist figures like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to speak on behalf of black America, as their "face."

Rather, a man who represents hope, reconciliation, progress, opportunity, dignity, and justice would be the de facto "African American In Chief" and do wonders for perceptions of blacks by both blacks and whites.

Barack Obama should be elected for his qualifications as president alone, and as far as I'm concerned he has more of them than anyone in the race but Joe Biden and John McCain. But as an added benefit what he would represent for the true advancement of African Americans would be of incalculable benefit both in terms of his policies and in terms of his symbolic importance to both blacks and whites alike, because of the combination of his color AND the content of his character.

This discussion reminds me of something I read in the book "A HOPE IN THE UNSEEN." It's a biography about Cedric Jennings, a young black man who made it from Washington DC public schools to Brown University. In the book it describes something referred to as the "crab bucket." It explained that when you put a bunch of crabs into the bucket and one is trying to climb out, the other crabs will grab it and pull it back into the bucket.

Sometimes people don't even realize that they are afraid of other's success because of the fear to be left behind, or, they may just be comfortable with the way things are. Instead of seeing the good that comes from helping others to succeed, they are afraid that others success may set the bar higher and so it does. But isn't that a good thing?

I am saddened by Andrew Young's remarks because they didn't make any sense. However, that being said, this election is putting an end to the myth that all black people are the same-that somehow they are all one big group! The good news is that it is now more evident to those who may not have recognized this before, that African-Americans are just as much individuals as are European-Americans, Asians, or any other ethnic group.

As a European-American married to an African-American I have seen this country through two different sets of eyes. I can tell you that Barack Obama has already changed our country for the better and he's not even president yet. I feel hope for the future of America that I have not felt in years because of the sense of healing Mr. Obama brings to our wounded nation-wounds that go back hundreds of years.

My husband played the organ for some of Martin Luther King's Freedom Rallies in the South. He said he didn't realize as a young person the significance of the history he was witnessing. Now older and wiser, he and I both know that each day as we watch Barack's bid for the presidency that this is history in the making and we are fortunate to see it in our lifetime!

I am so happy people see Andrew Young's comments for the slime that it is. He has fallen so far and if this is all he has to offer it is time for him to move aside permanently.

Mr YOUNG;
In the past, i always admired and respected you.
You stood shoulder to shoulder with MLK. You were on the front line against racism, and injustice. Need i say we are about the same age(68 vs.75)yet your comments about BARACK OBAMA is more than disturbing, it's embrassing to me.
As a candidate for PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA is the best qualified candidate in the running today.
I understand what a man meant many years ago(MALCOLM X) when he called you a "handerchief head".

H.H.

Barack Obama is mature in his mind and spirit. He knows what is destoying this country. It's hard for him to speak in media-friendly sound bites because he deeply understands the complexities of the problems of this nation and world. He has the gifts of truthfulness, honesty, compassion for the powerless, and the personality to attract like-minded people to support him. He is not intimidating, polarizing, or arrogant--rather,he is a natural born leader who is highly intelligent, charismatic, honorable, and wise in his judgments. I am an old white grandmother who hopes enough of my fellow Americans can see what I see in him and will elect him President in 2008.

I think that he's(Young) from the old guard, and is out of touch. Look at the past 40yrs., it's the one's who have so called experience that have gotten us into so much trouble. What America need is a new direction, and insight.

I think Andy Not Young is loosing his mind

I think that Andrew Young's comments are ridiculous! Age, at no time in history, has been an indicator of maturity or experience. There are people far younger than he who are, and exhibit quite a bit, more maturity than Mr. Young in this particular situation. In the words of Aaliyah (Google the name Mr. Young if you are that far out of touch), "Age ain't nothing but a number."

Once, again I am totally, embarrassed at the unprofessonalism of our elders. Mr. Young, you have no right to make such a horrible statement. Why you and the other so-called Black Leaders constantly insists that white is right and by the way remember Ron Brown ?

Andrew Young has a problem with race. Nowonder why he only works with African dictors like Paul Kagame the president of Rwanda who now by UN and Human rights Organization, killed millions of hutu, tutsi and 4 million of Congolese. Andre, what do you care about BLACK people??

Andrew Young, you are a bad boy! Now go stand in the corner for a time out.

Andy Young is at the head of a generation of arrogant and craven black leadership which have done nothing but line their pockets. He hates the new worthy becaause the new is different.

how in the world are we as black people have to stop insulting other black he is not to young mr young

Mr. Young's comments are not we want our children to think. My parents taught me that the sky is the limit. You can be and do anything you set your mind to. Preparation is the key and Mr. Obama has prepared himself well. His time is now not later. How absurd coming from what used to be a well respected black male that African-Americans used to be proud to call one of their own.

I think Mr. Young has an opinion, but lets look at the opinions and comments that are stated above by fellow Americans. Their opinions and comments are Freedom of Speech, which is the American Way, but personally, my opinion is Senator Obama is a young man with a mature mind.
And as for Andy Young; Don't put him out to pasture yet.

wow! I love this. Andy lay off the viagra and red bull. It's blurring your vision. I will keep this in the family if you keep your jokes to your SELF. Oh yeah Go Barack!

I am ashamed of you Mr. Young. How old was Dr. Martin Luther King when you followed him? As a matter of fact, how old was he when he led millions in marches to end segregation. How old was he when he died fighting for CHANGE? (younger than Obama) David in the Bible was keeping the sheep in the field and God made him King over all of his old brothers. I guess you feel that there is nothing to fight for now. Do you think racism has ended? Have you ever wondered how so many polls had Obama leading then at the end Hillary won. How can so many polls be wrong? They weren't wrong with McCain. I guess times have changed and you OLD so call civil rights leaders have nothing to fight for.

"Any Old Excuse" is necessary when one does not want a qualified candidate who HAPPENS to be African/American to run for and possibly BE our next President. A lot of this stuff seems to be coming from the black Southern group of politicos, journalists and pundits. Why is that?

He’s probably gone with more black women than Barack,” Young said of former President Clinton, drawing laughs from a live television audience. Young quickly followed the comment with the disclaimer, “I’m clowning.”

"No Andrew Young you were just cooning"

Such a shame that Soledad O'Brian chose to interview Andrew Young on Dr. King today on the words of Dr.King. Andrew Young spoiled it for me because he has left such a bitter taste in my mouth after his shameful comments about Obama and about black women. It would have been such a moving and far more meaningful show without Andrew YOung. Mr. Young, you have by your words, spoiled something in Dr. King's legacy. I would rather forget that you were with him. I guess you just didn't learn from him, did you? Shame on you.

African-americans do not need White People to parent them any longer. We have the political savvy and the financial resoures to do it ourselves.
Bill Clinton, a hillbilly white male, who hung around black people because the white folks in Arkansas considered his family poor white trash. The same thing happened in NY after his presidency when they wouldn't let him have an office around Central Park. Believe me Harlem wasn't his choice.
As far as Hillary's concerned, the 35 years that she touts includes her strong support and work for Barry Goldwater.

Andrew Young, you should be ashamed of yourself. How can you insinuate that a Bill Clinton a caucassion is every bit as black as Mr. Obama. You are truely troubled. Dr. Matin Luther King, Malcom X and other truely dedicated crusaders are rolling in their graves at your actions. We finally have a bonified qualified candidate that can unit our country as a whole. When will we come together, talk about "Willie Lynch" mentality. Bill Clinton disrespected his wife and his country with Monica Lewinski and others. For you to insult Mr. Obama and your people with that comment is dispicable. Unfortunately your mind is shackled. i always thought you were for the people, but your recent statment has proven the people worong. You disgrace me! You are just as much a sell out as Jessey Jackson, still preaching keep hope alive (after he got paid), but not really "for the people" Also, this race SHOULD NOT, and needs to STOP being about race. Mr. Obama has been promoting a non-racial campaign and had done well until Hillary started playing the race card. What does that tell you. Unfortunantely, we have had 2 Bushes' in the White House, now people want to make another mistake and put a 2nd Clinton in the White House. THIS COUNTRY NEEDS CHANGE AND MR. OBAMA IS THAT CHANGE. WAKE UP - WAKE UP! It is time for us to move forth, time for an African American to help the country, because at least all people will be respected and treated fairly.

Andrew Young, once very respected politician, owes all African-Americans a public apology for his insensitive and foolish comment Bill Clinton being just as black as Obama.

After he does that, he should just go shut up!

Hey Mr. Young, I am so diasppointed in your lack of consideration for Senator Obama. Your comments about his dating record is foolish, and has no beaing on who he is. Furthermore, he is not the youngest president, check the records!

I find it most troubling in this day in age, there are people like Andrew Young and Bob Johnson, who would come out and blatantly disrespect one of our own. I do not understand this way of thinking. It is as though there was no Civil Rights Movement, Malcolm and Martin never were born, no four little girls, no Gandhi, no Mandela, no Garvery, no Evers, no strange fruit, no SNCC, no anything... All we, the descendants of those folks who's backs got broke, who fell down behind the gun smoke, with chains on their ankles and feet, who survived the middle passage, have are these so-called leaders of our community who are practically knocking themselves down to get in line for the wife of a man who sat idly by as 1 million black souls were wiped out in Rwanda. Despite everything, I always liked Bill Clinton but now we have Barack Obama. I grow sick in stomach to think that "leaders" like Andrew Young have the temerity to attempt to persuade black people in this country are black like Bill Clinton. I feel this man for he has run so far from himself that he can't come "black..."

How old we get.

Andy Young the last scene in Miss Jane Pittman; let you know what Bill Clinton will never be a Blackman.

You talk about the man mother race, with your skin color you have some white blood in you.

I always understood that God did not judge ou by our color. Dr. King spoke about the color of one skin.

People like you I call plastic Negro; when is the time.

How much was this character paid, this is why our people, yes I am black can't phantom that maybe its time for a change and a black to be President. This old gaurd of civil rights leaders who have as much of an impact on my generation as a fresh coat of paint on a rusty dodge always fight what doesn't fit into there manner of living. It seems to me that the good Reverand Young, is follow what Booker T. Washington in his debates with Dr. WEB DuBois, and that is "take what the white man gives you" I find his remarks offensive, Bill Clinton did much for blacks in show but hurt us far more than many feel to relize, the tech bubble bursting, cutting different financial aid programs, and then turned around and was labled as the "First Black President" why? Because he fit a stereotype of blacks, he cheated on his spouse and smoked weed, or maybe his love of music or "soul" food. Get with it, look into the details Hillary has a network of political know-it-alls, well these people have to be paid in some way for there giving, don't you think. Obama owes no one anything, whereas having Hillary in office will just bring the political debt of former President Bill Clinton and the mounted debt she has now. OBAMA all the way.

FYI- I first registed as a Republican at the age of 18 and I was born in a ultra-liberal, God fearing, middle-class family. But like most in my generation we don't vote "democrat" because we're "supposed" to but we vote the best person in that can do the job well, although Senator Clinton has leadership qualities I just fail to believe that she will do anything but cause more political strife and damage. Her base are only Democrats, she's very much disliked by Independents and Republicans, but Obama unites all. Then "he's too young" EXCUSE ME!!! So now you have to be old as dirt like Andrew Young to be President? Let's see here, how many Presidents since I have been alive (1985) have been over the age of 60 when they entered office, ummm 2 (Regan & Bush Sr.) which equates to 12 years in office versus the 16 years of (Clinton & Bush Jr.), being that he's well into his golden years, Mr. Young has a old way of thinking but the 46 year old Obama has anew thoughts and methods, vote him in, give him a chance, and if not, well vote him out.

I used to have much respect for Reverand Young but after a showing of such disregard for someone to be President of the United States, due to their age (a discrimination marked as illegal as a by-product of the Civil Rights Act of 1964)is just damning and even more motivation for me to campaign harder of my and all of my friends candidate: SENATOR BARACK OBAMA!

How can you talk Andrew.
Andy you have been a disgrace to black people for a while now. We really wish you would go away and hide from us.

You are like a bad child no one wants to talk about you and no wants you to show up to the house. We have to watch what you say, all the time and someone should wash you mouth out with soap.

What possessed you to make those latest comments I'll nerver know, I am not sure you know why you made them either. If Bill Clinton is blacker than Obama, then Clinton is blacker than you too.

You know the name I want to call you from the hood, that would be too plotically incorrect; so remind yourself of who you really are. You are not allowed in the communnity any longer so you must turn in you Black Man's card right away! Just like a negro who finally earns enough money to live good you turn your back on black men and boys while driving of in your new shinny Black Cadillac.
Peace Out!

The bottom line is Barack Hussein Obama is an African. You know his name is Hussein. African and Caribbean people come to this country with great disrespect for African Americans! Most foreign people are bleeding America!!! Actually I cannot see how it is possible that America at large will elect Hussein Obama being he is son of an immigrant. He has close ties with Africa, it is a conflict of American interest. The Republican party will eat his ass alive!!! There is not way he can win the US Presidency!

Obama is not a native African American. He is just using black people in this country to try to become President of the USA. Obama does not care about native black Americans!

Native black Americans are going to be bamboozled by Obama!!!

African Americans are going to ignorantly vote on someone because of the color of his skin. What hypocrasy!!! What about his middle name (Hussien)? We have been victims to racism for hundereds of years, now They (not me) are going to exercise their right to stupidity themselves. I cannot believe that people like Oprah, Lowery, Jesse, the King Family, many black mayors and others are ignorantly leading blacks to support someone that could give a flip about native black Americans.

Just because he jumps up and runs to Ebenezer Baptist Church means nothing and is so shallow. He never went there until now because he is jusst fooling the blacks.

If you listen closely to the debate, then you can hear Obama's disdain for native blacks. He had the nerve to say stuff like "King understood". This is so condescending and arrogant. Of course King understood he is a world icon! Obama is wet behind the hears and new to this country! Who is he to grade ML King??? He spook of the march on Washington as "that march", not the march or our march. He spook Rosa Parks as "that woman that did not get up on the bus". In all his attempts to make connections to African American history, he put his foot in his mouth. He never said our, us, my, mine, ext. Although he did say our democratic party! Black people are to bent on his darker complexion to discern it!!!

I would suggest that native blacks realize their own talents, intellect, and potential. Then raise our black African American children with the full potential of their abilities through real education and then NOMINATE and elect a real African American for US President!!! Now this is a source of pride!

Take no pride in Barack Obama, he is not African American! His father is African and his mother is white. The American media will definitely not call him white. He, himself, would kill his career if he called himself African. So he settles for African American. Us native black Americans are so naivette and not united that we allow Obama to get away with this, even allow him to use us! Only African and Caribbean people really have true pride in what Obama is doing, bleeding America!

Black Americans are just ignorant about it and will again be used!

All this may be a comment on what tokenism does to people. If there's only going to be one prominent black in some committee or at some level of government, that creates intense competition to be that one person. To her immense credit, Barbara Jordan never allowed herself to think that way. It's sad that Young is the one left speaking for his generation rather than her.

Jordan proves that this kind of backbiting was not inevitable. But certainly it is hard to resist the "crabs in a bucket" problem in minority politics. Even if some crab doesn't believe he can get out, keeping another one down might give him a chance later on to be the token one let out of the bucket.

Of the comments above it may be most worthwhile to pursue the question of how former US officials have dealt with and in Africa.

Obenga says "as a Nigerian American, I can go on and on about his corrupt dealing." Please do! This is the swamp after all. Be not afraid to get stinky...

Mr Young, I am a Black woman and I find your comments to be disresectful and demeaning. What are you trying to say about Black women, correct me if I am wrong but wasn't your mother black, what about your wife and daughter. The comment you made was unacceptable and down right disgusting. You sir, walked side by side with one of the greatest African American men of our time and I would have to ask you to seriously think about how MLK would react to your comments. You have disgraced black men all over his country and you have disgraced yourself I just hope in the mist of your stupidity you can see the era of your ways. I feel that you sir owe Mr. Obama an apology as well as African American women. Lastly, I would suggest you ask Mr. Clinton if he would trade places with you let him be black one day and then you can see how eager he is to be black.

Andrew Young's slimey remarks about Obama are appalling. I have thought this ever since I learned from friends who organized a YMCA conference that he spoke at. They told me he had a woman come to his room for the night even though he was married.

I think Young is a third beneficiary of the civil right movement. Carefull reading of his book : An easy Burden shows abundant evidences of his unwillingness to stick out his head for matches when MLK and others were doing so.Moreso, after the death of MLK, the battles he fought did not cease. What made Young passive. MLK will turn in his grave to see Young's comment about the first ever black man with bright chances of making the white house. Its highly disappointing that Young did not think that Bush and Clincton 46, when they vied for the white house were young then. I think he is afraid of the rise of new generation of black Americans.

Why continue to flog a person just because he makes comments that you do not accept? I personally never knew Andrew Young, although I taught his wonderful daughters years ago. But since that time, he has become an older American who says things without thinking. Obama may not be too young in years; however, I believe his lack of experience in government may limit his ability to function as an effective president (although he certainly would be better than our present president).

hmm i agree with most people. look at our president, look at his age and look at how bad we are doing! this isnt about age, its about the mans capability of leadership, and he is very well prepared to be the next president. mr.young seems like he doesnt want obama to be president, and the whole age thing is just a rather stupid excuse.

mr. young you sound like a slave, who dont want to leave the master you a dr.king was 30 something when you took on jim crow

Andrew Young is one of the many reason we as black people need new and young back leadership. I was alway told to respect my elders, but I lost all respect for Andrew Young and his comments. What an embarrassment to Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, by stepping on one to promote the other. Obama understands the Dream better than Andrew Young!
What a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama for all the people in 08!! Stand up for what is Right; stop accepting the OKY DOKE!!!!
