The Swamp

by Christi Parsons and John Chase

WEST DES MOINES--They came to hear Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee speak, but first the crowd of hundreds had to sit through a soft-sell pitch on the wonders of multi-level marketing.

For half an hour, two businessmen paced the stage where Huckabee would soon stump. They never said the name of the company during their talks, but afterward some members of the crowd shared with others the good news of a company called Quixtar Inc.

Quixtar is a sibling company of multi-level marketing giant Amway – and, according to Huckabee's public schedule, the host of the event.

"We found out later from a friend it was some kind of Internet marketing thing," said Bill Evanich, an avid Huckabee fan who attended the evening event late last week. "I thought it was political, and that we'd get to ask questions."

The candidate said Saturday that he thinks the hosts were "a great group of folks" and that he believed a lot of them were "part of that network," but he said he isn't formally associated with them in any way. He said he wasn't paid to speak there.

"I wish I had been," said Huckabee. "That was a great group of people."

They clearly liked him, too. At least a thousand people crammed into a ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel, many of them saying they'd turned out strictly to hear the former Arkansas governor and ordained Baptist minister now soaring in the polls.

Later, organizer Mike Waechter said the people who put the event together know each other through Quixtar, but that the company neither sponsored the event nor endorsed Huckabee. He said Alticor, the Quixtar and Amway parent whose founders have a history of conservative activism, also wasn't implying any endorsement.

"We were just there as citizens of Iowa, wanting to talk about what makes our country and Iowa great," said Waechter, a business owner with Quixtar. "I don't think people were misled . . . Some people left saying they liked everything about it. They enjoyed it, every part of it."

In the Sheraton ballroom, many of the attendees, Quixtar participants and other invitees, were clearly behind Huckabee. Several said they plan to raise their hands for him when the Iowa caucuses convene on Thursday. And they didn't want to pass up the chance to hear him speak.

But that took some time. The Huckabee schedule said he would appear at 8 p.m., but Joe Markiewicz and Larry Winters began talking at 7 p.m. about how important financial security is to the cause of freedom. A series of motivational speakers followed.

Even in a free country, said Winters, "if you don't control your family finances, you're not in control of your personal freedom."

He was working in a car wash when he met a Christian businessman who helped him turn his life around, Winters said.

Working for that kind of liberty, he said, is "what Joe Markiewicz has done with his life."

In turn, Markiewicz praised Winters, whom he described as his business partner, for helping him achieve success.

Quixtar owners get a percentage of the on-line sales of various products, but that didn't come up until audience members spoke of it later.

Chuck Hoop, a Quixtar member who drove from Cedar Falls for the rally, saw the event as a discussion of freedom and liberty.

"All the people who were invited to speak were there to talk about the direction the country was headed," he said.

Kim Evanich didn't come to hear them, though.

"We just had to get through that," she said, "to hear Huckabee."

So you're saying Huckabee's surge is from a Pyramid Scheme?

It's 8:45 PM EST.
Nothing has posted in 4 hours.

How come the very few wing nuts that post here always have their a-hole comments about the Dems, but never have anything to say about their own candidates?

Tells me a lot!

How come we always have to sift through put-downs, garbage, personal agendas, and misleading information from journalists before we can find out what happened at an event?

Can Fred come speak at my Tupperware party?

Amway is a BIG Republican company. I remember my sponsor gushing about an Amway event years ago where Ollie North was the keynote speaker. I think multi-level marketing is great, if you can stomach the rah-rah and Republican leanings.

Tim Russert went very easy on Pastor Huckabee on Meet the Press today. This proves that Pastor Huckabee is the choice of g-d. Pastor Huckabee has the foreign policy experience to clean up the mess in Pakistan and elsewhere with one swipe of his mighty arm. For example, Pastor Huckabee punctuated a point about having John Bolton as his foreign policy advisor the other day by discharging his shotgun over the reporters' heads. In the ensuing melee, he didn't have time to mention that he is also advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The other thing that has not been mentioned is an explanation of Pastor Huckabee's comment about Pakistanis entering the US illegally. What Pastor Huckabee probably meant was that rather than coming in from Mexico, the Pakistanis are smuggled in by cargo containers originating from the so-called geographically shared eastern border with Afghanistan. This would make sense because, as Pastor Huckabee mentioned, martial law is being enforced in Pakistan, so that everyone else must remain inside their homes which would allow terrorism suspects to slip into the containers unnoticed for transport to the US. Yes, Pastor Huckabee apologized for the Pakistani affair, but he did that because he is a true Christian and that is what Christians do. And since he has a theology degree and as he mentioned, most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were clergymen, it carries extra weight with Christians, so he was able to raise $89,000 in the one day 'money bomb' on December 27. Pastor Huckabee also knows that we must protect Israel at all costs for it is in the Bible. Oh, how happy everyone will be when Pastor Huckabee is president and puts the Christ back into Christians!

Let's not forget Joe Markiewicz and Larry Winters are a couple of lying cowards, as they DO NOT make most of their money from Quixtar, but for the "educational tool systems" they push.

"In the ensuing melee, he didn't have time to mention that he is also advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev."

You mean "oil for food" Kofi and Gorby, the green one-world religionist?

I don't think I would advertise Kofi and Gorbachev as positives for Huckabee. They are of the same ilk as Clinton, Gore, and Kerry.

I did the whole Amway thing for quite a while before I realized it brazenly uses greed and conspicuous consumption with a healthy dose of materialism and Calvinism cloaked in the mantle of marriage counseling to motivate people to recruit, buy and sale. It represents a hijacking of Christian values at its worst. I would rather have a preacher pass the plate and drive a mercedes than get duped by these folks.

DLounsbury, why do you hate a business opportunity you clearly lack an understanding of? Motivating people to recruit, buy and sale is evil? Well, then I guess business ownership and mentality are both evil. Being evil you MUST stop going to Walmart and buy with cash because when Walmart sells, it makes you buy by ripping you off of your money! You see, Walmart is A SCAM!

Tex, what are you complainig about? The "educational tool systems" scam? I thought that the system is in place to provide one with knowledge and inspiration. It's been around for decades and will continue to be. If it was a scam, it would be out of business. Clearly, it isn't. Those who complain about it are also the ones who complain about the Quixtar business for personal reasons and not because there is indeed something wrong with the business. They just think there is and make it sound credible.

Yes, I know what you are talking about and witnessed that myself. But, it shouldn't give MLM a totally bad name. It can be a great way for people to motivate themselves and create their own business. You have the ability to build according to your own principles and goals.

PYRAMID SCEME!!! as you can see chris has been brainwashed by there motivational tool system. huckabee is a perfect match for the Right Wing conservative nuts apart of the Church of Larry Winters. i wonder how much it cost to attend that rally...

Larry Winters and LTD are a bunch of scammers who openly violate Quixtar rules of conduct. From Quixtarfacts.com:

"As always, Quixtar Independent Business Owners are free to have their own political views and to support the political parties and candidates of their choice. The Quixtar business podium should never become a platform for the promotion of political causes not related to the business or other issues of an intensely personal nature. The Corporation has rules in place prohibiting this type of behavior to ensure that people with differing beliefs are not turned off by or turned away from the Quixtar business opportunity because they perceive it to be limited to only those of like mind on certain issues. "

They used their Quixar association to preach from the podium. Will Quixtar punish them? Probably not.

Cris,

I am complaining about the liars and cowards that Joe and Larry are. Have you been keeping up with what is happening in the UK? The government has essentially shut down the tool scams there, BWW even pulled the plug, and N21 has "promised" to exist if Amway is shut down (what a joke, why would they stay if Amway were shut down?). The tool scam days are numbered in the U.S. as well.

I don't mind the training and motivation, it is the lies regarding the source of income for the "kingpins" (and associated losses by the rest of the IBO's) that is the issue with the tool scam.

Funny how LTD is moving forward with the accredidation process.

That will shut up a lot of negative people out there. Then they'll have to get together to formulate a new gameplan on how to attack.

My name is Jeffrey and I live in Des Moines, Iowa and I am also a Quixtar Business Owner (IBO # 222639.) I do not endorse nor condone the type of thing that went on at the Huckabee meeting, nor do I build the business the way the above mentioned people do. I have always built my business on person-to-person referrals and by building a large retail business and helping others to do the same. I do not participate in the Amway/Quixtar tool system because I think it is misleading. I am also NOT a Republican. I am a proud Libertarian. I am for Ron Paul because he wants to end the Bush/Cheney Iraq war. If "Pastor" Huckabee is really a Christian--why does he support the war that has cost nearly 4,000 Americans their lives? I will apologize to everyone who attended that meeting on behalf of the Amway/Quixtar business, because what people saw there does not represent MY business.

Larry and Joe have the same rights as anyone else. If you wanted to organize a rally to support Your favorite candidate, that would be Your right! The rally was not a "Quixtar meeting". Quixtar & Alticor had nothing to do with the meeting, it was organized by Mike, Joe & Larry.
They are also entitled to their opinions. If Larry wants to open for Huckabee and talk about his views of America and financial freedom, guess what- that's his right.
I also think its pathetic that we had read thru an obvious bias from a "journalist" to find out what finally happened. Funny how he did the samething he bashes Joe and Larry for :/
As for the MLM bashing. If it's not for you, stay away. But get over. Quixtar is a good company. If you don't like the tools, like the IBO above, stay away. I personally am not on a "weekly CD" program, though I do utilize some CD's.

But I think its pathetic that people are bashing these LTD leaders for holding an event for a candidate they support.

Oh, and please learn the definition of "pyramid scam" - Quixtar is Not a pyramid scam, just call the BBB. Seriously, call them.

Well now we know the Huckster is part of Scamway.
You are judged by the company we keep. Clinton. Edwards. Obama. are paid Hacks of the Union thugs. Clinton money comes from China Intellegance agents. Buyer beware.

Every person who ridicules and throws critiscm for an organization who offers higher income to the average American and a means of generating commerce and now complains about it couldn't make it as a business owner if they opened their own lemonade stand. You are quitters, and couldn’t hack it; quick trying to say otherwise. Business owners through Alticor are some of the finest people in the world who stand for things this country have forgotten what matters most.

Complain as much as you wish; but every person reading this knows weak compromising people, like liberals, will never know the value of true integrity, character, and morality issues this country stands upon. Their meaningless statements that are so-called critiscm sits extremely low in the minds of men with honor and integrity. Yet, the worst thought is that most liberals have gone so far against America, they are threading a fine line of becoming internal terrorist, and most are brain-washed so far that they do not even realize it. Become strong, I urge. You all know what is right and what is wrong. We should not have to make some of you aware vocally because of your own increased stupidity.

Some of these people leaving comments are a bunch of jokers. Its easy to complain and speak negatively about something that you quit. Notice how they say I tried that. Exactly, You tried and you quit. YOU ARE QUITTERS! So please dont complain.. P.S Quixtar ROCKS!!!!!!

I'd like to know what some of you guys bashing Quixtar do for a living. That way, I can laugh at the pyramid system you're so deeply stuck in :) Seriously, I've been "brainwashed" by Quixtar for years and I'm loving every minute of it!

FYI, If anything it shows that Quixtar has a great reputation as an organization if they can arrange for a Presidential Candidtate to come speak for them. I'm sure that he'd do a speech for something that screwed people over :)

suckas

**ATTN IBO'S** We were very loyal IBO'S and had large legs in Amway/Quixtar. We always ran an honest business. We were very dissapointed (and later angry) when we found out about the "tools business" and how it was not part of Quixtar but was an illegal side business. We felt like "quitters" and felt "negative" when we dared to feel betrayed by these people. My husband had known our upline Emeralds and Diamonds his entire life and they taught his sunday school class! This company is not Christian. They don't have salvation of any sort in mind. We were deceived. I ask you to please ask questions and read up about lawsuits and personal testimonies on the internet. If someone tells you to not read up on this, they have something to hide. Dont believe for a minute that you are wrong in questioning Quixtar. Unless you are not able to think for yourself???? Start here http://www.merchantsofdeception.com/index.html

I pray that you find the truth and don't blindly have faith in these people.

While I think some people in Qx may push the tools a little too hard, the "tools" themselves are not "illegal", and while it may not have been publicized back in the 80s/90s, "tool profits" have been out in the open (even in the Plan) for some time now.
They are optional, and IBO's need to remember that. You cannot require them to get your help. They can be useful, I do buy some of them, I used to be on a weekly CD program, but am not right now.
You should always question what is being promoted to you, its OK to ask "why" or "whats the benefit" - if you don't agree, don't do it.

To all of you who think that Joe Markiewicz or Larry Winters are trying to hide anyting, listen up! They do not hide that they make money off of tools. In fact, the new CD that came out last week discussed how they do! I am looking forward to doing so myself some day. When I went to a private college it cost me 32k per year and I didn't learn ANYTHING of value. The CDs cost $8 a piece and have helped my life immensely more than my college education ever did. Also, even though my business isn't that big yet, it has already saved a marrige, prevented a suicide, and given me the opportunity to lead a couple of people to the Lord. (Because they wanted to, not because they were forced to!)

Listen, any organized entity is a pyramid. The US military is one with the president on top. Target is, with the CEO on top. Churches are, with the pastor on top. The difference here is that you can make a lot more than the people above you if you work harder, unlike at your job. So STOP complaining and go kiss up to your boss. You'll be relying on him for your paycheck until you are old retired.

-MNMatt

Give it up AMBOTS!! The business is a scam. Get out before it's too late! The tools business is illegal and is also the source of most of the income for the higher pins.

To all of the negative bloggers out there:

All of the Diamonds and other pins with LTD and every other organization out there all started at the same place..0 PV ..They were willing to do what most people were not and therefore have what they have as a byproduct of hard work. Free Enterprise baby!!!! They took advantage of it. Tools Schmools. They are part of an education system that you will never get at any university. LTD is life university. Its up to you to make it happen. Weak people make excuses for their own shortcummings so to all the "QUITTERS" out there. Get a dream and have fun kissing your boss for the next 40 years..

-QUIXTAR ROCKS!!!!!!!

anonymous "They were willing to do what most people were not and therefore have what they have as a byproduct of hard work."

You mean they were willing to deceive people to make their fortunes?

My day of freedom will be here
while the rest of you will be working! and i will smash my alarm clock and say no more! monday will become a holiday!
join the freedom movement!

We used to be in Quixtar. The biggest problem we have with Quixtar is their new rules that if you are in any other direct selling business then they kick you out. I used to not believe that. I thought that was a lie but a friend of mine had to resign because he got into something else and he was a direct in Quixtar. What a shame, after all those years I committed to it!! I am in another network marketing business now and very happy.

LTD was not braking any rules with Quixtar. Read the full terms and rules. It's talking about at LTD-based workshops and functions. Not your personal life. While those great people are a part of Quixtar, Quixtar (just like any other company) cannot and does not tell you what you can and cannot do in your personal life. They had every right as an American to be up there. Just like you have the right to be an idiot.
Also, yes, they do make money from the selling of tools. But guess what, they will even tell you them self. But before you get mad, think about how much money a Q-12 platinum makes. They make $52,000 plus a yearly bonus of $20,000 not including any other bonuses (including the selling of books, CDs, etc). So while money may be made off of CDs, that doesn't change the fact that there is money be made, even for the little guys. Tell me that an extra $72,000 this year wouldn't change anything for you. Why don't you get your eyes off of other people's money and start taking care of your own family. I don't hear you crying about all the money Sam Walten's kids make from Wal-mart. Quixtar is just an online store. And from some, they choice to start their own business selling the products. If you don't want to, great. But don't force me to do they same crap as you.
You should take the time to learn what a pyramid is. Your job is a pyramid, the government is a pyramid, the church is a pyramid, the military is a pyramid, McDonald's is a pyramid. A pyramid is the strongest business model because you can't have 100 CEOs and only 5 employees. Now when you think of pyramids, you think of a corporate pyramid where your stuck at the bottom and never move up. A bid like your job. Listen, there a million different was to make money. Quixtar is just one way. If that's not for you then great, I hope the best for you. But you can't sit there and say that a company that's been around for 50 years, has great standing with the Better Business Burro, and made almost $7,000,000,000 isn't making money for anyone. Quixtar is simply a business. That's all.

I am really disappointed to see Huckabee associating with this group of liars and money greedy wanna-be Christians. I used to be in Quixtar and drank the Kool-aid like the rest of them until one day my best friend finally pointed out all the wrong things we were doing. They do make very little money off the products and they make all their money from the educational system they cram down your throat to buy. Do they tell you that up front...no...you don't find that out until you get into the exclusive club. That is why they are being sued all the time and that fact that Quixtar is going back to Amway so they can make Winters Mark. stop selling all the materials. That is also why Larry is really thinking about leaving Quixtar because his group is not the accredited list or recognized by even Quixtar as a valid group. Once again I was a supporter of Huckabee, but now that he associates his self with fake christians and greedy businessman he just lost my vote.
