The Swamp

Today’s New York Times/CBS News poll might as well be a big stick, the way Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign is trying to bludgeon Sen. Barack Obama with it.

The poll found more than double the voters—83 percent—thought Clinton was prepared to be president compared with 41 percent for Obama.

Because the poll was such good news for Clinton during a period in the campaign when we in the media have been focusing on her perceived vulnerability, the Clinton campaign quickly pulled together a teleconference today for reporters in which some of her congressional supporters said, no surprise here, that they, like all those voters, thought she wasn’t just the best prepared but the most electable of the Democratic candidates too.

Here’s a representative quote from Sen. Evan Bayh, the Indiana Democrat, who has been won five state-wide races in a Republican state:

“I come from a place where a keen understanding of how independents and moderate Republicans vote is important and based upon my experience and that understanding I think Hillary Clinton has the best chance of being electable in swing parts of the country.

She's strong, tough and experienced, said Bayh, who then took a seeming swipe at his other Senate colleague, Sen. Barack Obama. Said Bayh:

The Oval Office is not the place for on-the-job training,”

No names were mentioned but everyone knew who he was talking about.

Mark Halperin of Time Magazine’s “The Page” gave Bayh a chance to go further in this direction. But Bayh refused to be pinned down by Halperin who demanded a yes or no answer. Halperin must've thought he was talking to the newly taciturn Sen. Joe Biden.

HALPERIN: “I know you all think that Sen. Clinton would be the best (word garbled) but let ask you to answer a question that she’s avoided answering, do you think Sen. Obama is qualified from day one to be commander-in-chief? If answer is yes, please say so, and if you don’t respond, I’ll assume the answer is no, if that’s OK.”

BAYH:

“Mark, this is Sen. Bayh, do you want me to take a stab at your question?” Bayh said.

HALPERIN: “Yes, sir, it’s really simple yes or no.”

BAYH: “This is an election, right, which just means you have absolute standards which I guess is what you’re asking about, but then you have relative capability. The direct answer would be, your question is he capable of being commander-in-chief?

HALPERIN: Is he qualified to be commander-in-chief right now?

BAYH: The decision is whether there’s somebody else better able to be commander in chief from day one? And I think that’s the judgment many of us have reached about Sen. Clinton. And I think you can make that judgment without disparaging Barack Obama. There’s just an experience in that regard.

STEPHANIE TUBB JONES: This is Congresswoman Tubb Jones. I don’t think when you’re talking about the commander-in-chief of the United States of America we can just say a yes or no answer on that particular case.

She'd be the most ready to divide this country even further.

Hillary couldn't even take care of her perv husband and failed with her healthcare reform, if she was never married to B.J. she'd wouldn't even be in the senate...Hillary Rodham who!
And Barack is in the senate because of a Jack Ryan sex scandal dug up by The Tribune.

What has either one done on their own?
Answer...N-O-T-H-I-N-G!

Atleast John Edwards lost his own state in 2004 because he did something.

This is total BS.

The Bush/Cheney team had all the experience in the world and look at the fine mess they've made of our country and others (Iraq).

I would expect stupidity like this from the crazy Republicans but not from a fellow Democrat.
C'mon Hillary, you can do better than this.

Cheney and Runsfeld had lots of "experience". It can be overrated.

Here are some questions all candidates should have to answer:

If warned of an impending terrorist attack on the US, would you ignore it?

Would you take a full month of vacation every summer, and refuse to come off vacation when warned of an impending terrorist attack or an impending deadly hurricane?

If a US city is destroyed by a storm, would you see that is is rebuilt within 1 year?

If buildings are destroyed by terrorists, would you see that they are replaced within 1 year?

Do you believe being trillions of dollars in debt is good or bad?

Have you read the Constitution? Do you understand it?

Abraham Lincoln got on the job training in a situation a lot more dire than the one we're in now. He seemed to do alright. What we need are competent decisions based on facts. We saw that Hillary couldn't be trusted to make competent decisions when she voted to authorize the war in 2002.

Hillary Clinton has 35 years of experience to inform her understanding of what others think she should do. I'd prefer a president who thinks for him/herself.

Also, why is it that Clinton feels the right to play the electability card when Obama polls the best with republicans of any democrat?

What is with Swamp? How is a supporter saying Hillary is strong, tough and experienced taking "swipe" at Obama? Bayh even goes out of his way to say that his belief that Hillary is better prepared is not to "disparage Obama". What a cynical and dishonest attempt to paint Hillary as campaigning negatively -- just because she says she feels she better prepared and she points to a poll that seems to suggest democrats agree with her.

I await a similar article accusing Obama of "bludgeoning" Hillary the next time he says (as he constantly does) I feel I can unite the country better than any other candidate in the race.

You guys at Swamp are ridiculous. It's clear from your own transcript that you unsuccessfully went out of your way to try to find anything -- ANYTHING --negative in a positive new conference, with Halperin going out of his way to try to get Bayh to knock Obama. Thank goodness he saw through you and your ridiculous effort to get a negative soundbite.

Sick. Swamp is really going too far. You're not even trying to hide your bias at this point. So now anytime someone endorses Hillary saying they believe she's prepared to lead on day one, we are to take that as negative campaigning I suppose.

There are seven other Democrats in this race, so why does Swamp not assume she was "bludgeoning" any one of them instead? I know why: because Swamp is implicitly admitting that Obama IS the least prepared of the lot.

GARBAGE. Note to U.S. citizens: any article that uses the word "bludgeons" to describe politics is just another distraction brought to you by political writers with nothing better to do than provide a useless commentary on the horse race.

People: this election is really important. please think for yourself, and vote for someone you believe in.

Obama ain't no Lincoln

rude, insulting obama supporters have driven me so against the guy

ANYBODY BUT OBAMA!!

Seymour, think for yourself and don't get driven by anyone.

A Democrat 08!

Obama is still buried in the national polling. Even if he pulls off a miracle and squeeks by to win in Iowa, BO is going nowhere. Frankie's post smacks of panic.

What will Hillary do when she wants to nail voters? Ask Bill. When she wants to win Iowa? Tell Bill. When she is desperately going under the polls? Get Bill. When Gennifer Flower want to vote for her? Kill Bill.

Perhaps he wanted more to be "First Gentleman" than Hillary wants to be President.

Enough of Billary. America has enough. The world has enough.

Fresh, Decent. Go OBAMA.

"Seymour, think for yourself and don't get driven by anyone.

A Democrat 08!"

Sorry Keith. The zeal of this local rag's biased and unfair coverage of Obama vs. Hillary is turning even those of us who would naturally have an affinity for Obama against him. At this point at best, I will sit out the general if he's nominated. At worst, well...

I understand Seymour's sentiments completely.

"IT'S THE BEST OF THE BEST HERE, BOTH HAVE THE AMERICAN IDEALOGY THAT CAN TAKE US TO A NEW PLATEAU, MAYBE NOT THE MOUNTAINTOP, BUT PRETTY CLOSE."

We definitely will have to be not only politically savy, military savy, but most of diplomaticaly savy in the years to come.

I would love to see them both, because for once, probably since the beginning of these united states we can bring together color!

As americans we have always associated color to two colors, black and white. So by bringing them together, we can have a comprehensive healing in America.

Our children deserve it!

MJ: national polls have only correctly predicted the democratic nominee TWICE since 1972.

I'd put good money on Obama in Iowa and South Carolina. Thi is going to be a contest. All this bickering about polls and electability is worthless. We should be talking about vision, integrity, judgement, experience, and leadership. Not in the context of the simple "Black and White" narratives the campaigns and media shove down our throats, but as a meaningful conversation between people who share a common stake in the future.

This is OUR country. We get to decide. We need to choose our leader, not a winner.

We "sat on the fence" so to speak, not knowing who to put our support behind. We have followed the Democratic candidates pretty closely or as much as we have time for. We also attended an Obama event in Brooklyn.

When all is said and done; at the end of the day; in this eleventh hour before Iowa, we have to support and vote for Hillary. Just read her resume - wikipedia has it as well as other sources on the web. The woman has never stopped working for others for the past three decades, and then some.

We also truly appreciate that for every single proposal Hillary has, she is able to say exactly how she will pay for it.

Obama and Edwards just don't pay enough attention to fiscal matters - I don't see any fiscal responsibility coming from them.

And also Obama's healthcare plan will simply not cover everyone.

Hillary has what it takes,at ever level, to be our next President.

Biggdawg,

I started out a a Clinton supporter. I loved the Clinton years, there was peace in the world (relatively), investments went to research, not war...and many other reasons.

Hillary has turned me away. I was stunned when she voted for Iran. As a woman, I am insulted at the way she has run her campaign. As I've looked at her experience, it doesn't really hold up.

While I am an Obama supporter, my reaction to Hillary does not come from Obama, he tries to get people to focus on the politive aspects of who he is and not attack.

My reaction to Hillary comes from the anger I feel toward how she has behaved: not reading the intelligence, voting with the polls, using sexism in her campaign, etc.

I think some of the intensity also comes from the reaction to Bush, and how important people feel it is to pick the right leader.

It's good to have people engaged. With the web, we, the citizens, can stand up to the media and the machines for the first time. We can dispute the spin, and point out the lies. Sadly, Hillary has given us alot to talk about.

The print media doesn't give us the right bandwidth to discuss it, and it's easy to launch into emotional reacations, and it's easy to misread posts. The nytimes covered this in an article.

Please, look at the candidates and judge for youself.

Medicine might help. Might.

Sleeping in the White House does not count for experience. We are a representative democracy - not a monarchy. Are you Looking to 'reap' eight more years of nepotism like the seven we've just had ? Not me.

Although her sputtering machine would have us believe that she is the 'electable' choice - this argument falls unquestionably flat - she will drive more republicans to the polls and does not inspire confidence in her own party... go look at the polling yourself.

I voted for this lady in her NY senate race.
I voted for her husband twice (would have again).... but ignoring all conviction and tri-angulating her response to Bush's rush to 'war' in Iraq was and is unforgivable. Afghanistan,as any a monkey knew, was and is a noble cause. If a person in her position could not figure out what was happening with our rush to a false war- in Iraq - then whatever limited experience she does have - counts for very little.
Worse yet, and far more likely, she knew exactly what was happening... she crunched the numbers and made what turned out to be a bad bet - IRAQ. Ooops! And now we're stuck with what is partly the mess of her making. I will NOT ever vote for anyone who supported the Iraq ruse.

Fool me once...

So NO Thanks Mama - I'm for Obama !

Barak Obama for President of the United States of America .

-Go Barry !

I've got to chime in here and say how absolutely disgusted I am by some of the comments here.

When someone refers to PRESIDENT Bill Clinton as Sen. Clinton's "perv husband", and then tells us they prefer another candidate they do a MAJOR disservice to that candidate.

Seriously - if that's the kind of hope and change sen. Obama inspires in his supporters you can keep it.
