MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The man who serves as Sen. Hillary Clinton's national and New Hampshire co-chairman resigned from the campaign today, one day after he raised questions about Sen. Barack Obama's use of marijuana and cocaine as a high schooler.

Clinton apologized to Obama in person this morning, but the incident raised the friction level between the two campaigns, which are fiercely battling for first place in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

In a statement released by the Clinton campaign, Bill Shaheen said Clinton is running a positive campaign and he does not want to detract from her work on issues important to American families.

"I made a mistake and in light of what happened, I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign," he said. "This election is too important and we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country. That candidate is Hillary Clinton."

On Wednesday, Shaheen questioned Obama's ability to prevail in a general election, saying that Republicans would attack him for his admissions of past drug use. In his memoir, "Dreams From My Father," Obama recounts using marijuana and cocaine when he was a teenager.

"It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'" Shaheen told The Washington Post. "There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome."

The Clinton campaign said it had nothing to do with Shaheen's comments and Shaheen expressed regret Wednesday night for making them.

But his salvo came on the same day that a new CNN/WMUR poll showed that Clinton's lead in New Hampshire had vanished and that she was statistically tied with Obama. It also followed a new line of attack by the Clinton campaign portraying Obama as virtually unelectable because of his ostensibly shifting positions and liberal stances.

David Axelrod, Obama's media strategist, said the two candidates had a good exchange when they saw each other at the airport in Washington, D.C. before heading to Iowa for The Des Moines Register debate.

"What he said was it's important for campaigns to send the signal from the very top that this isn't tolerated," Axelrod said Obama told Clinton. "You cannot say that negative campaigning attacks are the 'fun part' of the campaign and then expect people down the line to take a signal that this isn't OK."

Mark Penn, Clinton's pollster and top campaign adviser, said Clinton told Obama that Shaheen's remarks had no place in her campaign.

"From the first moment, she felt this was inappropriate and would not be part of the campaign and she took the additional step on the tarmac this morning of apologizing," Penn said.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign seized on the incident to raise money, imploring its supporters not to stand for attacks on Obama's character.

The Internet plea for money said Clinton's "top advisor in New Hampshire tried to recycle old news by smearing Barack for experimenting with drugs as a young man--something Barack candidly wrote about years ago in his memoir and has since talked about with young people in an effort to teach them the lessons he learned from his mistake." Obama's website called for 5,000 people to make donations in the next 24 hours.

Axelrod said those funds are important to ward off future attacks on the candidate.
"I think if people want to bring about the kind of change that he's talking about, that we're talking about, we're going to need the resources to combat that," he said.

Axelrod also said that Obama didn't sell or share drugs.
Shaheen is a lawyer and longtime political activist in the state, having led both John Kerry and Al Gore's primary campaigns here, as well as participating in many others, including Jimmy Carter's 1976 upset and Gary Hart's 1984 victory. He is married to Jeanne Shaheen, the former governor who is challenging Sen. John Sununu for his Senate seat.

Earlier Thursday, Obama's New Hampshire co-chairman expressed skepticism that Shaheen's words were not coordinated with the campaign since it followed several other incidents, including an email in Iowa saying that Obama is a Muslim. He is, in fact, a Christian.

"People can connect the dots. We're just saying, 'Stop doing this,' " Ned Helms, state co-chair for Obama, said in an interview before Shaheen's resignation. "You can't continue to have events like this followed by 'This wasn't authorized.' The campaign has choices to make."

I hope this is a wake up that it is not good to do anything to win at any cost...


This is insane. He stated the obvious. The Republicans will chew Obama up on this and on stuff he hasn't even done. They don't care about hurting poor little Obama's feelings. They made a war hero look like a coward the last time -- and won -- remember?

Republicans have been bashing Hillary during this campaign and for over decade and a half and still she polls strongly against any of them. They haven't even mentioned Obama or Edwards, yet they aren't doing much better than Hillary against them.

Are Democrats really willing to bet either Edwards or Obama will be polling as strongly against Republicans in November '08 if they've been subjected to the same lies, innuendo, and slime they've thrown at Hillary this election cycle, much less over a decade? Give me a break.

Man, I hope we don't fall into the American Idol, celebrity worship thing and just blow this one. I can't believe this....


Ha Ha. Hillary, when you get down in the slime with the Republics, it will eventually get on you too. Mark Penn is a bad man, and this is a repudiation of his slimy politics.


Something else i want to post: So what exactly is wrong about smoking pot? It hurts no one except the user and is nobody's business except their own. Let's drop these 'gotcha' moments because most normal Americans have smoked a joint in their day. Drop it Hillary!


Mrs. Clinton is doing more planting than a farmer in May. She and her herd planted the questioner on CNN, the questions also on CNN, the queries about Obama's religion, the "report" about a "theme" Obama wrote in kindergarten, and now, his long-ago admitted drug use as a teen. Sound familiar? The Clintons telegraphed it two weeks ago when a top Democrat told columnist Robert Novak that the Clintons had a scandal about Obama to reveal. It's all part of the Clintons' trash tactics that pass for a campaign.

Hmmm... seems to me that the Clinton campaign is still about the politics of personal destruction. That's doesn't seem like much of a change to me.

On the flip side, Obama HIMSELF has to squash this allegation and vehemently deny the charge that he sold drugs. It's not enough to hear Axelrod say he didn't. Obama needs to do that NOW and not let the rumor hang over his head until the general election - if he gets that far. Asking voters to give money in order to squash the rumor is ludicrous.


The Clinton campaign = dirty politics. Americans have had enough dishonesty from Rove, Rumsfield, Bush. This campaign will self destruct before the January 3rd caucus.


You guys really think there's a difference between Reps and Dems? They both want the same things: Bigger gov to give you free things and police you. Oh don't think the Reps are above handouts too(Bushy's $400-a-kid check, when he bought the presidency). And the next Clinton will be more than happy to have another new agency to make sure I'm brushing my teeth the correct way -or I'll pay a fine, as my bad brushing techniques lead to increases in fed. gov. subsidized dental care spending. Don't even get me started on the new tongue scraping agency -and yes, I do... They're both in favor of the war, as it allows them to increase their power, in the name of 'safety'. Reps and their military contractor buddies will be happy to keep the war going ad infinitum. Dems (Hilldog/Baraka -from Mortal Kombat, of course!) and their newfound military contractor lovers won't commit to ending the war before 2013 -if ever. They're all spineless and Hillary will be more than happy to take up Bushy's rhetoric, when she gets into office, of 'Terrorism, Terrorism, Terrorism' with a lil' dash of '9/11' somewhere in there... All the while, since most Americans don't care or don't even know, our dollar will become so devalued that when it does hit the fan and other countries quit financing our war and free whatevers, she'll be right up there trumpeting an idea for a 'new, stronger, unified' currency. And the people will CHEER!!! They'll be so happy that they'll sign away whatever liberties they have left, just so long as they can keep their flat screen tv's... Illegal immigrants? They both want them. Dems want 10 million more poor people that they can promise things to, so they can have 10M more votes. Reps want 10 million cheap laborers to hand over to the corporatists, so they can continue to undercut their own citizens. Ironically, the idiots that vote for the neocons are the same ones getting the screw -ah, the humor. Amazing how a country that 'takes security so seriously' leaves its doors wide open, eh/si? They don't care about terrorists. They just want to pass more HR1955's -ps. shame on you Dems for letting one of your own author it. That one reads straight out of the neocon war manual.

Weinerdog, there's nothing wrong with smoking a little herb. At least, nothing morally. Yeah, it messes your brain up a little. But so does pumping gas, at gas station, and breathing the vapors. But correction on the part about it being nobody's business. It's your fed. gov.'s business, as they think it's bad for you. Unfortunately today’s politicians have lost site of its citizens and have aligned themselves along that of big money. Just follow the money trail and that of special interests groups. The political candidates need to step back and look what out founding fathers wrote

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America .”

Establish Justice – Letting individuals with money, influence, illegals, and stardom avoiding the same justice as the rest of us (equal treatment under the law)

Insure Domestic Tranquility – We are becoming more of a police state everyday yet violence and crime is rising. While we need to administer justice we as a people need to understand the root causes. Drugs, poverty, and mental illness are some of the root causes that need to be investigated and programs elaborated on.

Provide for the common Defense – I think the government has base coved several times over so much so that waste and corruption are the norm.

Promote the general Welfare – We ranked 37th in 2000 and last in May or 2007 against 5 other nations. In infant mortality we ranked last against 23 other nations an 15th out of 19 for life expectancy at the age of 60. I wounded if the government would invest in the health of its citizens as it does for the military we all would be better off for it.

Our Posterity – Lastly it seems with all the rushing to establish free trade acts there has been no effort to provide checks and balances. Jobs are getting out sourced to overseas countries. But how does one compete with a labor force who is forced to work 18 hour days, pays their help little to nothing, puts them up in government housing, provides government health care, and has no checks and balances for environmental and safety. On the US end received products full of lead, toothpaste tainted with anti-freeze, and glue balls with hallucinogenic drugs. Then what about all the dislocated / unemployed American workers who wages are dropping because the higher paying jobs are leaving the country? That along with the H1B’s and L1A’s coming in on work vistas to take the already scarce technical jobs away from Americans already living here. Again follow the money trail who did the government bail out not the person who is struggling to have a job and pay bills but to the financial intuitions who provide big kick backs.

I lived long enough to know that politicians make promises that they don’t intent to keep. Instead of talking about issues and how to solve them they usually wind up poking fun or things that gets the media off track of the real issues. It is too bad we can’t indict politicians who don’t follow through with their promises.


what someone did as an young adult and running for president or any office have to do with the other? the most important question should be in the last 2 decades what standard and moral have you broken? your youth is your youth adulthood is here and now some of you still might committ adultery or fornication and that is wrong, but you are talking about that! there is no clean politican, no where they all have skeltons in their closet, deal with the matter at hand trying to achieve justice


With the economy downgrading like a waterflow,war in Iraq, school system, unemployment, public safety, and other important issues vital to our american dreams, we need to hear from all presidential candidates what they could do for us rather than embracing celebrities to do it for them. What a joke.


OY! It would help if y'all could SPELL for God's sake. It would be helpful if bloggers could actually express a cogent thought in ENGLISH. Credibility MIGHT be a smidgen higher if the pundits in the posts knew the difference between site and sight. To and two and too, anyone?Charity, humility and plain old commonsense are obviously in very short supply in the USA in 2007, and I am increasingly disgusted by the level to which we have collectively sunk. What is this anyway? Obama smoked a joint--oooohhhh, I'm telling! Next he's a dope dealer? AARRUGGGHHH! Grow up, already! I think we ALL have more important things to worry about. This is the typical Clinton dirty tricks. They always do low life attacks and try to talk on the other side of their mouth when caught.

And Hillary has no experience and is not qualified for this job.
