DES MOINES -- The dispute over who is purer on the influence of money from special interests continues its back and forth between former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

This morning, Obama's campaign issued one of those easy-to-generate letters from disgruntled former supporters of Edwards in Iowa, while the afternoon brought one from the Edwards campaign written under the names of former Obama supporters now backing Edwards.

Confusing? And we haven't even mentioned the number 527 yet.

The Edwards letter suggests that Obama took $1.5 million from "PACs and Washington lobbyists" before he started his presidential bid, a source of funds he has sworn off in his current electoral effort.

The letter also makes a less sincere charge that Obama is "attacking other campaigns about '527' organizations even though a '527' organization called Vote Hope is supporting his candidacy."

The debate about the involvement of outside advocacy groups in Iowa campaigning broke out last weekend, when Obama sharply criticized Edwards for benefiting from a group called Alliance for a New America, a so-called 527 group (an IRS term, not a journalistic one) run by Edwards' 2004 campaign manager.

The group, now running nearly $800,000 in television ads statewide in Iowa, has been running radio ads for several weeks about health care, farmers, trade and the fight for rural America that appear to be favorable to Edwards.

But the mention of the group Vote Hope is a bit of a different story. Obama's campaign says the California-based group has spent less than $40,000 and none of it has been in the early voting states like Iowa.

Asked about the group in June, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the senator "thinks that candidates should be accountable for the campaigns they run, the donations they receive and the money they spend" and that the campaign wanted supporters to financially contribute "directly through his campaign.”

The text of the Edwards letter is below the jump.

December 28, 2007

Dear Friends:

Earlier in the campaign, we supported Senator Barack Obama because he said he was the candidate of change.

We were disappointed to learn that Senator Obama took $1.5 million from PACs and Washington lobbyists – and only stopped taking their money days before entering the presidential race. Now, he is attacking other campaigns about “527” organizations even though a “527” organization called Vote Hope is supporting his candidacy.

We believe that you can’t achieve real change simply by politely asking for it and then hoping the special interests will agree to voluntarily give up their power and profits. From civil rights to the environmental movement to Social Security and Medicare, big and meaningful change has always required a President willing to stand up and fight for it. Universal health care, stopping global warming, raising the minimum wage, and building a stronger middle class will take more than just rhetoric and hope – we need a president with the backbone to fight for it and a track record of taking on special interests and beating them.

John Edwards is the only candidate in the race who has never taken a dime from PACs or Washington lobbyists. He walked the walk not only by rejecting PAC and Washington lobbyist money from day one, but by taking them on and beating them – including helping lead the fight to pass a Patients’ Bill of Rights in the Senate over the objection of insurance companies, HMOs, and their Washington lobbyists.

We are proud to be supporting John Edwards, a leader with the strength, integrity, and backbone to fight for the real change Iowan and American families deserve. Please join us in caucusing for John Edwards on January 3rd.

What is Edwards record on lobbyist reform? How many campaign finance reform bills did Edwards pass during his term in the Senate? Thanks Happy New Year...

What Obama's campaign did with their letter using former supporters to attack Edwards was outrageous. It was a poor decision by the Edwards camp to stoop to Obama's level. At the very least America gets to see that Obama's politics of hope is about as genuine as Bush's promotion of "compassionate conservatism."

I don't like the letter from Obama's campaign and I don't like the one from Edwards (although at least the Edwards letter was done to defend against an attack).

This is a lot to do about nothing. Is this all the Edwards campaign has? Maybe he should just go get his $400 haircut and go back to his 28,000 square foot house in NC. Why didn't he stop all of the jobs from leaving his state when he was in the Senate? Why isn't he even leading in the polls in his own state. He's a fraud.

Please, let's open our eyes to the reality of John Edwards. He has made millions upon millions of dollars from the "greed" of the very same corporations he now condemns, through his hedge fund management. He lives one of the most posh lives of any candidate, from his multi-million dollar home to his haircuts. He blindly supported this awful Iraq war when he could have opposed it. Now that he is running for president that is all bad? Are we so used to being manipulated and lied to by the Republicans, that we Democrats now can't even see when one of our own is doing it to us. He uses his soft-spoken southern voice, heavy with emotionally laden language to lull us into believing his closing arguments in this campaign.
I beg you Democrats, please let's not be fooled again.
We need to unite behind a candidate who has not shifted, maneuvered or squirmed out of crucial positions over the years, and who does not have to convince us that NOW what he believes is really what he believes, that NOW his positions have changed for real, not because they will get him votes.
The only electable candidate who personifies the real shift we are looking for from this type of politics is Barack Obama. No explanations needed, just, as his campaign says, change we can believe in .

Well check out the Center for Public Integrity, 527 committees, SEIU: more than $64.5 MILLION in contributions. From whom? The maintenance and hotel workers, the home healthcare workers who don't even get paid vacation time? What the heck is going on? There were almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS contributed to 527s in 06!

Get a grip people - our government's been sold unless you caucus and elect Barack. Combined with his promise to have a bipartisan cabinet, he'll be able to grant more access to regular people than any other. That's why a senior woman I know here, Republican since Reagan is now a precinct captain and Democrat for Obama here in California.

Let's save ourselves, unless you've got a cool billion dollars set aside somewhere for "equal" influence. Want to end this vulture-fest? Make all their candidates lose, vote for the only one with a record-breaking almost half million donors - in the primaries, no less - and send these people who live large from fundraising and bribing our leaders back home, disgraced! Edwards, whose former campaign adviser RUNS the SEIU 527 now, the "voice of the people", puh-lease!

Silly season has arrived and is going strong. I have signed up a number of 2004 JE supporters. They are not "defectors", they just recognize that while JE is a good candidate, Barack is a great one!

Hillary, on the other hand, is best qualified to be Sec'y of Education. This is not degatory, it's just an observation. An Obama administration will need a really good Sec'y of Ed.

Barack Obama is just head and shoulders above all of the other Dems running this cycle. Any other time, Joe Biden or Chris Dodd might be running a LOT stronger, but Barack's time is now.

Yet when we have such a good candidate in Barack, why do we need to spend any time beating each other up? Just study Barack -- his character and competence, look at what he's already done in 3 short years in the Senate. Study him on the issues, policies and positions, then compare his oratory skills against JE, HRC, JB, CD, BR -- being a great orator commands respect and he is second to none, on either side.

On Jan 4th, children all over the world will begin to hang Barack's photo over their bed. On Feb 6th, adults will begin to put is photo above their desks at the office, or in the locker rooms at the plant; we'll begin to read his policy statements more thoroughly. And on November 4th, we'll send a single to the world that America is back, to once again become a leader in the free world, wanting to be at peace with all the world.

America, our moment is now. On Jan 3rd, we in Iowa are going to Stand for Change and we are going to send Barack Obama out of Iowa with a BIG WIN!!!

Ultimately we will have to WIN a GENERAL election next November: Polls consistently show that OBAMA is the person who runs best in those general election head-to-head contests! BARACK OBAMA is the candidate who can UNIFY this country and deliver us from the Clinton-Bush dynasty legacy.... and the continuation of the endless, partisan bickering and fighting -- where nothing gets ACCOMPLISHED. Senator Obama will bring us GENUINE change -- not just phony campaign slogans that are the usual poll-driven pandering. Voters in both Iowa and in NH have the enormous advantage of being able to see and hear the candidates first-hand; our gut instincts tell us that Obama is the candidate that we can TRUST.....the candidate who will UNIFY us.... who will INSPIRE the country and the international community..... ..and who will defeat the GOP next November!! Thanks to the wise voters of Iowa and New Hampshire -- Marian.

John McCain tried to kill himself in POW camp
December 23, 2007 -- McCain says because he survived 5½ years of brutal torture, while a prisoner of the communist Vietnamese, he is better qualified to be president of the United States than any other candidate. McCain claims his POW sufferings included three years in solitary confinement where he was tortured so badly that he "broke," causing him to attempt suicide. .

kisha--edwards supported the patients' bill of rights when he was in congress...you can ask obama's campaign advisor, axlerod, about that, he used to work for edwards...

bob--he's not made millions and millions off the hedge fund, stop spreading lies. he's since divulged his interests with them.

i'm so sorry obama, unions like the seiu, were these groups just special interests to you? then why, oh why, do you woo them soooo much this past year?? it's just sour grapes, and it's so sad for you.

you know obama, you are an attorney, yes? you did go to harvard law, right? you know it's the law that edwards cannot talk to these groups, and they cannot talk to him. i hope you are not talking to this 527 group you've got pushing you in california--that would be illegal.

edwards has always been my candidate, for many issues, not least of all his work on poverty. it's a shame obama is self-imploding with these attacks--i was hoping he would be good for a vp or a future run for president. please obama, stop saying stupid things. i used to defend you. no longer.

edwards is the definition of leadership. if anyone is interested at all, please check out his website and simply judge for yourself, johnedwards.com. check out the issues pages. go. now.

btw, the number of 'volunteer' commenters for these other candidates has increased of late. i especially like how so many of them try to sound like they are republicans hating edwards, when they are in fact obama and probably other candidate's supporters dissing edwards. did the obama campaign put out a new memo for you guys with a new 'script' to use?

I campaigned for Edwards for the last election when he talked tough and emotionally about how he was going to stop hedge fund companies with two kinds of Americas rhetoric. I was appalled when he left the Senate to go to work as a consultant for Fortress, a company known for hedge funds.

It has been widely reported that Edward's campaign manager recently left the campaign to form an organization to raise funds from special interest groups to run attack ads against Obama. This is a replay of what another campaign manager did in 2004 to get around the law and raise money from special interest groups. Why would anyone think it was wrong for Obama to defend himself and identify the truth to the American voters? Edwards talks tough about how he doesn't take money from special interests. Its about time Edwards was exposed! Now its being reported that Obama is the attacker? Obama has been put on the defense continuously, of course he will defend!

And who should be held accountable for the Iraq war, No Child Left Behind and the Patriot Act if not Edwards and other candidates who voted for it?

Edwards is a lawyer and "fights" only for money in my opinion. I support Barack Obama 100%.

Edward has used his education to fights companies for personal benefits (e.g. to get $400 for his hair cut).

While Obama with Havard Law he never went for self enrichment, he opted for public service. For workers who lost their jobs in Il, for vorters who eventually elected Bill Clinton, for housing of the poor.

He inteligently crafted policies that took special interest groups out of our politics in Il, fought for overhaul in the way death penalt was carried out, opposed for the war when it was not popular.

What did Edward do to this coutry apart from enriching himself through victims???

Everyone knows, as Obama has stated and publicized that he took PAC money when running for senate and that he'd grown and said he would not take it for his presidential bid, and that's what he's stuck to.

Wow strong words, though maybe he should tone down even though he does not collect money from any special interest groups.

Can a Presidential Candidate win an Election with a Radical Anti-Corporate pitch?

Why does Hussein Obama REFUSE to salute the American flag? Rest assured, the morally bankrupt Republican Party will use that against him if he is the Democratic nominee for President. The Republicans (and their allies in the mass media) would love to run against either Obama or Billary (sic) Clinton, because they know they can beat BOTH Obama and Clinton in the general election, but would have NO chance whatsoever against John Edwards. If the Democrats are stupid enough to nominate EITHER Obama or Clinton, they deserve to lose!
