Kitty Dukakis has been getting tons of emails from Barack Obama's campaign asking for her money, but they never seem to want her time.
And that has Mike Dukakis, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential nominee, drawing some negative conclusions about the Obama campaign strategy as a whole. He says he's "baffled" by it.
According to the Boston Globe, Dukakis thinks Obama has not made the most of the crowds that come to hear him speak, nor of the contributors who respond to him on the Internet. At least he hasn't made the most of one of them.
As evidence, Dukakis points to the fact that his wife has never been asked to run a precinct for the campaign, even though she is a contributor and supporter and gets many on-line communiques from Obama.
Aides to the Illinois senator brag about their grassroots organization, especially in the early-voting states. Kitty Dukakis may not be working for them on the ground, but they say thousands of other people are.
One of those people contended with Dukakis' analysis, which came as he spoke at a college campus this week. Lot of people signed up to help Obama at a recent Boston rally, a student in the audience told Dukakis, and supporters from the state are traveling to New Hampshire to work for the Illinois Democrat.
Says the Globe:
Dukakis shook his head impatiently. The campaign has to be run from the neighborhood, he said, with New Hampshire people canvassing in New Hampshire and Massachusetts people canvassing their own blocks.
"This state is going to be important," he added, noting that Massachusetts has moved its primary up to Feb. 5. "They should be working here."

Good lord, I'm not sure I'd want Dukakis' help either.
Sounds like he is upset he isn't important enough anymore to warrant special coddling anymore.

Dukakis's wife should ask herself, not wait to be asked. If you want to get involved you can. Dukakis has a head way too big for is body. Obama's ears would look small on Dukakis's head.

I would encourage either Dukakis to get involved with the Barack Obama campaign. They can visit the campaign's Action Center for ideas and if they want to canvas in Massachusetts, by all means!

I don't think that Dukakis would quite fit into Obama's campaign slogan of leaving the past generation's political battles behind.

As a contributor, I get frequent emails from the Obama campaign that tell me exactly where to look to volunteer.
It was easy to sign up, and I did some volunteer phone banking (in this comment and any other comment I post, I speak only for myself of course).
So I don't know what he's talking about. Perhaps it's a disconnect about the Internet, since barackobama.com is the main resource for volunteering that I know of. But, if one is receiving email already, using Google should pose no additional barrier.
Again, nearly every communication I've ever seem from the campaign calls for volunteers as well as contributions.

When I contacted the campaign I was asked online if I would be able to volunteer. They did not contact me. Join one of the online "groups" that put together local activities, including precinct captain training. She can also put together an event herself online. Welcome aboard.

Perhaps executing a strategy that "baffles" Dukakis is a good thing. At least Obama has not allowed weekend holidays for murderers or engaged in a photo op driving a tank and looking like a 3 year old child playing soldier.
As a factual point, Obama routinely asks his supporters to volunteer, and has the largest ground operation of native Iowans and NH voters canvassing for him constantly. Mr. Dukakis could not be more wrong or misinformed if he tried.
