Sen. Fred Thompson apologized today for attacking Gov. Mike Huckabee – not!
In what has to be one of the first uses of the fake-out apology in this race, Thompson's staff released a sarcastic press release Thursday, that was full of a mea culpa that was nothing of the sort.
It begins:
"In light of Mike Huckabee's heartfelt apology to Mitt Romney for making reference to Romney's religion in the New York Times Magazine, we at the Thompson Campaign would like to offer Huckabee our own heartfelt apologies for some references we've made about his record as Governor of Arkansas.We apologize for pointing out that as Governor of Arkansas, Huckabee offered in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. That's something he'd probably just as soon no one talk about. "
It then goes on to mock apologize for mocking Huckabee's past support for lifting the Cuban embargo, tax increases for Arkansans and for " telling reporters that a BA in Biblical Studies from Ouachita Baptist University doesn't, in fact, make Huckabee more qualified to fight the war on terror than say...Fred Thompson."
The release comes a day after Thompson earned attention for his alert and sometimes aggressive answers at Wednesday's debate, hosted by The Des Moines Register. After months of being accused of sleepwalking through the campaign he entered late, Thompson is obviously awake, and he's making sure Iowa voters know it.
Alice Stewart, a Huckabee spokeswoman, did not return a call seeking comment.

Fred, if you want to get some traction with the Christio-fascist base, stick to real, primary color religious attacks, like Huckabee.

Hilarious; I think the whole Republic slate should make a group announcement that they 'withdraw from the '08 race immediately, but immediately announce for '12 race, which commences immeditately!'.

I think Fred's "fake-out" apology was the second of the day. The first was Hillary's when she pretended to Obama that she didn't orchestrate her staffer's attack on Bama's teen-aged drug use. Have to admit, she is very accomplished at it. But then, again, she's had so much experience with prevarications of a wide variety.

Irony, sarcasm, reverse psychology? I think Fred has showed us what is needed to beat Hilary in a general election. Huckabee's comments about Romny's Mormon faith were low class, and indicate he would fall pretty quickly to the Clinton news machine. If I was a democrat Huckabee would be my favorite republican, he less informed than Hillary and if he won you have a liberal republican in the White House. Huckabee would be a win win for democrats. Fred Thompson would use finesse against Hillary and win.

Fred Thompson gets it. he is easily the most conservative candidate in this election and easily the best leader. I didn't see anyone else stand up to the moderator when she was asking the "raise your hands" question.

Bill R's idea of finesse is the same as the Hildebeasts;
Order the FBI to hand over political opponents personal files or have her advisor fall on his own sword merely to keep her lead in the polls...that's just your cup of tea in your definition of "finesse", isn't it Bill...wherein you better believe that's the opposite of Fred's definition.
Thompson raised the bar merely by announcing his run, let alone, the way he has conducted himself and brought real solutions to serious problems right out of the gate. No one else even wants to talk about but, they sure copy his work quickly.
You had eight years of amateur hour, a healthy dose of unethical despotism followed by a compassionate republican who gave you a huge government, more wrongheaded socialist programs with wide open borders but, made you enjoy them with a healthy economy and kept your butt safe from terrorists your own rep's invited here.
Time to grow up and get a clue as we're not taking "no" as your answer anymore.
