DES MOINES -- The day after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Republican Mike Huckabee said Friday that the killing “changes the world” by adding a new level or turmoil to the Middle East and raises concerns about terrorist attacks on America.

“The assassination of Bhutto I think creates not only new heightened tensions there but it reminds us just how delicate that situation is,” the former Arkansas governor said during an interview Friday morning on KCCI-TV. “If you think about Pakistan, that’s where if we have another terrorist attack, it’s going to be postmarked: Pakistan. That’s where Osama bin Laden is most likely hiding.”

He also said the United States is a difficult position with Pakistan, a problem only underlined by the assassination.

“The problem is you’ve got the area where we think the terrorists are hiding. It’s an area where (President Pervez) Musharraf says he really doesn’t have control of it because the tribal leaders do and yet as a government we have virtually said we’re going to let Musharraf go looking for him,” Huckabee said. “So Musharraf is in the perfect position to say, ‘I can’t find him because I can’t get in.’ But on the other hand we’re holding him responsible. It puts the United States in a very tough spot.”

Huckabee has been criticized for his lack of experience on foreign issues, most notably earlier this month acknowledging he didn’t know anything about a government intelligence report that had been released about Iran’s nuclear program.

But he still tried to draw a connection between his leadership as a governor and what he’d be asked to do if he was president if faced with a similar international emergency.

“Having been a governor, everyday you face interruptions and the unexpected whether it’s a tornado, a school shooting, it can be an airplane crash, something’s going to happen to interrupt your day and that’s what you get paid for,” he said. “It’s not the expected, but the unexpected.”

With the Iowa caucuses less than a week away, Huckabee said he has to come in the top three in order to continue campaigning but said he didn’t have to win to continue being a viable candidate.

“Winning surges us ahead like a rocket but we’ve said all along we need to come in one of the top three places,” he said. “There are three tickets out of Iowa: first class, business and coach. If you don’t get one of those you’re probably going home freight.”

What duck bind or Jack Daniels bottle did Huck a Buck just climb out of? Is he some reincarnation of Rip Van Winkle. Seems so.

Thanks, Master of the Obvious. You've certainly be learning much from the current Moron.

Don't worry Mike, it won't be long before you're back in obscurity and can once again gain solace from a big bowl of pork rinds.

Huckabee would be ok as a president.

At least he would not continue the practice of a rich nation robbing pooer ones: which is the cause of terrorism.

If the USA would stop exploiting and killing other nations' peoples, then we would not have the problems we have.

Huckabee likes to work with people. This kind of humility would work well in the world.

Ho Huck!

Romney is a flip flopping flake, I just found out that he has stock in all of the companies that are major promoters of homosexual rights & abortions, he is not going to do anything to these companies or the procedures but try to implement things that would advance them another example of how eloquent speaking politicians are embedded within Wall Street! HE IS ANOTHER WALL STREET CANDIDATE!all this rhetoric is follishnes and an intent denial to dismiss truth. The Demo-wacks have had control over congress for 2 years now and have done NOTHING but fund pork barrel projects and have not come close to making any kind of real progress that the promised their poor demo-wack supporters. There credibility is SHOT! and as for Huckabee... People fear that he will win, which he is... At this point I will vote for anybody other than a Demowack. i am so frustrated that I have changed party position and will vote Repub this year.I am so proud of Huckabee i do not know what to do. He is a man of principle and he surely just sealed the deal with my vote. He will win and big he will, and while the pundits try to demise him, or his other political rivals try to make him look bad. They may want to look at the mirror at themselves. You got flip flopping mitt, dead fred, pimped out guiliani , small brain mccain, and “paul is crazy and deranged”! And as for the Dems: you got Hell-ary that have sold her soul to the left party lobbyist in america, and you got chronic smoking Obama? which neither one has ANY experience in foreign policy. If it was not for Hell-ary having bill clinton last name, she would not even be known.Huckabee is the sure winner and will win big. I can not wait for romney to get out of the race. i bet he will go back to hiring illegals to work in his yard. check more out about him at www.massresistance.org he is the biggest flake since kellogs!

Hucksterbee would trust his god to keep us safe. Think about it. He could shut down the Pentagon, fire all the bureaucrats and soldiers and sell off the inventory on e-bay. And then he'd pray to keep us safe. After all, religion is the most important thing as far as he's concerned.

Huckabee's comments can be interpreted to mean: BE AFRAID! The terrorists are lurking behind every corner and we must take any step to eliminate them, invade nations that pose no threat to us, eliminate our civil liberties, and do it in the name of GOD.

Why not just let Bush have a third term, why start worrying about the Constitution now?

"HUCKABEE SPEAKS"

ISOLATE THOSE MUSLIMS, I MEAN. OH THAT WAS LAST WEEKS SPEECH.

HERE IS MAN WHO STANDS FOR WOMEN VOTER SUPPRESSION, THE EVANGELICAL SURPRISE SURPRISE AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH ELECTION CYCLE.

THEN FOR HIM TO STAND ON HIS PULPIT AND CLAIM, SHE CHANGED THE WORLD. NO EVERY WOMAN HAS CHANGED THE WORLD, EVEN YOUR MOM, WHEN SHE BROUGHT YOU IN THIS WORLD.

THAT IS WHAT SHE STOOD FOR, AND HUCKABEE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WOMEN IN AMERICA. LIKE HE SAYS HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN BEAT HILLARY. THE DEMS SAY THEY CAN BEAT HILLARY.

TWO AGAINST ONE IS A BULLY FIGHT AND BEING THE REAL MAN I AM. MY VOTE GOES TO HILLARY. FIGHT OVER.

That is reassuring. Yuckabee thinks he knows where OBL is hiding. And he seems to know that Musharraf does have control of part of his country.

Yuckabee might be the only candidate who watches the news while eating his morning low-fat grits or reads Time magazine while in the outhouse.

I am impressed by his comments. Definitely presidential if you asked me.

Huckabee stands in stark contrast to the talking heads that think we can sprinkle democracy all over the place and defeat terrorists. Get real. In Pakistan, elections are followed by military coops. Bhutto our hope funded the Taliban as prime minister to ensure trade routes through Afganistan. They killed her anyway. If you dont join them you are next. That is their Koran directed mandate. They dont respond to nice talk, or donations from Pakistani prime ministers. They respond to its our way or the suicide high way. I think Huckabee understands this. Like it or not we are at war with these extremists. They respond to force. We ran the Taliban/AlQueda out of Afganistan, we will run them out of Iraq. Like wack a mole they popped up in Pakistan. They must be eradicated here as well. They will pop up again someplace else but we must be diligent.

Here is what Mike Huckabee states on his website about the assasination.

"Benazir Bhutto's assasination should also stand as a stark reminder for those who doubt the nature of our enemy.

I believe that we are currently engaged in a world war. Radical Islamic fascists have declared war on our country and our way of life. They have sworn to annihilate each of us who believe in a free society, all in the name of a perversion of religion and an impersonal god. We go to great extremes to save lives, they go to great extremes to take them. This war is not a conventional war, and these terrorists are not a conventional enemy. We must fight the war on terror with the intensity and single-mindedness that it deserves."

Oh and its a duck blind not bind.

"Huckabee has been criticized for his lack of experience on foreign issues, most notably earlier this month acknowledging he didn’t know anything about a government intelligence report that had been released about Iran’s nuclear program."

Huckabee think the Bhutto assassination "changes the world." A world by the way, that he still thinks is flat!!!

Mike Huckabee, unlike Dubya, anhd more like B. Clinton didn't get to be where they are because they're nitwits.

That said, Huckabee invokes his religion in a way that says this non-practising agnostic won't be allowed in the club.

Vote NO on theocracy.

There are so many stupid comments on this blog, I don't know how it stays alive. You idiots needs to climb back into your holes and stay there until this election is over.

Reality Check,

Legend in your own mind are yeh?

Either support your contensions or shut your pie hole.

Reality Check,

To whom do you refer? I see three of 4 positions on UpChuck in this string.

Anon,
I would like to C point out that we don't yet know who did the deed on Benazir.

At least Huckabe is the ONLY candidate that knows NOT to split the land of Israel, specifically the city of Jerusalem.

All the other lames will do just as Bush, conspire to work with the latest terrorist leader wearing a dish towel headed towards the destined to fail "PIECE for land farce." Israel could give her land and they will still bomb and kill people.

Also, personally, I'm getting sick of elitist snobs (mostly white) laughing at the people from the heartland and evangelicals.
The heartland is the backbone of America, they grow our vegetables and supply most of our food. And MOST of all provide MOST of the assistance to those in need and the forgotten. Example: Katrina.

So keep whining little men-girls, you're the same ones who will be crying the loudest when a natural disaster comes and no one else is there to help you.

RECOGNIZE.

The only true pedstal you sit on is in your bathroom.

hmmn. I listened to a Huckabee foreign policy speech a couple months ago that blew me away. This does not reconcile to the media bites Im reading today. Listen for yourself:

Welcome for a visit.

Foreign policy and Huckabee do not mix:

“We have seen what happens in the Musharraf government,” Mr. Huckabee said on MSNBC. “He has told us he does not have enough control of those eastern borders near Afghanistan to be able go after the terrorists. But on the other hand, did he not want us going in, so what do we do?” Those borders are actually on the west, not the east.

Huckabee offered an Orlando crowd his “apologies for what has happened in Pakistan.” His aides said later that he meant to say “sympathies.” He also said he was worried about martial law “continuing” in Pakistan, although Mr. Musharraf lifted the state of emergency on Dec. 15.

Finally:

Huckabee argued that a border fence would keep out Pakistanis who must be sneaking into the country in larger numbers than any of us realized.

Asked how a border fence would help keep out Pakistani immigrants, Mr. Huckabee argued that airplane security was already strong, but that security at the southern United States border was dangerously weak.

“When I say single them out I am making the observation that we have more Pakistani illegals coming across our border than all other nationalities except those immediately south of the border,” he told reporters in Pella. “And in light of what is happening in Pakistan it ought to give us pause as to why are so many illegals coming across these borders.”

In fact, far more illegal immigrants come from the Philippines, Korea, China and Vietnam, according to recent estimates from the Department of Homeland Security.

There's more.........

This man is presidential material? Some one had better wake up. Romney is doing the country a huge favor in exposing this guy for what he is before he gets elected to something important.

Mike Huckabee's comments on Bhutto's death were based on a quick assessment. He didn't have a team of experts to advise him since he is only a candidate. I think he shows an understanding of the situation and how one event involving Al Qaeda potentially can create a domino effect in other locations. His detractors will do the usual dissection and look for opportunities to criticize every nuance. Mike Huckabee has the ability to deal with whatever situation presents itself and he will do even better as President.

Gov Huckabee has been campaigning for 1 year strait. Lately he has been going night and day with little sleep. Hopping from state to state trying to get his message across. This man has governed a state, not as a Christian but in a secular way. There is no reason to think he will do differently as president. He governed so well Times magazine named him one of the 5 best governors in the country. Does he know the end and outs of the Pakistani situation today? No! He is focused on winning the presidency, not running the country. When his focus changes to running the country Huck will govern with the same calm, reliable grace he governed Arkansas. There is NO PRESIDENT that knows everything. That is why the government is set up with cabinet posts. People to give wise counsel. The House and Senate. I am proud of Mike Huckabee and am giving him my vote.

BHUTTO, BUSH, AND MUSHARRAF

With the assassination of Ms. Bhutto, we are given to understand, by many newspaper stories and broadcasts, that anti-democratic religious zealots killed Pakistan’s last hope for democracy.

Ms. Bhutto was in many ways an admirable and accomplished leader, a talented woman of courage, but her assassination was a far more complex event than simplistic claims about the dark work of anti-democratic forces.

President Musharraf, for most of the years since the American invasion of Afghanistan, was treated in public as an acceptable ally by the United States. The U.S. desperately needed Pakistan's help in its invasion of Afghanistan, a land about which American politicians had little understanding. To secure that help, America forgave Pakistan’s debts, removed its embargo-bad guy status (for developing atomic weapons in secret), provided large amounts of military assistance, and even managed to swallow its pride over the embarrassing work of Pakistan’s scientific hero, Dr. A. Q. Khan, who supplied atomic-weapons technology to other countries.

Once Americans had mired themselves in Afghanistan – after all the hoopla over a “victory” which amounted to little more than massive bombing while the Northern Alliance warlords did most of the fighting against their rival, the Taleban - the extent of the mess into which they had put themselves slowly dawned. This is particularly true regarding the almost non-existent border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a huge area that forms almost a de facto third country of Pashtuns.

Intense pressure started being applied to Musharraf to allow American special forces to conduct the kind of brutal and socially-disruptive operations they have maintained in the mountains of Afghanistan. The American approach to rooting out the dispersed Taleban, following its initial “victory,” amounted to going from village to village in the mountains, crashing down doors, using stun grenades, holding men at gunpoint in their own homes, separating the village's women from the men's protection, plus many other unforgivable insults in such a tradition-bound land.

All of this has really been getting them nowhere. In effect, the American government demonstrated it had no idea what to do in Afghanistan after it invaded, only knowing it wanted to get the "bad guys."

Recently, Musharraf's position vis-à-vis the U.S. has undergone a dramatic change. Overnight, the State Department changed him from valiant ally to enemy of democracy, and the American press obliged with the appropriate stories and emphasis.

The reason for this change was simply Musharraf’s refusal to cooperate enough with Bush's secret demands to extend America’s special-forces operations into Pakistan's side of the Pashtun territory: that is, to allow a foreign country into his country to terrorize and insult huge parts of its population. In Bush’s worldview, this only amounted to Pakistan’s fully embracing the “war on terror,” but for many Pakistanis, the “war on terror” is only one more aspect of American interference in their part of the world. The Taleban is viewed by millions there as heroic resisters, standing up to American arrogance, a view not without some substance.

In trying to accommodate Bush, Musharraf launched various showy operations by Pakistan’s army, but his efforts were viewed in Washington as weak. The U.S. kept pushing the limits, trying to force Pakistan to internalize the “war on terror,” and Musharraf resisted. There was a horrific incident in which the U.S. bombed a madrassah (a religious school) in rural Pakistan, succeeding only in killing eighty children, falsely claiming it was Pakistan’s work against a terrorist center.

Musharraf has, rather bravely, opposed America’s demands for a de facto American invasion of his country. He has been remarkably outspoken about American policies on several occasions, not something calculated to endear him to Bush’s gang. So, suddenly he became an undemocratic pariah who needed to be replaced. It was easy enough to exploit public dissatisfaction with a military dictator, even if he was only trying to do his best for his country within some terrible limits.

America gave Ms. Bhutto a blessing and a gentle push, likely a bundle of cash, and undoubtedly the promise of lots of future support, to return home as opposition to Musharraf. One could fairly say that her assassination just proves how little Washington policymakers understand the region. It sent her to her death, desperately hoping against hope to get what it wanted.

Ms. Bhutto was regarded in Washington as more amenable to American demands in Pakistan. She had the double merit of being able to give Pakistan’s government the gloss of democracy while serving key American interests. But it couldn’t be clearer that democracy is not what the U.S. was really concerned with, because Musharraf was just a fine ally so long as he did as he was told.

The truth is that Musharraf has, in opposing America's demands, been a rather brave representative of Pakistan's interests, a patriot in American parlance.

True democracy for a place like Pakistan is a long way off, not because of this or that leader or party, but because of the country's backward economic state. This is even truer for Afghanistan. You cannot instantly create democracies out of lands living in centuries-old economies, burdened with centuries-old customs. The best thing America could have done for this region would have been generous economic assistance, but the U.S. has demonstrated, again and again, it has little genuine interest in that sort of thing. The customs and backwardness of centuries only melt away under the tide of economic development. Democracy follows almost automatically eventually.

The quick fix is what the U.S. demands, a quick fix to its own perceptions of problems under the guise of supporting democracy and opposition to terror, will achieve absolutely nothing over the long term.

Pastor Huckabee has the foreign policy experience to clean up the mess in Pakistan with one swipe of his arm. For example, Pastor Huckabee punctuated a point about hiring John Bolton as his foreign policy advisor yesterday by discharging his shotgun over the reporters' heads. In the ensuing ruckus, he didn't have time to mention that he is also advised by Kofi Annan, Henry Kissinger, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The other thing that has not been mentioned is an explanation of Pastor Huckabee's comment about Pakistanis entering the US illegally. What Pastor Huckabee probably meant was that rather than coming in from Mexico, the Pakistanis could be smuggled in by cargo containers originating from the so-called geographically shared eastern border with Afghanistan. This would make sense because, as Pastor Huckabee mentioned, martial law is being enforced in Pakistan, so that everyone else must remain inside their homes which would allow terrorism suspects to slip into the containers unnoticed for journey to the US. Pastor Huckabee apologized for the Pakistani affair because he is a true Christian and that is what Christians do. And because he has a theology degree and he mentioned that most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were clergymen, it carries extra weight with Christians, so he was able to raise $89,000 in the one day 'money bomb' on December 27.

So keep whining little men-girls, you're the same ones who will be crying the loudest when a natural disaster comes and no one else is there to help you.
