The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

AMES, Iowa—Republican Mike Huckabee challenged Iowans to back him over rival Mitt Romney to show that money can't buy support and to help save the state's first-in-the-nation caucuses in the future.

Speaking to more than 300 people at a hotel conference room, Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, also used his appearance to counter a spate of Romney attacks through TV commercials and direct mail pieces to Iowans.

"Maybe I should be worried, but I have a lot more confidence in you than I do in people's negative attack ads, in part because I think most of you have sense enough to understand that if a person doesn't have his own platform and all he can do is attack somebody else, he's probably not the guy you want running the country," Huckabee said.

The back and forth between Huckabee and Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, reflected a race of increasing intensity only two weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

Washington Post-ABC poll released Wednesday showed Huckabee with 35 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers, compared to Romney with 27 percent. Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who is making a renewed push in Iowa, was in third with 9 percent. Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas each had 8 percent support, while Sen. John McCain of Arizona had 6 percent.

Returning to the community where he finished a surprising second to Romney in August in the state GOP's non-binding Iowa Straw Poll, Huckabee defended his decisions to award clemencies and pardons, which the former Massachusetts governor did not do.

"He says it's about judgment," Huckabee said of Romney, accusing his rival of making decisions on pardons and clemency requests "based on how it's going to affect your own political future" rather than helping an individual.

Noting that he is being heavily outspent by Romney, Huckabee said he expected that "sometime between now and the caucuses, I'll probably be accused of kidnapping the Lindberg baby and being accused in the assassination of JFK."

But Huckabee said Iowans can prove that even though someone might have plenty of campaign cash, "You also can't buy the people of Iowa." If he wins the state, Huckabee said, "There won't ever be any doubt again about whether or not the Iowa caucuses matter, or whether Iowa matters and whether future presidential candidates had better come and put their roots deep in the ground in Iowa."

Oooohhh, so UpChuckAbee is running against 'big money'??

Pardon me while I upchuck.

Posers, dissemblers, swells, dandies, flip floppers, and nare-do-wells seem to be all the Republics have to offer this holiday season.

Bet Huck doesn't tell Iowans about his "path to citizenhip" a few days or week....sounds like open borders to me. Check his new amnesty immigration plan on his site

The Huckster doesn't want to buy your vote, he want's to beat you over the head with his bible until you vote for him.

Wow, the Republic Party Presidential candidates are terrible, I can't decide on which one is the worst or which one I like making fun of the most, hmmmm...

Yeah, it's a toss up, they're all bad.

Take a GOOD look at Huckabee and the FairTax - why is the FairTax studies only evaluate incomes up to $200,000? Because the effective tax rate for billionaires under the FairTax is less than 1%. You can buy things of great value all day long without ever buying a new one. Think mansions, land, yachts, valuable coins, stamps, bullion, stocks and bonds - all of which increase his wealth and none of which is taxed. The things that are NEW that the super rich require will be provided them as perquisites by the businesses they control. Think company car, company house, company jet - all of which use our infrastructure and none of which is paid for by the entity using them. Why should Walmart pay for roads and bridges when they can get you to pay for free?
This is another attempt by the liberal media to help hand the nomination to ANYONE but Dr. Ron Paul. Much as we'd like politics to be positive, it is in fact ruled almost entirely by negatives. For instance, what's the biggest negative the Republican Party is facing in 2008? Iraq - a staggering 70% of people favor IMMEDIATE withdrawl from Iraq. Who is the only candidate that doesn't have that negative? Dr. Paul, who advocates using those trillions of dollars to secure our border (perhaps against Saudis who were 20 of the 24 terrorists in 9/11) and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which is far more worrying than the loss of Social Security. Hm, full employment, withdrawl from Iraq and a huge boost to our economy from rebuilding our infrastructure - what Democrat wants to run against that. Hence the behavior of known liberal biased network CNN, who wants us to nominate either Guiliani or Romney - both of whose negatives are so high the copy practically writes itself!

I think that when the dust settles on Iowa, the GOP even in the evangelically influenced Iowa is too smart to commit "Huckacide. Check out the attached article and you decide if, when you check your gut, whether Huckabee is the GOP hopeful.

Romney should not be condemned for being successful in every business venture he has led and from that success drawing money to then serve the public good.

He never took a salary as Governor, He donated back the salary for saving the 2002 Olympics and bringing them over 100 million in the black. Now, what he spends from his own pocket to show his commitment to this nation is painted as elitism? He puts HIS money where his mouth is and does not rely on pastors campaigning in churches across Iowa. (separation of church and state....indeed!)

Mitt Romney speaks with intelligence and forethought when he chooses to highlight the differences in political record between he and Huck. He is articulate, specific, and direct, just the way I would like a President to communicate about important issues.

Huck's accusations, on the other hand, sound more like a defensive little playground boy who speaks off the cuff and from emotion. Such communication skills, while entertaining, will not withstand the rigors of diplomacy with other countries.

Mitt has a strong, solid, and winning platform. He knows how to communicate, and will appeal to the more thoughtful and intelligent members of his party.

Romney is always on both sides of every issue...he'll say or do ANYTHING to win. His nasty campaign proves he doesn't have anything to offer the country except negativity. Huckabee is a great communicator (like Reagan) and he has my vote.

No but, Mike Huckabee can be bought...

Take a poll and review others about the Huckabee campaign at:

http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=1337

In an article on realclearpolitics.com by Rich Lowery, he wrote,

"The ghost of Howard Dean haunts the pundit class. As soon as a candidate of either party spikes up in the polls, he is compared with Dean, who had a spectacular boomlet in the second half of 2003 only to deflate as soon as people began to vote in early 2004.

After many false prophecies, Dean circa 2008 has finally arrived. He is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Not because he will inevitably blow himself up in Iowa. But because, like Dean, his nomination would represent an act of suicide by his party.

Like Dean, Huckabee is an under-vetted former governor who is manifestly unprepared to be president of the United States. Like Dean, he is rising toward the top of polls in a crowded field based on his appeal to a particular niche of his party. As with Dean, his vulnerabilities in a general election are so screamingly obvious that it's hard to believe that primary voters, once they focus seriously on their choice, will nominate him."

Mike Huckabee is a great man wanting to help out the american people. If you want just another stupid politician running your country vote for Romney or who ever else you would like. If they win i DON'T want to hear YOU compalin.

Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14

Pardon the biblical reference, but it really is like David & Goliath. Romney has his millions, plus the backing of the Republican establishment. Huckabee is campaigning relying on his own merits, his experience as Governor for more than 10 years, and he doesn't have the money to use TV ads to counter Romney's unrelenting attacks. The shameful thing about Romney is that he's using implication and innuendo like a back-fence gossip. Take a look at mikehuckabee.com if you want to hear the other side of the story.

Huck, you can't buy my vote with a well timed "Christmas" message in the midst of an election. Better for you to have spent the money donating to the orphans of the killed US military, or to their widows and widowers. 4000 killed as a result of the Pugs.

BTW Huck, why do you want to change the constitution to outlaw Roe v Wade nationally? If my young daughter was raped-- you would prefer to traumatize her more, and force her to carry a rapist's child for nine months against her wishes? Moral presumption....... and so very clueless.

Mike Huckabee will win the Republican nomination and go on to be the next President of the US. He will be an excellent president.

Ugghh. Just saw the picture of Huckabee's family on Drudge Report. What a bunch of obese, disgusting slobs. Can you imagine those hillbillies being the first family. Gag me. If that redneck Huckabee gets the nomination just because he claims he's been endorsed my God the Republican party is over. I hope my conservative party isn't that stupid.

Way to go Mr. Huckabee!! We support you all the way. Those who make accusations unfairly should re think their comments. Of the 55 men who formed our constitution, 52 were active members of their church. Our founding fathers formed this Nation under God. Why would anyone fault him for believing in God, we don't fault the candidates who do not stand up for God.

Mr. Huckabee you are right. Money can not buy us. We have already chose you to be our next President, and millions of dollars in negative campaign ads will never change that. See you in the White House! President Mike Huckabee!!!

Is Huck's FairTax actually fairer? To provide substantive answers, Prof.'s Kotlikoff and Rapson (10/06) have concluded,

"...the FairTax imposes much lower average taxes on working-age households than does the current system. The FairTax broadens the tax base from what is now primarily a system of labor income taxation to a system that taxes, albeit indirectly, both labor income and existing wealth. By including existing wealth in the effective tax base, much of which is owned by rich and middle-class elderly households, the FairTax is able to tax labor income at a lower effective rate and, thereby, lower the average lifetime tax rates facing working-age Americans.

"Consider, as an example, a single household age 30 earning $50,000. The household’s average tax rate under the current system is 21.1 percent. It’s 13.5 percent under the FairTax. Since the FairTax would preserve the purchasing power of Social Security benefits and also provide a tax rebate, older low-income workers who will live primarily or exclusively on Social Security would be better off. As an example, the average remaining lifetime tax rate for an age 60 married couple with $20,000 of earnings falls from its current value of 7.2 percent to -11.0 percent under the FairTax. As another example, compare the current 24.0 percent remaining lifetime average tax rate of a married age 45 couple with $100,000 in earnings to the 14.7 percent rate that arises under the FairTax."

Further, per Jokischa and Kotlikoff (2005) ...

"...once one moves to generations postdating the baby boomers there are positive welfare gains for all income groups in each cohort. Under a 23 percent FairTax policy, the poorest members of the generation born in 1990 enjoy a 13.5 percent welfare gain. Their middle-class and rich contemporaries experience 5 and 2 percent welfare gains, respectively. The welfare gains are largest for future generations. Take the cohort born in 2030. The poorest members of this cohort enjoy a huge 26 percent improvement in their well-being. For middle class members of this birth group, there's a 12 percent welfare gain. And for the richest members of the group, the gain is 5 percent."

The current income-based tax system is also more expensive to run, because of the manner in which the tax code is gamed by politicians and lobbyists. Politicians realize great power, and attract constituencies for support, by granting tax favors (i.e., credits, deductions, exemptions) through lobbyists. Fully, fifty-three percent of Washington lobbyists are there because of the tax code! The tax code is continually changing, making it more complex - more difficult to understand. And, the salaries and costs of tax lawyers and lobbyists end up in higher prices of the products and services we buy. Additionally, the time and money required to keep records, file returns, report for audits, retain accounting and legal help, pay IRS penalties and interest, is time and money lost for other productive, or recreational, activities. Depriving us of the use of withheld wages increases our expenses through zero-interest withholding, inflation, return preparation time, and interest paid on credit cards and loans that otherwise may not have been necessary. Summed up, the cost of tax compliance, nationally, has been estimated to range anywhere from $265 billion to twice that amount, depending on the extent to which tax-avoidance consultation is sought and utilized. These expenses constitute a substantial hidden tax which is incomprehensible to the average working American. And the FairTax gets rid of all of it for most Americans, and most of it for business owners.

We, as FairTax advocates, believe that government should serve We, the People, with a fair tax system that will not enable politicians to pit poor against rich (creating barriers to achieve wealth, adding tax penalty to the sacrifices made for personal success). Nor do we want politicians to continue using business as a tool to hide taxes from consumers, often villifying business, which discourages entrepreneuship, personal achievement, economic growth. Liberty and happiness depends on restoring the fruits of labor to those who produce them. We believe that the tax function should align with economic growth, not against it, that government should be paid for in the same manner as working Americans - when, and because, something is sold!

Mike Huckabee is...
Pro-life
Pro-second ammendment
Pro-death penalty
Pro-military
Pro-defense spending
Pro-Israel
Pro-energy independence
Pro-fair trade
Anti-darwinism
Anti-gay marriage
Anti-euthanasia
Anti-outsourcing of jobs
Anti-fascism
Anti-communism
Anti-Islamic extremism

Plus, Mike is a man from a working class background, a man of his word, a man who believes the Bible, and not a politically motivated flip flopper like the Mormon multi-millionaire Romney.

My Christian vote goes to Mike Huckabee 100%!

Huckabee tells Iowans "fossils are the devil's handiwork":

http://www.atheistperspective.com/lewis-black-on-evolution/

Huckabee has my vote because he is real, and he is right. Romney looks like a maniquin, and speaks like he has been programmed, and continuously gets updated proramming with every political whim. The people will decide this one. The politicions and media will not decide this time, because we're paying attention for ourselves. BTW, is there any data on how many rapes result in pregnancy? And how many of them are aborted. I would be curious to know how the victims heal best from the evil event. By having an abortion to think about for ever as well as the crime, or by having something beautiful result from it thats with you forever.

Mike Huckabee is the most genuine guy running. He has my support. Willard Romney is now sucking the teat of anyone that he can buy. No thanks.

The best word to describe Romney is desperate. The only chance Romney has of becoming President is to run ads that play on voters ignorance. His platform so inconsistent, that the average politician would be laughed at for jumping all over the board. His money is the only thing keeping him in the race.

1) Romney WAS NOT tougher on Meth crimes than Huckabee, that is lie, which Romney wants you to believe.

2) There's a photo of Romney at a Planned Parenthood fundraiser, which he claimed he doesn't recall attending. When asked about the photo earlier this week, Romney refused to answer the question.

3)The man intentionally avoided talking about his Mormon Faith for months, then turned the tables when he began slipping in the polls. Once he decided to talk about it, he made himself out to be the victim as if he's been forced to talk about it.

4)Every speech now, he's attempting to fight back tears. These are fake tears. He claimed he pulled to the side of the road and cried when the Mormon Church decided to allow Blacks in the Church back in the 1970's. Sure we really believe that one Mitt.

5)The man will say or do anything to be President.
Where he stands on major issues is likely to change at any given time.

VOTE HUCKABEE 2008!

Finally a leader in the GOP with some conviction. Huck is the best GOP political maneverer since Theodore Rooesevelt. The South will not vote for Romney or Rudy, if either of those two get nominated it's pretty much a guaranteed victory for Hillary Clinton. To be honest, I'd rather see Hillary in office than Romney.

Mud keeps flying at Huckabee from all directions. The mud is distorted in a diffent direction everytime it is thrown. Huckabee's response is always solid and consistant. The man is honest. He has a vision for this country and the experience and itelligence to hold the office of president. Huckabee is an honorable man. Huckabee has my vote hands down.

---Mike Huckabee is for lower taxes and is a fervant supporter of the fair tax ( www.fairtax.org ). The fair tax is beneficial to all levels of income. It would help many people step up the income ladder and would be an adreneline shot to our economy.

---Huckabee is for growing our military and eliminating wasteful spending to offset the cost. PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.

---He is a true social conservative. His record on social issues falls on the side of life every time.

Huckabee is an honorable man and we need him as our president.

There are no accidents in advertising. First the well positioned bookshelf cross. Lit up to perfection. Now the Huckster attacks Romney and claims the mantle of David against Goliath. This guy is a snake oil saleman who is no better than any "establishment candidate."

He's a con man thumping you over the head with a bible. Iran was the first theocracy. Don't let this televangelist make America the second.

When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts!

Huckabee is by far the most articulate, and likeable of the Republicans- This is what the party NEEDS (especially after the Bush presidency)When the people see him firsthand they realize the "Rube" "evangelical" stereotypes are purely manufactured by those in the east coast pundit class seeking to manipulate the elections. My hope is that people go beyond the filters- I notice he has been getting less unfiltered media attention lately. Is this a top down decision my the upper level executive types to squelch his campaign? They were only interested in giving him airtime originally to make the horse race interesting...they have created a Frankenstein and are now scared to death of him. THIS IS CLASSIC...I love it when this stuff backfires on those running the mass media mind control scratch their heads and wonder why their plan did not work. They day the mass media mind manipulators win is the day the America dies. We will then become a nation Of the east coast establishment, FOR the east coast establismnet & BY the east coast establismnet...and not for regular americans.

Mike Huckabee has my complete support. This is the first chance we have had in a very long time to have a leader who is for "the people" of America.

Mike motivates me and I am excited to see the great things he will do for us and our country.
All of the negative attack ads won't change Mike's proven leadership record.

As everyone has seen, Mike Huckabee has surged to number one in the polls. When people hear him speak, they understand why he is the right choice to be President of the United States.

God bless Mike. If "we Americans" stick together, our country will move ahead stronger than ever with Mike leading it.

I endorse Mike Huckabee.
