Dover, N.H. – A week after excoriating Mitt Romney, The Concord Monitor endorsed Sen. John McCain today, praising him for his integrity, dignity and bipartisan style.

"McCain's willingness to break with his party on issues like climate change and immigration, his honesty and his refusal to pander make him the Monitor's choice in the Jan. 8 Republican presidential primary," the editorial said.

With the Monitor's endorsement, McCain has racked up 25 newspaper editorial boards choosing him as the best candidate in the GOP primary. At his first town hall meeting of the day, McCain was greeted by a standing room only crowd at the Greek Orthodox Church here. And using an overhead projector, the campaign displayed the names of the newspapers that are supporting the Arizona senator.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, has not received any endorsements in New Hampshire and his campaign has dismissed the Monitor for being a liberal newspaper. He didn't find support from his home state newspapers, either. Both The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald endorsed McCain.

Last week, The Concord Monitor called Romney "a phony," and said that with his constant change of position on the issues "you're left to wonder if there's anything at all at his core."

Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Romney, said it wasn't surprising that the Monitor endorsed McCain. "I think it says a lot that they cited John McCain's willingness to go against the Republican Party as a reason for their support," he said.

Polls show that McCain and Romney are locked in a race for first place in the state, with Romney launching a negative ad against McCain Friday. The ad accuses McCain of pushing for Social Security benefits for illegal immigrants and supporting amnesty, too.

FactCheck.Org, a non-partisan watchdog group, calls those charges "untrue," and says the ad is misleading in other ways, including the claim by Romney that he cut taxes in Massachusetts. The analysis said that while he enacted business tax credits, tax rates remained unchanged and he raised state revenues by increasing fees and closing corporate tax loopholes.

In Iowa, Romney told reporters that "we worked very hard to make sure [the commercial] was accurate and honest and looks at contrasting issues."

McCain responded with his own ad, using the Monitor's words to call Romney "a phony." McCain said this morning that he would not respond further to Romney's ad.

"We've said what we had to say," he said. "Move on."

It seems like all of these endorsements aren't really in support of Mccain at all. I think that these newspapers are just trying to take support away from Mitt Romney because they know that if Mitt Romney wins New Hamshire or Iowa that he is in a strong postion to get alot of swing votes down the stretch and ultimately the Republican Nomintation. He will kick Hillary's butt.

I would take Romney's brain any day over McCain's. The dude is a financial genius, and has turned around (in a good way) every thing he has ever touched. What has McCain done that was so great?

Hillary vs. Mitt. Wouldn't they both be saying what their pollster told them to say? Might as well hire one pollster and flip-flop cross country together. They are both mean, both dishonest, and both will say anything. There are no core values.

If Romney's such a genius, then why can't he stop himself from changing positions every few months?

Or is it that genius & honesty have nothing to do with each other?

I wrote about Romney's flip-flops here:

"McCain's willingness to break with his party on issues like climate change and immigration, his honesty and his refusal to pander make him the Monitor's choice in the Jan. 8 Republican presidential primary," the editorial said."

Translation.......Juan Mccain's willingness to act more like a Democrat than a Republican on certain issues means the moonbats dislike him least of all the GOP candidates.

Mccain can have the newspaper endorsements. Romney will just have to settle for the votes.

McCain is a man of integrity, which fact is underscored when Romney responds (in so many words), Guantanamo? We ought to double the capacity! In other words, Romney gives the impression that he would rather rubber-stamp the Bush administration, than to admit that a past policy must be corrected. Moreover, McCain's ability to work with Democrats rather than to march in lock-step with the GOP (as Romney advocates) reflects that he is a man of conviction, rather than one of political expedience.

Imagine that! The Democrat leaning press endorses one of their own? Conservatives look at this as 25-0 in favor of Romney. Go Mitt! Keep exposing McCain for who he is: Closet Democrat in the Republican Party.

McCain has voted down democrat party lines on so many crucial bills I think he is running in the wrong primary. His support of McCain/Feingold handed the democrats a clear advantage in fundraising and made it easier for Political Action Committees, like Moveon.org to make a living collecting money and influencing politics. It was not campaign reform it was truly bad judgment at its worst. Romney understands money and would have never taken the bait. John is an honorable man but is really not up to the task.

Well said, John! McCain doesn't even have a real shot nationally at this point. This is just an attempt to keep Mitt from winning both Iowa and New Hampshire.

I have met Mitt, and can vouch for his integrity.

We at ConservativeRepublicans.com are endorsing him.

Shouldn't it matter that Romney told two bold-face lies in his new ad -- one on McCain's immigration bill and one on his own tax policy? I would support Romney about as far as I could throw him. He's flip-flopped on a slew of social issues, has told tall tales on the campaign trail (he repeatedly lies about his father having marched with MLK in 1963) and in spite of spending more than everyone, has failed to inspire voters in Iowa. If his only strong point is that he was a successful corporate raider in the 1980s, then he should go run a hedge fund, not the White House.

I think people need to understand the difference between "comparison" campaigning and "negative" campaigning. There is nothing wrong with pointing out differences between two candidates records and statements - this is essential. And candidates should respond to such campaigning with their own clarifications and comparisons. Romney has every right, and should, point out that McCain supported campaign finance reform, Bush's immigration plan, and opposed tax cuts, and McCain has every right to, and should, point out Romney's flip-flops and inexperience in foreign affairs. However, resorting to using the epithet "phony" (even if only quoting an newspaper opinion) or any other ad hominem attack is "negative" campaigning, and is disgraceful.

Mc Cain represents everything that is wrong with politicans today. He is arrogant and represents his own interest not the people. Mitt Romney is the only guy in the field I would hire for my own business. Everyone else I would have reservations about so why not elect Romney for President.

Of course the liberal media is going to endorse the most liberal Republican, in this case John McCain. Its like asking Hillary Clinton which Republican she likes the most. These liberal media endorsements are worthless and are only helpful to tell conservatives which candidate not to support.

McCain if he had any dignity does not in my eyes any more. I can't believe how foolish he is being. Maybe his "hero" title has gone to his head. That is in the past, does he even talk about the future of this nation? I think he is being an embarrasement by the way he is going negative and the media that is supporting McCain have lost my respect too.

last i checked the goal of all senators and congressman should be the best future for america, not the best future for their party. maybe they should take that into account as theyre talking about how treacherous (sp?) mccain is for crossing party lines. if it were about how well you represent the party maybe we should have thrown jeb bush into the race. he is the only candidate with enough experience to handle foriegn policy issues such as oh say, the war. not to mention, he is something that most other politicians are not. a human. at least hes willing to say what he thinks and not say what his party wants him to.... like say romney who went on meet the press to defend bush against mike huckabee. way to go buddy. it is true, hes a financial genius. and if i owned a buisness, i might hire him to be a chairman. but for the future of the united states, i think ill stick with integrity, thanks.

My question what is the lie? Romney's father did march with Martin Luther King. You must have heard the lie and believed it.

What is was the lie in John McCain's immigration bill? What is the lie on Romney's tax policy? If you would, please explain yourself. How do I know you are not lying?

lot of ppl comenting here are paid worker of mitt romney.
wht a sucker romney is!!!

The establishment of the republican party needs a reality check. The evolution of the party is going more main street not Wall street, Romney is the face of the past, he has no core, I know a person can change his or her posistion ove the years but Romney has taken it to a new level. Remember his words. :I dont want to go back to Reagan/Bush!

Those were Mitt Romneys own words.

Great to see McCain pick up this much momentum. Romney looks desperate. I doubt he will be able to handle adversity as well as John did. Also, I'm very comfortable with his voting record as a senator (consistently conservative).

I find it funny how they attack Romney as being "a phony". If they wanted to come close to looking REPUTABLE they would use something MEASURABLE. Calling someone a phony is just a bitter opinion, like something found in high school dramas not political campaigns if you ask me. Mccain must really be hurting if he thinks siteing that is necessary.

The Underpinnings of Huckabee/McCain

Zionism is an international political movement that supports a homeland for the Jewish people in the land of Israel. Christian Zionism is a belief among some Christians that the return of the Jews to the Holy Land, establishing the Jewish State will hasten the second coming.
Israel's Ariel Sharon was quoted as saying "Don't worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it."
While Christian Zionists, popularizing an apocalyptic eschatology are backing Huckabee, Jewish Zionists are behind Mc Cain: Mark Broxmeyer, Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs; Sen. Lieberman, silent about his association with Zionist organizations; Max Boot, self-described neocon/ Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations; William Kristol, The Weekly Standard, whose Orthodox Jewish father, Irving Kristol, is considered the founder of the American neo-con movement
While shadow Zionists magically shore up Huckabee and McCain who have little financial support from "the people", the Christian Right disregards the authentic Christian messenger, Ron Paul.McCain/Huckabee, pitted against the "false" religions of the world, will never be accepted as peace makers on the international stage. Ron Paul’s position on non-intervention; non nation building; limited government; phasing out the Federal Reserve, IRS, entitlements threatens all Jewish and Christian Zionists, slackers and bankers. While Ron Paul throws the money changers out of the Temple the Christian Right washes their hands! And as for the Lieberman endorsement of McCain...he is the favorite son of AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee), the self -proclaimed America's Pro Israel lobbyists.

The flip flopper has been exposed.

Media endorsements and especially "anti-endorsements" are propaganda with a hidden agenda. Call it phony journalism. Notice the lack of disclosure statements identifying the authors' political party or real candidate of choice. Even the authors' names can be lacking.

When they say McCain is their GOP pick when in reality Clinton or Obama is their true pick?

McCain vowed to follow Osama to the "gates of hell." Never make your commander-in-chief a guy who vows to take your sons to the "gates of hell."

That vow it is a sign of radicalism. Translated it means he will chase down Osama at all costs even if that includes his own children or ours.

That kind of talk is not presidential. Sorry.

Romney relies on paid image consultants to put him right in the middle of Republican belief. That puts him in favor of the status-quo, and Republicans are sick of the status quo. They know their party is abandoning its principles.

We need someone who has a record of standing strong for principle (John McCain, Ron Paul, or Fred Thompson) not Romney.

McCain is too liberal for me. Mitt had to act liberal to get elected in Kennedy, Kerry and Barney's state. His core values have come out in his run for President. Mitt will make us proud to be Americans and proud he is our President.

Liberals (most newspapers and media) want Huckabee in Iowa and McCain in NH out of fear of Romney, who they know will be a far stronger challenger to the Dems in the general election. Hillary will run over Huckabee and McCain.

Sharon

Wendy-there is no concrete evidence that Mitt's dad ever marched with MLK. You are the one misinformed. And the new ad against McCain is full of lies and half-truths. The immigration bill was not an "amnesty" bill; that's a word that was created for it so low-attention span people had a word they could latch onto. McCain never advocated giving social security benefits to illegals, that's a flat-out lie. And isn't funny that Mitt is criticizing McCain for an immigration bill that he originally supported. Just another one of Mitt's flip-flops; how can anyone trust this guy?

Let me get this straight.....

The Concord Monitor calls Mitt a phoney and then turns around and endorses Hillary on the Dem side?

Are you kidding me?

Mccain may truly be a war hero but the guy isn't fit to be the GOP pres nominee. I find his amnesty support and desire to apply the geneva convention to terrorists in the hopes that they will repay the favor if they ever capture American soldiers downright bizzarre.

Mitt Romney is by far the most competent and capable among both parties.

There is more intelligence, resourcefulness and ability in one of Mitt Romney's bowel movements than there is in the combined beings of all the other candidates running on both sides.

The guy's resume glows in the dark for pete's sake.

I will be voting for Romney in the NH primary and I suggest anyone that cares about America do the same.

MCCAIN/Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Where is Senator when someone in his state
dies at the airport in the hands of local police?
Where does he stand regarding his sheriff's torture of our
American sons?

David Wright-You say Romney had to act liberal to get elected in Mass.? So what looks like pandering now, isn't? He was pandering then? I kind of feel sorry for him now, all those years of acting like a liberal, just to get elected and stay in office. Imagine, turning your back on your core values for a dozen years. The poor guy probably couldn't sleep at night.

This is the 5th political article on the presidential candidates I have read today. It is very hard having to sift through so much nastiness to get to the issues and where the candidates stand on them. I'm undecided between McCain and Romney. (I like Hucakabee but not sure he as the experience we need.) I really don't care who endorses them in NH or IA since I think for myself. I don't decide who has integrity or who is phony from a newspaper article. Since they both have great capabilities and experiences, though in different ways, I am looking for the candidate who is best for this country at this time. No one candidate is perfect or has never made a mistake. I like McCain's willingness to bring parties together and I like Romney's ability to organize, make hard and wise decisions and to own up to his changing his mind. Imagine a President who would never change his mind! Why have a cabinet, or even congress then. McCain has a lot of experience in foreign affairs and there are some things I like about his immigration policy. I think when it comes to the war in Iraq, health care, and the economy each of their positions will be hard to work through with this congress. Just give me the facts (which by the way I check out on my own) and let me make my own decisions.

Your comment says who you want as a cannadite. McCain call names and you call names.

McCain has McCain-Feingold, helping Sen. Kennedy try to get amnesty for illegal immigrants, Gang of 14, Keating 5, questionable mental stability, and on and on. No real conservative should ever consider voting for McCain!

Wow I am impressed. The liberal newspapers want Clinton and McCain. That makes sense. Liberal vs. Liberal. Spending has gone rampant in Congress. Guess who is to blame. A vote for McCain is a vote for higher taxes. If you think you need to pay more taxes the IRS will gladly accept donations to reduce the deficit. But please don't force higher taxes on the rest of us Middle class by voting for either of these Liberals. Romney is the only one who has a clue when it comes to finances.

You suck, Suckman and so does McCain. McCain should run on a Liberal platform and as a Democrat as well, since the papers that have endorsed him all have liberal agendas. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Mitt!
