MoveOn.org took a break from criticizing President Bush and his Republican allies this week to raise money for U.S. troops overseas – and netted more than $300,000 in 24 hours, the liberal group says.

The money will benefit the USO’s Operation Phone Home program, which gives phone cards free to service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"MoveOn members are committed to seeing our troops come home as quickly as possible and we'll keep working to make that happen,” the group said in the appeal it sent on Thursday to 3.3 million people on its e-mail list. “But right now, supporting the USO is a simple way to make a genuine difference in the lives of brave men and women who've sacrificed a lot for our country.”

MoveOn.org, still taking heavy fire for its “General Betray Us?” advertisement, asked each recipients to pony up $15 – the cost of a phone card that lasts about 45 minutes.

"So often we focus on legislation, but around the holidays we also just wanted to directly reach out to the men and women in harm's way and help out," Eli Pariser, executive director of the group’s Civic Action program, told the Associated Press.

A spokesman for the United Services Organizations told the AP that the group worked with e-mail to craft the e-mail “to ensure that it was very clear that the USO was nonpartisan."

"Any time you're dealing with an organization that's political in nature, you're always concerned that somebody would be affected who doesn't share those political views," spokesman Mark Phillips said. "It's important to note that our full purpose is to support the active duty troops and their families."

MoveOn.org grew in popularity as a target for conservatives with its “General Betray Us?” advertisement, which appeared in The New York Times as Gen. David Petraeus prepared to testify before Congress on the results of the surge in Iraq.

I hope the moveon.org thugs are sincere here. For once, this unAmerican, full of liars organization has done something that isn't evil. Maybe the Christmas spirit got to these progressive secular believers.

But there little amount still pales by the tens of millions that conservatives donate to the troops and their families. Course, the Swamp bozos would never write about that.

WHAT HAS FAUX COMEDY CHANNEL DONE BESIDES MAKE MONEY FOR THEIR WEALTHY COMICS?

That is a nice gesture...a nicer gift would be the return home of all our troops.

John D states That 'it still pales by the tens of million that conservatives donate to the troops and their families." Where is your proof of this John D.?

How much money has Fox News raised for the troops? I'm really asking.

I can't believe this organization is capable of doing anything this generous for our soldiers. Over the last few years they have spouted opinions such as they support the troops when they shoot their officers, they come to the defense of those seeking to run to Canada to avoid service and have been openly supportive of anyone who would criticize our military and have been a major force behind many of the false or at least egregious stories concerning members of the Armed Forces.
Bravo if the phone cards ever appear but I think this money will go into their coffers to further their smear campaign against the troops. I wonder how many people didn't fully check out this group before donating?

John D, You say that the amount that Move.On has raised "pales by the tens of millions that conservatives donate to the troops and their families." Please provide evidence of these donations.

John D.

Since you have a list of conservative groups that have given the troops tens of millions of dollars, would you mind sharing that list with the rest of us?

I'll settle for just (one) ten million dollar list.

And please don't use something like the USO and say it's conservative. Moveon.org is a definite liberal group.

So how much has townhall.com, or redstates.com, or others given to the troops?

The Move On types don't fool me for one second.

This is a capitulation. They have been beaten and thank God.

I am a troop and if I get a card from Move On, I will burn it.

John D. has learned well from his breathren when it comes to phoney numbers and lies.

PAUL,O'REALLY IS LEADING THE CHARGE.HE WAS A VIETNAM HERO.

The Vietnam War simply never happened.

So let's get to the point. The striking fact of O'Reilly's past is that the Vietnam War simply never happened. In "Bill O'Reilly's Nothing But Spin Zone," the great eraser works tirelessly and he comes from a world where there is no Vietnam and no draft which is rather strange for someone who grew up in the era. Vietnam, the overwhelming event of O'Reilly's high school and college years is never mentioned in his books nor on his television show. Even in his attacks on Clinton there no mention of "Slick Willie Clinton the Draft Dodger." And the why of it is pretty simple. Bill O'Reilly at least matched Bill Clinton's Vietnam War record.

O'Reilly graduated from Chaminade High School in Long Island in 1967, a year in which 10,000 Americans, some younger then O'Reilly, died in Vietnam. And in these years, 1967-1968, O'Reilly would have to register for the draft and then make a decision. While America's lower economic classes were being drafted or enlisting there was a ways out for many of the despised liberal elite. It was called the college deferment followed by graduate school.

And Vietnam was not something that you just overlooked or forgot about. In 1967-68, American airwaves and newspapers were filled with stories of battles called Operation Cedar Falls and Junction City, of places named KheSan, Locninh, DakTo, as well as the Tet Offensive and the MyLai massacre. And there were massive demonstrations and marches in cities and on campuses including the famous Kent State photograph.

Yet O'Reilly, at his age and single, was high priority draftee material yet never enlisted or was drafted and his record of the Vietnam era remains blank. Today's - but not yesterday's - super patriot, entered Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in the fall of 1967. He was active as a columnist for the student newspaper The Circle as well as a member of the football team which meant he suffered no great physical handicap which would exempt him from military service.

In the bloodiest days of the Vietnam war we find Bill O'Reilly a student at an all boys school in England.Mitt Romney was hiding in France learning how to make Crepes.

So John D. where is the list of the conservatives and conservative groups that have donated "tens of millions to the troops and their families?"

I've yet to see Rush "phony soldiers" Limpbaugh or Sean "I support the troops but I'm to afraid to actually fight in a war myself" Hannity. do anything like this for our troops.

They're to busy passing out those yellow "we support the troops" bumper magnets to all of the other Wingnut chickenhawks like themselves to proudly display on their gas guzzling SUV's.

I am a troop and if I get a card from Move On, I will burn it.

No you're not, you're a rightwing luntic troll, otherwise you'd be thankful to anyone who was kind enough to donate $$$ to the troops.

Hey John D., we're still waiting for that list of all the conservatives who have donated the "tens of millions to the troops and their families." Oh, John D. John D. are you there? Hello, hello? Has any one seen John D.

I wonder how much George Soros donated.

Move-on has over 3 million members (supposedly) and all they can raise is $300K? A dime per member - now that's support.

MAth Whiz,

I believe there were six of these around the country this year.

I believe the "phony soliders letter was auctioned for over $2 million, wchich Rush matched.

Did you contribute your milk money?

As is always the case, juanniieed proves that no good deed goes unpunished. He can't just say thanks for supporting the troops. Oh no. That would be defeatican. He has to say his donor list is bigger than theirs. Sounds like serious size envy to me. But that's what one expects from wide-stanced male-page-seducing chickenhawk selfish fearmongering racist heartless gay-hooker-patronizing hypocrites.

Great job Move On!

But now, lets get a little serious here for a minute.

Here is a special message for a troubled 'friend of the Swamp'. A regular contributor, he cries out for help in every posting he submits. Here it is John D, my friend; This one is for you, buddy!

'Oh , Man! Look here. Look, look, down here!' exclaimed the Ghost. They were a boy and a girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish; but prostrate, too, in their humanity. Where graceful youth should have filled their features out, and touched them with its freshest tints, a stale shriveled hand had pinched and twisted them and pulled them to shreds.

'Spirit, are they yours?' John D could say no more.

'They are Man's' said the Spirit.

'This boy is ignorance. This girl is want. Beware them both, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is DOOOM!, unless the writing is erased. Deny it!'
(C. Dickens)

PS;
Jimmy Venom,
You seem to be bitter and full of spite.
Would Jesus approve of that during this season of Christmas, His very birthday?

A little song for John D, and the newest arrival, Jimmy 'Venom';

Ever stop to wonder
Should I question
Move a stone look under
Should I judge ?

How you have changed my friend
You're not the same man my friend
Do you lose sleep at night
Do you ever stop to think where it
Went wrong for you
Who turned ya reds to blue

Who put those tiny daggers
In your heart

They say you're walking dead
They say you lost some friends
But when they turn that spinnin' gatt
I bet you spin and burn
And cry just like the rest
And cry just like the best

Who put those tiny daggers
In your heart

No need for desperation
No need for sweet revenge
Please try to remember
The door is always there
Don't you walk on by
The door is always there
All you want to do is kick it in
And try to walk out of the flames

Who put those tiny daggers
In your heart?

Who put those tiny daggers
In your heart?

I don't know what it is about the self-righteous, but I remember a few years ago a group of great gals that worked at a bar collected a load of cash for the Catholic Children's Gift Fund, or something like that, in the Chicago area.

The gift was turned down because the money was considered 'dirty' by the Catholic hierarchy. (!?)

This is absurd...I thought this was a political/cultural debate? Where are the postings?

OK, let me start with the basics; we are operating in the 'virtual' world, ruled by electrons that 'move' at near the speed of light.

Yet entries languish, and die.

Who cares about a list of conservative donors. It means nothing.

Conservatives argue soldiers are in Iraq fighting for out freedom.

Biggest bunch of bull yet.

How many US soldiers were killed for WMDs that Bush lied about its existance in Iraq, those known unknowns that are known knowns? Where is Al Qaida & Osama, the ones responsible for 9/11 or did conservatives conveniently forget about them? What about all the profits from selling Iraqi oil to pay for the cost of the war?

Go ahead & defend your right to drive 9mpg suvs. Your billions of extra money wasted at the pump winds-up in the hands of those radical Islamo-fascists you claim Bush is defending the country agianst.

There's your real donation to America.

Terry, (The pointy haired 'boss' of the Swamp)

If there were a garbage man, and George Soros in a bar, the average income of the patrons would be what? $100MgB per year?

In statistics, averages can lie. You have to throw out the highest and lowest as anomalies.

Your 'bean counter' personality is so, so,,sad...

Where the list of great "Conservatives" that went to Vietnam?

What does Conservative mean?

Leave to one the leading Republican cheerleaders (Seany Hannity) to rip off people under the guise of raising money for the troops.

"Freedom Alliance, The Favorite Charity of Sean Hannity and Oliver North, Receives an "F" From Leading Watchdog Group"

Remember those much touted Freedom Concerts that Sean Hannity and Oliver North bragged raise money for our veterans? Well, it turns out those two "Great Americans" may have some 'splaining to do. Freedom Alliance, the charity founded by North and the beneficiary of the concerts, just got an "F" rating from the leading watchdog group, American Institute of Philanthropy. In an article in today's Washington Post, Freedom Alliance was cited for its meager spending on veterans relative to the monies received.

Americans gave millions of dollars in the past year to veterans charities designed to help troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, but several of the groups spent relatively little money on the wounded, according to a leading watchdog organization and federal tax filings.
Eight veterans charities, including some of the nation’s largest, gave less than a third of the money raised to the causes they champion, far below the recommended standard, the American Institute of Philanthropy said in a report. One group passed along 1 cent for every dollar raised, the report says. Another paid its founder and his wife a combined $540,000 in compensation and benefits last year, a Washington Post analysis of tax filings showed.

There are no laws regulating the amount of money charities spend on overhead, fundraising or giving. But the institute’s report suggests that 20 of the 29 military charities studied were managing their resources poorly, paying high overhead costs and direct-mail fundraising fees, and, in some cases, providing their leaders with six-figure salaries.

The 12 charities rated as failing by the institute – including the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, the AMVETS National Service Foundation and the Freedom Alliance – collected at least $266 million in the past fiscal year.

“They know how to work the system, and they seem pretty good at not going over the line, although it is pretty outrageous that so little money is actually winding up benefiting charities,” said Daniel Borochoff, president and founder of the Chicago-based institute.

Can't figure out why MoveOn received such grief for their "Betray Us" ad (though the publicity sure gave them the biggest bang for their buck). When you read and hear the blather and lies from O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Hannity, what's so wrong about a little dose of the truth?

24 hours later, and geographically Challenged Dumb Dumb Little Johnnie Dyslin, "the Joseph Stalin of Streamwood", has yet to back up his allegations and produce proof of "the tens of millions that conservatives donate to the troops and their families".

Why aren't we surprised?

Oh Loons, you make this way too easy. Here is just ONE donation by Limbaugh to the

Marine Corp Law Enforcement Foundation, which helps the children of those in the military. This one swoop by Limbaugh netted that charity MORE THAN $4 MILLION. This is just ONE!!!

http://www.charlotteconservative.com/index.php/2007/10/rush-raises-4m-for-marines/

And if that isn't good enough, perhaps this from the NY Times is:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/20/washington/20letter.html?ex=1350532800&en=1a429a94c84f548b&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Since the creation of this charity, Limabaugh has donated more than $10 million of his own money.

Still excited folks by your $300,000?
